The suspect, Ekelemo Kuete said he was given N50,000 for his involvement in the deadly operation.

According to the indigene of Ondo state, " We were 15 in number that went for that operation and we used two speed boats. "I am the speed boat driver that took the armed robbery gang to Lekki on Mach 12, 2015". I didn't want to go, they forced me, and after the operation, they gave me N50,000. I have not gone for robbery operation before now; I am into oil bunkering in Arepo along Lagos Ibadan expressway, a community in Ogun state. Nairaland GeneralNigeria: Fuel Scarcity - Exploitation Reigns Supreme At Lagos Filling Stations by gatb(op): 12:03pm On May 11, 2015
IN spite of the reported arrival of eight vessels loaded with various types of petroleum products at Lagos ports last Sunday, Lagosians still groan under the agony of scarcity of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS).

IN spite of the reported arrival of eight vessels loaded with various types of petroleum products at Lagos ports last Sunday, Lagosians still groan under the agony of scarcity of Petroleum Motor Spirit (PMS).

The two-week-old scarcity has continued to linger and the end result is the exploitation by many independent marketers and even NNPC stations. Many Nigerians, especially Lagosians now bear the brunt of the scarcity as they buy PMS at an exorbitant price different from the official pump price of N87.

At many filling stations in Ikotun, Igando, Idimu, Egbeda, Akowonjo, Dopemu, Agege Motor road, Ikeja along, and Airport road in Lagos State, many private car owners and commercial buses were seen queuing up to buy even when the price was almost double of the official pump price. The queue-up in many filling stations has however been causing serious gridlocks in many areas.

For instance, at Cement, the queues often extended into the middle of Agege motor road, causing serious traffic for road users. Further investigation done by The Guardian also revealed that both independent marketers and black marketers are taking advantage of this scarcity. They all sell at an amount almost double the official N87.

At some filling stations in Igando, Ijegun and Ikotun, PMS is being sold at N100, N120, N150 per litre. At various filling stations, even at the so-called NNPC stations, fuel was being sold majorly to people with kegs with a view to maximizing profits.

The NNPC stations in Ikotun, Diamond Estate areas and Isheri-Igando road are culpable in this act. When asked why independent marketers had to sell at exorbitant price, excuses given by many respondents were that they also bought the PMS at an expensive rate.

At one of the NNPC stations in Alimosho, the manager, names withheld, explained that they don't lift fuel at the official amount and this has forced him to also find a way of making up for the loss. Incidentally, black marketers buy PMS directly from the NNPC and sell at almost adjacent the filling station.

The Guardian also found out that black marketers, whom sell PMS to people as if they are selling kerosene, have bought different measures. At Ejigbo, many marketers were spotted at different locations with different measures selling to commuters.

Independent marketers along Ikotun, Ijegun, Isheri and even NNPC area of Ejigbo area of Lagos sell petrol at N100 and N120 for the past two weeks. In fact, most NNPC stations prefer to sell to black marketers who stay few kilometers to them and sell at expensive rates.
Nairaland General12 Soldiers Sentenced To Death Cry Out ‘they Want To Kill Us With Starvation by gatb(op): 10:21am On May 11, 2015
The gallant troops of the Nigerian Army that were arrested last year on charges of mutiny and attempted murder have reportedly disclosed to media through text messages the harsh conditions under which they are being held.

Here is an excerpt of the text message sent to reporters.

“Greetings sir, we are the 12 soldiers sentenced to death \others detained at CIC Apapa, Lagos. We are to inform you that following our denial of access to our families, councils & even access to fund [sic] to feed our families\pay our legal fees, that as you know, we had been concealing our cell phone to help us hear from counsels.

“The phone was collected on 6\5\15, in view of this, we have not been fed, We are on hand-cuff & leg chain, we are kept naked [sic] & deprived of even drinking water. As it stands now sir, our lives are at stake. We, therefore, plead with due respect that you intervene”.

http:///1dWKlwO
It was learnt that an attempt to contact the soldiers through the phone number proved abortive. However, after a while, one of the accused sent a voice call with a frantic message.

“They are trying to kill us. They want to kill us,” the voice said.

The voice furthermore revealed that the authorities have noticed that they have access to a cell phone and have therefore punished them by starvation. He said they had not been fed nor given any water for about five days.

“Is not OK, they want to kill us with bitting [sic] starvation since 4 days we have not eating [sic] any food pls help us we are the 12 soldiers they sentenced last year,” another text message said.

PoliticsAfter Surviving Boko Haram, Returnees Face Hunger In Nigerian Towns by gatb(op): 10:08am On May 11, 2015
Since Nigeria’s army began clearing large areas of the country’s northeast from Boko Haram, some of the 1.5 million internally displaced people have started returning home. But thousands could now face severe food shortages as reconstruction lags behind.

Along the main roads heading north from Adamawa’s state capital Yola, some trade has resumed in the towns but ghostly pockets and haunting reminders of the insurgent takeover are evident. Some three months after the fighting ended, the smell of rotting corpses still clings to the air by the headquarters of the Church of the Brethren near Mararaba.

Islamist militant group Boko Haram grabbed swathes of Nigeria’s northeast last year, killing thousands in an unprecedented land grab. It took over most of Borno state, the birthplace of the group, and parts of Adamawa and Yobe while increasing incursions on neighbouring countries.

The army began pushing back when Boko Haram was about 100 km (60 miles) from Adamawa’s state capital. In the last few months, many people have returned to Adamawa but health clinics, banks and schools are still lacking, especially in the northernmost areas, and vast stretches of farmland between towns stand barren.

In the town of Michika, which saw some of the fiercest fighting, residents are too afraid and lack the equipment and manpower to farm, and at least for the moment they will not be able to live off the land.

Meanwhile there is no sign of government aid.

“Most people coming back are in hardship because there’s no food. People are sick but there are no hospitals ... no vegetables, no lemons, no bananas ... We’re not ready to go back to farming. All our machinery was burned or taken,” a Christian community leader, Sini T-Kwagga, told Reuters.

People will drive to Mubi, a city about an hour’s drive south, to get goods but this vital route will be blocked once the rainy season comes into full swing next month.

Many bridges were blown up by Boko Haram, including the important link to Mubi, to try to stop the offensive by Nigerian troops. The river is already starting to fill up with early rains and men have to push cars through the muddy waters while women sell mangoes to passers-by.

Madagali, the northernmost major town in the state and the last to be liberated in Adamawa in February, also depends on this route.

Mubi itself was a Boko Haram stronghold at one point. Life is bustling again but its banks are still closed and in ruin.

LANDMINE DANGER

Rusting tanks with Arabic writing, burnt cars and military equipment litter the main roads in northern Adamawa. Boko Haram writings cover the beige outdoor walls of buildings, roofs are collapsed and gutted churches stand charred.

Some landmines are still dotted around Michika and the main farming areas are far away from military checkpoints.

“We have to stay, we have nowhere to live, no money for rent. We are afraid to farm ... about a week ago a bomb exploded when people went to clear the land. They were hurt,” Rebecca Ishaya said.

She came back two weeks ago with her children but sent a few away again because of the lack of schools.

Boko Haram militants liberally employed landmines, often handmade in their bomb factories, to protect their strongholds. The military said this strategy was slowing their offensive into the Sambisa forest reserve, which is the militants’ last bastion and where hundreds of abducted women and children have been found.

SportsBenni Mccarthy Opens Up About His 'drug Lord' Friend by gatb(op): 12:23pm On May 08, 2015
Bafana Bafana all time leading goalscorer Benni McCarthy, who was this week robbed at gunpoint in Johannesburg, has revealed that one of his best friends’ has turned into a gangster.

"It's true. He was my mate and in my class at school. He was bullied as a kid because he was small, quiet and a good-looking boy. I was the school's soccer star and he hung out with me a bit to be on the safe side,” recalled the former Porto star in an exclusive interview with Four Four Two magazine.

"At grade six he grew quickly and he wasn't small anymore. He started hanging out with the wrong crowd and became an infamous drug lord.”

In a recent trip to visit his friend Gavin, McCarthy said: “I went to see Gavin on my next trip to Cape Town. I was earning massive money but I couldn't afford the house that Gavin lived in,” added McCarthy.

"It was like something out of a movie: a mansion with Rottweilers and bodyguards holding guns.”

CrimeShocking: Woman Kills Her 5 Year Old Son With Salt To Drive Traffic To Her Blog by gatb(op): 12:45pm On Apr 27, 2015
A mother who poisoned her five-year-old son to drive traffic to her blog has been jailed for 20 years on Wednesday for killing him. Spears who wrote a blog about motherhood was sentenced for murdering her five-year-old son through salt poisoning so she could use his illness to gain social media attention. Judge Robert Neary said while Lacey Spears suffered from the mental illness known as Munchausen by proxy, she was guilty of a crime “unfathomable in its cruelty.” Spears, from Scottsville, Kentucky, was convicted of second degree murder last month in the death of her son Garnett-Paul Spears. During the trial the court heard how the woman had given her son lethal doses of salt through a feeding tube because she craved the attention it gave her.

CrimeFamily Faults Police For Releasing Daughter’s Suspected Killers by gatb(op): 11:39am On Apr 27, 2015
Relatives of Cecilia Yourouf, a 33-year-old woman, who was found dead in a farm at Ajise in the Ipokia Local Government Area of Ogun State are at loggerheads with the Ogun State Police Command over the release of three suspects arrested in connection with the death of their beloved.

It was gathered that Cecilia had gone to the farm on March 14, 2015, to harvest vegetables, but did not return home.

It was learnt that her mutilated remains were later found on the farm, with her private parts and one of her breasts cut off, while the rest of the body was covered with leaves.

PUNCH Metro learnt that on discovery of the body, the family reported at the Owode Police Station and policemen came to the scene to take pictures before the body was deposited at a morgue in Ilaro. The deceased was buried two days later.

Our correspondent was told that the police subsequently mounted surveillance on the farmland, leading to the arrest of the suspects, who were said to be nationals of the Niger Republic. It was learnt that the nomads had been hostile to dwellers of the community for a long time.

An uncle of the deceased, Ashidi Yourouf, faulted the release of the suspects and urged the police to do justice on the case. He described the mother of three as hard-working and generous, despite being physically-challenged.

He said, “I don’t think suspects in a case like this should be released. Police must have compromised. We don’t have money to fight our case, but we want justice. Cecilia must not die in such a cruel manner and her killers would be allowed to go scot-free.

“With her hand and leg partially paralysed, she still struggled to fend for her children, her mother and herself. She did not deserve to die this way.”

The deceased’s brother, Philip Yourouf, said his 84-year-old mother had been in sorrow since the death of her sister. He also urged the police to check the excesses of the herdsmen.

He said, “Cecilia’s death is a great loss to the family. Our mother is sad. I have been trying to comfort her, but it has been difficult.

“Those herdsmen are foreigners, yet they oppress the indigenes. We go to farms with fears. They lay in ambush for us. We want police to stop them us or chase them away from our land.”

Another uncle of the deceased, Babatunde, urged that the culprits be brought to book in due course, adding that the family had reported the matter at the state police command headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta.

Cecilia’s eldest child, 12-year-old Florence, a primary four pupil, said life had been tough for the family since the demise of their mother.

She said, “It was my mother that had been taking care of us since our father left us. Mummy was planning to pay my second term school fees when she died. I have not paid up till now.”

The deceased’s mother, Agnes, said her health had suffered a setback since her daughter died.

“She was the one who stayed with me all the time. She bought my drugs from what she realised from her trade. My health has been getting worse since Sisilia died.”

The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, confirmed the incident. He, however, denied the deceased’s family’s allegation that police had compromised their investigation.

Adejobi said the suspects were released on bail as there was no solid evidence linking them with the murder and promised that the command would intensify efforts in bringing the culprits to book.

He said, “The woman was declared missing on March 14 and her corpse was found on the farmland two days after.

“I think she was strangled. The police went there and arrested three suspects, who were almost 500 metres away from where the woman was killed.

“There was no empirical fact that those arrested killed her and we have released them on bail. We cannot keep them in detention so that we don’t violate their fundamental human rights.

“Investigation is still on and we are focused. If the suspects have any link with the murder, we will re-arrest them. We are going to spread our tentacles to arrest the culprits.

“The family should not indict the police. We have done the right thing. If the need warrants that we exhume the corpse for proper investigation, we will do that.”

Nairaland GeneralSHOCKING Details On Missing $20 Billion: Buhari To Diezani , No HIDING.......... by gatb(op): 1:05pm On Apr 24, 2015
FOR public officials and their cronies stealing the country blind through the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, the day of reckoning beckons. The thumping victory of Muhammadu Buhari in the March 28 presidential election was followed last week by the World Bank’s backing for his resolve to closely scrutinise the corporation. With persistence, the reign of impunity and unbridled looting will, hopefully, soon be over at the state-owned oil company. The incoming government must ensure that everyone involved in corrupt practice in the corporation is detected, investigated, prosecuted and punished.

Having coasted to victory on the promise to halt the pervasive corruption that defines the current administration and on his own reputation for accountability, Buhari has no choice but to, first, undertake a detailed probe and audit of the NNPC operations and account and, thereafter, break the corrupt monolith into a lean holding company. The executives, petroleum ministry and Presidency officials that have for so long gorged on the treasury through the NNPC should not get away with their loot. The World Bank’s backing should also put paid to some misguided calls that the in-coming administration should not “waste” time on probes. We disagree.

The magnitude of NNPC’s malfeasance demands one. Corruption is encouraged by both the incentives and opportunities to be corrupt. And so, the World Bank’s Chief Economist for Africa, Francisco Ferreira, said, “One norm that has to change is the norm of impunity.” A series of audits and reports has uncovered horrendous graft, unauthorised spending, alleged secret accounts and brazen theft. Described by The Economist of London as one of the world’s “most opaque” national oil companies, the NNPC unilaterally determines how much subsidy and other items it is entitled to and simply deducts. Global audit firm, KPMG, reported that between 2007 and 2009, for instance, it over-billed the government by N28.5 billion in subsidy deductions. In 2013, Switzerland-based non-governmental organisation, Erklarung von Bern, alleged that $6.8 billion was siphoned in crude revenues. The Finance Ministry complained in September 2007 that the corporation failed to remit $5.2 billion to the government.

For a company responsible for the country’s interest in the oil and gas sector that provides over 70 per cent of government revenues and 90 per cent of export earnings, this corporation must be made accountable. The NNPC has become a law unto itself and, as noted by Democracy Network, an NGO, “it is accountable to no one.” The veracity of this was confirmed by Petroleum Resources Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, who pointedly told a parliamentary committee that the NNPC had the right under law to spend part of its revenue without recourse to the parliament despite the constitutional provision that all revenues accruing to ministries, departments and agencies of the government must be remitted to the Federation Account.

An organisation rated by the Economist Intelligence Unit in 2007 to be “a source of corruption and national shame” and in March this year, to be “among the most secretive oil groups in the world,” can only continue to be so only with presidential and ministerial complicity. Successive Nigerian presidents have, according to an analyst, turned the NNPC into their “personal ATM.” A former presidential media adviser, in his memoirs, detailed how the then President would simply demand money from the NNPC group managing director for activities that should normally be funded by MDAs. There are allegations that the NNPC partly funds the re-election campaigns of sitting presidents.

The scale of the impunity perpetrated by public officials is simply awesome. What Nigeria needs is a holding company to manage her interests in the oil and gas industry, not a corporate behemoth that oils the machinery of graft. The reform should begin with a total withdrawal from the downstream oil sector – pipelines, refineries, depots and retail outlets should be privatised within six months of the new administration taking office. Its production arm, the NPDC, should also be privatised. Let the private sector run things, while the government strengthens regulation and sees to the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill.
As the late Singaporean leader, Lee Kuan Yew, put it,“Singapore is what it is today because of its system of transparency and integrity.” The new government should break quickly with the inertia, impunity and complicity of the President Goodluck Jonathan administration and exhume the panel and audit reports on the NNPC. Arising from the 2011 petrol subsidy scam where N2.53 trillion was paid in unbudgeted payments, four reports and committee reports to review them have not been acted upon. The latest report by the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative on the period 2009-11, said N4.42 billion, N3.71 billion, and $1.7 billion in over-recoveries from marketers and use of expired memorandum of understanding with joint venture partners were still outstanding. This is a firm that, according to EvB, sells all of its crude through third parties, which creates room for kickbacks and shady contracts.

PoliticsHow Court Terminated Suits Challenging Buhari's Eligibility by gatb(op): 10:34am On Apr 23, 2015
The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, yesterday, terminated further hearing on two separate suits that challenged the qualification of General Muhammadu Buhari, rtd, to participate in the 2015 presidential election.

Justice‎ Ademola Adeniyi struck out the suits following notices of discontinuance that was entered before the court by the plaintiffs.

The plaintiffs, Chukwunweike Okafor, and Mr. Max Ozoaka‎, through their respective lawyers, Chief Mike Ozehkome, SAN, and Dr. Chike Amobi, told the court that they decided to withdraw the matter in order to allow the President-elect, Buhari, to effectively run the affairs of the nation without ‎distractions.

"My Lord we have a notice of discontinuance and we have served all the parties. I called the plaintiff and advised that he should discontinue the suit to avoid distraction for the incoming government.

"Since Jonathan has conceded defeat and also encouraged his supporters to do the same, after such heroic act, we saw no reason to weep more than the bereaved", Ozekhome added.

Respond‎ing to the development, Buhari, through his lawyer Chief Akin Olujumi, SAN, said he would not oppose the application to withdraw the suits against him, even as he commended both the plaintiffs and their lawyers for "doing the wise thing".

Buhari told the court that he would not press for cost to be awarded against the plaintiffs for initiating the legal actions against him.

‎Similarly, the All Progressives Congress, APC, which was also cited as a defendant in the suits, lauded the plaintiffs for their decision to discontinue, contending that going ahead with the subject matter of the case would have amounted to a waste of time.

‎On its part, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, through its lawyer, Mr. Hassan Liman, equally did not object to the withdrawal applications dated April 22.

While striking out the suits, Justice Adeniyi commended all the parties for "exhibiting high sense of commitment".

Justice Adeniyi had earlier stressed that its decision ‎on the very first suit against Buhari, which was filed by Mr. Okafor, would impact on about eight other eligibility suits ‎pending before the court.

However, the ruling of the court yesterday will not affect ‎another suit that was lodged against Buhari by Chief Ayakeme Whiskey (FHC/ABJ/CS/68/15), who had maintained that the subject matter of his own action transcended the issue of eligibility.

‎Meantime, no date has been fixed for hearing of that suit.

The plaintiffs had in the suits that were withdrawn yesterday, prayed the court ‎for a declaration that the 1st defendant, Buhari, was not eligible to participate in the 2015 presidential election for failure to comply with the terms for submission of list of candidate and affidavit of personal particulars of persons seeking election to the office of President.

They sought similar reliefs, including, "A declaration that by the combined provisions of sections 31(1) (2) and (3) of the 2010 Electoral Act (as amended) and INEC Form CF 001, the 1st defendant is mandatorily obliged by law to comply strictly with the provisions laid down under the Electoral Act (as amended) and INEC Form CF 001 as it relates to attaching evidence of the 1st defendant's birth certificate and evidence of his educational qualifications as required under INEC Form C.F 001.

"A declaration that the Curriculum Vitae and Voters Registration card attached by the 1st defendant in his INEC ‎Form C.F 001 and submitted to the 2nd defendant, INEC, as a Presidential Candidate in 2015 general election is not in conformity with the form prescribed by the Electoral Act/INEC Form C.F. 001 and is manifestly in contravention of the said Act/INEC Form C.F. 001 and therefore null and void".

Specifically Mr. Ozoaka, sought for an order of court declaring as invalid the INEC Form C.F. 001 as filled and submitted by Buhari "for being inchoate and manifestly in contravention of the provisions of the Electoral Act".

He argued that Buhari's failure/ refusal to attach evidence of his birth certificate and educational qualifications, "which are conditions inherent/ precedent ‎as prescribed in the form", was in breach of relevant laws in Nigeria pertaining to presidential election.

He prayed the court not to only declare the Form CF. 001 that was submitted to INEC by Buhari ‎for the 2015 presidential election as incompetent, but to also declare that the Voters Card that was attached to the form was false on the ground that as at when the voters card was issued, the 1st defendant was not a "public servant" as he allegedly stated.

"An order ‎declaring the said voters card as void for containing false information about the identity/occupation of the 1st defendant.

"An order disqualifying the 1st defendant from contesting and/or participating in the Presidential election fixed for February 14, 2015 or any date that the 2nd defendant may fix on the ground that the information contained in the 1stbdefendant's INEC Form CF. 001 is false.

"An order restraining the 2nd defendant from permitting the 1st defendant from participating in the Presidential election fixed for February 14, 2015 or any other date that the 2nd defendant may fix".

Ozoaka posed eight questions for the determination of the court, among which included; "Whether having regards to the provision of section 31(cool of the Electoral Act, as amended, and INEC Form C.F. 001 filed by the 1st defendant and the fact that the 1st defendant stated therein that he is a member of the All Progressives Congress Party (APCP), whether the 1st defendant is a member of a political party recognised by law in Nigeria which will enable him to participate in the 2015 presidential election.

"Whether or not the identification/voters card submitted by the 1st defendant to the 2nd defendant wherein the 1st defendant is shown to be a "public servant" as at January 22, 2011, is true or false?

"Whether or not the document purported to be the Statement of Result/Result Sheet of the 1st defendant's Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) provided by the Government College Katsina and the Katsina State Ministry of Education and referred to at the Press Conference of the 1st defendant held on January 21, 2015, is truly and correctly that of the 1st defendant, having regard to the name of the 1st defendant as stated in his affidavit submitted to the 2nd defendant and the name in the said document".

In a 30 paragraphed affidavit that was deposed to by the plaintiff, he averred that the 1st defendant retired from Nigerian Army on August 1985 after he was removed from office as military Head of State pursuant to a military coup.

"That I know for a fact that at a press conference held on January 20, 2015, the Nigerian ‎Army spokesman, Brigadier General Oluseye Lajide stated that the Nigerian Army is not in possession of the 1st defendant's certificates evidencing his educational qualifications".

He told the court that a Statement of Result that was eventually made available to the press by the 1st defendant through ‎Government College Katsina and a University of Cambridge West Africa School Certificate Result sheet, had the name of one "Mohammed Buhari", "and not the name of the 1st defendant as copi‎ously appeared and used in the 1st defendant's voters card. Affidavit and other documents attached to his INEC Form C.F. 001".

Both Buhari and the APC had queried the competence of all the suits, even as they challenged the jurisdiction of the court to hear them.

The two defendants also challenged the propriety of orders of Justice Adeniyi which had permitted the plaintiffs to serve the Originating Summons on them through substituted means.

Nairaland GeneralBREAKING: Stephen Keshi Signs New Nigeria Contract by gatb(op): 4:17pm On Apr 21, 2015
The Big Boss has finally put pen to paper to lead the Super Eagles for the next two years during a ceremony at the National Stadium in Abuja

Stephen Keshi has been re-appointed as Nigeria coach on a two-year contract after ten months of uncertainty over his future with the Super Eagles.

The 53-year-old signed the contract in Abuja on Tuesday following days of speculation over the decision of the Nigeria Football Federation to hand him the job.

Keshi’s previous contract ended after the World Cup in Brazil, where he took Nigeria to the second round as they lost to France in Brasilia.

He had been asked to work on a per-game basis during the country’s ill-fated qualifying campaign for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.

That failure had threatened to derail his odds of keeping the job but pressure from the government ensured that he was the only candidate interviewed by the NFF, some of whose members threatened to resign if he was given the job.

Keshi, a former captain of the Super Eagles, led the team to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, 19 years after he last lifted it as a player.

His contract is expected to last till 2017 and would be determined by success or otherwise in the Afcon qualifiers and the tournament in Gabon.

He has also been kept on a tighter leash as he is expected to take decisions under the supervision of the Technical Committee of the NFF.

Meanwhile, Keshi’s third spell in charge will see a few changes in his backroom staff as former assistant coach Daniel Amokachi has been dropped.

His place will be taken up by former Kano Pillars coach Salisu Yusuf.

Foreign AffairsEx-egyptian President, Morsi Jailed 20 Years by gatb(op): 12:24pm On Apr 21, 2015
An Egyptian court sentenced former president Mohammed Morsi to 20 years in prison on Tuesday in connection with the deaths of protesters during demonstrations against his rule in 2012. Morsi also faces charges in two other trials.

Morsi supporters attacked opposition protesters outside the presidential palace in December 2012, sparking clashes that killed at least 10 people.

Judge Ahmed Youssef dropped the murder charges against Morsi and said the sentence was instead linked to the “show of force” against protesters and unlawful detentions.

The Cairo Criminal Court issued the verdict as Morsi and other defendants in the case – mostly other Muslim Brotherhood leaders – stood in a soundproof glass cage in a makeshift courtroom at Egypt’s national police academy.

The country’s first freely elected president, Morsi took power after the 2011 overthrow of Hosni Mubarak. Morsi himself was ousted by the army in 2013 and put on trial as the new regime of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi launched a relentless crackdown on the moderate Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.

Hundreds of Brotherhood members have since been sentenced to death and thousands more jailed.

The Muslim Brotherhood issued a statement ahead of the verdict on Tuesday denouncing the judiciary – calling it a tool of repression – and calling for protests.

“The coup commander (Sisi) is exploiting the judiciary as a weapon in the battle against popular will and the democratic and revolutionary legitimacy represented by President Mohamed Morsi,” the statement said.

The Brotherhood called for “non-stop revolutionary marches and demonstrations” starting Tuesday in support of Morsi and demanding his reinstatement.

The Muslim Brotherhood, now blacklisted by Egypt as a “terrorist organisation”, has previously failed to mobilise large numbers for its rallies because of persistent fears amid a continuing crackdown.

Morsi also faces the possible death penalty in connection with two other trials, including one in which he is accused of leaking state secrets to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. He is also accused of escaping from prison during the widespread protests that eventually ousted Mubarak.
