Politics › Ambode Terminates Falomo Shopping Centre Contract by gateleo(op): 5:34pm On Aug 19, 2015
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, has approved the termination of the concession granted by the Lagos State Development and Property Corporation to Afriland Properties for the redevelopment of the Falomo Shopping Centre, Ikoyi in Lagos.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Habib Aruna, on Wednesday, the governor said the decision was informed by the recent discovery that the concession was grossly detrimental to the interests of the people of the state.

According to him, only N50m was paid by the concessionaire, Afriland Properties, for a 50-year lease of the property belonging to the government.

He said the state government, as custodian of the interests of Lagosians, was committed to the restructuring of the LSDPC to ensure it yielded positive capital returns to the state government for the ultimate benefit of the people.

Ambode had, two months ago, relieved the then Managing Director of the LSDPC, Mr. Biodun Oki, of his appointment, and appointed Mr. Jacob Agosu as Acting Chief executive Officer of the corporation, in a bid to, according to the statement, stem the tide of negative capital returns of the corporation.

Politics › NAF Rejigs Operations Against Boko Haram, Hires Dons by gateleo(op): 5:59pm On Jul 31, 2015
The Acting Chief of Air Staff, Air Vice Marshal Sadiq Abubakar, said in Kaduna on Friday that the Nigerian Air Force is re-strategising it mode of operation to tackle the Boko Haram insurgency in the North-Eastern part of the country.

He added that the NAF would look inward to enhance its research capability by bringing in experts from 15 universities in the country to partner with the organisation to “deal with some of our problems while relying on what ever support we get from the outside.”

Abubakar, who spoke to journalists during his maiden familarisation tour of NAF formations in Kaduna, said the part of re-strategising was to ensure that the officers and men of the force were exposed to current training obtainable around the world.

Though, the COAS said NAF was contending with some challenges, he noted that these were surmountable.

He added that the NAF was currently re-assessing itself on what it had done and ways to improve upon them in order to end the menace of the terrorists in the country.

He said the idea behind his visit was to meet with officers and men and to look at what they had been doing to identify areas of improvement.

Abubakar added, “We recognise that no system is perfect. So, we are re-strategising ‎and part of it is to build the capacity of our personnel so that they will be able to handle the maintenance of our airplanes and issues that have to do with the sensibility of airplanes.

“I agree with you that there are some challenges but with the help of the federal government ‎they are going to get sorted out.

“We are reassessing what we have done so far; what we need to do additionally in order to make NAF more effective in dealing with the problems in the north-eastern states.”

Politics › Nigeria’s Hope For Oil Price Recovery Dims As Iran Returns by gateleo(op): 9:19pm On Jul 20, 2015
NIGERIA’S hope for an immediate recovery in the global price of crude oil may not be achievable in the foreseeable future, as a result of the return of Iran to oil export, after reaching a historic agreement with six global powers on its nuclear programme that would pave way for the lifting of the western sanction on its country.

This development would further negatively impact Nigeria’s revenue, which has been at its lowest ebb since global oil prices began to fall in July 2014.
Iran is expected to return to the global oil market at maximum capacity within a year.
Reacting to the development, Professor Tam David-West, a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, said that the return of Iran into the global oil market will further decline the oil price.
According to him, successive administrations have refused to plan the economy as a measure to guard against possible negative impact.
He blamed the past leaders for not diversifying the economy to grow other non-oil sectors. He also noted that Nigeria can survive the price decline if the present administration continues to checkmate corruption and cut excesses.

Also speaking, Mr. Yusuf Muda, Director General, Lagos Chambers of Commerce and Industry, LCCI, said that the likely lifting of sanction on Iran, would negatively impact the economy.
He noted that the situation would cause a decline in global oil price, which would also hurt the country’s economy against the backdrop of decline reserve, rising exchange rate, and dislocation of the economy. He added that the development will worsen the country’s economy.
‘‘The Federal Government needs to ensure quality control of resources management. If President Mohammadu Buhari, demonstrates prudent management, the negative impact on the supply glut on the economy would be reduced. He also needs to ensure better compliance by relevant agencies in the area of tax recovery.”

Education › OAU Orders Students To Vacate School by gateleo(op): 6:48pm On Jul 13, 2015
The authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University OAU, Ile-Ife Monday ordered students of the institution to vacate the university following the continuous protest and shut down of facilities on the campus by workers under the aegis of Non Academic Staff Union, OAU chapter.
But the University Public Relations Officer, Mr. Biodun Olarewaju, explained that the university declared a ‘mid semester break’ not closure.
It would be recalled that the workers, who started with a warning strike penultimate Wednesday, alleged that they have not been paid their hazard allowances for about 64 months.
During the protests, ‎the aggrieved workers shut down the university’s main gate and other facilities, including the university senate building and library, while. Vehicular movements were stopped with the main entrances of the university blocked for a week.
He denied the clain that the break was connected to the protest by workers of the university, saying that the school only wanted her students to go and have rest.
His words: “at the emergency meeting today, the senate has approved that the management give the students mid-semester break, not closure. We will communicate to you in due course. The students should enjoy their Sallah celebration.”
When asked if the break was connected to the unpaid workers protest and proposed Monday (yesterday) strike, the PRO said, “I don’t think so. The management wants the students to be well prepared for their academics. The students are supposed to proceed on the break today (Monday).”
Meanwhile, Chairman of the NASU, OAU Chapter, ‎Comrade Wole Odewunmi‎, had hinted that they will embark on full shut down of the university .
“For the past 64 months, we are owned hazard allowance and we have had several meetings but yielded no results. After this, if the mana‎gement refuses to respond to our demand, we will notify the management of our strike action. This is just a notification ahead of our strike action,” he added.

Politics › Ambode Rescues Accident Victim In Lagos by gateleo(op): 5:28pm On Jul 13, 2015
Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode, on Monday alighted from his vehicle to assist in the rescue of an accident victim.

The victim, Miss Anukam Angela, who was driving alone in a wine Toyota Corolla with number plate EKY 415 CG, at about 8.15am, lost control and rammed into the median of the road along Osborne Road, Ikoyi, before the vehicle somersaulted.

Ambode, who was heading to the office through the direction before the incident occurred, ordered his convoy to stop at the scene so as to enable him to assess the situation as well as help rescue the passengers.

The governor instructed the ambulance attached to his convoy to convey the victim, who was in a state of shock, and could barely move or talk, to the Lagos Island General Hospital for treatment.

Angela’s sister, Amaka, who was contacted shortly after the crash, said she was treated for minor injuries free and discharged on the order of the governor.

She said the ambulance also conveyed her sister back to her residence at 3, Efosa Ehiedu Close, off Modupe Thomas Estate, Ajah, while the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority assisted in towing the vehicle away from the roadside to prevent traffic gridlock.

The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Habib Aruna, said, “What the governor has done is typical of him. It is indeed a demonstration of his concern to the well-being of every resident and Miss Angela is not an exception.

“He has also, with this act, shown his commitment to an all inclusive approach in protecting the lives and property of citizens in the state.”

Politics › Fake Doctor To Refund Nine-year Wage To FG by gateleo(op): 5:39am On Jul 09, 2015
Contrary to the civil service regulations, controversial Martins Ugwu, who has been working since 2006 in the Ministry of Health using the name, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, was offered a job a week after he submitted his application for employment.

The Federal Government has however ordered the Departments of Finance and Accounts and Human Resources to do a thorough computation of what he had earned for nine years with a view to ensuring that he returns the money to the government’s coffers.

“The ministry is currently computing all salaries and allowances which accrued to Ugwu during his mischievous sojourn in the ministry, for full retrieval by the relevant law enforcement agencies,” the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Awute, said.

Awute also said that since the fake doctor assumed duty at the Health ministry, he had passed only one promotion examination in 2013, which placed him on Grade Level 13 from Grade Level 12.

Ugwu was due to be promoted as Assistant Director in the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, a parastatal of the Federal Ministry of Health, before he was exposed.

Awute stated this on Wednesday in Abuja where the owner of the certificate, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, called on security agencies to protect him because his life was being threatened.

He also noted that Ugwu had collaborators in the ministry, adding that based on this, “we have sent another petition to the police to interview him to name his sponsors.”

The PS said it was necessary to place it on record that the ministry did not employ any of its members of staff directly, but through the Federal Civil Service Commission which has the statutory powers to do so.

Awute said, “Mr. Martins Ugwu Okpe, who hails from Ogbadibo Local Government Area of Benue State, got himself employed fraudulently using the stolen documents of his childhood friend and best man, Dr. George Davidson Daniel, who has offered to appear at this press briefing to clear his name. Martins Ugwu was offered an appointment by the FCSC on August 30, 2006 and was posted to the Federal Ministry of Health in September same year.

“The surprising thing about Ugwu’s appointment is that he applied for the job on October 10, 2006. He was subsequently offered the job on October 17, 2006 and he applied for an identity card on the 19 of the same month.”

Politics › Port Harcourt Refinery: 90% Rehabilitation Work Completed by gateleo(op): 3:03pm On Jul 06, 2015
The rehabilitation work underway at the Port Harcourt refinery has reached 90 per cent, giving indications that the refinery may soon open for production.

The update on the ongoing work was given by the Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, Bafred Enjugu.

Enjugu said the refinery in Alesa-Eleme, Rivers State, in south-south Nigeria constituted 47 per cent of the nation’s total Production capacity.

Channels Television’s correspondent, Emmanuel Ereyi, visited the refinery to get a first-hand assessment of the level of rehabilitation on the long abandoned oil production company.

Nigeria, a leading crude oil producing country in Africa, relies hugely on imported refined petroleum products for its citizens, since the refineries in the country stopped operations years ago.

The new administration of President Muhammadu Buhari had promised to rehabilitate the refineries and make them operational, as the nation could not continue to rely on imported products.

Politics › Call Dogara To Order, Gbajabiamila Group Tells Buhari by gateleo(op): 11:04am On Jul 02, 2015
Members of the House of Representatives who are in support of Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila on Wednesday evening appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to call the Speaker, Yakubu Dogara, and members of his group to order.

They accused the All Progressives Congress’ members on the side of Dogara of allegedly colluding with the Peoples Democratic Party to polarise the ruling party to give room for them to later defect to the PDP.

This was one of the issues they raised when they met with Buhari behind closed-doors at the Conference Hall of the First Lady’s Office inside the Presidential Villa on Wednesday evening.

Copies of their presentation to the President were made available to journalists at the end of the meeting also attended by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo.

The 30 lawmakers who attended the meeting on behalf of their colleagues were led by Gbajabiamila.

They said the President’s intervention was needed in order to save the party’s integrity.

They demanded that Dogara be asked to return to their fold and announce the other four principal officers positions in the House as directed by the party as it has always been the convention.

They said, “It is noteworthy that Mr. President and the governors had strongly put their weight behind the party and had severally admonished the House to abide by the party’s position.

“The 39 APC members in the House continue to collude with the PDP to flagrantly disobey Mr. President, the governors and the party with a view to bringing the party and government to ridicule before Nigerians.

“The conduct of the 39 APC members colluding with the PDP is tantamount to affront, ultimately targeted at polarising our party so as to give room for many of them to decamp to the PDP.

“It is therefore imperative for Mr. President to take a stand and save the integrity of the party by calling to order, the 39 members, which include the Speaker and the Deputy Speaker, to respect, honour and obey our party Leaders and their directives.

“In conclusion, Mr. President, we as loyal party members shall continue to abide by the party constitution, respect and honour our party leaders and their directives.

“We strongly appeal to you to direct the Speaker to return to our fold and be truly elected Speaker on APC platform. He should be directed to announce the other four party principal officers positions as directed by the party as it has always been the convention.

“We sincerely appreciate Mr. President for the audience trusting in his ability to successfully mediate so as to save our great party, the APC, from further embarrassment.”

The lawmakers said while Gbajabiamila and the party’s choice for the position of Deputy Speaker had openly congratulated Dogara and his deputy, the opposition and the 39 APC members continued to hold the APC leadership in contempt.

They wondered what would be the reward of the 174 of them that have remained obedient and loyal to the party.

While noting that the Speaker’s group had cited the Federal Character principle as the reason why they will not honour the party’s directive on the choice of the remaining principal officers, the lawmakers said that principle was not applicable to the National Assembly.

“It should be noted that the Federal Character principle as embedded in the 1999 Constitution (as amended) is not justiciable and of no legal consequence.

“Its provision in S.14 of the Constitution is only applicable to appointments in Federal Ministries and Agencies.

“The House of Representatives is not an agency of the Federal government and the principal officers’ positions are elective and not by appointment.

“If the Federal Character is applicable to the National Assembly, then both the Senate President and the Speaker cannot come from the North, one of them should be advised to step down,” they argued.

Gbajabiamila later told State House correspondents that he led the lawmakers who belong to the APC caucus to meet with the President in order to iron out the issues that had arisen since June 9 and find a way forward.

He described the meeting as a very successful one, saying the APC caucus and the party would come out bigger, stronger and better for it.

When asked what the President told them, Gbajabiamila said Buhari is a party man who believes in party supremacy and the party’s ideologies.

When asked why Dogara would be absent at the meeting when he claimed that it was for APC caucus, the lawmaker said the Speaker could have other engagements.

He said, “The Speaker probably has other engagements. There are a few members of the caucus that are not here. We could not get everybody here.

“This is a representation of the caucus. When we are talking about the caucus, we are talking about 210 members. You did not find all the members here.

“This is a representation of the 210 members.”

When reminded that all those who attended are members of his camp, Gbajabiamila said, “It is not about me and we need to get that clear. Yes, they voted for me but the idea is that they supported the party.

“That is who we are and there is nothing more to be said about that. It is not about any individual.”

When also asked the way forward after the meeting with the President, the lawmaker said the party’s will would be done.

He said the sooner all lawmakers recognised the fact that they did not get to the House as independent candidates, the sooner they would chart a way forward.

Foreign Affairs › America's Supreme Court Makes Gay Marriage Legal by gateleo(op): 7:36pm On Jun 26, 2015
The US Supreme Court made same-sex marriage legal throughout the nation Friday in a much-awaited landmark decision that triggered wild jubilation and tears of joy.
In a 5-4 ruling, the highest court in the United States said the Constitution requires all 50 states to carry out and recognize marriage between people of the same sex.

President Barack Obama, in heartfelt remarks, praised the ruling as “a victory for America.” The court decision marked a fresh coup for the White House, coming a day after the Supreme Court upheld an important and disputed section of the president’s signature health care reform.

“Today we can say in no uncertain terms that we’ve made our union a little more perfect,” Obama said at the White House, which changed its Twitter avatar to the rainbow colors of the growing gay rights movement.

“This decision affirms what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts — when all Americans are treated as equal, we are all more free.”
It also made the United States the 21st country or territory in the world that recognizes same-sex marriage as legal.

He took a brief phone call from Obama, who told him: “Not only have you been a great example for people but you’re also going to bring about a lasting change in this country.

“And it’s pretty rare where that happens so I couldn’t be prouder of you and your husband. God bless you.”

Obergefell, who was live on television at the time, replied humbly: “Thank you, sir. That means an incredible amount to me.”
Also in the vast crowd outside court as the life-changing news filtered through were Robert Westover, 51, and Tom Fulton, 57, who hugged and kissed.

“It feels like my birthday, the prom, our wedding day. It’s hard to express the intensity of this moment, that our love now is equal,” Westover told AFP.
The case was brought by 14 same-sex couples, and the widowers of two gay couples, including Obergefell, who had challenged de facto bans on same-sex marriage in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee.

All four states had insisted in their respective constitutions that marriage could only be a union between a man and a woman.
“The Fourteenth Amendment (providing equal protection under the law) requires a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex and to recognize a marriage between two people of the same sex when their marriage was lawfully licensed and performed out-of-State,” the court ruling said.

Marriage has been a core institution in society since ancient times, “but it has not stood in isolation from developments in law and society,” reasoned Justice Anthony Kennedy, who delivered the ruling.
To exclude them from marriage, Kennedy said, would deny same-sex couples “the constellation of benefits that the states have linked to marriage.”

Voicing dissent was Chief Justice John Roberts, who expressed concern that the court was making a decision better left to elected state legislatures.

“If you are among the many Americans — of whatever sexual orientation — who favor expanding same-sex marriage, by all means celebrate today’s decision,” he said.

“Celebrate the achievement of a desired goal. Celebrate the opportunity for a new expression of commitment to a partner. Celebrate the availability of new benefits.

“But do not celebrate the Constitution. It had nothing to do with it.”
The decision came two years to the day after the Supreme Court, in another major ruling, struck down a controversial federal law that denied US government benefits to wedded gays and lesbians.

“This transformative triumph is a momentous victory for freedom, equality, inclusion, and above all, love,” said Freedom to Marry, one of several groups battling for LGBT marriage rights.

“We’ll remember this day for the rest of our lives,” added the It Gets Better Project, another gay rights organization, in a mass email to supporters.

But the conservative Family Research Council expressed outrage, saying “no court can overturn natural law.”

“Nature and nature’s God, hailed by the signers of our Declaration of Independence as the very source of law, cannot be usurped by the edict of a court, even the United States Supreme Court,” it said.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, whose state has also prohibited same-sex marriage, said the fight going forward was now one of “religious liberty.”

“No court, no law, no rule, and no words will change the simple truth that marriage is the union of one man and one woman,” he said in a statement.

“Nothing will change the importance of a mother and a father to the raising of a child — and nothing will change our collective resolve that all Americans should be able to exercise their faith in their daily lives without infringement and harassment.”

Travel › South Africa Sets Up Visa Office In Port Harcourt by gateleo(op): 11:00am On Jun 26, 2015
The South African High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mr Louis Mngani, says visa office established in Port Harcourt is to boost operations between Nigeria and South Africa.

In a statement signed by Mr Opubo Inko-Tariah, the Special Adviser, Media and Publicity of the High Commission, Mngani made the remark at the inauguration of the South African e-visa office in Port Harcourt on Thursday.

According to him, since 1994 when the first elected South African president came to power, the tie between the two countries gets stronger by the day.

Mngani expressed the hope that the presence of the centre would be beneficial to residents and boost trade between the two countries.

He said that the choice of Port Harcourt was due to its status as an economic hub in the country.

The South African Consular General, Mugesi Monaisa, said that the visa centre was among the three established in the country to palliate the suffering prospective visitors and tourists experienced in obtaining visas to South Africa.

Monaisa said that the centre would provide an advice for those ready to do business in South Africa.

In his speech, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, stated that the state is investors haven as it is the most hospitable and lucrative place for investment.

Politics › Ambode Declares Second Lekki-epe Expressway Toll-free by gateleo(op): 11:09am On Jun 22, 2015
The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has assured residents that tolls will not be collected at the second toll point on the Lekki- Epe Expressway.

Ambode made the remark at an interactive session with journalists at the Banquet Hall of the Lagos House, Ikeja, a statement said on Sunday.

The governor, in the statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Habib Aruna, said his concern was ensuring the completion of the road.

He said, “We must start thinking of the future concerning that road. We said we will have an International Airport in Epe, and an Export Processing Zone in Lekki and a Deep Seaport also in Lekki.

“Should we not start thinking about how we will improve and create a 10-lane road between Ikorodu, Itoikin, Epe and Ijebu Ode so that people can go out from there? There is no point constructing the road, paying tolls and in five years’ time, the road is gone.”

The governor said once the Lagos-Badagry Expressway, which was being expanded into 10-lane, was completed, the community would be opened up for business activities.

He added that his administration would make careful efforts to grow the tourism potential of the state.

He said, “As more means of transportation come on board, the more than 600,000 private car owners and 120,000 motorcycles that are being put on the road in the state on a daily basis will reduce in number.”

He said his administration had decided to scale up governance by rearranging the civil service through the realignment of some ministries and agencies, while creating a new Ministry of Wealth Creation and Employment.

Ambode said, “We have said this is a government of continuity, but it is continuity with improvement. It is about making life easier for the people. We are receptive to new ideas and that is why we are going to be creative, innovative and thinking out of the box.”

They arrived at Obasanjo’s Hilltop Mansion, Abeokuta, at about 9.10am in about seven Sports Utility Vehicles.

The senators and other All Progressives Congress chiefs proceeded into the inner chamber of former President’s home as soon as they alighted from their vehicles.

It is yet unclear why the politicians have come to see Obasanjo.

I care less who the speaker or leader of the senate is...... it is very important to sheathe individual sword and work with the Saraki and Dogara as both the Senate President and Speaker of House of Representatives, respectively for the interest of our Great country Nigeria. That's how a true president behaves, thank you for setting examples on how to be a good Leader PMB......

Nigeria will be Great again..........
