Africa should “prepare for the worst” as the coronavirus begins to spread locally, the World Health Organization’s director-general said Wednesday, while South Africa became the continent’s new focus of concern as cases nearly doubled to 116 from two days before. South Africa’s health minister, Zweli Mkhize, this week called that kind of rate “explosive” in the country with the most cases in sub-Saharan Africa. Fourteen of the latest cases were from local transmission — and six were in children under 10. Though the pandemic is in its early days on the continent, health experts have warned that even facilities in Africa’s richest nation could be overwhelmed by the virus’ spread. “I think Africa should wake up. My continent should wake up,” said WHO chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, who comes from Ethiopia. Crowded conditions in poor areas could lead to even faster transmission, experts say. Countless South Africans continue to pack into commuter trains and minivan taxis. But the annual pilgrimage of the Zion Christian Church, which attracts about 3 million people, was cancelled. “We have low-income workers who cannot afford to self-isolate or take time off work,” said public health expert Dr. Atiya Mosam, who also worried about the large population without clean water or sanitation or vulnerable from HIV or tuberculosis. Others asked how a person can self-quarantine in a crowded slum. The continent has several of the world’s fastest-growing cities. Despite widespread calls for “social distancing,” a cashier at a popular pharmacy in Johannesburg confided that some customers found it rude when she suggested they swipe their payment cards themselves to limit contact. Elsewhere in the store a shopper determinedly filled a cardboard box with “anti-germ” soap, and hand sanitizer was out of stock despite calls to stop panic buying. Also Wednesday, sub-Saharan Africa saw its second death from COVID-19, in Burkina Faso, which has one of the continent’s highest number of cases but has not imposed measures such as closing borders or banning religious services. Sudan previously reported a death. In Kenya, police said a man accused of having the coronavirus was beaten to death. A police report obtained by The Associated Press said the man was returning home from a night out Wednesday when a group of youth approached and “took advantage of his drunkenness.” In Ethiopia, the U.S. Embassy noted a rise in anti-foreigner sentiment after cases emerged there. “Reports indicate that foreigners have been attacked with stones, denied transportation services, being spat on, chased on foot, and been accused of being infected with COVID-19,” a security alert said. Africa’s most populous country, Nigeria, announced restrictions on the entry of travelers from countries with more than 1,000 coronavirus cases, including China and the U.S., and suspended visas on arrival for their citizens. Nigeria has had eight cases of the virus, all in people recently arrived from abroad — one of the latest a 6-week-old baby. The country said one of the new patients, an American, had entered via a land border, a first. Three other African nations announced their first virus cases: Gambia, Zambia and Djibouti. Thirty-three of Africa’s 54 countries now have cases, with a total of at least 529 midday Wednesday. Somalia, which announced its first case this week, closed schools and universities for two weeks and warned against public gatherings as the country with one of Africa’s weakest health systems tries to stop the virus’ spread. “This is really a very scary moment,” said Hassan Kafi, a medical student in the capital, Mogadishu. The country has suffered from nearly three decades of conflict. Uganda, which has no cases, banned travel to the worst-affected countries. It also suspended religious gatherings and restricted the number of people at weddings to 10 in a country known for mass ceremonies. Health experts from some 20 African nations participated in a video conference with doctors in China on how to contain the virus. “This is an extremely important step in terms of knowledge share,” said Kenya’s cabinet health secretary, Mutahi Kagwe. Mogomotsi Magome in Johannesburg, Tom Odula in Nairobi, Kenya; Elias Meseret in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia; Mohamed Sheikh Nor in Mogadishu, Somalia; Josphat Kasire in Nairobi, Kenya, Rodney Muhumuza in Kampala, Uganda and Sam Mednick in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, contributed

Good Morning, Great Veterinary Colleagues, I'm honored to be admist great veterinary medical students of all levels and institutions within Nigeria, individuals of high pedigree and intelectual . It will be recalled that University of Agriculture Makurdi took over the mantle of leadership of NAVMS around July, 2018 in a similar convention which took place in the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN). Since assumption into office of the National Leadership of NAVMS lead by Comr Attah Agbese the Nigeria tertiary institution had embacked on a Nation wide strike which lasted for about 4 months and extended til the end of the 2019 general elections which most schools resumed directly into exams and most institutional quarters /offices were shut down during this quiescent time . The host school University of Agriculture Makurdi was a session plus backward and in a bid to rush, the school administration had enforced all rapid mechanism so as to meet up with other institutions. The Students of veterinary college had not complained in anyway of this abrupt action but had engaged the NAVMS senate for a convenent time to host the NAVMS BENUE 2019 convention and all prosponement and shifting was done with the concent of the NAVMS Senate ( president and secretary of all AVMS ). On this note, I'll wish to make my own submission that as aspirants of a noble profession, let us stop blaming ourselves and rather in harmony , come together in other to achieve the task which is ahead of us and for those who feel disatisfied. Please, let us bury our grievences and dissatisfaction and lets forge together as a one undivided entied body. Thank you " The success of NVMA starts from our coordination of NAVMS " - Tetra Comr Gaza Kure #gazakure #navms #nvma #benue2019 #uam #loc #convention #nigeriaassociationofveterinarymedicalstudents

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Sabo Nanono, on Monday, said Nigeria was producing enough food to feed itself and send to neighbouring countries. He described the cry by some Nigerians of hunger in the land as laughable, insisting that there was no hunger in Nigeria. The minister, who spoke at a press briefing to mark the 2019 World Food Day in Abuja, said, "I think we are producing enough to feed ourselves. I think there is no hunger in Nigeria; there could be inconveniences. When people talk about hunger in this government, I just laugh." According to Nanono, food is very cheap in Nigeria compared to other countries. |

The South African government has welcomed the US imposing sanctions on the controversial Indian-origin Gupta family for running a "significant corruption network" in the country, saying the interest of justice must not be shackled by any boundary or border. The sanctions, announced by the US treasury department on Thursday, were targeted at brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta, and South African businessman Salim Essa. They are accused of using their friendship with South Africa's former president Jacob Zuma to profit financially and influence ministerial appointments. "The Gupta family leveraged its political connections to engage in widespread corruption and bribery, capture government contracts, and misappropriate state assets. Treasury's designation targets the Guptas'' pay-to-play political patronage, which was orchestrated at the expense of the South African people," Sigal Mandelker, Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, said in a statement. The sanctions prohibit US persons from engaging in transactions with the four men, or entities owned or controlled by them. #southafrica #nigeria #politics

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu has called on Nigerians to shun violence and continue to live in peace and harmony in order to build a better Nigeria. The Governor made this call today at a Special Jumat Service organized to commemorate the 59th Independence Day Celebrations at the Lagos State Secretariat Community Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja. Sanwo-Olu who was represented at the event by his deputy, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat stressed that the nation cannot develop if there is violence, killing and fighting amongst its citizens. He, therefore, urged everyone with a violent disposition to have a rethink, as it is ungodly to kill anybody in Islam. According to him, “It is clear in Islam that if you kill a soul, you have killed a nation. Whatever the grievances are, let us all sit down and resolve it, to have a nation where we will live in peace and harmony, where we will be able to fulfill Allah destiny”. He disclosed that his dream for Nigeria is for all Nigerians to live in peace and utilize their God giving talents for a better nation which cannot be achieved when there is fighting, no peace and violence. Speaking further, the Governor stated that Nigeria is a good country and it will be better if all citizens are upright, do what is right always and care for one another. “If we care for our neighbours, our nation will be great, whatever action we take we must understand that it affects others, as such whatever the occupation you practice, know that your action will affect others”.

President Muhammadu Buhari declared Tuesday in New York that the present Nigerian government is facing the challenges of corruption head-on. Presenting the country’s National Statement as the fifth speaker on the first day of the General Debate during the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74), the Nigerian leader also said the country gave “notice to international criminal groups by the vigorous prosecution of the P&ID scam attempting to cheat Nigeria of billions of dollars.” Holding social media outlets responsible for fuelling major crimes such as mass killings, President Buhari called on major tech companies to be alive to their responsibilities, adding that, “They cannot be allowed to continue to facilitate the spread of religious, racist, xenophobic and false messages capable of inciting whole communities against each other, leading to loss of many lives. This could tear some countries apart.” He also declared that, “No threat is more potent than poverty and exclusion,” noting that, “They are the foul source from which common criminality, insurgency, cross-border crimes, human trafficking and its terrible consequences draw their inspiration.” Describing poverty “as one of the greatest challenges facing our world,” President Buhari noted that, “Its eradication is an indispensable requirement for achieving sustainable development,” while highlighting his administration’s efforts to overcome the challenge. #gazasdairy

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Sunday alleged that President Muhammadu Buhari was going to the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) for another showboating without articulating any definite objectives, plans and proposals to attract tangible benefits to the nation. It also alleged that attending such an important meeting of world leaders and policy makers without a clear-cut national agenda showed that the Buhari Presidency was not committed to the nation “but only going out for another showboating on the international platform”. The opposition party’s spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, made these allegations in a statement in Abuja. Parts of the statement read, “Is it not lamentable that while other leaders are heading to the meeting with well-articulated national proposals that will boost their nations’ competitiveness on international engagements, the Buhari Presidency is going empty with zero capacity to engage; a clear signal that it will equally return empty? “The sad effect of such leadership failure is worsened by the acceptability issues trailing the rigging of the February Presidential election, for which the Buhari Presidency is largely lacking in confidence and poise to vigorously engage other world leaders on issues. “In over four years of this administration, the Buhari Presidency has not been able to harness opportunities presented by such important events despite huge resources deployed for attendance.

The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations has said that Nigeria and 40 other nations across the world are in need of external food assistance. FAO said this on Thursday, in its latest quarterly report, titled Crop Prospects and Food Situation. The report said, "Nigeria and the other 40 nations need the external assistance to achieve food security, due to the conflicts, which is the primary cause of high levels of food insecurity and adverse weather conditions - particularly rainfall shortages in Africa - acutely affecting food availability and access for millions of people." The countries on the list, which include 31 in Africa, remained unchanged over the last six months. The 41 countries currently in need of external food assistance are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic People's Republic of Korea, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Eswatini, Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Iraq, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syrian Arab Republic, Uganda, Venezuela, Yemen and Zimbabwe. President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja Sunday for New York, United States to participate in the 74th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA74) which opened on Tuesday, September 17. A statement to DAILY POST on Thursday signed by Femi Adesina said that the President’s participation at this year’s gathering of world leaders is particularly significant as it coincides with Nigeria’s Presidency of UNGA. Recall that on June 4, 2019, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Prof. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, was unanimously elected as the President of UNGA74 – an indication of the country’s high esteem in the global reckoning. This marks the second time Nigeria would be occupying that prestigious position following late Maj-Gen. Joseph Nanven Garba’s election during UNGA44 in 1989.

A court in Japan on Thursday acquitted three former executives at the company that runs the Fukushima nuclear power facility crippled by a tsunami-spawned meltdown in 2011 of criminal responsibility for the disaster. A magnitude 9.0 earthquake off Japan's northeast coast on the afternoon of March 11 that year triggered an enormous tsunami that overwhelmed Tokyo Electric Power Co's (TEPCO) Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Waves as high as 14 metres (46 feet) high caused meltdowns and hydrogen explosions that spewed radiation into the atmosphere and forced mass evacuations, resulting in the world's worst nuclear accident since Chernobyl in 1986. The disaster shocked Japan, which shut down the nuclear plants that had for decades been the source of cheap energy for the world's third-largest economy. Lawyers prosecuting the case had sought five-year prison sentences for TEPCO`s former chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata, as well as former vice-presidents Sakae Muto and Ichiro Takekuro on charges of professional negligence resulting in death and injury.
