Phones / Microsoft Releases $200 (#72,000) Windows 10 Laptops For Students by geekbabanla: 2:28am On Jan 24, 2018
In a bid to topple the Chromebooks, Microsoft has released new set of convertible PCs and Laptops with prices less than $300 (#108,000) and $200(#72,000) respectively. The devices come with Microsoft’s latest Windows 10 and free software to aid the studies of students.

This includes two new Lenovo devices coming at great prices for their specifications. The Lenovo 100e, a brand-new Intel Celeron Apollo Lake powered PC, has a starting price at just $189 (less than #70,000) and The Lenovo 300e, an affordable 2-in-1 convertible PC with pen support, comes at $279 (app. #100,000).

Microsoft also released tow new devices from JP- one of its largest partners. They are the Classmate Leap T303 laptop with Windows Hello, starting at $199 (less than #72,000) and The Trigono V401 2-in-1 with pen and touch, starting at $299 (less than #108,000). These new devices join the HP ProBook x360 11 EE, which continues to be one of Microsoft’s best-selling 2-in-1 devices in education at just #108,000 and the recently released HP Stream 11 Pro G4 EE PC starting at #81,000. Since the new devices are joining this line up, then we think there’s no need worrying about their specifications as these devices have pretty cool specifications like 4GB RAM, HD screen and very good battery life among others.

Fact is you will be truly getting value for your money, as the software alone is worth more than the money. They come with built in office 365 and tools like Word, OneNote, and Teams etc which will effectively assist teachers and students in over 146 countries.

Microsoft also has some new partnerships in STEM learning. They will be partnering with BBC Worldwide Learning to bring the stunning BBC Earth natural history film Oceans: Our Blue Planet to classrooms and museums around the world. They will also be partnering with LEGO® Education to offer a new free online Hacking STEM lesson plan that has students use the Pythagorean Theorem to explore and measure topography in 2D/3D space.

Phones / Apple To Soon Cancel The Iphone X by geekbabanla: 2:19am On Jan 24, 2018
A credible source has revealed that Apple may very soon cancel the iPhone X which is Apple’s greatest flagship of the moment. According to AppleInsider, KGI Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo says disappointing sales of the phone model will lead to the cancellation of the model “with production ceasing in the summer”. The last time Apple cancelled an iPhone model after a generation is in 2014 with the iPhone 5C.

According to Kuo, lack of interest by the Chinese in the iPhone model is the main main reason behind the cancellation. Big screen phones (phablets) are loved so much in China but consumers prefer the iPhone 8 Plus as they believe it is more optimised than the iPhone X. He also mentioned that this does not mean things are gloomy for Apple as the company would even make a 5% growth in the first 6 months of 2018. This is because they have three flagship phones in the market at a time (iPhone X, 8 and 8 Plus).

He also said he believes Apple will end the 2018 calendar year with a 10% growth as the device will be replaced by three new iPhone X-inspired designs: a second generation 5.8-inch iPhone X, 6.5-inch iPhone X Plus and a “$650-750” (#235,0000 – #270,000) 6.1-inch iPhone SE replacement which will be fitted with Face ID. Apple hopes it will be the latter two that once again excite the Chinese market.

Phones / Instagram’s New Feature Shows Activity Status Of Your Friends by geekbabanla: 1:31pm On Jan 19, 2018
Instagram has added a new feature for its Android and iOS users which enables you to see the activity status of your friends. Although, there is no official announcement from the company, the feature seems most available for most users but not for everyone, so it is likely it is still under testing.

This feature is enabled by default in the app settings, with it, you can see the activity of people you have messaged below their name through your direct message inbox. It appears for people you have previously messaged or you follow. If the user is browsing Instagram at that very moment, the status shows “Active now”.

Phones / Cool Whatsapp Tricks You May Want To Know by geekbabanla: 6:46pm On Jan 18, 2018
Written by: Ravinder Ravi

Trick 1: To spy on your never replying friend

Your friend has disabled Read Receipt in Whatsapp and still if you want to know whether he/she reads your message ?

Send a two seconds voice message . Voice message will be auto-downloaded and you will see a blue tick, once the receiver plays the message, even if he disabled Read receipt in Whatsapp.

Trick 2: To escape from your spying friend

Your over-possessive friend is trying to spy on you whether you are reading her/his Whatsapp messages, by sending 2 seconds voice message. If you play it by curiosity, then you will be caught, because your friend will see blue ticks once you hear the voice message.

So, if you don’t want to send blue ticks but still want to listen the voice message, then go to file explorer and open the voice note from there using any video or music player.

Phones / TECNO Introduces Its Best Screen Ever Through The CAMON CM by geekbabanla: 10:02am On Jan 13, 2018
A new TECNO Camon Series is out, it is the Camon CM. It is the first frameless full-screen display smartphone by TECNO and represents an upgrade in the camera of previous Camons- which are known for their cameras. Eric Liu, Brand Manager of TECNO Mobile, Nigeria spoke highly of the new product and on TECNO’s desire to continue to satisfy the desires of Nigerians and Africa at large.

In his words, “the smartphone has been reinvented and OEMs globally are always on the lookout for the next big thing to talk about. At TECNO, we take pride in our ability to understand and meet our consumers’ needs, and eventually surpass their expectations.”

The frameless device simplifies multi-tasking and offers users an opportunity to split their screen (18:9 screen support single window 1:1 split-screen operating with only one step), so that they can handle more than one task while still being able to see more on either of the split windows.

Speaking about the exclusive sales and partnership with TECNO Mobile, the Managing Director of 3C Hub Mr. Xia Song stated, “we are excited about our partnership with TECNO and the opportunity to launch the CAMON CM with them. As always, we always strive to deliver superior smartphone retail services to end-users thus, signing an exclusive partnership for the launch of the CAMON CM is a big deal for us.”

The device will retail for #47,000 in Nigeria in city blue, midnight black and champagne gold colors.

Samsung introduced the 18.5:9 display with the Samsung s8/s8+ last year and on the Note 8 also. Thanks for the comment boss

Phones / Finally! Samsung Galaxy S9’s Specs Revealed Through Its Retail Box by geekbabanla: 9:07am On Jan 13, 2018
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is expected to be unveiled in February 2018, but an alleged retail box that got pictured might have revealed some of its specs for us. As expected, the smartphone is an upgrade of the Samsung Galaxy S8 that was released in 2017, things like stereo speakers and variable aperture for the Dual Pixel 12MP camera have been implemented in the S9.

It comes with a 5.8-inch display like the S8 and also with an Iris scanner for verification/authentication. With Samsung reintroducing the variable aperture, it definitely has some things in stock for us that will be useful. We expect to see 1000fps videos for the first time since Samsung says it’ll shoot Super slow-mo videos.

3. Camera
Some people see this topic and are like… “yeah, this is the one I’ve been waiting for”. So, the camera (selfie) lovers, this is for you. Nowadays, cameras are some of the biggest selling points of phones, in fact, the Tecno Camon Series is known for nothing else majorly apart from their cameras. Many have noticed that phones of their friends or siblings having lower megapixels than theirs actually produce better quality of images, well, now you’re going to know why. Gone are the days when the megapixel (MP) of mobile phones determine the quality of the camera, well, for your information, they no longer really matter. Images and video quality now depend majorly on a phone’s chipset, sensors, aperture and software processing than it depends on the megapixels and the size of the image (there’s a misconception that the size of an image also has effect on its’ quality, that’s not really true).

Also, gone are the days when there were just rear cameras, these days there are front cameras also majorly for selfies. So, one of the decisions you’ll have to make is to prioritize which one interests you the most. The good news is, so many (virtually all) phones now come with cameras in them. The bad news is, can you actually afford the phones with the best camera quality? Most times, it’s no, this is because majority of the population of phone users are the middle rangers, and usually, the costlier your phone, the higher the probability of getting a better camera quality. And you actually know this by comparing the photos and videos taken by phones and not the specs you see on the phones, it is the reason a mobile phone of 20MP may be way below a phone of 12MP in terms of their camera quality. One of the best metrics for this is night shots, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and good detail features in phones.

Some of the best camera phones based on their primary cameras presently in the market are (in descending order):

Google Pixel 2/2 XL (12MP)
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (12MP)
Apple iPhone X (12MP)
Huawei Mate 10/10 Pro (12MP)
Nokia 8 (13MP)
Sony Xperia XZ1 (19MP)
You can see that all these phones are flagship phones of their manufacturers and are very costly phones. So, if you want the best of cameras, you have to be ready to go deep into your pocket.

4. Display
You have been wondering why while you are under the sun, you find it difficult to see the screen of your phone properly, many a time you have to form a shade over the phone screen to actually see it. Some people just answer calls whenever they are in a sunny or very bright environment without knowing who the caller is, simply because they couldn’t see the phone’s screen. There is another group of people that have to put on their glasses before they can use their phones, this shouldn’t be the case. So, usually, the problem is not with your eyes, it is with your phone’s display.....

You now have a budget, next is to choose your phone’s screen size, if you are yet to read the first post on budgeting, visit https://techreviewsng.com/2018/01/03/important-things-to-consider-to-purchase-the-best-mobile-phone-for-you/

2. Phone, Phablet or Tablet
This is another area that gets people thinking continuously and makes them indecisive most times even when they have all other things sorted out. You may be thinking- “I know a Phone, I know a Tablet, but what is a Phablet?” You may even have a wrong knowledge of the two words you think you know. So, what is a Phone? A Phone is any handheld that is less than 5.5 inches screen display according to most experts. Usually, the ‘biggest’ Phones have 5.2 inches, and the most common ones come with 5.0 inches screen display. So you have most of the iPhones before the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S series before the S7/S8 being in the Phone category. This is perfect for people with small hands and aren’t bothered about a large display, they only want something that is compact and will fit into their hands and pockets easily.

A Tablet is any handheld that ranges between 7 to 10.5 inches in screen size. They are like mini computers and are able to perform most tasks that laptops are used for. They offer bigger display which may not be necessarily brighter or better depending on the specification and the user. A lot of people believe they are best for multimedia experience such as watching movies, playing games, reading e-books , among others. Most Tablets can’t do all the jobs Phones do, they usually can only connect through Wi-Fi signal only and don’t have 3G/4G connectivity of their own as most do not use SIM cards. Also, they usually can’t be used to make calls. Although few tabs are now having almost all Phone features, majority still are as we have describe them. Most notable Tablets are the Apple iPad series, the Samsung Galaxy Tab series among others.

Phablets (This is my favorite), as the name implies means PHone + tABLET. A Phablet is the interval between a Phone and a Tablet. Most Tablets are in the 5.5 to 6.5 inches range. These are the best category of mobile phones; they offer the best screen size, excellent PPIs and perfect screen-to-body ratio. Every major manufacturer has moved to this category of mobile phones. Apple used to make their iPhones as Phones (that is < 5.5 inches, usually 4.7 inches), but they’ve upgraded since the iPhone 6 and now have the “plus” versions, so there are now Phablets like iPhone 6+, 7+, 8+ and iPhone X being Phablets.

Samsung on the other hand did not wait till 2014 to manufacture Phablets and their most notable Phablet series is the Samsung galaxy Note series (latest is the Samsung Galaxy Note cool which have been massive hits with the exception of the Note 7 which had battery issues. Most recently, Samsung released their S8 as a Phablet and the S9 (2018) leaked specifications shows it is likely going to be 5.8 inches. This means Samsung have decided to upgrade their S series to be Phablets also showing there is a preference for Phablets among consumers. Leading manufacturers for African market such as Tecno and Infinix have also followed this tread with their Phantom series and Zero series respectively.

So, having considered the cost and the Screen Size you want, what’s next?

Stay tuned for subsequent posts on this…….

Written by TechGeek for Techreviewsng.com

$ represents Dollars.

# represents Naira.

So, what is this about? For years, you have been purchasing smartphones but you’ve never actually felt you got value for the money you paid, no matter how much it is, you always felt like you could have gotten a better phone. This is the first category.

The second category of buyers- you’ve always wanted some particular qualities or attributes in your mobiles, say, you want a mobile that has the best of cameras (by the way, higher megapixel(MP) doesn’t necessarily translate to best quality camera) or the best battery life, among others, but, every time you got a new phone, you’ve always been disappointed or at most not gotten as much as you expected.

The third category- anytime you want to purchase or assist a person in purchasing a mobile device, there are just too many devices to choose from (there are always too many devices to choose from) and you face the problem of which device should you choose that will best satisfy your wants/needs. If you have been facing these problems, then feel free to jump in, this is for you.

In all, regardless of your exposure, either you are a TechGeek that recommends phones for buyers or a just a buyer who does not know much about technology, you do not have to ask a million questions before getting the best phone for yourself.

Budgeting

The first and primary thing is to make a budget and be firm with it. High-end phones are getting costlier as years go by, the same way low-end phones have gotten cheaper in the same period, so be rest assured regardless of the amount you have, you can always get a phone that is good for you even for as low as $20. I have been a consultant helping people to purchase the bet phone for them for over a decade, the first question I always ask my client is “How much are you willing to spend at the maximum?” Once you are able to answer this question successfully, you have passed the preselection stage.

The importance of this cannot be overemphasized, for example, if you wish to purchase a new Samsung Galaxy S8+ that sells for above #200,000 (approximately $750) on most market and the maximum amount you can spend is #100,000. Then, automatically, Samsung Galaxy S8+ is off the list. So, make a budget and stick to it.

Presently, If your budget is around $1000 (#350,000) and above, then you may be thinking of flagship phones like the following:

Samsung Galaxy Note 8
Apple iPhone X
Huawei Mate 10/10 Pro
Samsung Galaxy S8/S8+ and many more.
If your budget is between $300 to $500 (around #100,000 to #170,000), you may think about older flagships and present middle range phones like the following:

Samsung Galaxy S7
Tecno Phantom 8
Infinix Zero 5
Apple iPhone 6 and many more
If your budget is between is say $100 to $200 (around #35,000 to #70,000), the following phones may be worth considering:

Samsung Galaxy J7
Tecno Camon CX Air
Tecno Spark K7
Infinix Note 4 and many more
Also, there are ofcourse phones that are less than a $100 (< #35,000) that would till satisfy your need.

Note: As Africans are known to also patronise refurbished phones very well (which is not a bad thing, although not advisable especially if you can afford a new one), the above prices may not apply as you may get a refurbished iPhone 6 for as low as #70,000. Regardless of the one you are going for between New and Refurbished phones, budgeting will always come to play.

As a final note on Budgeting, it is essential you separate your needs from your wants unless except you have above a $1000 to spend. Your needs are the most important things you need in a mobile, that is, they are not negotiable, they are like the main reasons you want to purchase a phone, they may include things like Making and Receiving calls, browsing the internet et cetera. Your wants are things you desire in a phone but does not necessarily mean you cant do without them, examples may be fingerprint sensors, NFC et cetera.

We’ve talked so much on Budgeting already, we’ll continue with other criteria in subsequent posts. Stay tuned………..
