You now have a budget, next is to choose your phone’s screen size, if you are yet to read the first post on budgeting, visit https://techreviewsng.com/2018/01/03/important-things-to-consider-to-purchase-the-best-mobile-phone-for-you/

2. Phone, Phablet or Tablet
This is another area that gets people thinking continuously and makes them indecisive most times even when they have all other things sorted out. You may be thinking- “I know a Phone, I know a Tablet, but what is a Phablet?” You may even have a wrong knowledge of the two words you think you know. So, what is a Phone? A Phone is any handheld that is less than 5.5 inches screen display according to most experts. Usually, the ‘biggest’ Phones have 5.2 inches, and the most common ones come with 5.0 inches screen display. So you have most of the iPhones before the iPhone 6 and the Samsung Galaxy S series before the S7/S8 being in the Phone category. This is perfect for people with small hands and aren’t bothered about a large display, they only want something that is compact and will fit into their hands and pockets easily.

A Tablet is any handheld that ranges between 7 to 10.5 inches in screen size. They are like mini computers and are able to perform most tasks that laptops are used for. They offer bigger display which may not be necessarily brighter or better depending on the specification and the user. A lot of people believe they are best for multimedia experience such as watching movies, playing games, reading e-books , among others. Most Tablets can’t do all the jobs Phones do, they usually can only connect through Wi-Fi signal only and don’t have 3G/4G connectivity of their own as most do not use SIM cards. Also, they usually can’t be used to make calls. Although few tabs are now having almost all Phone features, majority still are as we have describe them. Most notable Tablets are the Apple iPad series, the Samsung Galaxy Tab series among others.

Phablets (This is my favorite), as the name implies means PHone + tABLET. A Phablet is the interval between a Phone and a Tablet. Most Tablets are in the 5.5 to 6.5 inches range. These are the best category of mobile phones; they offer the best screen size, excellent PPIs and perfect screen-to-body ratio. Every major manufacturer has moved to this category of mobile phones. Apple used to make their iPhones as Phones (that is < 5.5 inches, usually 4.7 inches), but they’ve upgraded since the iPhone 6 and now have the “plus” versions, so there are now Phablets like iPhone 6+, 7+, 8+ and iPhone X being Phablets.

Samsung on the other hand did not wait till 2014 to manufacture Phablets and their most notable Phablet series is the Samsung galaxy Note series (latest is the Samsung Galaxy Note cool which have been massive hits with the exception of the Note 7 which had battery issues. Most recently, Samsung released their S8 as a Phablet and the S9 (2018) leaked specifications shows it is likely going to be 5.8 inches. This means Samsung have decided to upgrade their S series to be Phablets also showing there is a preference for Phablets among consumers. Leading manufacturers for African market such as Tecno and Infinix have also followed this tread with their Phantom series and Zero series respectively.

So, having considered the cost and the Screen Size you want, what’s next?

Stay tuned for subsequent posts on this…….

3. Camera
Some people see this topic and are like… “yeah, this is the one I’ve been waiting for”. So, the camera (selfie) lovers, this is for you. Nowadays, cameras are some of the biggest selling points of phones, in fact, the Tecno Camon Series is known for nothing else majorly apart from their cameras. Many have noticed that phones of their friends or siblings having lower megapixels than theirs actually produce better quality of images, well, now you’re going to know why. Gone are the days when the megapixel (MP) of mobile phones determine the quality of the camera, well, for your information, they no longer really matter. Images and video quality now depend majorly on a phone’s chipset, sensors, aperture and software processing than it depends on the megapixels and the size of the image (there’s a misconception that the size of an image also has effect on its’ quality, that’s not really true).

Also, gone are the days when there were just rear cameras, these days there are front cameras also majorly for selfies. So, one of the decisions you’ll have to make is to prioritize which one interests you the most. The good news is, so many (virtually all) phones now come with cameras in them. The bad news is, can you actually afford the phones with the best camera quality? Most times, it’s no, this is because majority of the population of phone users are the middle rangers, and usually, the costlier your phone, the higher the probability of getting a better camera quality. And you actually know this by comparing the photos and videos taken by phones and not the specs you see on the phones, it is the reason a mobile phone of 20MP may be way below a phone of 12MP in terms of their camera quality. One of the best metrics for this is night shots, Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and good detail features in phones.

Some of the best camera phones based on their primary cameras presently in the market are (in descending order):

Google Pixel 2/2 XL (12MP)
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 (12MP)
Apple iPhone X (12MP)
Huawei Mate 10/10 Pro (12MP)
Nokia 8 (13MP)
Sony Xperia XZ1 (19MP)
You can see that all these phones are flagship phones of their manufacturers and are very costly phones. So, if you want the best of cameras, you have to be ready to go deep into your pocket.

4. Display
You have been wondering why while you are under the sun, you find it difficult to see the screen of your phone properly, many a time you have to form a shade over the phone screen to actually see it. Some people just answer calls whenever they are in a sunny or very bright environment without knowing who the caller is, simply because they couldn’t see the phone’s screen. There is another group of people that have to put on their glasses before they can use their phones, this shouldn’t be the case. So, usually, the problem is not with your eyes, it is with your phone’s display.....
