TV/MoviesMy Experience At Isale Eko Shooting ‘giddy Up’ Birthed ‘gangs Of Lagos’ ―Osiber by geesilver(op): 10:19pm On Apr 12, 2023
The Director and Producer of Gangs of Lagos, Jade Osiberu has explained that her experience at Isale Eko while shooting another movie called Giddy Up initiated her thoughts around ‘Gangs of Lagos’.

Jade, while speaking to journalists at a Press briefing recently in Lagos, said they became characters in the story as she saw a mother cooking dinner and feeding her children.

She thought about what it would feel like to live in Isale Eko, stuck there yet desiring more for herself and her children.

According to her, she wanted to humanise people who live lives people don’t understand, saying it is a revelatory film.

Osiberu, therefore, stated that the movie is a story of empathy, love and dreams

“Twelve years ago, while I was shooting a series called Giddy Up in Isale Eko, across the window from where we were, I could see into another building’s window section and the people living there.

“Immediately, they became characters in my story. I saw a mother cooking dinner and feeding her children.

“I thought about what it would feel like to live in Isale Eko, stuck there yet desiring more for yourself and your children.

“I wanted to humanise people who live lives we don’t understand. It’s a revelatory film. It shows political thuggery. It’s a story about empathy, dreams, and love. I also hope people are entertained,” she said.

Speaking also, Nigerian Actress, Adesua Wellington said she played a character that required so much from her physically and emotionally at the same time, adding that she had always been somewhat physical, but most people don’t know that side of her because she has not played many of those roles.

According to her, she did physical theatre for five years; Hence, it was a muscle that she had been itching to scratch, and for it to be done in a way that she would be proud of as well.” She said.

“I played a character that required so much from me physically and emotionally at the same time. I have always been somewhat physical, but most people don’t know that side of me because I haven’t played many of those roles.

“I did physical theatre for five years, so it was a muscle that I have been itching to scratch, and for it to be done in a way that I would be proud of as well,” she said.

Gangs of Lagos is a high-stakes, gritty, and hard-hitting action crime-thriller, with an authentic storyline, centred on a group of childhood friends who each have to navigate destiny, growing up on the bustling streets and neighbourhood of Isale Eko, Lagos.

The feature film features Tobi Bakare, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Chike Osebuka, Chioma Chukwuka, Iyabo Ojo, Olarotimi Fakunle, Alabi Pasuma, Funke Williams, Mr Marcaroni, Zlatan amongst many others.

PoliticsBREAKING: How $22m Calabar Channel Dredging, INTELS Contracts Cost My Job — Hadi by geesilver(op): 9:54pm On Apr 12, 2023
For the first time since she left office in 2021, the former Managing Director of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Hadiza Bala Usman, revealed in her book titled: “Stepping on Toes”, how her battle to streamline excesses in the nation’s port system cost her job.

According to her, the refusal of the authority under her watch to pay $22 million for the dredging of the Calabar channel and the renewal of the INTELS Boat Service contracts caused her to lose her job as the MD of NPA…..CONTINUE READING

In the book, the former NPA boss who revealed issues behind the dredging of the Calabar Channel, said by the end of her first six months as Managing Director/CEO of the NPA, it was obvious to her that she was going to be swimming with sharks.

She said, although she had some inkling of irregularities, there was no way of knowing the pervasiveness until one got into the system.

Usman said dredging of the four ports would throw up additional risks with an attendant increase in insurance premiums due to insecurity issues and inadequate road infrastructure.

“In addition, decisions as to the destination of cargoes are at the discretion of the consignee. To that effect, consideration for the cost of transportation of cargo to the ultimate destination is a major factor in reaching a decision. Lagos remains the commercial capital of the country and most consignees prefer to ship their goods through the Lagos ports where there are ready consumers. Goods designated for other parts of the country are then transported by road by middlemen or directly to consumers.

“Consumers may also receive the goods in Lagos and make their own arrangements for transportation.”

She further explained in chapter seven of her book that, there is the vexed issue of the shallow draughts of the ports outside Lagos, except for the Onne Ports, which she said has an average depth of 12 meters.

She said none of the eastern ports has a draught deeper than 8 meters, and that even the 8 meters were achieved at the Warri Port with the Escravos Channel in 2019.

Usman said the answer to the question of why NPA hasn’t dredged the Warri, Onne, Port Harcourt, and Calabar Ports, is that the ports are currently river-based ports with limitations of depth because of the design depth of the quay structure.

Usman said her problems started in 2017 when her office received a letter from the Ministry of Transportation, entitled: ‘Joint Venture Partnership between the Nigerian Ports Authority and Messrs. Niger Global Engineering and Technical Company Ltd on the Management of the Calabar Channel,’ with a petition attached by the minister from the law firm of Martin Aguda & Co.

“The law firms were solicitors to Messrs. Niger Global Engineering and Technical Company Ltd and requested the minister’s intervention in their client’s claim for the sum of $22m purportedly owed to their client by the NPA.”

She said upon investigation as directed by the minister of transportation, the authority found no proof of the work that the company claimed to have executed, even though they had already received the sum of $12.5m.

She said NPA set up a committee, which discovered several irregularities surrounding the work and that the NPA was therefore constrained to decline the request for payment and instead, demand a refund of the sum previously paid.

In chapter 8 of the book, Usman spoke about the Integrated Logistics (INTELS) boat service contract. She said, “The Nigerian government adopted the landlord ports model, which allows for separate roles and tasks between public and private sectors. 25 private terminal operators out of about one hundred bids received for the three major categories of cargo that were established in accordance with global best practices emerged from this exercise. INTELS was one of these 25 terminal operators,” she added.

She said the company is better known for the service boat operations management, which was a constant source of altercations between NPA and INTELS from 2017 until the end of her tenure

Why do you think they should even do census now when the country is not stable and the current administration is ending?

There's no country in the world that does census without including ethnicity and religion as part of their data. Is this a country? I refuse to be enumerated and be part of this deceit.
it wasn't planned for this year but 2020 but due to covid it was shifted till 2023, alot of resources have been put into it, from trial census to EAD, procurement, trainings and retraining etc. Only if you know the levels of work done so far, what is left is just the final stage of it. Which is few trainings and the exercises.

I don't know why people are afraid of being enumerated, you can't transfer aggression from INEC to NPC. To different entities. It's only reasonable to understand the meaning of census and how important it is for national planning for both private and government

Since Nigeria presently did not protect my people during the election, Imagine individuals threatened a while tribe in Lagos and carried out their act and up till now nothing has been done even the president and all the entire people in government are silent like it means nothing.

Can you tell me which tribe in Nigeria has ever been treated like that, the silence of the government is like an approval, just imagine if it was the Fulani that they threatened and see what the president would have done and the outrage it would have caused.

So they are trying to tell the Igbos that we don't matter in Nigeria and we will let them know that we matter....

For me I will tell every Igbo person living in Lagos to not be counted, if they didn't let our votes count why do they want to count us....
...... and you believe everyone you tell will reason and follow your directives. You keep this type of mind set it would never help you grow. Threat has always been there long time ago, how about the ethnic profiling in other regions. Should they reason like that because of few ones. Is it only Lagos that is conducting it no, it's nationwide so you need to change your mindset and learn to respect your host

..... Census is not about Igbo and other tribes, this is a national issue. I hope your civil disobedience will not land you where you don't like. I wish you the best

it's supposed to be done every 10 years the last time we had it was 2006 so it's long overdue since the previous administration. It was even plan for 2020 but covid prevented it from taking place. I think it's not bad if we have it now cos lots of resources have been invested in it that if carryover it might not likely come to reality due to change of government and policies
