naptu2: One of the benefits of the BRT system is the physically segregated lanes.

The BRT system in Lagos is run on 3 models; (1) segregated lanes (2) priority lanes (3) regular bus service.

1) Segregated lanes: A concrete divider is erected on the road to section off one lane from the others. The sectioned off lane is reserved for BRT buses. This ensures that the BRT buses are not caught up in traffic jams.

2) Priority lanes: A yellow line is drawn on the road to demarcate the BRT lane. At peak periods (rush hour, etc) this lane is reserved for BRT buses. At other times any vehicle can use this lane.

Senator iyiola omisore pays cancer patients bills

Succour has come the way of Dorcas Adepitan and Omolara Onibudo, two cancer patients as Senator Iyiola Omisore has paid their N2.5m medical bills.

Before the senator’s gesture, Adepitan, nine and Onibudo, 20, had cried out for financial assistance to enable them to combat the cancers.

PUNCH Metro had on December 12 published the pathetic story of Adepitan and Onibudo who were diagnosed with the cancer of the bone and cancer of the lip respectively.

Omisore presented the N2.5m cheque to the two patients under the auspices of Eko Lions Club at the Lions Club International Institute in Lagos on Thursday.

He thanked The PUNCH and the Lions Club for their intervention in bringing the plight of the patients to limelight, saying without them, succour might not have come their way.

He said if not for the publication, the wrong impression would have been created that Nigerians live in a society of heartless and insensitive people.

Omisore said, “While it may be true that wicked and heartless people abound everywhere, it is also true that humane and sensible people are not in a short supply.

“It behoves us to always draw attention to cases needing humanitarian support, confident that God is able to touch hearts and raise help in ways distinctly His; never must we despair, lose hope or give up the battle for a better society.

“Let’s move from here to educate and enlighten everyone that when we give a helping hand, we are not only discharging our God-given charge but also giving a token back to the society that has given us so much.”

He promised to redouble his efforts to see to it that cases such as Adepitan and Onibudo’s would automatically be taken over by the government or some organisations for remediation without passing through appeal in the media.

He urged Nigerians to learn to be their brother’s keepers, saying that judging by what the people were passing through in the country today, the people needed an “avalanche of Good Samaritans.”

“By that way, we shall drastically reduce frustration, distress and criminal activities in the land and the high walls of bitterness and hatred will come crashing down like the Berlin Wall of yore. Our society will be the safer and saner for it,” Omisore said.

At the event, Professor Emeritus and Founder of African Cancer Centre, Olufemi Williams, said an estimated 500,000 Nigerians died from cancers yearly.

He said close to $200m (N31.2bn) was spent yearly by Nigerians who went for treatment of cancer.

He said his centre needed only between $40m (N6.24bn) and $50m (N7.8bn) to stop people from going abroad for cancer treatment.

Williams said, “One thing I find in Nigeria and other parts of Africa is that whenever they want to build a house, they start from the roof. And by the time they get to the foundation, there is no more space.

”With just $50m, Nigeria could be brought to international limelight in cancer cure. There is need for the relevant authorities to build the necessary institutions in the country to address the scourge.”

When our correspondent sought the views of Adepitan and Onibudo, they were grateful to Omisore for coming to their aid.

Onibudo said specifically that the gesture had rekindled her belief that there are some Nigerians that are kind-hearted.

ONly 38 firefighters in kwara state

Kwara State, with a population of about three million people and large land mass, has only 38 fire fighters, investigations have revealed.

Also, the 16 local government areas have only three fire stations. It has two stations in Ilorin – Unity, which is its operational office and one on Ahmadu Bello Way – while the third one is in Omu Aran.

The station, located on Ahmadu Bello Way, near the Kwara State Government House and Kwara Hotels, is the headquarters of the fire brigade in Kwara State.

The three fire stations have only eight fire engines and other ancillaries as well as 18 fire ladders.

Though officials at the head office of the Fire Service declined comment on their staff strength and number of fire services and facilities, a reliable source confirmed our correspondent’s findings.

However, the Chief Fire Officer, Kwara State, Mr. Olayinka Raji, said the brigade in 2012 got 188 distress calls and saved properties estimated at N1.99bn. He added that fire damaged property worth N214,755,800 in 2012.

He said the state government had given its approval for the service to recruit about 50 more fire fighters, adding that the recruitment would soon commence.

He commended the state government for what he called its support and assistance to the brigade. He said the fire service had sufficient equipment for its duties.

Raji identified the lack of cooperation from members of the public during emergencies as one of the challenges of the brigade.

According to him, there is the need to extend fire service coverage with sufficient equipment and operational facilities to other local government areas.

The chief fire officer added that there should be periodic recruitment of fire service personnel to beef up the staff strength of the brigade.

Raji also said more funds should be provided for the service to enhance its operations.

He advised the residents to be more safety conscious and avoid acts capable of causing fire disasters.

Raji said, “Members of the public should always obey safety instructions; they should avoid smoking in bed and should switch off all gas/electrical appliance when not in use.”

He also advised them never to overload an electrical point to avoid over heating, adding that they should keep all matches/fire lighters/fire works away from children.

“The residents should also avoid storage of petrol at home or on transit and should not drop cigarette ends carelessly. It is also needful for them to avoid the use of multi-ways adaptors; use one appliance on a socket and avoid bush burning,” Raji said.

Some of the residents, who spoke to our correspondent on Wednesday, appealed to the state government to provide more and functional fire stations, at least, each in the 16 local government areas.

They said property worth several millions of naira had been lost to fire inferno which could have been saved or reduced with efficient, well equipped and well staffed fire service.

An Ilorin resident, Mr. Samuel Ajayi, said people in the state had lost property worth millions of naira to fire disasters in the state.

“Many people, including farmers and traders, have lost their valuables to preventable inferno. Something should be done and urgently too to address this problem,” he said.

Another resident, Alhaji Kamaldeen Jimoh, said government’s intervention was urgently needed to reduce avoidable loss of property to fire.

He also called on corporate organisations in the state as well as wealthy individuals to come to the aid of the fire service.

“The state government should urgently help the brigade and provide them enough staff, stations, equipment, other operational facilities as well as good incentives so that they can efficiently perform their duties,” he said.

Tribalism among nigerians especially between ibo and yoruba cultures is very rampant, take for example, almost every thread on this forum has to have at least one tribalist post on there, why is it like this, why can't nigerians just work together for once and come together as a nation, instead of blaming this tribe for the whole country's problems and blaming the other tribe for doing this or doing that, isn't that why were supposed to be a country to work together, yet we keep blaming our leaders, maybe if we didn't really care if the president was from the north or south u never know the country might be better today.
