Education / Lautech ASUU Denies Final Year Students Sor; To Wait For Service Till Next Year. by genjb: 3:58pm On Nov 16, 2018 |
One might ignorantly think the actions of the Academic Staffs of Universities' Union, Lautech chapter chaired by Dr. Biodun Olaniran since the inception of the lingering crisis bilwedering the institution is purely selfless and for the betterment of the institution as a whole. But as time goes on, it became obvious to note that the ASUU chapter could as well be termed as part of the oppressors of the institution and the students in particular. Evident from its selfish decision to withhold the results of all students, final year students in particular, thereby denying them the opportunity to serve their father land along with their colleagues. The decision to keep mute in connection with the recent increment in tuition of students of Ladoke Akintola University affirms their total acceptance to choose to support the course of oppression to the students. They are callous cowards that would employ the service of gallant soldiers to fight for their rights without putting the welfarism of the soldiers into consideration. It is at a time of struggle for stability following the 18 months strike that the ASUU chapter is least expected to join a nationwide strike. At this end, I would not hesitate to totally blame this union of retrogressives for the academic instability and degradation of the best state university in Nigeria. I hereby join the final students to fight for the release of their SOR and to stop the selfish union from using their futures as bait. #SayNoToLautechASUU #UnionOfSelfishInterestChasers #ReleaseFinalYearStudentsSOR #StopBeingWickedAndCallous ~generaljb@gmail.com |
Education / Lautech Secretly Plans To Increase Tuition Across All Levels To #300,000 by genjb: 9:27am On Oct 04, 2018 |
Students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso have continued to be the victims of the irresponsible behavior of the two owner states; Osun and Oyo. Their only hope is not be diagnosed of heart attack someday. That is why the normal ladokite, wouldn't escape from the hands of high blood pressure. Recall that the universities' tuition had earlier been increased from #65,500/#72,500 to #120,000/#150,000 for freshers of the set 2016/2017 who were merged with those of 2017/2018, this year. All indications seem that the increment is not sufficient to run the school properly, since the owner governments had instructed the school to take care of itself from its internally generated revenue. Fortunately, the management had tried their best to recover for the lost time as she made sure that there were no significant hitches which could disrupt the academic activities of the school in the last 8months. Probably for the first time in recent times, Lautech would finish an academic session in close to 8months. However, students are left to battle with the hope for a new session, as their school mails appear to be as dry as deserts with no notification of resumption. However, the governing council led by Prof. Afolabi in conjunction with the school management has started plans to increase the tuition of students across all levels to #300,000. Should this be successful, an enormous disaster awaits the future of the Lautech community. Now, the 300lvl and 400lvl students, who presently pay #62,000 would be required to pay #238,000 more while the 200lvl who had their tuition fee increased earlier this year to #120,000 would have to pay #180,000 more. Distastefully, this is happening in a school which is greatly populated by citizens of Osun and Oyo states where the governors are owing the workers several backlog of salaries. The only hope for the ladokite now is for the federal government to take over this property from the reckless owners in order to save the future of thousand students and staffs. Again, if Lautech tuition is increased to #300,000, there is no doubt, the number of dropouts would exceed the number of the remaining students. #LadokitesSayNoToOppression #OurTuitionMustNotBeIncreased #WeWantResumption #IrresponsibleOwnerStates ~olanipekunabdulah@gmail.com(08085197328) |

Ujawissy:Backdoor admission is also rampant in federal institutions. Another example is your own case where you said only 20+ were admitted based on merit for a course whose quota is up to 100. Where do the remaining 80 students come from. There are expected to be catchment areas where some other students may be admitted but still, opportunities should be given to those who thrive to have high scores by making the Merit cut off mark accommodate up to 70% of the students and the remaining comes through catchment and connection. I don't think there is that public institution already in Nigeria that admits 80% of its students for competitive courses like Medicine via Merit. The height that can happen is 20% or so and it is very rare. 6 Likes |

I would be talking about the process whereby aspirants are being admitted into our Federal and State Universities especially into competitive programs like Medicine, Law, Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing etc. Generally, it is required of aspirants to sit for the UTME and Post Utme examinations and those whose marks are up to the universities' released cut off marks are thus admitted. Unfortunately, it has become a tradition that students who thrive to score high marks are being denied admission every year in most schools simply because of the excessively high cut off marks that is always being released by these schools. As someone who is very conversant with the system, I would like to tell you that cut off marks for example; Medicine, are intentionally raised to the extent that those that become admitted using the cut off do not exceed 10 out of the expected 100 that are meant to be admitted. The remaining 90 are then admitted through back doors and connections. That is when someone with 300+ jamb result would not get admitted while someone with 220 will be given admission. Examples are the cut off marks recently released by Unilag and OAU, 81% and 79% for Medicine respectively. If you ask an insider well, he/she will tell you that those that score up to the mark are not more than 10 or thereabout. Another example is the first admission list released by LAUTECH where only seven candidates who score up to the cut off mark were admitted for Medicine. It is a pity that it has been like this for years, where more qualified candidates are denied admission because they are not well connected. This could also affect the quality of graduates that would be produced. As a 200level Medical student, I would tell you that there are some of my colleagues who if things were done properly should not be in Medicine. Some of them would ask for the chemical formula of e.g; Sodium hydroxide. It is that barbaric. I want to use this medium to appeal to all stakeholders in the education sector especially the NUC, to please for the sake of the masses who thrive to study hard despite various other challenges, to set out modalities and monitor those institutions on how our students, at least 80% would be admitted through a reasonable Merit cut off (and not the usual 10% or thereabout admitted through Merit caused by excessively high cut off marks) and the remaining 20% through connections since someone has said ruling the tradition out totally is impossible. This will go far to create opportunity for the brilliant less privilege student, it will also bring about equality since as Nigerian citizens, we all own the facilities used in the training of our students. 16 Likes 3 Shares |
