Sports / Tuchel Named Premier League Manager Of The Month After Chelsea Win Four In A Row by gentle136(m): 3:39pm On Nov 12, 2021
Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has won the Premier League's Manager of the Month award for October, having taken the Blues to the top of the table.

The German tactician guided Chelsea to four straight wins last month, including a 7-0 thrashing of Norwich City at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues conceded just one Premier League goal in October and scored 14 as they bounced back in style from their first top-flight defeat of the season – a 1-0 loss to Manchester City on September 25.

Chelsea beat Southampton 3-1 at home at the start of the month, before keeping three consecutive clean sheets with 1-0 and 3-0 victories away to Brentford and Newcastle United either side of crushing the Canaries.

No side in the division conceded fewer goals (one) or kept more clean sheets (three) in October than Chelsea, while only Liverpool scored as many goals (14). The Blues also averaged the most possession of any team in the league, with 64.7 per cent.

Tuchel fought off competition from Reds boss Jurgen Klopp, West Ham's David Moyes and Crystal Palace's Patrick Vieira to become the third manager to win the award this season.

He continues a trend of managers from London clubs claiming the prize, with Nuno Espirito Santo – recently sacked by Tottenham – winning in August before Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta picked up the gong in September.

Sports / Arsenal Sign Tomiyasu As Bellerin Joins Real Betis On Loan by gentle136(m): 9:32am On Sep 01, 2021
Arsenal's deadline day signing Takehiro Tomiyasu.

Arsenal have signed versatile defender Takehiro Tomiyasu from Bologna and allowed Hector Bellerin to join Real Betis on loan for the rest of the season.

The Gunners are reported to have paid Serie A side Bologna £17million (€19.8m) to land the Japan international on deadline day.

Tomiyasu, 22, had previously been linked with Tottenham but has instead joined their north London rivals on a long-term contract.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta told the club's official website: "Takehiro is a strong defender with good experience in Serie A and at international level.

"He's a versatile defender with great defensive qualities, high technical ability and composure on the ball.

"He will be an important member of our squad. We look forward to Takehiro joining up with us when he returns from international duty."

Long-serving full-back Bellerin has left the bottom side in the Premier League to return to his homeland with Betis.

The 26-year-old, who joined the London club a decade ago, won the FA Cup three times during his time with the Gunners.

Goalkeeper Alex Runarsson and midfielder Reiss Nelson also departed on loan for the rest of the season before the window closed, though Ainsley Maitland-Niles has remained at the club.

Sports / Pochettino Praises Influential Messi After PSG Debut In Win Over Reims by gentle136(m): 2:34pm On Aug 30, 2021
Mauricio Pochettino revealed how Lionel Messi has already had an impact on his Paris Saint-Germain team-mates after the new superstar signing made his long-awaited debut for the club.

Messi was introduced as a 66th-minute substitute during PSG's 2-0 win over Reims on Sunday, coming on to replace former Barcelona colleague Neymar in the Ligue 1 fixture.

His brief cameo saw him complete 20 of his 21 attempted passes while he was also fouled three times, the six-time Ballon d'Or winner having received a rousing reception upon his introduction from both the home and away fans inside the stadium.

Pochettino was pleased to see his fellow Argentinian settle in quickly to life in French football, revealing how the 34-year-old's presence has lifted his squad as they bid to reclaim the league title.

"He brought serenity to the team. It's important to get off to a good start, even for him," the PSG head coach said after Messi's maiden appearance.

"He was happy and he is well integrated into the group. It was a matter of common sense not to start him in this game.

"The welcome was something very beautiful to see and hear, from our supporters but also from the fans of Reims. Messi was very happy about it.

"The motivation for competition is there for everyone, but his presence brings optimism. Everyone feels it, he has an influence on the other players."

While Messi may have been the main attraction heading into the fixture, Kylian Mbappe stole the show with both goals.

His brace amid speculation over his future helped PSG make it four wins from four at the start of the new league campaign, leaving them top of the table heading into the international break.

Pochettino was particularly pleased to keep a first clean sheet this term too, albeit they benefited from a VAR check that ruled out a possible Reims equaliser for offside.

"It is a significant success for us. We didn't concede a goal, which was one of our main targets before this match," the former Tottenham boss told the media.

"This is not always obvious because the fitness levels are very different from one another. Some players were returning today.

"We are at 12 points. I'm happy before these two weeks of international break."

Sports / Arteta Says It Will 'take Some Time' To Turn Around Arsenal's Form by gentle136(m): 1:57pm On Aug 25, 2021
Mikel Arteta has conceded it will "take some time" to turn around Arsenal's form following the club's worst ever start to a campaign.

The Gunners lost 2-0 to Brentford and Chelsea in their first two matches and are in the relegation zone after more than one game played for the first time since August 1992.

It is also the first time in Arsenal's 118-year history in England's top four tiers they have opened a campaign with two defeats without scoring.

Arsenal have finished eighth in back-to-back seasons and were booed off the field by their supporters at the interval and full-time in Sunday's defeat to Chelsea at Emirates Stadium.

Under-pressure boss Arteta, who has had to contend with the loss of numerous key players through injury and illness, stressed the importance of fans getting behind their side.

He said: "I have to say thank you because the atmosphere that we saw before the Chelsea game when the team was getting the introduction of every member, it was so special.

"I had goosebumps and I was feeling like nothing before. Then I think they tried to support the team very much and I know they are disappointed when you lose at home.

"There has to be some reaction, but this is a project that is going to take some time.

"You can see and tell from the recruitment that we've done and the really young squad that we have at the moment and it cannot happen overnight.

"We all want to make it as quick as possible and we know that the responsibility for us is to fight with the top teams in every competition and that's not going to change.

"I think we really need them and this group of players really needs them and the club needs them now next to us because we need that confidence, that support and that energy."

Arsenal have another chance to pick up their first win of 2021-22 on Wednesday when they travel to Championship side West Brom in the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Gunners are competing at this stage of the competition for the first time since 1995-96 after failing to qualify for European football this season.

With a big game against champions Manchester City to come next weekend, Arteta knows the importance of picking up a morale-boosting victory in midweek.

Arteta, who has suffered 20 defeats in his first 60 matches as a Premier League manager, added: "It's a competition obviously that we want to fight for. We need a win as well.

"We want to try to get players back if possible to help us because then we have Manchester City at the weekend, and to try to lift the players.

"Obviously they are hurt, the feeling is tough at the moment, they need some help as well with players coming back, and keep them together, because the spirit there is good.

"They don't need motivating. Honestly, they are really together, one thing they don't need is motivating. That is really clear, they are really trying what they can do. Give them confidence – that is what they need."

Arteta hopes to have new signing Martin Odegaard available against West Brom, while Alexandre Lacazette is back in training after recently contracting coronavirus.

Aaron Ramsdale is another in contention to make his debut at The Hawthorns after arriving from Sheffield United last week, but Arteta is unsure of his team selection.

He said: "We just got the VISA from Martin yesterday. Aaron has been a while without training, but they both want to play. We will see."

Sports / FIFA Awarded £146million In Compensation By US Department Of Justice by gentle136(m): 1:47pm On Aug 25, 2021
FIFA has been awarded with £146million as compensation for the criminal activities of former officials.

In 2015, world football's governing body was raided by Swiss authorities on behalf of the United States Department of Justice, with Sepp Blatter among over 40 officials charged.

On Tuesday, FIFA confirmed the Department of Justice had awarded a £146m compensation package to the FIFA Foundation.

This sum — seized from the bank accounts of the officials who were prosecuted — covers the losses suffered by FIFA, CONCACAF and CONMEBOL as "victims of decades of football corruption schemes".

FIFA confirmed the money will go into a newly formed World Football Remission Fund, established to help finance football-related projects.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: "I am delighted to see that money which was illegally siphoned out of football is now coming back to be used for its proper purposes, as it should have been in the first place.

"I want to sincerely thank the US Justice authorities for their efforts in this respect, for their fast and effective approach in bringing these matters to a conclusion, and also for their trust in general.

"The truth is that, thanks to their intervention back in 2015, we have been able to fundamentally change FIFA from a toxic organisation at the time, to a highly esteemed and trusted global sports governing body.

"Thankfully, we are well past that unfortunate period in history now and it's great to see significant funding being put at the disposal of the FIFA Foundation, which can positively impact so many people across the football world, especially through youth and community programmes."

In a separate statement, South American federation CONMEBOL confirmed it would receive £52m of the package.

CONMEBOL stated it would use these funds for youth camps, education, refereeing and coaching courses, community outreach and women's football

Sports / Kane Confirms He Is Staying At Tottenham by gentle136(m): 1:34pm On Aug 25, 2021
Harry Kane has confirmed that he is "100 per cent focused" on Tottenham and will not be leaving the club during this transfer window.

The England captain has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester City since admitting in May he had reached a "crossroads" in his Spurs career.

Kane was not included in Tottenham's squad for their first two games of the season as the speculation mounted, but he returned as a second-half substitute in Sunday's win at Wolves.

The 28-year-old, who is under contract until June 2024, took to social media on Wednesday to declare that he will not be going anywhere before the transfer window closes on August 31.

"It was incredible to see the reception from the Spurs fans on Sunday and to read some of the messages of support I've had in the last few weeks," he said.

"I will be staying at Tottenham this summer and will be 100% focused on helping the team achieve success. #COYS"

Kane finished as the leading goalscorer (23) and provided the most assists (14) in the Premier League last term, but could only help Spurs to a disappointing seventh-placed finish.

Talk of a possible big-money switch to City surfaced soon after, while Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United were also rumoured to have shown an interest.

City were always considered to be the frontrunners to sign Kane, however, with boss Pep Guardiola recently admitting the champions would be keen if Spurs were open to offers.

But Kane's declaration that he is committed to Spurs until at least January is a huge boost for Nuno Espirito Santo, who has had to constantly fend off questions regarding his star player's future.

Kane has spent 17 years with Tottenham, which includes four loan spells out on loan, and has scored 221 goals in 337 appearances for the north London club.

He is one of three players to have finished as the Premier League's top scorer three times or more, along with Thierry Henry (four occasions) and Alan Shearer.

The Walthamstow-born striker's 37 goal involvements last season were his most across a league campaign in his career to date, while his 14 assists doubled a previous high of seven in 2016-17.
