https://mobile.facebook.com/NYSC-Katsina-STATE-Batch-ABC-1266914023336186/ TRAVEL SAFETY TIPS FOR PCMs The Orientation Programme for the 2019 Batch "B" Stream 1 Corps Members will commence Tuesday, 18th June, 2019 nationwide. By implication, Prospective Corps Members (PCMs) shall be travelling across the length and breath of the country to the various NYSC Camps for the exercise. Towards this end, it has become very imperative for the PCMs to note the following travel safety tips and adhere strictly to them: 1. Every successful journey starts with a travel plan. PCMs, are enjoined to make adequate travel preparation before setting out on the journey. Therefore, you must ensure and crosscheck that you've packed all the relevant documents that will be requested at the point of registration. This is to guard against the danger of being asked to go back home and fetch the forgotten documents. Doing so will over expose you to our roads fraught with so many risks. 2. Kindly research your destinations thoroughly before leaving. 3, On no account should you board a vehicle by the roadside because of seemingly attractive cheap fare. It is highway to calamity. So many have fallen preys to armed robbers, kidnappers and ritualists due to such indiscreet action. You should board vehicles only from recognised parks. 4. Please, be conscious of your travel time. Journeys must be arranged in such a way that you arrive your destination latest 6 pm. Note that if it's not possible to arrive your destination at the aforesaid time, please, break the journey. 5. Avoid unnecessary argument/discussion bordering on politics and religion, among others. You may unwittingly cause offence. Keep your views to yourself. 6. Be courteous, but don't trust people too quickly and don't be loud while answering telephone calls, so as not to unknowingly divulge information that may place you on harm's way. 7. Watch your drinking habit. Alcohol dulls your senses. Always be sober. 8. Take only what you need for the journey. Don't over burden yourself with load. 9. Dress normal. Don't overdress. Conversely, don't dress shabbily, since either way, you unduly stand out. 10. Please, keep a very close watch over your personal effects. It is advisable that you carry your vital documents (certificates, International passport etc) on you. 11. Don't put valuables in your back pocket for that's always the pickpocket's first point of call. It's safer to use your front pocket. 12. Keep your family and trusted friends updated on your itinerary. The Director - General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim wishes you travel mercies, as you proceed to the respective camps in obedience to the clarion call to serve the Nation for one calendar year. Not knowing exactly what to prepare for could ruin your NYSC camp experience. In this post, I am going to show you what your first day experience in NYSC camp will be like and what you should expect. The information you are about to read on this page is crucial for your survival in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation camp. You need to read this post to the end, so that you won’t go there and mess up things for yourself. For those of you who have completed their NYSC online registration, I say congratulations to you! Please, get used to be called ‘otondo’. If anyone calls you ‘otondo’, answer the person because that is your other name in case you don’t know. Please, don’t ask me for the meaning of the name because I myself don’t know, maybe you should ask soldiers when you get to camp. For now, let’s go into the main topic of this post which is, “first day experience in Camp, and what to expect”. To make things easier and smooth for you, I squeezed out time to write this piece of awesome article, it is all for you. Read it very carefully so that you won’t miss out the vital part. The Four (4) Cardinal Points of NYSC It’s important you understand that NYSC as a scheme has Four(4) Cardinal Points, viz; The Orientation Camp Exercise The Place of Primary Assignment (PPA) The Community Development Service (CDS), and The Passing Out Parade (POP) These are the four(4) cardinal points of NYSC that every Corps member must pass through before his/her National service can be said to be completed. Our today’s topic is revolving round the first cardinal point, so let’s go there! Your journey to the NYSC orientation camp starts after receiving your NYSC Call-up letter. In your call-up letter, the state you are posted to, Orientation camp address, Date to report and other important information will be clearly stated. You’ll spend 21 days in the NYSC camp, which after you would be posted to a Place of Primary Assignment (2nd cardinal point). During the camp period, the Nigerian soldiers and other officials will be with you in camp to train you. After the 21 days in camp, soldiers will return to barracks, NYSC officials to offices and ‘otondos’ to Places of Primary Assignment (PPA). Best Time To Report To Camp Some people believe that it is better to report to camp on the 2nd or 3rd day after the camp official opening date, mostly with the view that it would help reduce too much stress, but that is not true if you ask me! I don’t by the idea at all. In fact reporting late could deprive you of so many good things, and could cause emotional trauma. Moreover, camp life is about the survival of the fittest, and there used to be good reservations for early birds. Speaking from my own camp experience, I arrived to camp a day before the camp was official opened, it helped me to secure good hostel, bunk and mattress. The following day which is the official day the camp would open. I woke up early, dressed up and went straight to the physical verification and registration point. My registrations were smooth as I really prepared adequately for camp activities. My advice is for you to go to camp a day before the official camp opening date, especially if you are posted to far a place. NYSC Camp experiences and what to expect. To make it easier and simple, we are going to break it down into parts. PART ONE Arriving At the NYSC Camp: Preliminary verification starts right at the NYSC entrance gate. At the entrance gate, your NYSC Call-up letter would serve as your ‘gate entry pass’, the security at the gate after checking your call-up letter would direct you to a police post where your luggage would be checked as to make sure you do not bring in restricted items. After that, they would give you a book to write down your name. After you have written your name, you would be given a tag number. That number is very important as you would need it for subsequent verification. Note: Always have your documents ready and handy at every registration point as to avoid embarrassment. PART TWO Accommodation stand: So, after being cleared and given a tag number, you are to immediately proceed to a point where you would get hostel and bed space. Those at the police post will direct you to that point. At the accommodation stand, you would be asked to provide the number you collected at the entrance gate. A book would be given to you to write your name, the serial number corresponding to your name is your bunk number, copy it out. At this point, you would be directed to a room to pick up a mattress. After picking up a mattress, take the mattress to a bunk which correspond to your serial number. If you fight another person over a bunk, that book you wrote your name at the accommodation stand would be used to determine the real owner of the bunk. Note: Do not expect comfort! In fact, almost all the available mattresses are too dirty, flat and some infested with bedbugs and other insects. Some mattresses are up to 30 years; older than yourself! (Lol) PART THREE Registration: After getting accommodation, the next thing is registration and documents verification. You should make sure that all the documents needed in camp are intact to avoid embarrassment. The officials will check the original of your Statement of results and other required documents . After registration, meal ticket will be given to you. Make sure you don’t loss your meal ticket because there is no replacement for that, and only the meal ticket gives you access to camp food. NYSC will feed you three times per day; morning, afternoon, night. Also, a very big tag number that would serve as your identity through your stay in camp will be given to you. They will make it to look like ID card, you are mandated to always wear the tag around your neck every time even while sleeping. The last digit on the tag is indicates your platoon. i.e. 304 5 , 056 9 , 634 0 etc, indicates platoon 5, platoon 9 and platoon 10, respectively. In case where the last digit is “0” it is platoon 10. PART FOUR Kit collection and platoon registration: After being registered, you would be assigned a platoon as we explained above. Use the last digit of your tag to identify your platoon. So, after knowing your platoon, head straight to your platoon stand for registration and collection of your kits. This can be the most annoying stage as you are likely to be given over size. The shoes, khaki etc can be bigger or smaller than you. But those that registered on time have more chances of getting their size. I guess that is one of the advantages of coming to camp early. PART FIVE Bank Account Opening : Every Corps members must open a new bank account in the NYSC orientation camp for the payment of NYSC allowance. So, make sure you come to camp with your BVN number because it would be required. Also your name on BVN should correspond to your name on the NYSC documents. After opening account, put on your NYSC kit immediately and run to the parade ground. www.facebook.com/Katsina-State-20172018-NYSC-1266914023336186/?refid=12&ref=m_basic_locale_footer |

PRINT YOUR CALL-UP LETTER: To print your call-up letter, all you need is your registered e-mail and password. 2. PRINT THE ORIGINAL COPY TWICE: You should print the original copy in colourd (twice) and then make 4 photocopies as you would need to submit some duplicates in camp. Also, make photo-copies of other documents. 3. READ YOUR CALL-UP LETTER: PCMs are advised to read through their call-up letters at least 3 times before going to camp. The orientation camp address indicated on the call-up letter is exactly where you should report for your camping. 4. Set a saving goal: Set a target on the amount you want to save monthly from your allowance. It could be 5,000, 8,000 or 10,000. Do the calculation yourself and see how much you’ll earn during your service year. You can even save beyond 10000 if you are posted to a village where the cost of living is minimal. 2. Understand the different between want and need: That you want something does not mean you need it at the time. After receiving the first allowance some corpers will fund irrelevant things like expensive (more than half of their allowance) phone, shoes, iPhone out of the allowance. There is nothing wrong with this but before going for these these things, Think! (Will this stuff be an asset or liability) if it will serve as an asset, good! Go for it. If otherwise ignore it and discipline yourself. It is a known fact that as you grow older your toy becomes expensive but you need to be careful and make good use of your scale of preference. 3. Control your eating habit: Don’t eat anyhow, eating from a canteen where a plate of food is say 200 and you don’t cook, you will eat all your allowance there. If l assume you eat twice in a day that is 400 per day for a month you have spent 12000 on feeding alone. You are left with 7800 and there are other needs. So buy food stuffs, stove, pot etc with your first or your next allowance. If you don’t know how to cook, that is not a crime, meet your mates and they’ll put you through and you’ll see it as an opportunity to learn. 4. Self dependence: It is good to be friendly but don’t let friends take advantage of you. I know of a lodge where corpers will contribute money to a girl, just for cooking. It is not wrong but don’t make it a regular thing there are differences between” I OWN ‘ and” WE OWN”. Buy what you’ll need and keep it jealously. By the time you buy food stuffs together and then you have a female corper to cook, that is where deliberation of what to eat starts coming in, you wait for someone at times before everyone eats just like partnership in business. Except you can be mature enough to handle it, do not settle for that. 5. Falling in lust: Dont date your fellow corper if you know it will not lead to marriage as most of them will help you spend your money and keep their own in the name of love. Don’t be deceived! You can imagine! Paying someone recharge card money, hair money, cloth money, body cream money or feeding a guy that claimed he did not receive alert., the list is endless…he/she may have a fiancé and that makes you an assistant boyfriend/ girlfriend. And for some smart guys they’ll eat the girl dry and complain of being a debtor. 6. Skills: God has settled every one of us. You either acquire skills or you have inborn skills. So develop it, all you need is packaging. Some corps members earn what their three months allowance will not yield in a month. Even though l said earlier that you should assume that N19800 is a huge amount, think of earning more than that in a month on your own. How? Mind your own business. 7. Grow up: You are not a kid again! forget your age, do not deceive yourself. Stop calling your parents for financial help, stand on your own, take responsibility of your own actions and they will be proud of you. You will also feel fulfilled and believe that the future is for you to manage and not your parents. 8. Be business minded: If you can manage that 19800 for your needs and business, if you get 19.8 million, managing it and establishing a standard business venture will not be hard, but if with this little money, you can do nothing then you will fail even if you have the whole world at your disposal. At times I borrow my allowance for business and I make sure I return it in due time. If you complain of little, you will complain even in plenty. Jesus is Lord and Christ. |

So, as you prepare for service, you need to take your time to study about Nysc. You need to study about nysc, so you get much acquainted about the journey you about to embark on. One way to study about nysc is to read write-up from previous corps members; that could give you clear pictures of the journey ahead. Below, are the things you should not do in NYSC camp: 1. Rudeness to soldiers, police, man 'o war and Nysc officials: In Nysc camp, nobody; not even a soldier is authorised to beat you. They only have right to give you small punishment, they may ask you to squat, sit on floor, kneal down, stand under the sun etc. A Soldier may carry big rod or cain but can never use it on you. In camp, soldiers are like toothless tigers, they are banned from beating corps members. But do not abuse that privilege. Insulting a soldier because he/she cannot beat you could make them collect your "tag number" which they have every right to collect from you. Once a soldier collect your "tag number", your service is over. So many people have been expelled through this means. Tip: Learn to add ‘sir’ to all your conversation with soldiers and Nysc Officials, though some soldiers may be far younger than you but always answer "Sir". If they collect your "tag number" for little offence, cry and beg them. Do whatever they ask you to do if that would made them to return your "tag number". 2. Lamination of Documents: Never laminate your documents. Keep them very well and do not laminate any of them. Do not laminate your Statement of result, Medical certificate, Green card and call-up letter. 3. Sexual Harassment: This is a very serious mistake that certainly would show you the camp exit gate. Sexual harassment of opposite sex is a crime. Do not harass any girl or boy. If you like a girl, walk up to her and tell her this, "I think you are special, would you mind to be my friend", then collect her number, hang around with her, buy things for her and give her confidence in doing these, you might win her heart. 4. Having $ex: In number 3 above, we went to the extent of telling you how to chase girls. But if the girl finally fall for you, having $ex with her is a great offence in Nysc camp. You would been shown the camp exit gate if caught with opposite sex. Believe me, soldiers are trained to catch people doing that. They have been in camp several sessions before you, so they know how and where to catch those doing that. If you are caught in the act, the Nysc Officials will make fool of you, both of you will be brought out on parade ground, announced and disgraced publicly before two of of you would be thrown out of camp (your service don finish be that oo). Some guys even go to camp with condoms, some girls are same way too. Don't let five minutes pleasure ruin your many years in higher institution. 5. Rape: This is a serious offence, you will not only be evicted from Nysc camp but also, it could get you locked up in prison if found guilty. 6. Drinking Alcohol or smoking: As a big boy, you want to take green bottle or smoke, right? Some of these things are being sold in Mami market (market inside camp) but are meant for soldiers and Nysc official. If you are caught drinking or smoking, you name will be sorry. 7. Jumping the Fence: Nysc camp walls are usually dwarf. Big boys and girls might think jumping the fence to take a walk outside the orientation camp is cool. You will be caught and disgraced publicly. You might even be asked to jump and go but never return again. But wait a minute, why should someone jump fence when he/she to peep into street where he/she will actually serve for 11 months. Don't jump fence, endure the three week stay in camp. 8. Fight: A normal graduate that passed through a higher institution should know that fighting is not fashionable. Fighting is not even allowed in higher institutions let alone in Nysc camp. Misunderstanding will surely come; many guys will piss at you. But don't allow devil to use you. Report every issue that could lead you to fight to Nysc officials or soldiers. 9. Do not Bath, Urinate and Excrete around, always use the bathroom and toilet. In some camp female bath outside in open field, likewise guys. This is offence. READ ALSO: Nysc terms every corps member should know 10. Stealing: Thieves are everywhere in our society. Do not be surprised if your properties got missing. But I am sorry for those that resort to steal from fellow corps members. If you are caught, you will be disgraced along with your family name. 11. The use of Forged or Fake Documents: From time to time, several criminals would want to find their way into the Nysc system. They forge result and bring fake documents to orientation camp. Many have been caught and are now in prison. What a pity! God did not call us to destruction but we have choice to decide for life and death he have given us to choose only but one. NYSC just 1 year sometimes less than that. It has a strong effect if you live right and do right and same if you do otherwise. Avoid friends that will not increase your experience positively. Avoid friends that needs you but will not help you. If you feel in secured or threatened, report. Don't avoid asking questions and making enquiries for that may be your open door to appointment letter. Don't seclude yourself from group of fellows for from them information spreads instead don't let them influence you if they negate your principles and believe. As a graduate you can do anything suffice its good and will pay. Kill "the pay is small" mindset for that will solve a lot of problems when you least expect and that opportunity accepted may lead to bigger rewards. Save...! Save.....! Save.....! That man that complain when he gets little will in same way complain when he gets an increase. Start to manage and be content with this little for indeed bigger is coming but now matters a lot. Love God with all your heart and don't judge. All powers belongs to God and to Him alone is Judgement. You will not loose your life Serving this great nation except you choose to give for her. The end of your service year will be joyful and testimony filled. Thanks...... God bless you Under the Sun and in the Rain. Watch your words for they can bless you or curse you.
