A suspected thief arrested by the police in lagos, Tokuunbo Ojo, says a master key he owned made it easy for him to steal from vehicles during public functions such as weddings and burials. PUNCH Metro learnt that Ojo recently got lucky as he stole N3.2m from a car parked at the campaign rally of the Peoples Democratic Party in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Our correspondent gathered that 49-year-old Ojo, who hails from Aramoko, Ekiti State, was nabbed by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad with the master key on Tuesday, April 14. According to the police, the suspect consulted a welder in 2013 to make the master key for him, which he used to open parked vehicles, carting away money and other valuables in the vehicles. Our correspondent gathered that Ojo had allegedly attended weddings, burial ceremonies, political campaigns and other functions where he used the key to break into parked vehicles. While speaking with PUNCH Metro, Ojo, a father of two, who lived on Agbotikuyo Street, Agege, explained that he usually dressed well and pretended to be one of the invited guests at functions before carrying out his evil deeds. He said, “I used to work as a house painter. But in 2013, my work was no longer flourishing. So I developed the idea of using a master key to steal. “I consulted a welder friend to make the key for me. I got it from him for N500. Since 2013, I had gone to high-class events for operations. I usually dressed like one of the guests and would mingle with other guests as if I was invited. “Later, I would go out as if I forgot something in my vehicle. And I would proceed to one of the expensive vehicles where I suspected there would be valuables. The master key could open any vehicle.” Ojo added that during the recent electioneering, he stole N3.2m from a car parked at the venue of a campaign rally in Abeokuta, Ogun State. He said he also stole laptops, phones and jewellery from other cars he opened. He said, “The campaign rally was in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and it was the PDP campaign rally. I saw N3.2m inside one of the vehicles I opened. Nobody suspected anything. I used the money to get a Toyota Highlander. The police have taken the vehicle from me. “My wife and two children did not know this was the work I did. I stole in order to survive. I regret my actions now. I wish I could be forgiven.” Our correspondent learnt that the police caught Ojo red-handed and arrested him at a function in Lagos after they got a tip-off about his activities at public ceremonies. The police said investigations revealed that Ojo did not work alone, adding that they were still on the lookout for his fleeing accomplices. The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the arrest. He added that the police recovered a vehicle from the suspect. He said, “The suspect confessed to using a master key to break into cars and sometimes steal money and other valuables. “We also recovered a Toyota Highlander from him.”. THE candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Ogun-East senatorial district, Dapo Abiodun, has filed a petition before the state National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the victory of the winner, Buruji Kashamu. Kashamu polled 99, 540 votes to defeat eight other candidates. Abiodun was the first runner-up in the election while Adegbenga Kaka of the Social Democratic Party was the second runner up. In the petition, Abiodun argued that Kashamu was not qualified to contest the election and that he did not score the highest number of lawful votes as required by law. The petitioner, who said he would rely on form EC8E (1) to prove his case, further alleged that Kashamu and his party, the Peoples Democratic Party, the Independent National Electoral Commission and the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, who were joined as the 2nd, 3rd and 4th respondents respectively, failed to comply with all the electoral laws. The petition read, “The election of Buruji Kashamu is invalid by reason of substantial non-compliance with the provisions of Electoral Act 2015 (as amended), the manual for Election Officials 2015, the guidelines issued for the conduct of the election.” “The election of Kashamu is invalid by reason of corrupt practices and electoral malpractices perpetrated by the first respondents in person and members and agents of the 1st and 2nd respondents in the places mentioned in this petition. “Kashamu was not qualified to contest the election.” Abiodun urged the court to nullify all the results from polling units and wards where the requisite forms were not completed, dated, signed or stamped by the concerned officials. However, the media aide to Kashamu, Austin Oniyokor, had earlier said in a statement that his principal was prepared to meet any petitioner at the tribunal, describing the APC’s allegation of rigging as unfounded. The statement read, “The claims by the APC are totally unfounded. Ordinarily, we would not have dignified them with a response. You can see that the statement is lacking in substance. If they say there were rigging, intimidation and manipulation during the election, they should supply the details, rather than hiding under some nebulous excuses that say nothing. “At any rate, the Electoral Act has made provision for the ventilation of issues arising from an election. They should go to the tribunal to prove their case.’’. SOURCE: www.punchng.com/politics/apc-heads-for-tribunal-to-challenge-kashamus-victory/ |
A Peoples Democratic Party governorship aspirant in Lagos State, Babatunde Gbadamosi, has accused the leader of the party, Chief Bode George, of colluding with the national leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to ensure PDP’s defeat in Lagos. He, therefore, called on George to resign immediately. However, in a swift reaction, George described Gbadamosi as an irresponsible man who may be suffering from a mental problem. Gbadamosi, who came fourth at the PDP governorship primary last year, said the party would have performed better at the poll if the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Musiliu Obanikoro, was given the ticket. In a series of Facebook posts, Gbadamosi accused George and other PDP leaders of using the money meant for the party to buy new homes in FESTAC, Ikoyi, Magodo and Maryland. He said, “Losers can only lead to failure. Go and enjoy your new houses in Magodo, Ikoyi, FESTAC and Maryland, all bought in election season. You have all worked diligently these last 12 years for Tinubu. You can now retire to your natural political home – APC. “You know you betrayed the party and diverted resources meant for elections. Leave quietly or be exposed and thoroughly disgraced. It is amazing how a man that cannot win his polling unit is our leader. Bode George must go and swiftly too. “In 2015, he claimed to be fighting Obanikoro, conducted shambolic primaries, got his parachute candidate and lost again. Every step of the way, he has demonstrated a befuddling poverty of judgement, insisting on bad candidates time after time. “Who has been the biggest single beneficiary of Bode George’s incompetence and inability to win? BolaTinubu. That’s why Bode George must go. It makes you wonder, doesn’t it, where his real loyalty has been this whole time.” However, George said it was funny that someone could claim he was working for Tinubu who he had been battling for the last 16 years. He said he never had direct access to funds as the money for campaigns were not given to him. He said, “This little boy who just developed into politics wants to run before he can crawl. Imagine Gbadamosi going on Twitter to say I am a mole. He said I have been working with Tinubu. He must have woken on the wrong side of the bed or probably came from another planet or something is mentally wrong with him.” http://www.punchng.com/politics/bode-george-worked-for-tinubu-pdp-chief/ |
