Foreign Affairs / Re: Gas Payments In Rubles Would Backfire On EU Sanctions by Gertyman: 1:19pm On Mar 27, 2022 |
Utycar: Am not talking about medical facilities or buildings. I expect them to have those ones. They are also rich with income from oil and gas, and were in good term with no sanctions from the west until 2014. My question is what have they been widely known for in the area of science and innovations. What medical equipments, IT gadget, or any pharmaceutical products, agricultural equipments, semi cobductors etc are coming from Russia. You can tell me those of their items you or your friends have in your possession. Thats my point. Those are items that rule the world. Everyone of course can buy anything they wanted from anywhere as long as you have the money, but those people making it are the ones that rule the world economy. |

manontree: Guy, I dey tell you o, our NL folks not just getting this analysis jare. They thought its all about the News from media hyping Russia and China up and down. I just want to ask then if China or Russia holds the largest gold reserve. They don't even know that what makes a currency stands out and get accepted as reserve currency is due to, Govt transparency, political stability and Productivity. Russia lacks the 3. China lacks transparency, China can devalue the RMB just to suite their national interest, even if those countries holding the RMB will loose the value of what they hold, which things the West will not do. |

dharmieee: I doubt the coal though, few countries stll uses coal, China the Lead. UN even have regulations on coal. Coal is the fastest Ozone layer destroyer. Renewable energy is getting popular in Europe. Several countries in Europe already investing in Wind Farm for wind energy in Europe. Iceland capitalizing on Geothermal Energy and many other too in other sources of Energy from Ocean. Most of their energy are now combined from different sources. Check out Denmark. |

djon78: Am happy we are both sharing nice comments. And I believe we can still learn from each other. Way back to BC's and AD's there were no fossil fuel, and yet they build kingdoms, pyramids and their sciences are the foundations of everything we have today. Currently, several cars are now running on electricity, and solar energy still undergoing several research to see the best monograin/chemical composition that can produce the best efficiency. There have been many failures at the beginning of each innovations before we get what we now use today. Fossil fuel has proven to be degrading our environment and in the long run will be unsustainable as natural disasters awaits the earth. It's not a matter of choice but a matter of compulsion to preserve the depreciation of the earth. That's the reason for researching into other alternatives to save the world. As for China, cheap labour is what they provided while the western countries provided the companies. Yes, sure each country is investing in what will give them advantage, but the goal of every country is also to be independent of other countries and also to increase their internal consumer market. China will not stop until she is independent of the west so as to be able to make everything it wants. That's why they launched made in china 2025. Of course Africa countries are weak, and cannot compete. The reason why every countries wants to be able to produce atleast enough products and technology they want is to be self sufficient, build wealth and increase their internal consumer market. China may have the manufacturing power, but they do not currently have the consumption power which is one of the formula for calculating gdp. I get your point, but the world is working hard to get rid of fossil fuel, else this planet will be uninhabitable in the nearest future if we still live to depend on fossil fuel. |
Foreign Affairs / Re: Gas Payments In Rubles Would Backfire On EU Sanctions by Gertyman: 6:53am On Mar 27, 2022 |
djon78: Sure, good point. No doubt about gas being very important. But in the next 10 - 20 years, the world is moving to other friendly sources of energy, and you know that mean gas will be in lesser demand compared to some other commodities the world cannot do without. And as you mentioned, the reason why Russia is holding knife to EU's neck is the proximity of Russia to EU and the already available infrastructure in places. If gas is everything without other technologies, that can even substitute Gas power e.g Nuclear Energy, Semi conductors, Software etc, then Middle East Countries should be the Richest and the largest Economy in the world. UAE is the only middle east country that realized this on time and started diversifying and investing in Science and Technology. |

Funny people here on NL writing funny comments. If not for Russia - Ukraine War, how many times did many NLders' follows international politics. But once they read emotional and one sided headlines be it from Western media source talking about how Russia will go down or from Russian sources talking about how the West will go down? then Nairalanders comments will start aligning with who is winning on that headline without proper knowledge of foreign policy. Just imagine, this news is from Russia today, what do you expect, won't you expect it to talk about how the West will go down? Have you asked yourself whether Putin and Russians will be drinking their gas in order to replace the medical supplies mostly from the West? Will they be using their gases to make what they don't produce? will they be flying on their gas instead of Boeing or Airbus plane? Why making Russian gas a big deal as if the whole world is built to need Russian gas before it could survive? How about things that doesn't need gas or have to do with Russian gas or any other fossil fuel, think about that. How about several companies from the West and other foreign investors that just left Russia market? How will Russia meet up or replenishes what they needs the supply of, from the same Western countries. Give me the substancial number of Russian companies on Fortune 500 list of companies, which are list of highest valuation companies (significantly dominated by companies from the west) controlling nearly if not more than half of the world financial capital market values, products and services around the world, an indication that every thing is not all about gas or fossil fuel. 20 Likes 2 Shares |

Elsueno: You have a very good point about dollar waning away. Of course no one likes unilateral sanctions that U.S does most time to bend the countries toward her foreign policy. But the U.S does not steal Gold from Libya. During the Second world war. The US had the largest economy due to its military-industrial complex boom then, by making and selling weapons to Europe with payment in Gold. So U.S gold has been mounted up after the second world war, not because of any stealing of Gold in Libya. |

BloomingDale: Of course Yes, I understand that they need an alliance, especially with China, but China still depends on exports, and the main China customer for export is the West, that's why the situation is not easy as said. You have to weigh your pros and cons. How many advantages will China gain from Russia than Gas? and If the West also decides to decouple from China (though very dangerous for the West), it will hurt everyone. The market and commercial activities between China and the West is like Marriage, it will be messy during a divorce. China still has more than 500 million populations she is still struggling to get out of poverty. So, it's not a good idea for China now to divorce the West because they want to save Russia. That's why they are playing the game carefully. They also don't like the West, but still, power belongs to the West. |

Elsueno: Everybody does not use dollar because they want to. Bretton wood agreement in the 40's is the reason why U.S have positioned herself for this current era. Now that everyone have accepted and uses dollar to trade and even mount up several dollar in their foreign reserve, in addition to that U.S have alot of industries occupying fortune 500, and including strong military. It will take time to ditch dollar. Nobody wants to loose their money anytime soon, so it's everyone's interest that dollar should not crash, not that like dollar anymore, but they have no choice any longer. No country is ready to loose its wealth anymore. And asides, U.S is still the largest holder of Gold in the world. It's not until China can compete and not manipulate their currency anymore.

Foreign Affairs / Re: Putin Wants Rubles For Russian Gas by Gertyman: 5:39pm On Mar 23, 2022 |
BloomingDale: Awesome, but let's do positive and negative mathematics here. I believe West will buy a certain percentage of Gas from Russia, and also pay Russia that same percentage of Rubble they hold in reserve. But what if Russia wants to buy a certain percentage of other items, which we definitely expect to be more than the total amount of Rubble the West pays them. then it will take years to accumulate the Rubbles required to pay the West to buy Planes, Pharmaceutical Products, software, Agricultural products, machine equipment, etc. That's why it won't work. Once a country's economy depends on one or two exported items, for example, Nigeria, it's a failure already. Countries with lots of innovations and varieties of items to export to the world markets are the ones balling. |
Foreign Affairs / Re: Putin Wants Rubles For Russian Gas by Gertyman: 5:29pm On Mar 23, 2022 |
BloomingDale: Being the largest exporter of anything does not matter. As long it does not sound as a sole exporter. What Russia does exports is also produced by other countries. That's why every country does business with each other. No Country is an Island of itself or self-sufficient. You need others to survive. Do you mention several other things Russia does not produce and they depend on others for? How will they buy medical equipments, Drugs, Technology Equipment, Heavy machines, Airplane etc.? Will they pay me in Rubble? And If I want to buy raw materials for production from Japan, Will I pay Japan Rubble? 1 Like |
Foreign Affairs / Re: Putin Wants Rubles For Russian Gas by Gertyman: 5:24pm On Mar 23, 2022 |
History555: It matters to Putin to reduce the effect of all these economic sanctions on Russia. That's why he said the West hasve declared economic war against Russia. If Russia's economy continues to decline, there is a risk of mass protest in Russia to oust the current administration. That's the reason for placing sanctions on a country. It's like a tool for indirect regime change demand by the West, but they expect the citizen to fight back when this happens. Why is Iran negotiating a nuclear deal? Why can't they walk away? |
