Nobody is paying in ruble. EU is still paying in euros and will continue to do so.
Gazprom wasn't sanctioned by EU so the Russian edict is useless.
EU will pay gazprom in euros, it's left for the Russian bank to change it to rubles or whatever and pay Putin.
It's a meaningless law, just some useless political point for Putin just like his pyrrhic battles in Ukraine.

Besides Putin can't just shut off the gas pipeline like it's tap water. He can’t keep oil and gas from coming out of the ground without capping wells, and storage capacity will get filled very fast if shipments stop cold, and then what what next?

And unlike what some ignorant pro putin are saying, he can't immediately switch to China or any other country such huge volumes. Russia has no pipeline to China or India. Putin will be stupid to stop 60 percent of his budget revenues.
How then will he fight his meaningless war?.
He's bluffing!

Guy you are writing so many things that has no meaning, yeah ist have you been to Russia before? Do you know the kind of medical facilities that Russia has? The only country that can sanctions Russia and they feel it is China. I have been there for 4 years and I know that Russia has almost all What you will see in the USA,UK, France, Germany with a cheaper funds.

Am not talking about medical facilities or buildings. I expect them to have those ones. They are also rich with income from oil and gas, and were in good term with no sanctions from the west until 2014.

My question is what have they been widely known for in the area of science and innovations. What medical equipments, IT gadget, or any pharmaceutical products, agricultural equipments, semi cobductors etc are coming from Russia. You can tell me those of their items you or your friends have in your possession. Thats my point. Those are items that rule the world. Everyone of course can buy anything they wanted from anywhere as long as you have the money, but those people making it are the ones that rule the world economy.

In the next 50 yes, the world will still need fossil fuel.
Creating energy is not the problem, storage is.

But ultracapacitors and several other techniques and technology are already invented and still getting improved on. Are we going to generate all energy we need at once and store forever?

The mechanism is practically impossible. There is no swift system that supports transfer of the currency just like you cannot wire naira overseas

This same issue is why RMB is not commercially viable and china has scratched its head for years on how to make importers pay in Yuan. In the end they had to continue using dollar or euro

This talk is all Nationalistic and No action

Guy, I dey tell you o, our NL folks not just getting this analysis jare. They thought its all about the News from media hyping Russia and China up and down. I just want to ask then if China or Russia holds the largest gold reserve.

They don't even know that what makes a currency stands out and get accepted as reserve currency is due to, Govt transparency, political stability and Productivity. Russia lacks the 3. China lacks transparency, China can devalue the RMB just to suite their national interest, even if those countries holding the RMB will loose the value of what they hold, which things the West will not do.

All this movement to renewable energy is just fallacy; it’s still going to take longer than 20 years. Was so shocked when. I discovered almost all the countries in the EU are still buying COAL from Russia , not just gas, COAL in this age and time!!

I doubt the coal though, few countries stll uses coal, China the Lead. UN even have regulations on coal. Coal is the fastest Ozone layer destroyer. Renewable energy is getting popular in Europe. Several countries in Europe already investing in Wind Farm for wind energy in Europe. Iceland capitalizing on Geothermal Energy and many other too in other sources of Energy from Ocean. Most of their energy are now combined from different sources. Check out Denmark.

Let me tell you
Many people are making mistakes in thinking that fossil fuel will go away quickly

I don't even see fossil fuel going away in the next 100 years.

Who would have believed that price of oil will ever reach $130 today.

For man to develop technologies to overcome fossil fuel, it will require a very big miracle

Those technologies you mentioned cannot substitute gas because they are costly and hazardous.

Gas is a very cheap source of energy and it is in abundance on the Earth.

UAE diversified into service sector that's why tourism brings them huge income.
It's not just technologies.
They invested massively in world class infrastructures, education, airlines to give them a competitive advantage

Every sensible Nation invests in things that will give them competitive advantage over other nations.

The Chinese invested in low cost manufacturing which has given them competitive advantage over other nations.
The West cannot do that because of high minimum wage which will cause the cost of goods to be away from there common man.

The Germans invested in high technological manufacturing and efficiency. Which stands them apart from others.

Likewise the Japanese even nation's like India, Brazil, Turkey etc all invested in what will give them advantage

The world has been designed that if a Nation get herself organized and focused, they will do fine.

That's why I weep for African nation's most especially Nigeria. I really weep for this Nation.

Am happy we are both sharing nice comments. And I believe we can still learn from each other. Way back to BC's and AD's there were no fossil fuel, and yet they build kingdoms, pyramids and their sciences are the foundations of everything we have today.

Currently, several cars are now running on electricity, and solar energy still undergoing several research to see the best monograin/chemical composition that can produce the best efficiency. There have been many failures at the beginning of each innovations before we get what we now use today. Fossil fuel has proven to be degrading our environment and in the long run will be unsustainable as natural disasters awaits the earth. It's not a matter of choice but a matter of compulsion to preserve the depreciation of the earth. That's the reason for researching into other alternatives to save the world.

As for China, cheap labour is what they provided while the western countries provided the companies. Yes, sure each country is investing in what will give them advantage, but the goal of every country is also to be independent of other countries and also to increase their internal consumer market. China will not stop until she is independent of the west so as to be able to make everything it wants. That's why they launched made in china 2025. Of course Africa countries are weak, and cannot compete. The reason why every countries wants to be able to produce atleast enough products and technology they want is to be self sufficient, build wealth and increase their internal consumer market. China may have the manufacturing power, but they do not currently have the consumption power which is one of the formula for calculating gdp.

I get your point, but the world is working hard to get rid of fossil fuel, else this planet will be uninhabitable in the nearest future if we still live to depend on fossil fuel.

Gas is very very important because it is energy.
It is used for absolutely everything, from running companies to running homes.
The importance can not be under emphasized

Example look at effect of Nigeria without diesel, Petrol and power for the past weeks

Energy is more like the life blood of a Nation. Without it, everything crumbles

Concerning Russian gas and Europe. The Europeans have no alternative to Russian gas for now because Russia is very close to Europe, Russia has the infrastructure already to transport gas to EU countries buying from Russia; gas pipelines to Europe.
This makes gas from Russia very cheap to European consumers

Gases from other places even the US comes at an extreme high cost to the European consumers and in addition the distance is a huge problem.

To move gas in it's liquified form LNG required tankers that will carry it along the ocean.
Carrying it in tankers across the ocean takes longer time and cannot even scratch a bit of the demand rather than simply turning the tap of Russias gas pipelines which in hours has reached it's destination

So this is a very major problem for Europe. Geographic position put Russia in so much advantage.

For Europe to even develop an alternative will take even up to 10 years to build such infrastructure and the cost will be astronomical

Europe is in a very big dilemma and no one can save them.

That's why analyst are seeing what Russia did by announcing the payment in rubbles.
It will strengthen there currency because Euros and dollars will be chasing rubble making rubble appreciate in value. Major reason Naira depreciates is because Nigeria is not an exporting Nation.

Sure, good point. No doubt about gas being very important. But in the next 10 - 20 years, the world is moving to other friendly sources of energy, and you know that mean gas will be in lesser demand compared to some other commodities the world cannot do without. And as you mentioned, the reason why Russia is holding knife to EU's neck is the proximity of Russia to EU and the already available infrastructure in places. If gas is everything without other technologies, that can even substitute Gas power e.g Nuclear Energy, Semi conductors, Software etc, then Middle East Countries should be the Richest and the largest Economy in the world. UAE is the only middle east country that realized this on time and started diversifying and investing in Science and Technology.

Funny people here on NL writing funny comments. If not for Russia - Ukraine War, how many times did many NLders' follows international politics. But once they read emotional and one sided headlines be it from Western media source talking about how Russia will go down or from Russian sources talking about how the West will go down? then Nairalanders comments will start aligning with who is winning on that headline without proper knowledge of foreign policy. Just imagine, this news is from Russia today, what do you expect, won't you expect it to talk about how the West will go down? Have you asked yourself whether Putin and Russians will be drinking their gas in order to replace the medical supplies mostly from the West? Will they be using their gases to make what they don't produce? will they be flying on their gas instead of Boeing or Airbus plane? Why making Russian gas a big deal as if the whole world is built to need Russian gas before it could survive? How about things that doesn't need gas or have to do with Russian gas or any other fossil fuel, think about that. How about several companies from the West and other foreign investors that just left Russia market? How will Russia meet up or replenishes what they needs the supply of, from the same Western countries. Give me the substancial number of Russian companies on Fortune 500 list of companies, which are list of highest valuation companies (significantly dominated by companies from the west) controlling nearly if not more than half of the world financial capital market values, products and services around the world, an indication that every thing is not all about gas or fossil fuel.

While you may have a point, US also relies on extracting the rest of the world to maintain its position, so no country is an island.
But the decision of freezing the asset of a world power and also cutting them off from assessing world reserve currency is unprecedented and will have farreaching consequences in years to come...

Other country will see the need to decouple from the dollar, at least partly and if China has become the most dominant trade partner for most of these other countries, I don't see why they should rely on the dollar that currently suffers huge inflation

Don't be surprised that the next super power will also do the same. Sanctions, Sanctions, Invasion, etc

Go to school, you won't go. Read and learn, you won't read. You think landsize is what makes economy big. Russia is the biggest country in the world by land size. So are you saying that they are the richest?
Oil is Russia major export to the world. How many other product have you seen or have in your house that is made in Russia. Texas have oil but have diversify it's economy to also focus/export advance technology, biotechnology, aeronautics, manufacturing, life science etc. This are values that are exported and used in everyday home around the world.
US, China, Japan, Germany, UK, India, France are all smaller in size to Russia but are far bigger economy cause they offer more to the world.
Fun fact, Texas produces about half of oil that Russia produces per day. So Texas is not even far off when it comes to oil.
Another fun fact, Top ten biggest economy are not major exporter of oil.
Lastly, the fact that oil is not your highest expense monthly should show you that being an oil exporter isn't as important as technology manufacturing, biotechnology etc put together

Chairman, I really respect your comment. This is what I have been trying to explain to folks here, but they keep missing the point. Thumb up to you.

All the more reason why the US should not use it as a weapon...Even if dis Ukraine issue dies down & d sanctions are lifted.... A lot of countries would start to gradually wean off the $$,..just look at what uncle Joe did with Afghanistans frozen reserves( it was totally unfair as even d terrorists of 9/11 weren't Afghans).... Personally, I think d era of dollar dominance is coming to a close, it won't die off...but it would no longer be alone....And U.S & it's vassals plundered Iraq & Libya of thier gold reserves when they invaded( Libya gold was supposed to be used for African backed currency together with other resources)..So not surprising the US have d highest amount of Gold..

U.S had trust & power when it came to the dollar, unfortunately they let it get to thier head

You have a very good point about dollar waning away. Of course no one likes unilateral sanctions that U.S does most time to bend the countries toward her foreign policy.

But the U.S does not steal Gold from Libya. During the Second world war. The US had the largest economy due to its military-industrial complex boom then, by making and selling weapons to Europe with payment in Gold. So U.S gold has been mounted up after the second world war, not because of any stealing of Gold in Libya.

In how many years? We are talking about Europe surviving the next 5 years. Even if they discover Gas in Europe, it will take at least 5 years to develop the infrastructure need to extract it and set up the pipe lines and supply chain.

But heck, they will still need Russia for the metals as Russia controls about 80% of steel and Iron.

You are wrong. Australia does have the largest deposit of Iron, and rare earth elements, and also China. so not Russia.

That is why they are going into alliance with China and other countries. No country wants the dollar to be used as a weapon against them. Africans should please unite, use one currency, trade amongst ourselves and try to be independent of other countries since we have the all the raw materials needed.

Of course Yes, I understand that they need an alliance, especially with China, but China still depends on exports, and the main China customer for export is the West, that's why the situation is not easy as said. You have to weigh your pros and cons. How many advantages will China gain from Russia than Gas? and If the West also decides to decouple from China (though very dangerous for the West), it will hurt everyone. The market and commercial activities between China and the West is like Marriage, it will be messy during a divorce. China still has more than 500 million populations she is still struggling to get out of poverty. So, it's not a good idea for China now to divorce the West because they want to save Russia. That's why they are playing the game carefully. They also don't like the West, but still, power belongs to the West.

But what products of the West are u talking about? .....what exactly those the U.S produce that Russia can't survive without...The main reason d dollar stands as currency is because everybody uses it for trade....Now if a few countries use d rubbles & Yaun doesn't & others accept it for trade( not talking about US & it's vassals)..That would obviously diminish d value of $,
Again, d main reason why everybody uses $$ is due to trust, How many countries have the US & vassals have frozen thier money due to their so called "sanctions"....The thing is, US should have never tampered with d SWIFT thing..it sends d wrong message...Let d dollar have competition whether Rubble/Yaun & our own African currency( I know dis one is impossible, but u I can dream right grin)

Everybody does not use dollar because they want to. Bretton wood agreement in the 40's is the reason why U.S have positioned herself for this current era. Now that everyone have accepted and uses dollar to trade and even mount up several dollar in their foreign reserve, in addition to that U.S have alot of industries occupying fortune 500, and including strong military. It will take time to ditch dollar. Nobody wants to loose their money anytime soon, so it's everyone's interest that dollar should not crash, not that like dollar anymore, but they have no choice any longer. No country is ready to loose its wealth anymore. And asides, U.S is still the largest holder of Gold in the world. It's not until China can compete and not manipulate their currency anymore.

They can use the their rubles to buy from the west and EU, that is assuming they are not buying from China. In return those countries can use the rubles to buy gas, oil, coal etc from Russia. Just no more dollars and Euros.

Awesome, but let's do positive and negative mathematics here. I believe West will buy a certain percentage of Gas from Russia, and also pay Russia that same percentage of Rubble they hold in reserve. But what if Russia wants to buy a certain percentage of other items, which we definitely expect to be more than the total amount of Rubble the West pays them. then it will take years to accumulate the Rubbles required to pay the West to buy Planes, Pharmaceutical Products, software, Agricultural products, machine equipment, etc. That's why it won't work. Once a country's economy depends on one or two exported items, for example, Nigeria, it's a failure already. Countries with lots of innovations and varieties of items to export to the world markets are the ones balling.

Crude oil is Russia’s biggest export, accounting for $123 billion of its export revenues, data for 2019 shows. Next on the list are refined petroleum – things like petrol and diesel – at $66.2 billion, gas at $26.3 billion and coal at $17.6 billion.

But Russia is also the world’s largest exporter of wheat, bringing in $8.14 billion from sales in 2019. It is also a big exporter of semi-finished iron – this includes iron bars and other items used to make iron products – with sales worth just under $7 billion in 2019, and a large supplier of nickel ($4.03 billion) and nitrogen-based fertilizers ($3.05 billion).

Being the largest exporter of anything does not matter. As long it does not sound as a sole exporter. What Russia does exports is also produced by other countries. That's why every country does business with each other. No Country is an Island of itself or self-sufficient. You need others to survive. Do you mention several other things Russia does not produce and they depend on others for? How will they buy medical equipments, Drugs, Technology Equipment, Heavy machines, Airplane etc.? Will they pay me in Rubble? And If I want to buy raw materials for production from Japan, Will I pay Japan Rubble?

Who told you that d aim of this policy is to help rubles. The eu are meeting with biden to draw up plans for ditching russia oil and gas. Russia wants to inflict max pain on them b4 they do that

It matters to Putin to reduce the effect of all these economic sanctions on Russia. That's why he said the West hasve declared economic war against Russia. If Russia's economy continues to decline, there is a risk of mass protest in Russia to oust the current administration. That's the reason for placing sanctions on a country. It's like a tool for indirect regime change demand by the West, but they expect the citizen to fight back when this happens. Why is Iran negotiating a nuclear deal? Why can't they walk away?
