The board’s Head, Media, and Information, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, made this disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Lagos. According to Benjamin, the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, would be doing the presentation on Thursday in Abuja at its maiden edition of the 2018 National Tertiary Admissions Performance Merit Award (NATAP-M). The JAMB’s spokesman stated that the award was in recognition of the institutions’ compliance to admission guidelines. “We want to honor these institutions for doing what is expected of them in the past years, in terms of admission performance. “Again, we looked at the most subscribed, the number of foreigners admitted gender balancing and national spread. “You know some tertiary institutions will like to localize their admission by narrowing it down to candidates from their locality. “All such practice does not give our institutions the deserved exposure and competition as obtained in institutions in other climes. “This is also partly the reason such institutions cannot attract foreign scholars. “It is also the reason why most of them find it difficult to break through in terms of global ranking, aside from research and other considerations. “We want to encourage our institutions to be having global out look and we believe that with this kind of awards, things will change for good,” Benjamin told NAN. He said those expected at the award ceremonies were: Pro-Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors of Universities, as well as Provosts of Colleges of Education and Rectors of Polytechnics. The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed a bill abolishing the dichotomy between the Higher National Diploma and Bachelor of Science holders. The legislation sponsored by Ali Isa and Edward Pwajok from Gombe and Plateau states respectively was passed for second reading in April 2017. It seeks to end perceived discrimination against polytechnic graduates (HND holders) and remove the challenges they face, especially those in the public service. Pwajok in his lead debate said the “discrimination” against the polytechnic graduates “had no moral justification”. The lawmaker said there was segregation when it comes to employment issues because “those having first degrees (university graduates) are placed on Grade level 8, while those having HND are placed on grade level 6 or 7”. According to him, the discrimination reflects in salaries as some organisations pay degree holders N100,000 at entry level, with HND holders are paid N70,000. The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) said that it would release the 2019 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results on Saturday. The board’s Registrar, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede disclosed this to newsmen on Friday in Abuja, NAN reports. According to him, the board will meet and consider the details available to be announced to the general public. “We are releasing our results tomorrow, we are having a meeting today to consider what to put out,” he said. The 2019 UTME was held from April 11 to April 18 with over 1.8 million registered candidates. Since then, the board is yet to release the results. It explained that it would first screen the entire candidates’ results to weed out those who were involved in any form of malpractice during the examination. Meanwhile, the Registrar has paraded a staff of the board, who allegedly collected N25, 000 from a 2018 admission seeker. He said the suspect was reported to the JAMB management after he couldn’t meet the demand. The registrar reiterated the board’s determination to deal decisively with anyone, including its staff, found involved in any form of infraction. ”We are not hiding anything; we are ready to deal with anybody caught and they must face the wrath of the law,” he said.
