CLIQBOY: Before you go see girls doing programming in naija..he means say water dom pass garri be dat..na only chatting dem sabi
I am a Naija lady who is currently a software developer/systems designer who started in Naija and later relocated. I strongly believe that all Naija ladies have the potential to be anything they want to be and stereotypical comments like yours discourages women from pursuing tech careers.

Elaineh:
My fellow F1 visa holders,

Looking for a job in this US where we dey, iss not beans o! Am currently a graduate student with a May 2012 graduate date. I'm seriously looking for a job right now because I don't feel like returning to Naija with its Boko Haram, corruption and other home-grown disasters. I'm looking for a job everywhere - online job boards, alumni networks and milking my few connections but nothing dey happen as of yet. I am facing a huge dilemna with regards to the dreaded "sponsorship" question." Will you now or in the future require H1 visa sponsorship"? Here are my arguments for and against full and honest disclosure:

Lie and say that I do not need sponsorship. Why?:
- If I tell a company that I do require H1 visa sponsorship, chances are that the company's online application system will detect that and trash my resume/application before any human being even gets to see it.
- Even if a human being gets to review my resume, if they see that I require sponsorship, they will not even give me a chance, in spite of my work experience and qualifications.

Be honest. Why?
- When the time comes for me to receive a job offer, I might be asked to show proof of work authorization. When the employer sees that I am on OPT, they will put two and two together. They might wonder why I was deceptive in the first place when asked if I would require sponsorship
- If I am hired despite my need for sponsorship, it will save me headache when the time comes for me to ask if the company is willing to put in an H1 petition so that I can continue to work at the company.

All those who are going through this process or have gone through it and somehow managed to get a job, please weigh in with advice and share your experiences!
Thenx
I understand with you and i was once in your position. Mine was a bit better because i am in one of the STEM fields. You should definitely say you don't require sponsorship(which you don't for now since you have OPT) and let the company make you an offer first. I had several offers with companies that don't sponsor H1 but they considered me for sponsorship after talking to their lawyers/HR. Bringing up sponsorship issues during recruitment will definitely reduce your chances of getting hired. Some interviewers however insist that you provide your work status and you should always say EAD. How ever if they want you to be specific, then you can say EAD OPT. Give me your contact and i will be in touch to discuss further.

Pls what's ur advice to a married man intending to skool in d US with a view to moving wife n Kid later? Is it worth it?
abbey621 is right you need to be able to cover your expenses. Except in some rare cases(applies to masters in STEM i.e science, technology, engineering and math) where you could get a scholarship which is only possible if you have very high test scores with a very high GPA

You can use your Nigerian driver's license but it depends on your state. All you need to get a state ID is your 1-20,passport&visa with a letter of verification form your school(sure of only Texas). You might want to verify with your DPS on that.

NB-and for we ladies(even guyz) that like to shop, :-) I will recommend Ross/TJMaxx/Marshalls

I was a student too for awhile and i agree with you guys on all the various ways to save as a student. Getting an SSN should be a priority for every student while in sch. even if you are going to get it through a temp job i highly recommend it. One thing i noticed from my Asian friends is that while in sch they try not to live extravagantly and save a lot.

They also help each other by having tutorial sessions for new students and organizing weekly grocery trips for students who don't have cars. In addition, the connect after graduation and network to recommend each other for jobs.

I have noticed that Nigerians/Africans don't do that because they feel that no one helped them when they were new students and i understand with any one that feel the same way too because i went through without much help However, i helped new students who where unfamiliar with the environment as much as i could and i encourage others to do the same regardless.
