A state High Court sitting in Asaba, Delta State has sentenced two herdsmen – Hassan Abidu and Yakubu Salem – to 20 years in jail with hard labour. The duo are believed to be members of a group of armed nomads terrorising indigenes of Ibusa and its environs in Oshimili North Local Council of the state. The trial judge (name withheld) yesterday found the two nomads guilty on a two-count charge of unlawful possession of firearms preferred against them by the state Attorney-General, punishable under Section 3 (1) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provision) Act Cap R.II, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2010. The pair were each sentenced to 10 years imprisonment without an option of fine. According to the prosecution, on or about February 23 last year and at about 0600 hours, the Ibusa Police Division received a distress call that a group of suspected herdsmen numbering about six were sighted around the Power Line area of the town armed with dangerous weapons, including firearms. He said a team of anti-robbery personnel, on a tip-off, arrested Abidu and Salem and found on them of two unlicensed single barrel guns, which they claimed were for hunting. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have embacked on a peaceful protest in front of the Anti-Corruption Summit in London, which has Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari in attendance. They are protesting for illegal incarceration of their leader Nnamdi Kanu, and also for Biafran 'freedon'. However the Islamic groupt - Shiites are also protesting for release of their leader, Sheik Zakzaky, whose whereabout is unknown after many months of being taken by Nigerians soldiers, after a clash with shia group that resulted in loss of hundreds of lives on the shia side. Other groups like the Tamil of Sri Lanka could also be seen holding placards demanding the whereabout of Tamil children. Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu addressing meat-Sellers at Abattoir in Ogbohill Aba over the killing of one of them by a solider. He pleads for calmness, and vows to compensate families of those who lost their loved ones in the clash. Meanwhile, the Chief Press Secretary has revealed that the 'killer' soldier has been arrested and would soon be prosecuted for murder. He said - "The solider who allegedly perpetrated this act has been arrested and taken into custody. He will surely face the full weight of the law. This was contained in a press statement by a press statement, made by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor of Abia State, following the bloody clash between Igbos and Hausa In Aba, commercial nerve center of Abia State. It partly reads, "He(Governor) has also directed the men of the Abia State Vigilante Services (AVS) to commence, with immediate effect, a two week intensive training, for onward deployment to our communities to assist in community policing under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police "All Traditional Rulers in the state have been directed to submit names of 10 able-bodied youths from their community to the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs from Tuesday 10th to Wednesday 11th May 2016. These youths will be enlisted into the Abia State Vigilante Services (AVS) to further boost community policing in the state. Abia State government has also given clear instructions to all security agencies to search all trucks coming into the state. "Law enforcement agencies have been mandated to search and monitor all trucks and vehicles conveying livestocks, food items and persons into the state from any part of the country with a view to preventing inter-state movement of arms and terrorists. The law enforcement agencies will also search and monitor markets and settlements where livestocks and dealers are located, to ensure security.
