Politics / Hate Speech: APC Led-government Targets Bill On Perceived Opponents- Says PDP by Gistdeal: 8:13pm On Nov 13, 2019
PDP has condemed the Hate Speech bill being proposed by members of the 9th Senate. In a statement released by its spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party says the law is targeted at those perceived to be opponents of the APC-led government.

The Senate is proposing a death sentence for anyone found guilty of hate speech.

According to PDP, the Hate Speech law can only find space in Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, Idi Amin’s Uganda and not in this era or in a democratic state such as Nigeria. The party challenged the proponents of the bill to start by condemning and setting penalties for those behind the ‘body bag’ comments as well as the ‘baboon and the dog blood’ narrative, which led to bloody unrest and the death of many innocent Nigerians.

Read the party’s statement below

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) condemns, in it entirety, the savage, repressive, cruel and murderous intents of the hate speech ‘prohibition’ bill, which seeks stringent punishment, including death by hanging as penalty.

In as much as the PDP does not condone hate speech under any guise, our party rejects the bill as unconstitutional, undemocratic and a barbarous design targeted at official extermination of voice of dissent and perceived opponents of the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government.

The PDP notes that the nation already has enough constitutional provisions and extant laws to safeguard a sane and healthy public expression space and cannot allow such cruel law devised to victimize and persecute the citizens, ostensibly as a regime protection measure.

Such laws can only find space in Hitler’s Germany, Mussolini’s Italy, Idi Amin’s Uganda and not in this era or in a democratic state such as Nigeria.

The resurfacing of the cruel bill in the Senate, after Nigerians vehemently rejected it last year, only points to the incurable desperation of the APC Federal Government to suppress and crush the will of the citizens at all cost.

The party pointed out that the provisions of the bill are deliberately hazy and nebulous with the malicious intention to victimize innocent Nigerians.

Such obnoxious laws are characteristics of known anti-democratic regimes, as prelude to their suspension or abolition of constitutional provisions to set the stage for totalitarianism.

Our party holds that, if allowed to pass, the hate speech ‘prohibition’ bill, with its savage provisions, would destroy our democratic order, strip our constitutional provisions, the rights of citizens and usher in a full-blown despotism in Nigeria.

The PDP challenges the proponents of the bill to start by condemning and setting penalties for those behind the ‘body bag’ comments as well as the ‘baboon and the dog blood’ narrative, which led to bloody unrest and the death of many innocent Nigerians.

Our party therefore cautions the APC and its Federal Government to retrace their steps and withdraw the noxious bill.

The PDP also charges the National Assembly to protect our nation by throwing away the bill and, if anything, use its legislative instruments to strengthen our institutions and authorities vested with regulation of public expression in line with the provisions of the 1999 constitution (as amended).

Business / Opay Acquires CBN Approval For International Money Transfer by Gistdeal: 10:20am On Nov 10, 2019
OPay a provider of payment, ride-hailing, food delivery and loan services have been given approval by Nigeria’s Apex Bank Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to commence international money transfer in Nigeria. With the approval, OPay will start facilitating remittance B2B, B2P and P2P remittance services into Nigeria. This is coming off the heels of the earlier announced $50 million fundraised from major venture capitalist some months ago.

“The plan is to distort the remittance space and ensure that international money transfer into Nigeria is safer, faster and more affordable” according to Kunle Olamuyiwa, Director of Remittances Services at OPay. With OPay’s infrastructure in Nigeria, it will be easier and faster for global remittance companies to partner with OPay to help their customers to receive money from their business partners, customers and loved ones directly into their OPay wallet and any bank account or mobile wallet in Nigeria. Also, recipients can go cash out their funds from their OPay wallets at any of over 100,000 OPay mobile money agents in Nigeria.

“We are already working with major global remittance companies around the world and will start facilitating remittances to Nigeria with these partners, ensuring the best fees and exchange rates, speed and security,” said Kunle.

When asked how this will benefit the recipients of money transfers in Nigeria, Kunle said “ There is a plan to commence a big-bang promo in December with lots of prices for recipients of money transfer who receive their money directly into their OPay wallets. I can only advise everyone who has families around the world to get an OPay Wallet. They will get better value for these funds doing transfers to any bank, paying their bills, buying food and also using our on-demand transport services i.e. Oride, OBus and Otrike. And on top of all, they can channel unused funds to OWealth and earn interest on it daily. It is indeed better times for recipients of international money transfers in Nigeria”

OPay launched its mobile payment service in August 2018, creating an infrastructure on which the company is now also adding new services. The agent-centric mobile payment operation focused on reaching the massive unbanked population of Nigeria. Currently, OPay has expanded into other verticals like ride-hailing (ORide and OTrike), and online food delivery (OFood), as well as facilitating access to third-party provided microloans (OKash) and wealth management (OWealth) and there will be more to come in the coming months.

Celebrities / Did You Know That Airplanes Are Banned From Flying Over Lionel Messi’s House? by Gistdeal: 6:15am On Nov 09, 2019
Many people are unaware that planes are forbiden from flying over the area Barcelona captain, Lionel Messi’s house is located and a new report has explained why.

Back in March 2018, Spanish airline, Vueling entered into an unplanned altercation with Football star Lionel Messi’s fans when the airline’s president Javier Sánchez-Prieto said in an interview that planes weren’t allowed to fly over Messi’s House in EL Prat Barcelona, and because of that, El Prat’s airport wouldn’t develop or expand.

Sánchez-Prieto was busy explaining why a plan to expand to Barcelona’s El Prat airport was being held up and casually remarked; “You cannot pass over where Messi lives.””This doesn’t happen anywhere else in the world.”

The comments generated a lot of negative reaction on social media against the airline and the airline was forced to issue an apology to the footballer and anyone that might have been hurt by their president’s remarks.

People on social media started questioning why Lionel Messi’s mansion, located in El Prat, Barcelona was a no fly zone, and after a year and seven months, AS magazine has published a report explaining why airlines don’t fly over Messi’s house.

According to AS, Barcelona’s airport is under environmental restrictions, and planes entering from El Prat into the Barcelona stadium have to take a different turn-around route to protect endangered fauna and flora species.

According to Spanish daily, AS;

‘As might have been expected, the answer was rather more straightforward than Messi instructing El Prat not to interrupt his siesta.’

‘ The Barcelona captain lives in the municipality of Gavà, about 25km outside of Barcelona and inside the Parque Natural del Garraf, an area protected under Spanish environmental legislation and that contains endangered flora and fauna.’

‘Therefore, planes arriving at and leaving El Prat have to make a small detour out into the Mediterranean to bypass the area, which also answers that question for anybody who has flown to Barcelona and wondered why that 180º turn is necessary.’

Sports / African Players Don’t Get The Recognition They Deserve At The Top Level – Eto'o by Gistdeal: 9:10pm On Nov 08, 2019
Cameroonian football legend, Samuel Eto’o has said that African players still do not get the recognition they deserve at the top level.

In an interview with AFP, the former Inter Milan and Barcelona striker said: “Western media dominate our media in Africa, so they definitely have an influence. People prefer to see a Lionel Messi goal,” Eto’o, 38, told AFP during a visit to Paris last month.

The former Barcelona star, once a teammate of Messi, believes that “African players are not respected” and are “not always properly appreciated”.

While George Weah, the former Paris Saint-Germain and AC Milan striker who is now the president of Liberia, remains the only African player ever to have claimed the Ballon d’Or award in 1995, Eto has no regrets he never won the prize.

“No, because I won so many trophies, I made so many dreams and for me that is the equivalent of winning the Ballon d’Or. However, I do feel for my younger brothers who came along after my generation.”

Eto’o also attacked captains and coaches of 54 African national teams who shunned Senegal’s Sadio Mane and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah in FIFA’s The Best award to vote for other candidates in September.

“Why is there this hate between us Africans? Why the misplaced jealousy? If we don’t appreciate one another, others are not going to do it for us,” Eto’o said.

“It’s a shame. If all Africans voted for other Africans, we would have had several awards for the best player.”

“Africa needs to show how strong it is. We are lucky to have these good players, who scored more than ten goals in the Champions League – we had the top three scorers in the English league (Mane, Salah, Aubameyang) but somehow these young guys don’t have our support,” Eto’o added.

“I want to accompany them as much as I can, defend them, protect them, because one day it will be their turn to pass on the torch.

“That is what we Africans have not always understood, at all levels, and that is why we are still trailing behind.”

Romance / Scientist Claims He Has Uncovered Why Women Have Clitoris by Gistdeal: 3:56pm On Nov 08, 2019
UK Scientist, Roy J. Levin of Sheffield University in his paper titled ‘The Clitoris – An Appraisal of its Reproductive Function During the Fertile Years: Why Was It, and Still Is, Overlooked in Accounts of Female Sexual Arousal’, claimed he has finally worked out why women have clitoris.

According to Levin, the clitoris serves an important reproductive function rather than purely being there to cause ecstatic sensations in women.
He further disclosed that the clitoris ‘activates the brain’ when stimulated to ’cause a combination of changes in the female reproductive tract that creates its readiness to receive and process sperm to achieve possible fertilisation of the egg’.

Some of the physical changes which includes vaginal blood flow, an increase in vaginal lubrication and an increase in vaginal oxygen reportedly brings the cervix away from the ‘semen pool’ and prevents sperm zooming into the uterus too rapidly, ‘thus allowing sperm time to become mobile and activated to fertilise the egg’. He described this as vaginal ‘tenting’ and ‘ballooning’.

‘The often repeated mantra, that the sole function of the clitoris is to induce sexual pleasure, is now obsolete,’ Levin said.

‘The concept changes a major sexual belief, and the physiological evidence is now obvious.

‘All these genital changes taken together are of major importance in facilitating the possibility of reproductive success (and thus gene propagation) no matter how or when the clitoris is stimulated—they reveal its overlooked reproductive function.

‘Of course, also commensurate with these changes, is its activation of sexual pleasure.

‘The clitoris thus has both procreative (reproductive) and recreative (pleasure) functions of equal importance. Clitoridectomy creates not only sexual disability but also a reproductive disability.’

Politics / Buhari’s Foreign Trips Are Not For Sightseeing- Presidential Spokesperson, Shehu by Gistdeal: 6:54am On Nov 05, 2019
Garba Shehu, Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Media and Publicity, says the different foreign trips embarked upon by the president are not ”sightseeing” but are very important for the development of the economy.

Garba said this in a recent interview with Channels TV.

Rubbishing claims made by members of the opposition that the foreign trips are unnecessary, Garba said the economy needs these trips made by President Buhari as foreign investors are willing to talk to him because they know he is a serious man.

“In each of the trips, we try to let Nigerians know what the things the president has achieved; and so, we are making progress, the economy needs the trips because much of it actually comes on account of who the president is. They (investors) are looking at a serious man and are ready to do business with him. I think Nigerians should comfort themselves in the fact that they have a president who is respected around the globe and the name of whom can fetch a lot of good things for Nigerians.” he said
President Buhari on Saturday November 2nd, left Saudi Arabia for the United Kingdom where he will be for two weeks.

I am thinking, it’s a resolution of all security agencies all over the world to put a stop to this menace! I then imagine, what shall it profit a man to buy laptop and press till day break only to end up in the hand of detectives in order to be jailed!?

Dear Youth, Yahoo Yahoo is not a profession, it’s a means to a destructive end! Be guided.

Politics / ”it’s Impossible To Stop Kidnapping In Nigeria”- Rivers State Governor, Nyesom by Gistdeal: 6:31am On Nov 05, 2019
Nyesom Wike, the Rivers State governor, says it is impossible to stop kidnapping in Nigeria as it has now become a business.

The governor made this remark when he spoke while receiving members of the Rotary International District 9141, who paid him a courtesy visit in his office in Port Harcourt, the state capital.

”It is now impossible to stop kidnapping in Nigeria. It (kidnapping) is now a business. It has been commercialised. It is now a major business. Everyone must partner with the government to ensure that we reduce it to the barest minimum. But it cannot be totally eradicated.

Look at what is happening across the country. Kidnapping has taken over all states. When it started here, it was politicised. But today, it is negatively affecting all states of the federation. A few days ago, a Court of Appeal judge was kidnapped in Benin. Before that, a Federal High Court judge was kidnapped. All of us must work together to stop this scourge,” he said.

Culture / Glo Has Helped Make Ofala Huge Tourism Spectacle - Obi Of Onitsha by Gistdeal: 2:34pm On Oct 14, 2019
Igwenwanyi Achebe, wife of Obi of Onitsha, presents the key to a brand new tricycle, also known as keke, to one of the lucky winners of the Globacom Ofala 2019 raffle draw, Mr. Mofunanya Onochie, on Saturday at the Onitsha Ime Obi, during the Azu Ofala festival, sponsored by Globacom.

The 2019 edition of the Onitsha Ofala Festival, sponsored by national telecommunications company, Globacom, was a grand celebration of culture and tradition at the Onitsha Ime Obi, the palace of the Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe.

The Onitsha monarch, who made a grand royal entry into the Ime Obi arena on Friday accompanied by his Ndi Ichies, and other palace functionaries, was a sight to behold as he danced to the royal traditional egwu ota drums, to the applause of the dignitaries, indigenes of Onitsha Kingdom and other tourists.

Welcoming his subjects and guests to the festival, Igwe Achebe paid tribute to Globacom for supporting the Ofala festival as the official corporate sponsors since 2011. He observed that the company had over the years introduced several innovations to the historic festival, thus making Ofala a huge tourism spectacle.

Attesting to Globacom’s contributions to the advancement of the festival, especially the company’s sole sponsorship of Oreze International Arts Exhibition, the Onitsha monarch noted that the company’s partnership had been very beneficial to the festival. The Arts Exhibition was introduced into the celebrations seven years ago and over 4,000 artists have so far exhibited their works at the forum.

“Our appreciation goes to our main sponsor, Globacom. The partnership with this company has contributed significantly to the growth of Ofala”, Igwe Achebe said. He expressed delight that the Nigerian Tourism Development Corporation had endorsed Ofala as a major festival in Nigeria, adding that the National Gallery of Arts had also provided support for the Oreze Arts Exhibition.

“To us, ndi Onicha, we are encouraged and energised by the knowledge that our kingdom is moving forward through our collective efforts”, he enthused.

Speaking with journalists at the Ime Obi, Globacom’s Regional Activation Manager, South East 2, Mr. Noel Udeme, said, “Globacom’s consistent sponsorship of the festival for the past nine years is an indication that we do not only love the Onitsha people, but that we are interested in the preservation of their cultural values”.

“Being a wholly Nigerian company, Globacom has contributed more to the promotion of the culture and values of the people of Nigeria, more than any other corporate organisation. We are not relenting in our efforts at promoting what makes us who we are as a people. Our culture is our life and that is the driving force behind the Glo Heritage Series, the platform we are using to support Ofala festival and other major festivals across the country”, he added.

The Ofala festival continued on Saturday with the Azu Ofala, and will be rounded off on Monday with a Royal Banquet organised by Globacom in honour of Igwe Achebe at the Dolly Hills Hotels, Onitsha.

Politics / I Was A Billionaire At 25 – Ebonyi State Governor by Gistdeal: 7:02am On Oct 14, 2019
According to Engr. David Umahi, he became a billionaire at that age due to hard work and commitment to duty, adding that he is a very rich person.

He went on to debunk several social media reports that he owns shops at the market and built his house within one year.

“I work very hard, I am not a poor person but a very, very rich person. You can’t use the state’s money and still do all these things (projects) we are doing, I don’t have any shop or any interest in the market,” he said.

The governor also said rescinding some of the decisions on the relocation of the traders from the market was due to the intervention of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN).

He also announced that the Abakpa market would now be designated and called Ebonyi Fruits and Vegetable Market.

“We presently have a special assistant on the market, the structures that are still strong are going to be renovated,” he said.

“The traders have two options: it is either you renovate it to our taste and become landlords or we do it on our own and you are no longer the landlord.”

Umahi also announced that due to the intervention of CAN, the government had changed the date of the trader’s relocation to the state’s international market to January 10, 2020 instead of original October 15, 2019.

He also ordered that some of the shops that were hitherto sealed in the market and re-opened be re-sealed as a result of the owners’ reluctance to withdraw their lawsuits against the government.

“The same applies to the such traders at the building materials market as we will enter into appearance with those who took us to court,” he added.
