An AK-47 was confiscated in the German town of Essen as a German citizen with Russian heritage celebrated Russia’s round-of-16 defeat of Spain at the 2018 World Cup, local police have confirmed to ESPN FC.

The 39-year-old is now facing charges for violation of the Kriegswaffenkontrollgesetz, the War Weapons Control Act, an offence punishable with a prison term of up to five years under German law.

After Russia advanced to the quarterfinals of their home World Cup with a penalty-shootout defeat of Spain, eye witnesses in Essen had reported a white Mercedes driving on one of the main streets of Germany’s ninth-largest city.

The witnesses reported an unknown man not only displaying a Russia flag but also a rifle. When police stopped the car minutes later, an officer “spotted the evidently real machine gun and under threat of their weapon asked the occupants to show their hands.”

An Essen police spokesperson told ESPN FC that a German citizen with a Russian background and four other friends and family members were inside the car, including an 11-year-old child.

Police confiscated the weapon, an AK-47 that was rendered disarmed due to a missing firing pin, and searched the occupants of the car. They then allowed them to leave the scene. According to an official press release, the man claimed that he wanted to celebrate Russia’s qualification for the quarterfinals of the World Cup.

Olukemi Agunloye, released wife of the Alauga of Akoko in Akoko Northeast Local Government Area of Ondo State, Oba Samuel Kehinde Agunloye, who was kidnapped by suspected gunmen, has disclosed what she passed through in the hands of kidnappers.

The monarch’s wife and the driver were kidnapped on Sunday morning between Auga and Ise Akoko on her way to Ugbe-Akoko in the same local government.

Olukemi, who was received by her husband and family members at the palace, said, “I was forced to drink water meant for cows as there was nowhere to drink good water in the bush where they kept us”.

The monarch’s wife said she had to embark on fasting for the four days she was in kidnappers’ den because there was no food suitable for human consumption in the bush.

The Olori added that she was made to trek many kilometres bare footed in the bush.

Confirming their release, Oba Agunloye in a statement said that his wife and the driver were released after ‘series of negotiation’ with the abductors.

“It is true that Olori has been released and she was freed yesterday [Wednesday] night around past 9pm. We were contacted by the kidnappers after series of negotiation with them and they told us that they have freed my wife and the driver,” he had said.

Justice P. I Ajoku of the Federal High Court, sitting in Benin City, Edo State on Monday June 25 , 2018 convicted Micheal Agun, Vicent Odia and Chibuike Ogbonna for offences bordering on obtaining by fraudulent trick.

The trio who were prosecuted by the Benin Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, were said to have obtained the sum of Four Hundred and Ninety Thousand Naira only (N490,000.00) from one John Francis by fraudulent tricks.

The offence is contrary to Section 421 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, C39, 2004 and punishable under Sec 510 of the same Act. Upon their arraignment on a one count charge, the defendants pleaded guilty to the offence.

In view of their plea, the prosecution counsel, Larry Aso Peters, urged the court to convict and sentence the defendants accordingly. In his response, defence counsel, Chris Otasome pleaded with the court to tamper justice with mercies as the defendants were first time offender who have become remorseful since they were arrested.

Justice Ajoku after listening to both counsels sentenced the defendant to three month imprisonment. They are also to restitute their victim of the entire sum of N490,000.

In the same vein, the Benin office of the Commission also secured the conviction of Smart Igbinedion on a One count charge bordering on obtaining by fraudulent trick. The convict was said to have fraudulently converted the sum of N200,000 belonging to Ekeo Youth Organisations to his own. Upon arraignment, the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge. His counsel pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercies. Justice Ajoku sentenced the defendant to to six months.

Justice Ajoku also convicted and sentenced one Isede Nurudeen to one month imprisonment for offences bordering on obtaining by fraudulent trick. The convict was said to have fraudulently obtained the sum of N60,000 from one Miss Iyakoregha Karenane Ebi, an offence punishable under Section 421 of the Criminal Code Act CAP C39 laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. The convict was also ordered to restitute his victim.
