After the meeting, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Taiwo Adisa also confirmed that the National President and his team made the governor agree that maintenance of peace and security is non-negotiable in the state. The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) on Wednesday appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the Polytechnic Act (Amendment) Bill to address many challenges confronting the sector. Its National President, Mr Usman Dutse, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the union was waiting for the President’s assent to the bill.

Dutse said all observations cited by the president during the Eight Assembly had been rectified, corrected and transmitted. According to him, the bill had passed through all legislative processes and all observations made by the President initially, had been addressed. “We are looking forward to his assent on the bill to improve the polytechnic sector in the country as he assumes office for the second term.

“We are waiting, and we are appealing that Mr President should sign the bill into law, because it will help in moving the sector forward. “The bill when signed into law will address all the bureaucracies in the sector, minimise internal rumblings and problems as well as industrial harmony in the sector,” Dutse said. The ASUP president recalled that similar attempts were made in the past on the bill, but the president withheld his assent.

“We have made similar attempts during the sixth and seventh assembly, which did not see the light of the day because of some delays. “We are hoping that this bill will be signed because, in the first instance, the bill was sent, but the president withheld his assent due to some observations. “However, those observations have been amended and the Bill returned to him. “We believe that now, there should be no other observation; we hope that the president will assent to the bill,” he said. Dutse added that the new Act would improve productivity and best practices in Polytechnics and Monotechnics across the country.

Bashir Abubakar, the Assistant Controller General incharge of Zone “B”, Nigeria Customs Service, on Thursday pledged to work with key stakeholders to suppress smuggling within the zone. Abubakar, who met with journalists shortly after assuming duty in Kaduna, said the effort was to ensure synergy in the task of policing the country’s borders.

He noted that in the course of enforcement activities, the customs service was bound to work with other security agencies and various stakeholders to prevent smuggling and safeguard the nation’s borders. He charged all customs personnel in the zone to respond efficiently to all challenges and bring their experiences to bear in the discharge of their responsibilities.

Abubakar noted that part of the issues was the security challenges bedevilling the country especially the Northern region and said the service also has a big role in blocking the smuggling of weapons into Nigeria. He also called on the personnel to regard their posting to the zone as a call to national service, which they must carry out within the confines of the law. Abubakar assured that the command would continue to sentitize the general public on the rules and regulations governing importation and exportation of goods to and from the country.

“Some people go into importation without following due process, we have understood that there are so many items being imported, which didn’t fall into the prohibited items, but those importing them didn’t follow due process,” he said. According to him, such importers need to be sensitised to follow due process and not run foul of the law due to ignorance.

“The command is going to run a robust public enlightenment campaign for all stakeholders,” the zone’s coordinator said, and urged the media to key into the program to assist in the suppression of smugling in the country. According to him, the core duty of the NCS apart from containing smuggling is the issue of revenue generation, which he said the zone would exceed the target set for it at the end of the year.

Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Thursday donated relief materials to Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Anka Emirate, Anka Local Government Area of Zamfara.   The donation was presented to the Emir of Anka, Alhaji Attahiru Ahmad by CAN’s National President, Dr Samson Ayokunle.

Ayokunle, who was represented by the state’s Chairman of the association, Rev. In his remarks, the Emir of Anka, who also Chairman of the State Council of Chiefs, lauded the association for the visit and assistance given to the IDPs.   The emir described the visit as a plus for unity, peace, and stability as well as religious tolerance.   “Our happiness today is not limited to only the assistance you brought to IDPs, but to the visit itself, which indicates the concern you have for our people.

BMO said this in a statement signed by its Chairman, Mr Niyi Akinsiju and Secretary Mr Cassidy Madueke on Thursday in Abuja. It said with the emergence of the duo the 9th National Assembly is certain to be different from the previous one.

BMO said it was obvious from the manner the caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the two chambers worked in the interest of the party to elect their choice candidates as presiding officers of the federal legislature. The group said that anything contrary to APC’s position on the leadership of the National Assembly would have meant a repeat of the animosity that trailed Executive-Legislature relations between 2015 and 2019.

“We all saw how the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) used moles in the APC to dilute the mandate freely given to the governing party in 2015 and consequently hampered the Buhari administration,” it said. According to the group, this culminated in the President tagging former Senate President Bukola Saraki and his co-traveler Yakubu Dogara as unpatriotic individuals, in his assessment of the 8th National Assembly.

The group noted that Nigerians would have most likely witnessed a similar scenario if the PDP backed candidates for the leadership of the legislature had clinched the Senate Presidency and the Speaker’s seat. “But it was refreshing to see that even some of their members in the Senate voted against the party’s position,” it said. BMO noted that this is the first time, since 1999, that the PDP would not be in the power loop at the centre and this, in our view, bodes well for the country.

It, however, congratulated the newly elected National Assembly leadership on its emergence, and the APC for ensuring a clean sweep of all the positions set aside for the party with the majority of seats. The group also congratulated the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and his colleagues in the National Working Committee (NWC) as well as state governors elected on the party’s platform.

According to BMO, that those considered as true representatives of the people opted for Lawan and Gbajabiamila ahead of the PDP-backed candidates in the two chambers is commendable. “We see it as a victory for Buhari and make bold to say that Nigerians should expect a seamless delivery of APC’s ‘Next Level’ campaign promises,” it said. BMO said that these would come in terms of swift passage of bills that would impact positively on the lives of the average Nigerian.
