Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy says he’s learning how to speak Pidgin English as fluently as the Nigerian players in his team. Wilfred Ndidi, Kelechi Iheanacho, and Ahmed Musa are the Nigerian players in Leicester City. Vardy told TheCable that his only challenge with the Nigerian trio is their Pidgin English which he says is difficult to understand. “The Nigerian players keep talking- pidgin English you call it, right? It’s hard to understand. But I am trying to learn it and speak it like they do. They are great players." The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Kayode Fayemi, has accused security operatives of aiding and abetting illegal mining activities in Plateau State. Fayemi made the accusation while addressing security operatives in Kampani Zurak village in Bashar chiefdom of the state where 20 illegal miners, including eight Chinese citizens, were arrested on Monday on the order of the National Security Adviser, Ali Monguno. “It is sad that security operatives are giving them (illegal miners) security cover. If not, why do people guard this site?” the minister said. Fayemi described the illegal miners as economic saboteurs. “These miners are illegal. Government did not give them permission to do this, they are economic saboteurs. This cannot happen anywhere else in the world and we will not allow it anywhere in Nigeria. We do not want these miners,” a fuming Mr. Fayemi told the security agents. The state governor, Simon Lalong, said government would sanction any traditional ruler found to have connived with the miners to exploit the community. Lalong also threatened to transfer the divisional police officer in charge of Wase LGA for allowing the illegal miners excavate the land. Lalong, who was visibly furious over the activities of the miners, alleged that the miners excavate minerals from the site worth N5 billion monthly. In 2014, this community lost over 10 people due to contaminated water following activities of the illegal miners. It was gathered that the host community of the two mining sites do not have roads, schools, healthy facilities, potable water or mobile telecommunications network. One of the freed pupils of the Lagos State Model College, Igbonla, Epe, Ramon Isiaq, has said his stay in the kidnappers’ hideout is an experience he would never forget in a hurry. The 16-year-old Senior Secondary School 2 pupil said the abductors exposed him and his colleagues – Peter Jonah, Adebayo George, Judah Agbausi, Pelumi Philips and Farouq Yusuf – to rains in the camp they were kept. He said they were fed with poorly cooked food and that they were only allowed to bathe once in a week. The children were dropped at a creek in Ondo State around 12 pm on Friday after spending 64 days in captivity. They were reunited with their parents in Lagos later. Their release came on the heels of fresh N5m ransom collected by the kidnappers on Tuesday at Odi-Omi community in Ogun State. Isiaq in a brief chat with one of our correspondents on the telephone on Saturday said there were times they went hungry all day. He said, “After they kidnapped us that day (May 25), we were kept around our school, while a (police) helicopter was patrolling the area. They asked us to hide in a bush so that people in the helicopter would not see us. In the midnight, they sent a boat to pick us. “The following day, they gave us spaghetti. We ate the same thing in the afternoon and evening. They told us that some security men were sent to fight them, but they killed the men. They threatened that we would die there. “We were seven in an uncompleted building. The seventh person is a man that was looking after us. It was a bad experience. We didn’t enjoy our sleep. We always prayed that rain would not fall. If rain fell, it would beat us. Sometimes, they didn’t give us food; at times they gave us food once in a day. At other times, they wouldn’t give us food at all. We ate together. We bathed once or twice in a week.” At a point, Isiaq stated that he and the other pupils complained about their maltreatment to the leader of the kidnap gang. “After some time, I met with their boss called ‘Chief’ or ‘Chairman’ that we did not enjoy the food they cooked for us and that we should be allowed to prepare our food by ourselves. They didn’t allow us to move around…” the Lagos pupil stated as his father stopped the conversation. The father promised SUNDAY PUNCH that Isiaq would speak more with one of correspondents about his experience later in the day. However, subsequent calls made to the father’s telephone line were not picked. Also, parents of the other pupils rescued from the kidnappers did not allow SUNDAY PUNCH to speak with the freed kids. They also declined to share any experience the kids narrated to them with one of our correspondents. After some persuasion, one of the parents who preferred to speak on condition of anonymity told SUNDAY PUNCH that her son took ill while held hostage by the kidnappers. “We have been told not to ask them any question, except they decide to talk about their experience. So, I wouldn’t want to expose him to any danger. But so far, he told me they were moved from one camp to another and that they were cooking by themselves at a point. He also fell sick while in captivity. While the school was in second term, he was ill and was recuperating when the abduction happened. I think the kind of environment he was exposed to by those guys made him to fall sick again. He is relaxed now. “He said one of the camps was built with straw and that the kidnappers mounted a tarpaulin to cover them when the rain was much. They allowed them to move around and did not maltreat them. One of them, (Isiaq) who can swim had started teaching them how to do so. My son told me they were wearing black clothes before they gave them the jerseys they wore yesterday (Friday). The jerseys had been collected for laboratory examination,” she said. Meanwhile, a security source has denied that extra N5m was paid before the pupils were freed. A top security officer who spoke on condition of anonymity told SUNDAY PUNCH that it was the extra efforts Source: http://www.wobegist.com/2017/07/we-bathed-once-week-ate-once-day-slept.html cc; lalasticlala, Mynd44

Driver, Sunday Lawal, 33, who allegedly obtained three bottles of Hennessy and food valued at N75,000 from a bar attendant under false pretences, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court. The accused, who resides at Bola Ajibola Street, Ikeja, Lagos is standing trial on a two-count of obtaining under false pretences and breach of peace. He pleaded not guilty. The prosecutor, Insp. Raji Akeem, told the court that the accused committed the offences on July 9, at Royal Club, Oba Akran, Ikeja. He said that the accused fraudulently obtained three bottles of Hennessy and food for himself and his friends at the club on the pretext that payment would be made after eating and drinking. Akeem said that the complainant, Oluwaseyi Joseph, claimed that when he approached the accused and his friends to pay after eating, they started making flimsy excuses. The prosecutor said that the accused claimed that there was a problem with his ATM card and he did not have enough money to pay for the drinks and food he bought. He said that Joseph immediately notified his manager that the accused and his friends had refused to pay their bill after eating. Akeem said the manager immediately notified the police, who arrested Lawal and took him to the station for further questioning. The offences contravene sections 166 and 314 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. Section 314 prescribes a 15-year jail term for obtaining under false pretences. The Magistrate, Mr T.O Shomade, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum. Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has approved the release of additional N1billion to local government councils in the State to offset part of the outstanding salary arrears owed their staff. This brings to N2billion the total amount of money the State government has released to the local government councils out of the N5.1billion it recently received as its share of the Paris Club refund from the Federal Government. The Governor had also earlier approved the release of N312m to state-owned-tertiary institutions for the payment of salary arrears. Governor Ahmed gave the approval on Monday at a meeting with officials of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT) and Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NUP) in the State. This is as the governor also assured tertiary institutions in the State that the issue of delayed subvention will become a thing of the past. The governor stated that the earlier N1b released to the councils should go towards payment of LG workers and pensioners, while the additional N1b should be used to pay staff of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB). Alhaji Ahmed further noted that the decision to release additional N1billion to the councils was based on an understanding with the State House of Assembly during a meeting held earlier in the day as the Paris Club refund receipts were state funds captured in the 2017 budget. The governor added that the decision was also based on the understanding with State Legislators that some of the projects budgeted for implementation in this fiscal year, such as the renovation of the indoor Sports Hall of the Kwara State Stadium, payment of counterpart funding for the construction of classrooms at the primary school level and other payments to State’s pensioners and workers will be suspended in favour of the Local government and SUBEB workers. Governor Ahmed, however, emphasized that any further inflow to the State government under the Paris Club refund would be used to take care of salaries, pensions and projects that have now been stepped down. Responding on behalf of his colleagues who were at the meeting, the State NLC Chairman, Comrade Yekeen Agunbiade said the labour leaders are grateful to the governor for acceding to their request by approving additional fundS to the local councils as this will bring relief to workers and pensioners. Similarly, the heads of tertiary institutions in the State, earlier today called to commend Governor Ahmed for approving the release of N312, 191, 101.71 to the institutions to offset salary arrears of their workers. They, however, appealed to the governor to hasten the release of the fourth quarter subvention to the institutions. A security source has revealed that the prospects of oil exploration in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria in Borno state has suffered a major setback as Boko Haram have on Wednesday reportedly ambushed and attack a team of workers between Magumeri and Gubio on their way back to Maiduguri. According to The Nation, the source informed that the workers were ambushed around Borno Yeso area of Magumeri, adding that “security personal providing protection and security to the workers including geologists from the University of Maiduguri were also badly affected in the ambushed. Another source speculated that out of the ten vehicles that conveyed the oil workers including security, only one ten seater bus returned to Maiduguri with five wounded people hospitalized at the State Specialist Hospital Maiduguri. The source added that many have been feared dead or taken alive as no contact has so far been made by some of the members of the team during the attack There is no official statement from the military command in Borno State and the State Police Command on the attack. A credible military source also informed our correspondent that some students of the Geology Department of the University, members of the Civilian Joint Task Force and other security personnel were victims of the attack The Military source regretted that a conspiracy by head of the securities in trying to shield the information from the public. His words: “As at 9:00 today Wednesday, no rescue plan has been put in place as far as I am aware from either the Nigeria Airforce component from the Theatre. “Between Wednesday and today, only ten of the victims can be confirmed to be alive. The five oil workers that escaped the attack Wednesday were hospitalized at the Borno State Specialist Hospital. “Also this morning around 5:00 precisely five others who escaped also called and told us their location. “The five victims at the state specialist told us that out of the ten vehicles conveying the team from magumeri, only their vehicle escaped the attack with bullets shots, flat tyres and smashed wind screen. “They said the insurgents had chased them for more than ten kilometers adding that most of the vehicle and the persons involved did not make it out of Magumeri,” the source disclosed. The Nation recalls that President Buhari last year issued directives to the NNPC to resume the exploration of oil in the Lake Chad Basin and River Kolnami. In compliance with the Presidential Directives, the GMD of NNPC sent a delegation to Borno State in May this year who paid courtesies on Gov. Kashim Shettima and the Shehu of Borno, Alhaji Abubakar El-Kanemi with the assurance that the exploration will begin in six weeks’ time as peace was gradually returning to the state. The latest attack has however cast a dark shadow on the prospect of the continuation of the exploration with renewed Boko Haram attacks and the increasing insecurity in the Lake Chad. According to a report by SDE, the worshippers at an evangelical church in Luandeti, Kakamega County were last Sunday treated to a free-for-all drama. This is after, Hilda Lwakane, an abandoned wife confronted her estranged husband, Patrick Lumbasi, who is a pastor, with his new wife, who happens to be an ex-wife to his son, in the house of God. The fact that her ex-husband had the nerve to pay the church a visit (after staying away for over two years) and worship in the company of his new wife enraged Hilda Lwakane so much so that she attacked them minutes after they walked in. According to SDE, Patrick Lumbasi was an assistant pastor at the church, before eloping with his son’s wife - only identified as Milly. Two years ago, Lumbasi abandoned his wife with four children at his Luandeti home and moved to Turbo town in neighbouring Uasin Gishu County with his son’s wife. The woman already had a child with Lumbasi’s son. News had spread about the incestuous marriage months ago, with Lumbasi’s brothers and kin trying to prevail upon him to end it in vain. Perhaps out of curiosity of the state of his first family, Lumbasi returned to his home in the company of his new wife, but made a stop at the local church first to attend the service. But hardly had the couple settled in the church than Lumbasi’s first wife, who had spotted them walking in, pounced on them with slaps as she wailed, calling the other woman “a husband snatcher”. “I was overwhelmed by anger and couldn’t take it anymore. I had to attack them to teach them a lesson,” said Lwakane. Before she could explain herself, ushers at the church threw her out for causing a scene in church. A furious Lumbasi followed her out the church and asked her to pack her belongings and go back to her parents and leave behind the children to be taken care of by his new wife. “He asked me to leave his home because I have embarrassed him and his family,” she said. Vincent Musungu, the elder brother to Lumbasi revealed that the incestuous marriage has been the talk of town for a while, but their efforts to end it have been in vain. “I stay in Nairobi and when I got wind of the relationship. I summoned the two (Lumbasi and Milly) with the intention of convincing them out of the illicit affair. He unfortunately turned hostile and asked me to mind my own business,” said Musungu who is currently away from work on leave. The sad state of affairs disturbed Musungu who investigated further to know where they lived, hoping to have more talks with them so as to end the marriage. “My inquest led me to Turbo, where they live and operate a general shop called Pamilly, an acronym of Patrick and Milly. I raised the matter with their senior pastor back in Lwandeti but it appeared he couldn’t solve the problem. I even involved village elders but all was in vain,” said Musungu. By the time of filing this story, the abandoned wife had nowhere to go and was asking locals to defend her and help her by prevailing upon her husband to change his mind. “We don’t know what to do. This is taboo, only that they are yet to sire a child together but they live with that child whom we don’t know if he now calls Lumbasi grandpa or dad. That marriage has to end and the two get cleansed,” said Musungu, expressing his worry on what will happen to Lwakane, once he travels back to Nairobi. SDE could not reach Lumbasi’s son for comment. According to a report by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), a cholera outbreak in Kwara state has led to the death of 17 people. This was disclosed in the agency's weekly epidemiological report for Week 26 released on Tuesday, July 18, 2017. According to the report, 1,617 suspected cases of cholera were reported throughout the state with the 17 fatalities representing a 1.1% fatality rate. A majority of 818 (50.5%) suspected cases were reported from the Ilorin West LGA of the state, with the most endangered group being children aged between one to five years old with a total of 460 (28.4%) cases. Males also made up over half of the reported cases, accounting for 51.6%. The report advocated for people be more health conscious, focusing on "prevention of cholera through environmental hygiene practices." According to the report, "Instituting the habit of good environmental hygiene is a first step in preventing cholera outbreaks in a community or region, as the transmission cycle is not established at this point and an outbreak can be prevented." To observe proper hygiene, NCDC advised people to take proper care of residential areas, especially by disposing waste appropriately. "Environmental hygiene, in this context, focuses on care of residential areas, proper treatment and disposal of waste during an outbreak," the report said. The agency also said the fight for better hygiene should be a collaborative effort. "To achieve the maximal impact of any of the aforementioned practices, a communal approach is encouraged. This will support better fostering and impact on the general public on the importance of environmental hygiene practices, in and out of an outbreak season. "These preventive messages should constitute part of the messages given to the general public at the community, LGA, State and national levels before and during an outbreak," the agency's report noted. The police in Kwara State have arrested 11 suspected cult members who have been terrorising residents in Ilorin, the state capital. Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Lawan Ado, while briefing journalists on the arrest, said some of the suspects were involved in killing residents and robbing them of valuables. Ado said detectives from his command, making use of intelligence reports, arrested the suspects at their locations in areas close to campuses of tertiary institutions in the town. He explained that three of the suspects, who confessed to be members of the Aiye Confraternity, were arrested at Akpata Yakuba and that a locally made pistol was recovered from them. The police boss said four others, who also confessed to being members of the same group, said they had been terrorising students of the University of Ilorin and residents around the institution. The commissioner added that three more suspects were arrested at a flashpoint in Tanke area of the town and that they had confessed to be active members of the Aiye Confraternity. He further said the suspects had been responsible for various crimes, including homicide and robbery, which were currently being investigated by the police. CP Ado added that the command was on the trail of an ex-convict who led a robbery gang to operate in some parts of the town recently. “While the ex-convict escaped, three members of his gang were arrested with items, including one Honda Civic car, a compact laptop and two assorted Android phones,” the CP said. The police boss, while giving update on police investigation on the killing of a business woman identified as Alhaja Rashidat at Kulende area of the town, said an investigative team from the Force Headquarters in Abuja had been deployed to the state to assist in the investigation. He said while the command was still looking for the other suspects, those that had been arrested would soon be charged to court.
