Hey man, just to be clear—we’re not fighting. I’m a lifelong learner and always open to being corrected, so no hard feelings at all.

That said, I’ve got a question: let’s say I buy Oando stock, then sell everything and completely exit the position. Later on, if I decide to buy the stock again, does my average cost start fresh, or will it include the previous transactions from the past that I’ve already closed out? Please I want the house input on this,
My brother, we can’t fight at all. I be full blooded Edo boy too so no wayo at all. I also had those concerns and apparently what they had was an implementation where the cost inherited even closed positions, from my engage they took it down to actually refactor this behavior. So, yes your point is valid but as you can see some users actually needed it nonetheless but I guess an experienced investor is concerned about average cost for what’s live in their portfolio and not historicals.

I see they also recently released the ability to view the order book. There’s headroom for improvement but they’re solid.

No, it doesn’t.

I have said it a billion times here, avoid Bamboo. If you want, I can post the silly explanation they gave me on how they calculate your average cost. If bamboo users on here take out time to do the maths, they will realize that they've been played.
This is how you peddle cheap lies because you have ties to certain platforms. Trades that are executed on NGX with trade alerts sent by CSCS how is Bamboo playing you? The average cost computation is done based on the lifetime cost of any security in your portfolio. I found it very helpful and a lot of traders have even requested for it to be brought back (I attached screenshots I just pulled from Twitter)

How do you disparage a platform on a public forum based on false information? Bamboo today is the leading stock investment app (for local & foreign stocks) for retail investors in Nigeria, if you want to sleep well at night then I’d recommend you pick them. I’ve used the app for years trading US stocks and I’ve never had an issue.

ProgrammingRe: My Website Date Is Not Correct Why??? by gmart(m): 9:09am On May 30, 2016
@Op have you been able to resolve this?

Just incase someone else gets in the same situation, here is a possible solution:

After using the php function date_default_timezone_set() to set the time_zone accordingly, if you still notice a discrepancy in your date when compared to the time_zone you've set, the culprit is most likely your data store.

If you have a CRUD application that writes to the Database using the database native function to insert datetime e.g Using php to insert a record into a MySQL database: "INSERT INTO table_name (created_at) VALUES (NOW())" (NOW() used in that insert statement is not a php function but a MySQL native function simply instructing your database to INSERT the value of its current datetime into that field. If the timezones are different, that value will differ too). Another case is when you've set a default value of 'CURRENT_TIMESTAMP' for that field, you must understand that the date that will be inserted is not affected by the timezone you've set using the date_default_timezone_set() function in your script. The inserted date will be determined based on the current time on the database server. So if my DBase server resides in a US timezone and I create records using the above methods, you'll notice these discrepancies.

Solutions:

1. Generate the date from your php script after setting the environment timezone using the date_default_timezone_set() function and then hand it to your query to insert. e.g

date_default_timezone_set('Africa/Lagos'); //set choice timezone
$current_datetime = date('Y-m-d h:i:s'); //generate current datetime for the set timezone

Your insert statement should now read: "INSERT INTO table_name (created_at) VALUES ('$current_datetime')";

The time current time for 'Africa/Lagos' timezone should now be inserted with the records on your database.

2. This second solution is not recommended, the above is a perfect but if your are not really interested in the exact datetime value. i.e you're not outputting them in the format '30 May 2016' or '30-05-2016' and only just want to display the difference between when the record was created and now. Maybe to display an 'Ago' kind of time format e.g 3 mins ago, 2 hours ago or 2 years ago. You can find the timezone that matches the current datetime of your database server and set your php environment timezone to this value, so that when you read the date from the database and run the function for the date calculation the time difference between record creation time and now still matches irrespective. This is an unrecommended hack but worth mentioning because it works.

Thank you.

BusinessRe: My Startup Hotels.ng Just Raised $1.2m. Ask Me Anything by gmart(m): 10:25am On May 28, 2015
This is very unusual and I want to commend Mark Essen for availing us the opportunity to learn from his experience.

I have a few questions to ask as I'm currently working on a young startup that was launched this January:

What works as regards marketing and publicity? We have invested quite a lot on social media marketing but it seems it is not as effective as we had anticipated. Do you prefer adwords to facebook ads?

How long did it take you to reach your first 20,000 monthly unique visitors after launch?

Did you experience declining traffic at any point or was the growth always progressive? If you did, what measures did you take to remedy it?

When was the 'Ah ha' moment for you? That point you realised this has definitely got to be big now.

N.B: I have included the URL of the startup, not for publicity but just so you can better understand what we are doing and be able to advise more appropriately. ( http://www.unisells.com )

Anticipating your response.

Thanks.

I do not intend to push it further as you almost have more posts than myself on here. WebmastersRe: PAGA And GIGALAYER Hosting Trying To Rip Me Off?? by gmart(op):
rufaai:
If we are unable to trace your transaction, we are to follow up with Paga and not you. Contacting the gateway service provider is a wrong move
@rufaai, unfortunately contrary to what you have stated up there, after spending a lot on phone calls just to repeat myself and details to paga CS reps, they finally acknowledged the receipt of the payment and issued a refund today. I was only coming to inform the community here that this has been resolved when i saw your post bragging about how its your responsibility to deal with this and me going about it the wrong way, hence this lengthy post. It'll interest you to know that the only response i got from gigalayer throughout all this was that "they could not trace my payment". What if it was an international payment gateway? How would I have been able to liaise with them? As far as I'm concerned gigalayer failed in their role to serve as an intermediary between myself(user) and their payment gateway(paga).

rufaai:
login to your billing account at https://gigalayer.com/billing and hit the Get Support button on the menu then select Billing Support to open a ticket!
The very first step I took when this happened was to call you @rufaai, I relayed my complaint and you told me to open a ticket, I immediately did as instructed and if it helps here is the ticket number: #YP552. Nothing useful was said there, infact that ticket has been unattended to for more than 24hours, i had to close it just now after paga refunded me. So don't come on here preaching about opening a support ticket as if it is efficacious and would have made any difference.

rufaai:
Don't go on forums uttering very damaging words, it's very wrong!
Should I have sat down and allow the funds to just disappear because I'm dealing with a host who is nonchalant about the challenges of her clients? Did I not explore every other method of in-house resolutions? Did you guys tell me to wait that you were/will handle the issue? Coming on this platform to air my complaints isn't and will never be wrong considering the position you guys put me in, what i think it does is hurt. Yes! It hurts because now you finally have to take me serious and offer explanations. I didn't come here originally to wash undies but your post has gotten me infuriated and if you do not apologize I'm going to say too much on this thread that might leave you guys and your business very unhappy.

Thanks to the guys at PAGA they really impressed me when I finally got in touch.

Bless.
WebmastersPAGA And GIGALAYER Hosting Trying To Rip Me Off?? by gmart(op):
Hello guys,

I'm always very skeptical about Nigerian hosting platforms and payment gateways simply because of reliability. Yesterday I decided to give them the benefit of doubt and ordered a hosting plan for a client on gigalayer.com.

On getting to the checkout page, I was referred to paga and after entering my card details I got a response that the payment failed. I was taken aback a few minutes later when I got a notice from my bank that the exact amount has been deducted and its marked as payment to PAGA. I logged into my gigalayer account and found out the invoice for this purchase was still marked as unpaid so I called their CS and I was told to open a ticket which I did. The only response I've gotten for that ticket from gigalayer is that they are unable to trace my payment. So I decided to be proactive and I stepped up, I sent a mail to paga yesterday I still haven't gotten any response. I have been calling their CS line now and after burning my airtime on frivolities and jingles I have nothing to benefit from they keep saying hello, hello obviously they are unable to hear me. I have called more than 10 times and now they've resolved to stop taking my calls.

I hope someone who knows someone will read this and help attend to this issue because it is ulterly discouraging that as Nigerians we can't do business online effectively.
CareerRe: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by gmart(m): 6:25am On Feb 24, 2015
Hello people, I could not respond earlier to your comments because of my engagements.

Sandra4Christ:
thank you very much gmart for the advice....I graduated with a second upper. I really want to have an edge over my counterpart that's why I desire a short course in the course of my NYSC
@Sandra your class of degree gives you a bit of an edge already. You must understand that you do not have to outclass the entire chemical engineering graduates in the country to earn a career opportunity in the O&G sector smiley . If I were you, what I'll be bothered with at this stage is putting together a nice CV and rigorously applying for any available O&G job opening I can find. You should work to ensure that you're invited for at least 2 job test/interviews even before rounding up your service. Also take advantage of the service year to network with your colleagues and stay within the circle of information as this is also very important.

@jesuspikin77 I don't think your earlier post was rude, time constraint is why I couldn't respond earlier. The issue of age is quite a challenge that young graduates are now having to contend with. I have seen a number of intelligent and articulate fresh grads remain unemployed as a result of this. But then again my advice on this issue has always been; Rather than remain UNEMPLOYED, it is better to be UNDEREMPLOYED. This is because in underemployment you are at least afforded the opportunity of gaining experience which can in turn qualify you for an experienced position and consequently a better job placement. It is very rare coming across age restriction for experience hires, most HR apply the age thing when recruiting fresh graduates.

So, finish well (a first class will do you more good), look out for some small oil servicing firms if you intend to pursue a career in the O&G sector. There are tonnes of these firms but most Nigerians only know about the big players. The likes of ARKLEEN and Estymol Oil are not the kind of companies you hear of on a regular, yet they offer some of the best hands-on training to their employees. You will also find out that the possibility of the age restriction not applied or the benchmark adjusted to accommodate your age bracket is higher in these "low profile" firms than in more established companies like the Shells, Totals etc.

Don't be afraid to start small and if pushed further start from the very bottom, soon the experience you've gained will make you highly sort after.

Wish you guys the best.

I am a chemical engineer presently serving in port Harcourt...pls house I need advice on how to grow my career in the oil and gas industry I.e the short courses I need to do now while serving. I was want to know if going for nebosh IGC can be OK or going for nebosh oil/gas, which is more preferable.....thanks as I anticipate your kind response
I don't really think expensive safety trainings and certificates will do you much good at this stage. Considering your level of experience (fresh grad) you'll most likely be recruited into any O & G firm as a graduate trainee and what will open that door for you is your class of degree. What did you graduate with?

If you didn't do too well in your first degree, you should consider pursuing a master's degree immediately after NYSC to help compensate for that. But this is also dependent on other factors such as age.

For now, I'll say stay close to the career section of O&G companies websites, job/vacancies section on nairaland here too is also quite rich and apply to as many O&G openings for fresh graduate as you can find. Practice sample aptitude test questions and follow career blogs like jarushub.com etc.

Don't forget the God factor too while at this.

Wish you the best.
CareerRe: Chemical & Process Engineers Forum by gmart(m): 8:31am On Feb 22, 2015
The right question is: Why do you love chemical engineering? I'm asking this question because over the years i have seen students of chemistry, polymer science and other related courses cross over to chemical engineering only to be disappointed at the curriculum. First, you must understand that chemical engineering is not chemistry and also that Chem.E deals with more mathematics than most of the other engineering disciplines.

If after you've done a proper background study of the course and you still remain genuinely passionate about the profession then you'll most likely find something to do after graduation, considering chemical engineering is one of the most versatile fields of engineering.

What you should be bothered about at this stage is earning a good grade, at least a distinction at the end of your programme. This is what will really give you an edge and increase your chances of employability and not just the fact that your degree is foreign.

All the best

Imeisua:
Hi All,
I have read through the thread and its so interesting and enlightening.
I need advise/suggestions from the house. I am a Bsc Chemistry graduate from a Nigerian university, and I've been offered admission to study for Masters in Process Engineering in a Uk top research university.
I have always loved Chemical Engineering and would love to build a career in this field. What is the prospect of getting a job on graduation in Nigeria and even in UK?
