SportsArgentina Games Off After Vice President Assassination Attempt by Goalgist(op): 1:25pm On Sep 02, 2022
All football matches in Argentina were suspended on Friday after an assassination attempt on the country’s vice president, Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

The Argentinian Football Association (AFA) made the announcement on Thursday night after the attack, which took place in Buenos Aires.

Fernandez de Kirchner was arriving at her home in the Recoleta neighbourhood when a man emerged from a crowd and pointed a gun at her head from close range.

The pistol — which was loaded with five bullets — was triggered but did not fire correctly. A 35-year-old man has been arrested.

Friday Sept. 2 was declared a national holiday by president Alberto Fernandez and the AFA said that all footballing activity due to take place had been suspended.

The AFA said in a statement:

"The Argentinian Football Association expresses its strongest repudiation of what happened with vice president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner.

SportsVictor Ikpeba: Man United Players Are ‘lazy’ And Lack Character’ by Goalgist(op): 11:24am On Aug 17, 2022
Nigeria legend Victor Ikpeba has labelled Manchester United players as “lazy” after the team’s poor start to the new English Premier League campaign under new manager Erik ten Hag.

Man United suffered a 2-1 defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion at Old Trafford in the opener, and 4-0 humiliating defeat at Brentford in the second fixture.

Ikpeba, 49, who played 31 international matches and scored seven goals for Nigeria, told allnigeriasoccer:

"So Eric ten Hag, his work is cut out because it is a difficult job to take. He was warned not to take the job by former United coach [Louis] van Gaal. These [United] players are lazy. They don’t have the character. They don’t have that unity in the squad.

"So much problem with Ronaldo and Maguire, so much problem going on. They have to come back and play as a team.

"You know I have been bashed by the Manchester United fans last season. Don’t think Cristiano Ronaldo was a distraction at United.

"Yes he scored 18 league goals but he wants to go.

"The player doesn’t want to be part of the team anymore."

SportsMan United Could Let Cristiano Ronaldo Leave This Summer by Goalgist(op): 3:44pm On Aug 16, 2022
Manchester United could let Cristiano Ronaldo leave Old Trafford during the current transfer window amid concerns about how the striker’s mood is affecting morale in the camp.

Manager Erik ten Hag’s public stance has been that Ronaldo, 37, is not for sale and is part of his plans.

However, senior figures have been alarmed at how quickly the overwhelmingly positive feelings around the camp generated during a successful pre-season tour to Thailand and Australia have disappeared.

The Portuguese has a year left on the contract he signed when he returned to the club from Juventus less than 12 months ago. but wants United to let him leave this summer.

While successive English Premier League defeats to Brighton and Brentford have clearly shaken United badly, part of the overall picture has been put down to Ronaldo.

The Portuguese is said to be a negative presence at the club, hardly communicates with his team-mates in the canteen and has made no secret of his desire to move away.

According to BBCsport, Man United fear there will be no change to the club’s current issues until Ronaldo has gone and there is a belief amongst some that even if the forward left and there was no replacement, the general uplift would trigger a significant improvement in overall performances.

It is this issue Ten Hag, chief executive Richard Arnold and football director John Murtough are wrestling with before the transfer window closing on 1 September.

Winless United are bottom of the Premier League and play Liverpool on Monday 22 August.

SportsAntonio Conte: Lukaku Needed Inter Move To Be A ‘king’ by Goalgist(op): 8:26am On Aug 13, 2022
Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte believes Romelu Lukaku needed to return to Inter Milan to feel like a “king” again — but said the striker could still thrive in the English Premier League.

Lukaku rejoined Chelsea last summer in a club-record €115 million deal after two hugely successful years in Italy under Conte’s management, scoring 64 goals in 95 games and helping Inter end an 11-year wait for a Serie A title.

However, Lukaku struggled to settle in England as head coach Thomas Tuchel increasingly favoured Kai Havertz as his central striker, ending his sole campaign at Stamford Bridge with eight league goals in 26 appearances.

Asked whether he was surprised Lukaku’s move to Chelsea did not work out, Conte said:

"We are talking about a big amount of money for a player and I think we are talking about a really important striker in the world, but sometimes happens a situation outside of football.

"I think Romelu lived two years in Milan and he was the king, no? He was the king and the fans showed him a lot of passion, affection. He is a guy who needs this and for this reason I think he wanted to come back to Milan.

"For sure, the signing was a good signing for Chelsea. You know, there are players who need more time to become effective, no? But for sure, he was a good signing for Chelsea.

"For sure, he has the potential to play in the Premier League. I remember very well, when he started to play last season, he played really well and I remember that you and the media said ‘Lukaku is really strong.’

"Then, you don’t know. During the season, a lot of things can happen, drop the confidence. For sure, I know he is a bit disappointed because of his impact. He would prefer to have another impact in England. But he has time.

"Now it is right for him to play for an important club in Italy, to try to get again confidence in himself but we are talking about an important player, a really good striker."

SportsBarca Sell $103m Assets In Race To Register New Signings by Goalgist(op): 12:33pm On Aug 12, 2022
Barcelona have sold a further 24.5% of Barca Studios to Orpheus Media for €100 million in a bid to register all their new signings for Saturday's game against Rayo Vallecano.

Barca still have seven players unregistered heading into the first game of the season, but sources say they are hopeful the situation can now be resolved.

LaLiga will review the documents to see if everyone, including €45m signing Robert Lewandowski, can now be registered.

It is possible Barca still need to slightly reduce their wage bill to ensure everyone is available to face Rayo, but that could be done through an adjustment to Gerard Pique's salary, with talks at an advanced stage.

It is the fourth "financial lever" Barca have pulled this summer. They previously sold 24.5% of Barca Studios to Socios.com and vended 25% of their domestic television rights to Sixth Street for 25 years in two separate deals worth over €500m.

Barca had hoped the deals with Socios.com and Sixth Street would allow them to inscribe all of the players signed in the transfer window with LaLiga.

They were in talks with GDA Luma to sell another 24.5% of Barca Studios, but as talks stalled, they had to look elsewhere this week.

SportsErik Ten Hag’s ‘Five Strict New Rules’ For Manchester United’s Stars Revealed by Goalgist(op): 3:07pm On Jul 07, 2022
Erik ten Hag has delivered a set of five values he wishes his Manchester United players to abide by, according to reports.

The Dutchman, who was confirmed as United boss in April, is taking charge of his first campaign at Old Trafford and getting to know his squad.

The club are set to embark on a pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia later this month, ahead of the Premier League season kicking off in August.

Ten Hag has been getting to know his players at the team’s Carrington training base and is beginning to implement his own techniques and methods.

A strict disciplinarian, the 52-year-old has now laid down a set of rules he expects each of his players to abide by.

According to the Daily Mirror, they include the mantra that any player late to training or team meetings will be dropped without exception.

Drinking alcohol during a matchweek is also something that will be banned. This will essentially work as a blanket ban on alcohol across the season, with United regularly set to play twice a week due to European commitment.

One of the biggest changes will be to food. Ten Hag has banned players from adopting their own personal chefs and wants all players to use the canteen at Carrington as their main source for meals.

"I think he is the greatest footballer I have ever seen. I didn’t see [Johan] Cruyff live, I didn’t see [Diego] Maradona. Messi is the greatest footballer I have ever seen.

"I know Ronaldo’s numbers may be slightly better and he’s more of a big-game player and all of the rest of it, but, in terms of a pure footballer, Messi is the greatest. But, would you take Messi now in your team? Probably not.

SportsVictor Osimhen’s Agent Drags Him To Court by Goalgist(op): 2:17pm On Jun 28, 2022
Nigeria and Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been dragged to court by his former agent, according to OwnGoalNigeria.

It is also noted that the former agent is the brother-in-law of the 23-year-old.

Osimhen left Lille for Napoli in September 2020 for €71.2million (N31billion), which seems to be four times his real value in the market.

Napoli’s payment was so high that French and Italian law enforcement agencies intervened and caused trouble for Napoli and Osimhen, with reports stating that Lille’s headquarters was raided because of the deal. Even Napoli were dragged to court because of alleged inflation in the value of the transfer.

And now according to the report, Osimhen’s former agent Osita Okolo has filed a complaint against him at the Ikeja Magistrate court on account of his refusal to pay him his commission from the deal.

Okolo alleges that Osimhen kept most of the commission from his transfer to Napoli for himself because some of his family members in Nigeria needed it.

This lawsuit is coming two months after Osimhen ended his partnership with Okolo and he was replaced by Roberto Calenda.

Sports'Any Coach Playing Neymar On The Wing Is A Donkey!' by Goalgist(op): 1:41pm On Jun 28, 2022
Tite has labelled managers who deploy Neymar out wide as 'a donkey' as he says that the mercurial Paris Saint Germain star remains the 'solution' not the 'problem' for his national side.

The Brazil head coach, speaking to the podcast Sexta Estrela, said that Neymar's creative qualities make it baffling as to why a manager, nowadays, would select him out wide.

Neymar will make mistakes in the central areas, Tite believes, but that these are offset by his creative output and the benefits that brings the team.

He said:

"He is not a problem, he is a solution. Sometimes they say that there he will make more mistakes.

"His position makes him make more mistakes, because when he does it creatively, he will be decisive.

"If a coach selects Neymar from the side of the team, if I watch the game I will call him a donkey. A player with these qualities, putting on the bandwagon, greatly restricts creative capacity.

"Creativity is not constancy, it is eventuality, it is circumstantial. He will make more mistakes, yes, because his creative capacity and the place he is in demand it."

The English Football Association confirmed in January they were investigating the incident amid suspicious betting patterns.

Xhaka was booked by referee Andre Marriner for time wasting in the 86th minute during a straightforward 4-1 win for Arsenal at Elland Road against Leeds.

With Arsenal cantering to three points, Xhaka was cautioned during the closing stages after he delayed taking a free-kick.

And now, according to Sportsmail, the matter has been referred to to the UK's leading organised crime agency, although there is no suggestion that Xhaka or any of his Arsenal temmates are guilty of any wrongdoing.

Suspicions were raised by a wager of nearly £52,000 (N26.5million) placed during the match on Xhaka to be booked in the final 10 minutes. And the gamble earned a pay-out of around £250,000 (N127.9m)

Leading bookmakers reported it to the English FA due to the large amount of money involved and several industry sources said that the sum was far in excess of what is usually wagered on yellow cards.

In addition, the report claims that another bizarre aspect of the incident was that the odds offered on the betting exchange for Xhaka being booked were higher in the final 10 minutes than they had been before kick-off, which also prompted integrity concerns.

The English FA have not opened any investigation into Xhaka’s conduct but are understood to have passed on the information they have gathered to the National Crime Agency.

SportsCristiano Ronaldo Seeking Man United Exit This Summer by Goalgist(op): 3:41pm On Jun 17, 2022
Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly seeking an exit from Manchester United and could link back up with his former boss Jose Mourinho, according to reports.

Italian newspaper La Repubblica  writes that the Portuguese star said to not feel involved in the plan at Old Trafford under new manager Erik ten Hag.

The style of play of the Dutch manager is ill-suited to the forward and a shock move to Roma has been touted, where Ronaldo would be reunited with his former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho.

In addition, the report also claims that the lack of Champions League football next season is another factor that has increased the 37-year-old striker’s chance of departing the English club this summer.
