Naira loses steam, drops against the dollar at parallel market as speculators show resistance

The naira crashed to N1640/$1 at the parallel market at the close of business on Monday, December 9, 2024, ending four consecutive days of exchange rate appreciation since the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) migrated to the Enhanced Foreign Exchange Market System (EFEMS) platform.

This represents a N70 or 4.5% loss when compared with the N1570/$1 that was recorded on Friday, December 6, 2024, as the predicted resistance of forex speculators appears to have reared its ugly head.

A top Bureau De Change (BDC) operator had told Nairametrics that the hitherto huge dollar supply in the forex market had dried up as the resistance to the continuous appreciation of the local currency heightened.
He said, ‘’And the prediction of speculators resistance is what happened today as the naira lost value from #1535/$ on Friday to N1640 /$ this evening at the close of business. The hitherto dollar supplies in the market became completely dried as resistance to the appreciation of the local currency heightened.’’

Meanwhile, some other sources quoted the exchange rate at N1665/$1 at the parallel market.

The official market experienced rapid gains in the exchange rate, while the parallel market, where forex is traded unofficially, presented an even more unsettling scenario for speculators. The naira was gaining faster than they could sell.
The ABCON boss said the huge forex supply is struggling to cope with very weak demand stating that the development in the market calls for circumspection.
He said, ‘’Market is dull. Demand is very weak and supply very huge. The development in the market calls for circumspection. Already, there is a huge loss on speculators and currency substitutions.

‘’I can see speculators resisting the appreciation to cover their losses and the CBN needs to keep the momentum on ensuring hopes. Sometimes I wonder if the inorganic appreciation of the naira falls within the CBN templets.

The CBN should first maintain the momentum and discourage illegal behaviours of speculations and currency substitution and engage the BDCs where volatility is pervasive.’’

Last month, We assured candidates of our resolve to continue the recruitment process this September, which has just been resumed by the CDCFIB after several months of waiting.

On this note, applicants are candidly reminded that the the federal fire service has the lowest number of personnel and men compared to other services, and the staff size is not different in this mention and therefore, an extravagant intake shouldn’t be expected.

We understand that a number of candidates will be disappointed over non-selection but we all understand, there’s always a next time and other opportunities, it’s also not too late to get the call up.
So far, we are informed that Conpass 3, 4 & 7 candidates are currently enjoying the shortlisting and invitations from the board, other categories including conpass 6 and 8 is still under way and qualified candidates will hear from the board.

Regardless of the category or position applied for, shortlisting is still on, and a good number of applicants will be considered.

Candidates and group or parties who submitted details to my office, or at the state commands or any station for nomination or others in respect to this subject are duely assured of our commitment to ensure you are enlisted.

The Nigerian spirit, once strong and resilient, is now fractured and weak. The people cry out for change, for justice, for a chance at a better future. But their voices are drowned out by the deafening roar of corruption and greed.

It will be recalled that in December 2023, The CDCFIB and Federal Fire service reached an agreement to conduct a general staff recruitment for Assistant Superintendent and Inspectorate officers, then general Fire assistants on CONPASS 4 and 3 which led to the opening of the cdcfib.career portal for interested applicants to tender application.

The process which has lingered for a while saw myself and the Fire Commissioner’s meet with the Staff Development Committee and Board representatives earlier today to review the conditions and determine the best procedures for the continuation of the exercise.

In conclusion, non service officers and The General Public are once again to remain calm.
[b]The Ministry of Ministry of Interior Nigeria [/b]through the CDCFIB is currently auditing while promotions, reposting and reclassification of officers and men in the service continues for all service agencies under the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB) with the exercise to conclude by September.

Therefore, candidates are to note that the recruitment phases will take quick turn’s starting by early September, 2024. This is in compromise, our resolve with the board. Formation of technical, Screening and training team will equally be determined soonest owing to the outcomes of the transfers and repostings currently Ongoing.
