Good morning everyone. I haven't left Lagos yet. Upon arriving, I couldn't access funds due to circumstances beyond my control. Just have to wait till bank opens on Monday. I'll keep everyone here updated. I have to. I'm staying at a hotel now and the seller doesn't know we're here.

Not yet. I have to wait till Monday for bank to open. It's a long story. The car seller doesn't even know I'm already in Lagos.

I didn't actually buy the Acura MDX for 10 million naira. I paid 12.5 million. But I'm positive you can get the 2008 model for around 11 million. Maybe. If you want the MDX, have a budget of at least 13 million naira. I will give you my dealer's contact after I finish payment in November. That's because I don't want to recommend him until the transaction goes smoothly without issues. I hope you understand.

As far as I can tell, this dealer belongs with the association. You can see the header on his receipt mention the association. Also, everything that identify him in the particulars, from the shipping documents to the custom documents, always refer to his business name followed by the association. He even mentioned I should reserve 30k to pay the association when I come to pick the car.

Those IRS agents on ground were already hanging around as we negotiated with the dealer. She couldn't even wait for me to finish making the deposit before approaching me for the license plate, insurance, and other documentation. Cost me an extra 100k. I have already received sms alerts with my license plate number registered to the car.

The only other thing is the custom reference number. I have it but I haven't checked it out the way you described. The dealer was even encouraging me to go and do exactly what you said. That I'll find out everything is in order. He gave me photocopies of the vehicle papers.

Before you complete payment for that car ...kindly request the custom paper ...you will see the C number ...ask someone to direct you to the custom office near there at berger ...You will give the officer like 3k or more depending on what they charge now .He will send a reprint to your whatsap phone ...Ask him if the payment is okay to avoid custom problem on the way ...if he says is okay the go back to where that parked ...open the door ...you will see where the Chasis number is ...ensure it tallies with what is on the custom paper...or you can check the Chassis number on the windscreen ...confirm it tallies with that on the paper give to you ......This are due diligent you would ve done b4 even depositing . I.pray everything goes well...but if you enter those one chance inside there that doesn't belong to association...na you sabi ...I m praying for you ...that money you deposited is big

If you have an eye on fuel economy (which you must in this period), you can give the Ford Focus a consideration but it looks overpriced to me. You may not get anything close to that value if you plan to resell in the near future. There are sedans of the same price with same fuel economy that will give you a higher value in the future. The 2015 Hyundai Elantra and Sonata are equally good. Didn't want to mention Toyota since they are not on your list.

Both MDX and Crosstour are Honda vehicles. They are comfortable with good equipment and high ride height. The prices are good and they have good second hand value also. I have used both but fuel economy is like your regular SUV. Always needing more fuel. Mechanics are available.

The Buick Enclave is a sturdy vehicle. But you only see a few on the road. While I do not condemn it, you may struggle with competent technician for vehicles that are not too common on the road. The parts for these American vehicles are certainly available but I will thread with caution since countless more practical options are available.

The LR2 has reigned past though parts are also available. If you must use a Land Rover then be prepared to get competent technician for it and not your typical roadside mechanic. It's also not a vehicle for a first timer. You may be discouraged with expensive parts.

The G35 is a Japanese luxury for Nissan. Parts and mechanics are very much available. This vehicle was very popular about 10 to 12 years ago. It's a big engine no doubt, a bit fuel thirsty but not too much beyond the ordinary. I think the price is good too.

This model of Ford Edge is very common and the quoted price is very good. Do your maths well for an SUV based on the distance you commute being a first timer. Fiel price is not smiling. If you like it go first it because of the price.

I cannot comment on the Malibu and the Chrysler.

Can 10-12million buy you a brand new car in Nigeria e.g. Innoson, Hyundai, Kia, etc.? If yes, I would advice you go with a new car and get the rest of mind you need. It keeps you away from the mechanic and I am sure there will be reasonable warranty on it such that the first 3 to 5 years would come at no extra cost to you except for petrol.

Radautoworks could you tell me more about your work? Are you based in Lagos? I have already made a deposit on the MDX. I made a new post about it. This one people are responding to now was made like a week ago.

the MDX is by far the most reliable and cost effective on the list. They only come into our shop for routine maintenance. I can't remember the last time we had one come in with actual repair issues. Also, I own one so I know. Mine has 276k miles on it with the original engine and transmission. If you can get a 2014, even better.

The crosstour is okay too but parts will be expensive. Don't even think about from the Infiniti down unless you want to give people like me all your money

Whatever you buy, make sure to spend the money to get a complete inspection BEFORE purchase.

I will save your moniker and do you small giveaway when I eventually carry the car. Just for your kind words. No be say the others are not making sense, but your kind words are valid as well. My instincts would've rang alarm bells, even though I know people are right to say I have abnormally high risk tendencies. But like you said, not everyone is a crook. The dealer is, I'm sure, not a crook. I'll bring the car home without incidences.

You should have made some efforts to agree on the price with the advertiser before you embark on such journey. There are also some trusted car inspection personnel on NL that you should have contacted to help you establish a real link with the dealer for a fee which would have saved you a lot of stress.

Your risk level is extremely high. You have to work on your risk appetite going forward. Those papers you signed, they don't really matter in Nigeria. Do you have the strength to attend court sessions in Lagos or bribe police to help you make arrest? The stress is much.

When coming back to pick the vehicle, get a professional mechanic to scan the car for you in order to check that everything is intact.

I pray for good fortunes as well. You made valid points. By the way, my uncle couldn't have made a deal with them. He didn't even know them till we got there. I came with him because he's a commercial driver and knows cars almost like a mechanic. He's been driving for a long time. The most important aspect of your comment is going home with the car after making such a deposit. I may not travel all the way home with it but I can park it somewhere in Lagos. That's my mistake.

Let me give you one experience I had at berger ...I got to berger with my mechanic on Friday...I saw acura mdx 2011 for 7.5m by then ...After checking and confirming that the catalyst is intact ...I made a deposit of 1m to complete the full payment on Monday...very early Monday I went back with my mechanic...behold the car started smoking ....they claimed is morning dew ...but my.mechanic insist is not ...on a second check...we realised the have removed the catalyst ...immediately I had to invite the police ...demanding for my money ...cos at thst pint I have lost interest in the deal ...There chairman took us to his office and they resolved that I should choose any car of my choice within same range ...I had to choose another one after confirmation every thing is intact...My brother you don't have to make 10m deposit over a car thst cost 12.5m...Your deposit shoukd have been atleast 1or 2m cos anything can happen ...if I deposit 10m for a car if 12.5m .I most go with thst car ....it most park in my house ....they may still hold the custom paper ...10m is too much as deposit...That person thst accompanied you is like an inexperience person...I suspect he may have some deals with them ...judging from how he is pushing you to make deposit .

Finally , you are on your own on this matter ...when you wanna buy a car go with your trusted mechanic ...confirm everything using scanner ... more importantly there us a custom office at that berger market go there with the c number and ask the cudtom man to get you a reprint and advice you if payment was made in full ir compromise ..if compromise ...what's the risk of it ...cos you don't want custom impounding your ride while travelling . I pray for goidluck and may you never regret doing all this .

I was worried about this exact same thing. There was no time for lawyers and besides my lawyer isn't in Lagos. But we signed a proper agreement. I'll post the photos here soon. The agreement includes the chassis number of the car I bought, so, that should prevent them from trying to give me even another model of the same car.

So, aside the disappointment of being given a much higher price than advertised, I feel happy. This SUV is in very good condition. The sound when you turn on the ignition is superb.
