Politics / What Osinbajo Told Yoruba Monarchs About Insecurity In South West by Goldenovas: 9:04pm On Jul 20, 2019
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Saturday held consultations with the Akarigbo of Remoland, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, as well as other monarchs in Ogun State.

The consultations were on the way out of the security challenges currently confronting Nigeria

Osinbajo was accompanied to the palace of Ajayi by Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun.

The vice president, who fielded questions from newsmen after the meeting, said the meeting was on the instruction of President Muhammadu Buhari.

“As you know, there are many significant security concerns all over the country, and there are concerns also in the Southwest.

“So, I am here on the instruction of the president to consult with the traditional ruler, the governor and others on what to do to beef up security and to generally improve the security architecture.

“Of course, you know that Kabiyesi is not just a traditional ruler, but a very important part of the government.

“That is why we are here; to talk to him and agree on few modalities for beefing up security; and ensuring that we are fully conscious of all that is going on, just to be sure that peace and security reigns here and across the country.

“I think for all of us, the most important thing to realise is that we are one Nigeria; we are one country; we need to work together to ensure that it is peaceful, secured and happy for all of us,’’ he said.

He noted that Nigeria had the potential to give its citizens all they desired.

Osinbajo, however, said that some people were working against the interest of the country by trying to cause instability, NAN reports.

He expressed optimism that by God’s grace, Nigeria would overcome all its problems and set itself on the path of peace and prosperity.

The vice president, in company of Abiodun, then proceeded to Ijebu Ode, where he also held a private meeting with the Awujale of Ijebu Kingdom, Oba Sikiru Adetona.

Speaking with newsmen after, Osinbajo said that Awujale was one of the most important voices in the Southwest.

He said they had discussed on the very important steps to take in order to improve the security architecture generally.

According to him, the monarch has given a lot of insight; his own views, on what needs to be done, how to go about it; and what has been done already.

“But very importantly, it is his commitment to ensuring that there is peace and security, and that everybody lives in peace with one another and maintains the highest level of security.

“We are consulting with many of the traditional rulers across the country, but there are concerns in the Southwest now.

“I will be in Osun on Tuesday; we are going to go round to see the Alake, the Oni and other traditional rulers, and primarily, they themselves want to participate in improving the security architecture.

“The President has spoken about the role of traditional rulers in maintaining peace and security in their own localities.

“As we know, they are the closest to the grassroots; the closest to their communities.

“One of the critical things we expect with our community policing efforts is some integration between the traditional rulers, the community and police; and efforts they are making to improve intelligence; and we need to understand what is going on.

“We need to know who is where and what exactly is happening all around so they can be transmitted to the more formal security agencies such as the police and the army, depending on where and what the situation is,” he said.

The vice president had earlier attended the installation of 90-year-old Chief Emmanuel Osibona as the Father of the Church, ‘Baba Ijo’, of Our Saviour’s Anglican Church, Ikenne, Ogun, his hometown.

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, has encouraged Zinedine Zidane to “drop his interest in Paul Pogba”, according to The UK Independent.

Pogba is “desperate to leave Old Trafford” according to agent Mino Raiola and Zidane is keen to sign the midfielder.

But United are reportedly demanding close to £200m for the World Cup winner.

Madrid do not have such money to spend, after going big on landing Eden Hazard from Chelsea, who could get as much as £150million from the deal.

Perez also asked Zidane to bring Gareth Bale back into his first team plans, with Los Blancos struggling to sell the unwanted Wales international.

Bale has been frozen out of the team since Zidane’s return in March and the player admitted he would be happy to run down his contract in Madrid.

TV/Movies / Bbnaija 2019: Divergent Views Trail Call To Ban Show by Goldenovas: 7:36pm On Jul 19, 2019
Pastor Felix Ajide of King Jesus Praiseland Assembly says that the ongoing Big Brother Naija season (4) show promotes immorality and is not good for the society.

Ajide told the News Agency of Nigeria on Friday in Abuja that the show was pornographic in nature, adding that it has no moral value, hence the need to ban it.

He said that the resources used in promoting the show should be used for the development of the society.

“The show should be banned because there is nothing to learn from it, we are only watching immorality.

“If the western world is doing it, we do not need it here in Nigeria; we need deliverance in this country,” he added.

On the contrary, a Muslim woman, who pleaded anonymity, said it was not necessary for the show to be banned.

“Why should it be banned, it is optional for you to watch or better still unsubscribe that particular channel if it is offensive to you.

“Most of the things people are complaining about such as the bathroom section are no more aired.

“It has also created opportunities to showcase our culture as well as give room for people to sell their products and give added value to their products,” she said.

The Muslim Rights Concern has labelled the reality show as ‘immoral, dangerous and bohemian’ and also wondered why the Ministry of Information and Culture is doing nothing over the show.

She, however, maintained that the show had given room for employment, like the cleaners that keep the place clean and the hair makers among others.

She said that the show was an avenue to improve Nigeria’s economy such as in data buying.

She also described the show as a means where the housemates showcase what they are made of as well as a means of identifying their potentials.

She, therefore, advised the organisers of the show to ensure that housemates do not expose their nudity so as not to be seen as a pornographic show.

Also speaking, Chinonye Anokam, a civil servant, described the show as an avenue where Nigerian youth discover their hidden talents and realise their dreams.

Anokam said that the show was entertaining and described it as a place where potentials are harnessed as well as an avenue for promoting unity among Nigerians.

“Outside the social aspect of the show, there are other things to learn from the show such as how to live with people with different upbringing among others.

“You might not know the talent you have but the show presents the avenue where people discover their talents,” she said.

Anokam, therefore, suggested that the organisers of the show should have restrictions in the house in terms of relationship between the opposite sexes.

She, however, suggested that participants should focus on the core objectives of the big brother show.

Mr Mustapha Suleiman, a businessman, said that the show was unethical, hence he supported the call for its ban.

He emphasised that there was nothing moral to learn from the show, adding that some participants on the show are living fake life.

‘Farming’, the acclaimed memoir film of Nigerian-British actor Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, featuring Nollywood Diva Genevieve Nnaji, is to hit Cinemas on October 11,its producers has said.

‘Farming’ is based on the life story of Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje who grew up as a young fostered Nigerian boy that struggled to find an identity in 1980’s England.

The movie is his directorial debut, and features international stars Damson Idris, Kate Beckinsale, John Dagleish, Jaime Winstone, Genevieve Nnaji, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw.

It received its world premiere at the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and its trailer is now released by the producers.

The plot of ‘Farming’ follows intriquing story of young Enitan (Akinnuoye-Agbaje) who was adopted by a foster British mother (Kate Beckinsale) as he struggled to cope with the harsh realities of racism at the time.

In a scene, the young Enitan tried washing off his skin colour after he was ridiculed for being too black by his adopted mum’s friends.

He went as far as painting himself white just to look and feel white and suffered several humiliations, but gradually falls deep into the bullish gang’s clique to become one of them.

Akinnuoye-Agbaje is a British actor and former fashion model was born in Islington, London, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba origin, who were students in the UK.

He is famous for his roles as Simon Adebisi on Oz, Nykwana Wombosi in The Bourne Identity, Kurse in Thor: The Dark World, Killer Croc in Suicide Squad.

He also played Mr. Eko on Lost, Malko in the fifth season of the HBO series Game of Thrones and Dave Duerson in the NFL biopic drama Concussion.

When Akinnuoye-Agbaje was six weeks old, his biological parents gave him up to a white working-class family in Tilbury.

It was a common practice then among Nigerian families, when parents sent young children to live in the UK with white foster parents in the hopes their children would have better lives.

At 8, his biological parents brought him back to Nigeria but, as he was unable to speak the Yoruba Language and forbidden by his parents to speak English, and was returned to Tilbury.

The brief exposure to Nigeria left him struggling to reconcile his heritage with the distinctly British culture and environment he was raised in.

As a young boy, facing a cultural identity crisis, he joined a local Skinhead gang in order to escape racial persecution at their hands until he came to terms with his background, turning his life around.

Politics / Tribunal Denies PDP More Time To Close Case by Goldenovas: 2:23pm On Jul 19, 2019
The Presidential Election Petitions Tribunal has denied People’s Democratic Party and its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar’s request for more time to conclude their case.

Chairman of the tribunal, Justice Mohammed Garba, ruled that the tribunal will continue with proceedings till later in the day to enable the petitioners to conclude their case.

Chris Uche, PDP’s lawyer, asked for more time from the tribunal to conclude defence’s case. The tribunal granted the PDP 10 days to conclude its case which lapses on Friday.

Uche is requesting for more time so that the tribunal can have time to treat the documents he presented today.

The documents include Expert Report of INEC’s Electoral Information Systems as revealed by Whistle Blowers Website, Downloaded documents from the website, Certificate of Compliance and Executive Summary for the 11 states under review.

The lawyers to President Muhammadu Buhari and the All Progressives Congress, however, objected to the admissibility of the documents with a promise to give reasons for their objection in their final address.

Garba noted their objections but admitted the documents as exhibits.

PDP called its 59th witness, David Njoga, an ICT expert from Kenya who claims to have obtained data from INEC server.

Under cross-examination, lawyers to President Buhari and the APC disagreed with the witness on the ground that the website where the witness obtained his data does not belong to INEC.

The PDP also tendered Forms EC8 a and EC8 B which are result sheets from seven local government areas in Kano State.

Lawyers to INEC, President Buhari, and the APC objected to the admissibility of the documents.

The chairman of the tribunal, however, admitted the documents as exhibits having noted the objection of the respondents.
