The Independent National Electoral Commission said it would engage the services of Nigerian Air Force, Navy and other security agencies for adequate security during general elections in 2015. Austin Okojie, the commission’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in Taraba, disclosed this while addressing Batch B corps members at NYSC Orientation Camp in Jalingo on Sunday. Okojie explained that the move was necessary given the level of insecurity in the country. “The commission is making arrangements with the Nigerian Air Force, Navy and other security agents to ensure safety of lives and property during the 2015 general elections. “We expect Nigerians to understand that the engagement of security agents to maintain law and order is to enable us to conduct free, fair and acceptable elections’’, he said. Okojie advised corps members to be patriotic in the elections. Freeman Tumba, the State Coordinator of NYSC, commended the role of corps members in the country’s electoral process so far. He said corps members were the best set of Nigerians to bring credibility to the nation’s electoral process.

The Ugandan baby who was viciously assaulted by a maid in a video that went viral last week has recovered from her injuries and is back in the loving arms of her parents. (pictured above) According to Ugandan NTV report, the house-help, 22year old Jolly Tumuhirwe faces up to 15 years in jail for attempted murder. The lady appeared at Nakawa Magistrates Court in Uganda on Nov. 20th after police concluded their investigations. The police say she was charged under the Anti- torture Act The court didn't grant her bail, so Jolly is currently remanded at Luzira prison in Uganda. The maid had only worked with the family for one month before she was filmed brutally assaulting the baby. And yes, the baby's father Erick Kimanzi, admitted to beating the maid after watching the video. Below is a video report from NTV...it's in their language so you might understand exactly what is being said...

South Africa is not ready to host the Africa Cup of Nations in January if Morocco withdraws because of the Ebola epidemic, Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula said Monday. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly approached South Africa, Ghana and five others countries ahead of a November 2 meeting to decide on the future of the continent’s premier football event. But the minister tweeted: “Hosting AFCON (Africa Cup of Nations) is a NO NO.” He told South African media that the country had a responsibility to help fight to help fight the Ebola epidemic that has killed more than 4,500 people, mainly in West Africa, with the UN predicting a surge in deaths and cases. “Even before taking the matter to cabinet, I can tell you unambiguously and categorically that hosting is a no no,” he told South African media. “We do not have a ready-made abundance of resources to be shifted to AFCON. “We did it (host the 2013 AFCON) in solidarity with Libya last year. Our budget cycle will not allow us to host the (2015) AFCON. It is totally impossible. “We would like to give this one a pass.” Mbalula added: “We will share the responsibility to fight Ebola — we are not immune to that. “We must be prepared to share our skills, our doctors, to reinforce the research to find a vaccine.” South Africa were among seven countries sounded out by the CAF as possible replacements should Morocco pull out. The republic have twice been ‘emergency’ hosts of the competition, replacing cash-strapped Kenya in 1996 and strife-torn Libya last year. The identities of the other five countries have not been officially revealed. Moroccan government officials have said last weekend they wanted the January 17-February 8 tournament postponed because they feared a spread of the deadly Ebola virus. But Cairo-based CAF reacted swiftly, saying the 16-nation tournament should go ahead as planned, in a different country if necessary. South Africa has world-class stadia having become the first African hosts of the World Cup four years ago. Ghana have also been approached country that was approached by CAF, according to the sports minister of the west African country. source: nigerianeye.com |

The Liberian Government on Thursday apologised to Nigeria for the role they played in bringing the deadly Ebola Virus to the country. Patrick Sawyer It would be recalled that the first case of Ebola hit Nigeria after a Liberian-born American, Patrick Sawyer, who was already infected with the virus, arrived Lagos on July 20 from Lome but died five days after he was admitted into a hospital in Obalende. The Liberian-born American came into contact with 59 people in both the Murtala Mohammed International Airport and the hospital. Eight of the hospital contacts were quarantined at the Infectious Diseases Hospital in Yaba. One of them, a nurse, who treated the deceased, died on Tuesday, August 5 becoming the first Nigerian casualty. Five others, including a female medical doctor, had as of Wednesday, tested positive to the virus. RELATED: 932 Have Died From Ebola - WHO Meanwhile, the Liberian Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Nurudeem Mohammed, told journalists in Abuja that President Ellen Sirleaf-Johnson, was deeply sorry that Sawyer brought the virus to Nigeria. He stated that the deceased was under surveillance in Liberia but that he sneaked into Lagos. Mohammed said: “The Liberian President has personally called to apologise on the unfortunate development. “She specifically said her country had declared a state of emergency over the Ebola epidemic in Liberia. “She equally apologised that Sawyer ignored medical advice and escaped out of Liberia.” It would be added that yesterday the United States of America President Barack Obama has refused to send experimental drug to Africa saying: “The countries affected by the virus should concentrated on building a “strong public infrastructure, I think we have to let the science guide us. And I don’t think all the information is in on whether this drug is helpful.” Naij.com |
