Thy word, O Lord, with friendly aid,
Restores our wandering feet,
Converts the sorrows of the mind
To joys divinely sweet.

O, send thy light and truth abroad,
In all their radiant blaze;
And bid the admiring world adore
The glories of thy grace.

She nodded again.  "When a door closes, another door opens. Cheer up, Rose. You have your life to live."

Her face brightened up. "I'm happy I came to you. The way you talk has considerably reduced my burden."

I smiled modestly. "It's okay, to God be the glory."

“I don't think my pastor will do better than what you've done."

I smiled again. "As I said, to God be the glory."

There was silence for some seconds.

"I want to ask you a question," she said. "And I want you to be very sincere with me."

 "No problem, go ahead."

There was another pause for several seconds.

"Could it be that I'm not attractive enough? I mean, why will he dump me just like that?"

What a question from Rose.

“I think it's beyond being attractive. Some men are not just satisfied with what they have."

She stood up. "I agree with what you said. But look at me. Am I really attractive, or not? Be sincere."

I looked at her as she wanted.

Her height was average. Her chocolate colour blended with her skin. She had a pretty face. She was on the chubby side, but not fat. Her  chest region showed that she was a bit busty. The rounded breasts appeared to look firm. The waist was slim without visible signs of fat. Her thighs were curvy, down to her knees and legs.

The bums needed no padding the way they were accentuated by the shorts she was wearing.

“You are beautiful and attractive, Rose," I said and meant it.

Her next action surprised me. She sat down, covered her face with her palms and started crying.

(Stories of Inspiration)

Toyin Raphael

Life is all about hope and inspiration. I mean how will life be without these vital ingredients? Dreadful, I suppose.

This is a compilation of stories that will synergize you never to say never again.

See you at the top.

Acknowledgement: The stories are from different sources.

1. Laziness won’t get you anywhere

“In ancient times, a king had his men place a boulder on a roadway. He then hid in the bushes, and watched to see if anyone would move the boulder out of the way. Some of the king’s wealthiest merchants and courtiers passed by and simply walked around it.

Many people blamed the King for not keeping the roads clear, but none of them did anything about getting the stone removed.

One day, a peasant came along carrying vegetables. Upon approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to push the stone out of the way. After much pushiA g and straining, he finally managed.

After the peasant went back to pick up his vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. The purse contained many gold coins and note from the King explain that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the road.”

2. Don’t say something you regret out of anger

“There once was a little boy who had a very bad temper. His father decided to hand him a bag of nails and said that every time the boy lost his temper, he had to hammer a nail into the fence.

On the first day, the boy hammered 37 nails into that fence.

The boy gradually began to control his temper over the next few weeks, and the number of nails he was hammering into the fence slowly decreased. He discovered it was easier to control his temper than to hammer those nails into the fence.

Finally, the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father the news and the father suggested that the boy should now pull out a nail every day he kept his temper under control.

The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence.

‘You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say I’m sorry, the wound is still there.'”

3. Stop wasting your time complaining

“People visit a wise man complaining about the same problems over and over again. One day, he decided to tell them a joke and they all roared with laughter.

After a few minutes, he told them the same joke and only a few of them smiled.

Then he told the same joke for a third time, but no one laughed or smiled anymore.

The wise man smiled and said: ‘You can’t laugh at the same joke over and over. So why are you always crying about the same problem?'”

6. Struggling will make you stronger

“Once upon a time, a man found a butterfly that was starting to hatch from its cocoon. He sat down and watched the butterfly for hours as it struggled to force itself through a tiny hole. Then, it suddenly stopped making progress and looked like it was stuck.

Therefore, the man decided to help the butterfly out. He took a pair of scissors and cut off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.

The man thought nothing of it, and he sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the butterfly. However, that never happened. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with small wings and a swollen body.

Despite the man’s kind heart, he didn’t understand that the restricting cocoon and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small hole were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings to prepare itself for flying once it was free.”

7. Your reaction matters more than what happens to you

“Once upon a time a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.

Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot, and ground coffee beans in the third pot.

He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter. The daughter, moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing.

After twenty minutes he turned off the burners. He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the boiled eggs out and placed them in a bowl.

He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup. Turning to her he asked. ‘Daughter, what do you see?’

‘Potatoes, eggs, and coffee,’ she hastily replied.

‘Look closer,’ he said, ‘and touch the potatoes.’ She did and noted that they were soft. He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg. Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

‘Father, what does this mean?’ she asked.

He then explained that the potatoes, the eggs and coffee beans had each faced the same adversity– the boiling water.

However, each one reacted differently.

The potato went in strong, hard, and unrelenting, but in boiling water, it became soft and weak.

The egg was fragile, with the thin outer shell protecting its liquid interior until it was put in the boiling water. Then the inside of the egg became hard.

However, the ground coffee beans were unique. After they were exposed to the boiling water, they changed the water and created something new.

‘Which are you,’ he asked his daughter. ‘When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a potato, an egg, or a coffee bean?’

It was a lady in t-shirt and bum-short that was there.

"Good ... good evening, Miss Rose," I stuttered.

She was the last person I was expecting. And certainly, she was the last person I expected to see wearing braless top and bum-shorts.

"Sorry to disturb," she said softly. "Can I come in for a moment?"

"Sure," I replied and opened the door wide for her to enter.

I motioned her to the only chair in the room.

"Thank you," she muttered and turned the chair to face the bed where I sat down. "I just feel like chatting with you," she said, smiling briefly.

"I could have told Sharon, but I have a feeling it would be better I tell you."

I smiled to encourage her. "It's okay, Ms. Rose. I have listening ears."

She grinned. "Call me Rose. Just Rose will be okay."

I nodded and stared at her. "Okay, Rose." I studied her.

Her pretty face looked calm. She should be in her early thirties. I had known her for many hours and up till now, she had exuded confidence in her conduct and discharge of duty.

What could be the matter with her?  lucky. I can tell you categorically that to experience heartbreak to wasn't an easy thing. She nodded. Now, I had hints on what was the problem.

"Are you heartbroken?" I asked.

She nodded. "About an hour ago, the man I was going to marry called that he had cancelled the introduction plan."

I was genuinely touched. "That's a hard one. Sorry about that."

She sighed. "Thanks."

I could imagine the pain and I knew the pang of disappointment was not easy, especially when one least expected it.

"Perhaps you could reconcile," I suggested.

"I don't think so. He has just confirmed the rumour that he is dumping me for my best friend."

I was astonished. "That's incredible. Your best friend?"

"Exatly. He told me to completely forget about him because they've already picked a wedding date."

"Oh, oh. That's very mean of him. That your friend too is not a true friend. But, it's okay. Sometimes, life can be so mean and unfair. I believe in providence. The two of you were probably not meant for each other.”

She nodded again.  "When a door closes, another door opens. Cheer up, Rose. You have your life to live."

"You can do the same to the second leg."

I nodded and   started working on the second leg. I felt this was all contrived, but there was no problem. I was enjoying this as much as she.

The act of rubbing and massaging the leg made her bum to jiggle when I did it fast. I was delighted to watch that. You are a bad boy, I told myself.

After several minutes, she opened her eyes.

"You've really done well, Seyi. Thank you."

I smiled at her. "It's a pleasure, Madam Fransisca. You're welcome."

She seemed quite surprised I addressed her that way. She turned to sit on the mat.

"Are you okay, now?" I asked as I stood up.

She lifted her two hands for me to lift her up. I did and we stood close. I was much taller. I moved back to sit where I had sat before. She walked with a slight limp to one of the wardrobes.

"Maybe you should be careful next time," I suggested. "Don't ride too fast."

"Advice noted," she replied.

She opened the wardrobe and brought a bath robe out.

"Now, I will like to have a bath."

I stood up. "I'll be in the sitting-room."

Even as I sat in the sitting-room, my mind was busy. I had no doubt Madam Fransisca created the scene of what happened some minutes ago.

What would be her reason for doing that? Was she trying to enthral me or what? I picked the remote control and settled for a station showing a romantic comedy.

A young man, probably in his early thirties was dating a woman probably in her fifties. There was just a little challege.

The society understood them. If that should happen in Nigeria, the couple would be derided. It would be either the man used 'juju' on the woman or it was the woman that 'jazzed' the man.

Kubrat came to meet me. "What will you like for breakfast?" she asked.

I didn't think much. "Anything," I answered. I was left alone again.

In the movie, the guy knelt down to propose to his older partner. My mind went back to Madam Fransisca. If my fantasies ever materialized, I would have to do something like that.

But, my thoughts were just fantasies. If her intention was just to flirt, we would definitely  have intimate relationship, but since she had repeatedly said sex was not on her mind, it meant the relationship could not go deeper than this.

Then, my mind faltered.

Romance. Sexuality . Mystery

Seyi prides himself as a young man of dignity who will not be seduced by the opposite sex no matter how beautiful and alluring.

He is able to maintain this lofty stance until he meets Madam Francisca, the lady who disarms him and gets him spellbound.

I tried to make the class as interesting as possible. Literature is one subject I teach with passion. The SS 2 Literature-in-English class had always been lively.

The bell rang to signal the end of the period. Just then, a girl called Jennifer raised up her hand.

"Sorry, Jenny, I have to leave the class now. Can you ask the question in the next Literature period? If it is a pressing question, you can come around during break to see me in the staff room."

She looked disappointed as she put her hand down. I went for my next class. It was actually a busy day for me. I had no free period until the break time. Even after that, I had no any free period until closing time.

The pay was low, but the school still paid much more than many other private schools. The driving force was the passion I had for the job. I loved to impart knowledge, and that mattered a lot.

The school closed for the day at quarter to four o'clock. I decided to stay behind and write some notes. Some teachers stayed behind too, but by five p.m, all the teachers had left, leaving only Ada and me.

"Thank God we are now alone," Ada started. "There is a matter I will like to discuss with you."

The keenness of her voice showed that indeed, she had been angling to have a private conversation with me.

"I'm all ears," I said. She smiled. "It is actually a request and I hope you can grant it."

Ada was one of the closest teachers to me since I joined Highworth College about eight months ago. As close as we were, everything between us was official.

I suspected she should be about my age, but one could not be too certain about such a thing. I was twenty-eight years of age. I could be described as young, full of life and vibrant. Now, I wondered the kind of request Ada had in mind.

"Go on," I prompted her.

"Well, it's not much. It's just that right now, I have accommodation challenge. The aunty I'm staying with will, by this weekend, relocate with her husband to Ibafo.

“So, it will be too expensive for me to be coming from Ibafo to Ogba every day. I need a temporary accommodation. I plan to rent accommodation around here, but in the mean time, I need somewhere to stay."

I was full of thought over what she said. But, there was actually no need to think much. The answer to her request was a capital NO.

"Your request will not be granted for many reasons," I stated. "I have a fiancee who, first and foremost, will not accept that inclusion."

Ada's face clouded. "You have a fiancee?" she interjected in surprise.

Some may say it doesn't work.

Some may question divine power and efficacy.

I know for sure that what Nigeria needs is prayer. Sincere prayers.

Different leaders might have shown incompetence, or disappointment. We should not despair. There's no need to curse anyone or to spew so much acrimony.

Prayers will work. Sincere prayers.

Nigerians will be blessed in Jesus mighty name.

The works and the word of God.
Psalm 19.

The heavens declare thy glory, Lord!
In every star thy wisdom shines;
But when our eyes behold thy word,
We read thy name in fairer lines.

2 The rolling sun, the changing light,
And nights and days, thy power confess;
But the blest volume thou hast writ,
Reveals thy justice and thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars, convey thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never stand;
So when thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.

4 Nor shall thy spreading gospel rest
Till through the world thy truth has run;
Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light, or feel the sun.

5 Great Sun of Righteousness! arise;
Bless the dark world with heavenly light:
Thy gospel makes the simple wise,
Thy laws are pure, thy judgments right.

6 Thy noblest wonders here we view,
In souls renewed, and sins forgiven;
Lord! cleanse my sins, my soul renew,
And make thy word my guide to heaven.

4. Damaged souls still have worth

“A shop owner placed a sign above his door that said: ‘Puppies For Sale.’

Signs like this always have a way of attracting young children, and to no surprise, a boy saw the sign and approached the owner; ‘How much are you going to sell the puppies for?’ he asked.

The store owner replied, ‘Anywhere from $30 to $50.’

The little boy pulled out some change from his pocket. ‘I have $2.37,’ he said. ‘Can I please look at them?’

The shop owner smiled and whistled. Out of the kennel came Lady, who ran down the aisle of his shop followed by five teeny, tiny balls of fur.

One puppy was lagging considerably behind. Immediately the little boy singled out the lagging, limping puppy and said, ‘What’s wrong with that little dog?’

The shop owner explained that the veterinarian had examined the little puppy and had discovered it didn’t have a hip socket. It would always limp. It would always be lame.

The little boy became excited. ‘That is the puppy that I want to buy.’

The shop owner said, ‘No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.’

The little boy got quite upset. He looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger, and said;

‘I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact, I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for.’

The shop owner countered, ‘You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to run and jump and play with you like the other puppies.’

To his surprise, the little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace. He looked up at the shop owner and softly replied, ‘Well, I don’t run so well myself, and the little puppy will need someone who understands!'”

5. Never let one failure from the past hold you back in the future

“As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made no attempt to get away. ‘Well,’ trainer said, ‘when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.’

The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.”

The wise man smiled and said: ‘You can’t laugh at the same joke over and over. So why are you always crying about the same problem?'”

"Won't your girlfriend miss you in the next few days?" Sharon suddenly asked.

I grinned grimly. "No. There was an issue between us and we are presently not on talking terms."

Sharon sighed. "What about you? Surely, your boyfriend will miss you."

She stared at some tiles before answering. "Right now, I don't have a boyfriend."

It was my turn to sigh. We played the game on. By seven in the evening, Miss Rose knocked at the door.

"Dinner is ready!" she called out.

How time flies. Sharon and I suspended our game and went to the dining-room. A hot meal of poundo yam, egusi soup and beef was served. I must say I enjoyed the meal. There were fruit juices to take as dessert.

Several minutes later, I was back in my room. I was not surprised when Sharon came to join me some minutes after.

"Hope you're enjoying yourself around here," she said.

I nodded. "Sure, I do. What about you?"

She nodded. "Can't say I don't."

She sat on the chair she was sitting on before we went for dinner while I sat on the edge of the bed.

She did not come with the game, this time around, which meant she only wanted to chat.

So, we chatted. She told me about her university days and some friends she missed.

"With social media, you can still maintain contact," I pointed out.

"Yeah, that's true, but it can still not be as effective as real contact."

We talked on and on until she decided to go. "I woke up very early this morning and I need to go to bed early," she explained.

I nodded. "I can understand."

She yawned again and stood up. "Seyi, it's a pleasure talking with you. Good night."

I smiled at her. "The pleasure is mine. Goodnight, Sharon."

She left the room. What a lady. How I wished my dear Precious was a good convesationist.

My mind paused to think about Precious. How could I be certain about referring to her as 'my dear Precious'? What if she had actually made up her mind that she would never relate with me again? I shook my head.

No, that could not be. Precious would definitely come back, I told myself. I lay on the bed but stared at the television. Gospel music was played on it, but my mind was hardly there.

I was thinking more about Sharon. I wondered if she was not giving me the green light. Then, I cautioned myself. I had just known her and she was only trying to be friendly. She looked nice and decent, though.

But then, I was just getting to know her. There was a soft rap at the door. Sharon must have come back, I thought in excitement as I quickly made for the door. It was a lady in t-shirt and bum-short that was there.

Kubrat retreated from the bed-room, closing the door gently behind her. The rhythm of my heart beat changed as I stared at Big Aunty.

What a body to look at. How was she able to do it? According to her, she had not engaged in any intimate relationship with a man since she lost her husband about two years ago.

How was she able to keep ravenous men off from having this bewitching body? She must be a super woman. She must be super resolute. There must be something very special about her.

She was wearing a sky blue active sports bra, a navy blue tight shorts that started just below her navel and moved down to the middle of her thighs, and a pair of black canvass wears that covered her feet.

I had seen many ladies in sports and yoga wears before, but this one struck me as captivating. I nodded as if in approval.

"A good morning exercise is good for the body," I said.

"Sure," she replied and pedalled the bike.

She had purposely brought me there to see what she was doing. Okay. Now, I could see the outline of her boobs, which were neither big nor small but were firm - probably, courtesy of the firm, sports bra.

I could see the tummy with slight signs of fat at the waist line. I could also see the smooth, robust thighs that tappered down to the legs. I had variously seen things like these before. I had seen ladies in skimpy wears at close range.

I had seen ladies' nudity and looked on as if it meant nothing. Why was I captivated by this? She increased the speed and suddenly let out a moan. She She removed her legs from the pedals and put them on the floor.

Then, she held the left leg.

"Oh gosh!"

I was on my feet and  I was with her.

"Did you hurt yourself?" I asked in concern.

"Yep."

I held the leg and looked as if trying to determine which part.

"The muscle of the leg."

My hands quickly went to that part and I rubbed it. The way I did, it would soothe her if it was a muscle pull.

"Let me get down from the bike," she said.

"Okay."

She put her left arm round my neck while I used my right hand to support her by holding her waist. Gently, she dismounted the bike.

She pointed at the mat. I supported her to it and she lay down and turned on her belly.

“Is there any ointment I can use?"

She shook her head. I started rubbing and massaging the leg.

Whether it was real or fake, I was glad to do this. She closed her eyes.

After some minutes, I asked her if she felt better.

"Yes", she replied. "I feel better. Thanks a lot."

I stopped the massaging.

"You can do the same to the second leg."

WHAT SHALL I SAY

What shall I say, unto the Lord.

All I have to say is “Thank you, Lord”.

What shall I say, unto the Lord.

All I have to say is Thank you, Lord.

Thank you Lord, Thank you Lord.

All I have to say is “THANK YOU, LORD!”
