Ada's face clouded. "You have a fiancee?" she interjected in surprise.

I chuckled and nodded. Should that be a surprise? "And another thing is: it will not be good for a guy and a lady to be co-habitating just like that."

Now, it sounded like I was making a sermon. "I'm sorry, Ada, if there's any other way I can help, I'll render it."

She tried to shrug it off. Some minutes later she announced that she would be leaving.

I glanced at my watch.

"I'll soon be leaving too," I said as I bade her goodnight. I worked for some more minutes and decided to call it a day. It was some minutes to six o 'clock. The two-storey bulding was very quiet.

I knew the security man would still be in the cubicle by the gate. He doubled as the janitor that would go round and lock the place. I put few books in my back-pack and stood up to go.

I was at the head of the stairs when I saw a student in mufti coming up. It was no other person than Jennifer.

"What! You're still in school?" I said in surprise.

She looked at me and smiled. "Yes, I forgot something."

Her class was in the middle floor, so I wondered what she was coming up to do. "And since you're still around, I decided to come."

How did she know I was still around? I remained on the same spot while she came up. When she was three steps to where I was, she stopped.

"Can we go back to your staff-room?" she said. "I will like to ask my questions there."

An alarm bell rang in my brain. "I'm sorry, school is over for today."

She shook her head like a petulant girl. "You are not going anywhere until you answer my questions."

Enchanted

Toyin Olorunsola

(C) 2023

Romance. Sexuality . Mystery

Seyi prides himself as a young man of dignity who will not be seduced by the opposite sex no matter how beautiful and alluring.

He is able to maintain this lofty stance until he meets Madam Francisca, the lady who disarms him and gets him spellbound.

I tried to make the class as interesting as possible. Literature is one subject I teach with passion. The SS 2 Literature-in-English class had always been lively.

The bell rang to signal the end of the period. Just then, a girl called Jennifer raised up her hand.

"Sorry, Jenny, I have to leave the class now. Can you ask the question in the next Literature period? If it is a pressing question, you can come around during break to see me in the staff room."

She looked disappointed as she put her hand down. I went for my next class. It was actually a busy day for me. I had no free period until the break time. Even after that, I had no any free period until closing time.

The pay was low, but the school still paid much more than many other private schools. The driving force was the passion I had for the job. I loved to impart knowledge, and that mattered a lot.

The school closed for the day at quarter to four o'clock. I decided to stay behind and write some notes. Some teachers stayed behind too, but by five p.m, all the teachers had left, leaving only Ada and me.

"Thank God we are now alone," Ada started. "There is a matter I will like to discuss with you."

The keenness of her voice showed that indeed, she had been angling to have a private conversation with me.

"I'm all ears," I said. She smiled. "It is actually a request and I hope you can grant it."

Ada was one of the closest teachers to me since I joined Highworth College about eight months ago. As close as we were, everything between us was official.

I suspected she should be about my age, but one could not be too certain about such a thing. I was twenty-eight years of age. I could be described as young, full of life and vibrant. Now, I wondered the kind of request Ada had in mind.

"Go on," I prompted her.

"Well, it's not much. It's just that right now, I have accommodation challenge. The aunty I'm staying with will, by this weekend, relocate with her husband to Ibafo.

“So, it will be too expensive for me to be coming from Ibafo to Ogba every day. I need a temporary accommodation. I plan to rent accommodation around here, but in the mean time, I need somewhere to stay."

I was full of thought over what she said. But, there was actually no need to think much. The answer to her request was a capital NO.

"Your request will not be granted for many reasons," I stated. "I have a fiancee who, first and foremost, will not accept that inclusion."

Ada's face clouded. "You have a fiancee?" she interjected in surprise.

She laughed shortly.

Was that funny?

"That first time I called you, did you recognize my voice? Did you know who was talking?"

Now, I was quite confused. Did I know her before?

"I didn' know you and I still don't know you, madam," I said, wondering what she was aiming at.

"Are you naturally nice or are you just trying to be nice to me?"

I chuckled. "If you say I'm nice, I'll take that as a compliment. Thanks for the compliment."

"No wonder, Sharon said so much about you."

My heartbeat fluttered.   "You know Sharon?"

She laughed shortly again. "Come on. When you first called her line this morning, I was the one who picked it."

I was aghast. "You were the aunty?"

"Yes, I was the one she called Big Aunty. I asked who you are and I was intrigued by what she said."

"Did you mix my number with the man you met at the supermarket?"

"No," she answered cooly. "Just as you said,  I too was was not in any supermarket this morning."

I was perplexed. Why did she go through all that drama?

"You appear to be an interesting person, and I will like to know you more. You know what? Send me your account details. I will like to send you something for the weekend."

My heart started beating fast. How could a woman I barely knew be saying this?

"Seyi, are you doubting my intentions?" she asked.

 She even remembered my name.

"May be before you take a move, call Sharon and ask of me. You can also confirm this my number from her."

I wanted to tell her that there would be no need for all that, but she had disconnected the line. I sighed. This woman must be an interesting character.

Why did she have to make up the story that she met me at supermarket? Now, she was saying she wanted to send something to me for the weekend.

Just like that! I am not the kind of person who jumps at such an offer, so let me not rush into it. About ten minutes later, my phone rang.

It was Sharon on the line.

"Hello, Sharon."

"Hi, Seyi. Big Aunty just called me now. She said you can ask any question about her and I should give honest answer."

I was intrigued. "I see. First and foremost, who is she to you?"

"She's a younger sister to my mum, so she's a maternal aunt."

I nodded. "I can sense that she wants friendship," I said. "I can easily offer that, but not to a married woman."

There was a pause. "Big Aunty lost her husband in a U.S hospital about two wears ago."

 "Hmn, sorry to hear that."

"Yeah. She has two grown up kids schooling in the U.S. Right now, she's the one managing the estate business which her husband left behind."

I sighed again. "Thanks  for calling, Sharon. I really appreciate."

"You are welcome. See you."

She cut the line.

“For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius for the day, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine o’clock, he saw others standing idle in the marketplace, and he said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right.’ So they went. When he went out again about noon and about three o’clock, he did the same. And about five o’clock he went out and found others standing around, and he said to them, ‘Why are you standing here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You also go into the vineyard.’ When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, ‘Call the laborers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first.’ When those hired about five o’clock came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”

She turned swiftly to stare at me. "And where are you going?" she asked.

"To the sitting-room. I'll sleep on the three-seater."

She looked at me as if I had said a very strange thing. "You are joking, right?"

I shook my head. "That's the best way to go about it. See you in the morning."

I smiled wanly at her and left the bedroom.

In the sitting-room, I tried to make myself as comfortable as possible. If I thought I had dealt with Precious' angle, I was making a big mistake.

She was soon in the sitting, wearing what obviously was a sexy sleeping-wear. She sat on my legs.

"I don't like this funny drama you're acting," she said. "What's the meaning of all this?"

I was confounded. "Is it not better we avoid temptation?"

She looked almost angry. "What temptation? What are you talking about?"

I sat up on the seat, gently making her to sit by my side. "Dear Precious, you know the temptation I'm talking about."

"Are you saying it is a sin for two lovers to be together?"

I shook my head. "I never said anything like that. All I'm saying is we have to be careful and cautious."

As if she did not hear me, she moved close and wrapped her arms around my waist. "Sometimes, I doubt if you love me."

I sighed. "Of course, I do, darling. How could you doubt me?"

"If you really love me, prove it."

She stared at the numbers for several seconds.

"I don't understand all these," she finally said. I decided that I would worry about it later.

Precious had always come around to my place, but she had never slept over. I was therefore surprised when she said she would sleep over tonight.

The relationship had been platonic in which we had agreed that there would be no premarital sex. So far, we had been able to keep to that agreement.

"But, what about your parents? Are they not going to express disappointment that you sleep outside?" I asked.

"Seyi, stop treating me as If I'm still a teenager, for God's sake. Why are you saying this? You are supposed to be glad at my decision, aren't you?"

Really? Was I really supposed to be glad by what she wanted to do? I however kept quiet.

She went to the small kitchen to prepare jollof rice. Thankfully, she had brought all the ingredients that were needed along. Precious, I must say, was good at cooking.

What she cooked was delicious and I wasted no time in commending her. After the meal, she cleared the table and took the plates to the kitchen for washing.

She was a good wife material, I decided. She snuggled to me as we watched movies together. Somehow, I still felt uncomfortable that she would be sleeping in the house. This might sound strange to some people, but that was how pruddish I could be.

She later slept off on the couch. It was a Friday. Since the following day was Saturday and I would not be going to work, I decided to watch movies late into the night.

When I was finally going to sleep, I woke Precious up.

"Time to go to bed," I told her.

We went to the bedroom and she started changing into the sleep-wear she had brought along.

"Okay, have a nice sleep," I said, picking up a pillow.

She turned swiftly to stare at me. "And where are you going?" she asked.
