PORT HARCOURT— Contractors handling projects for the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, in the region, yesterday, staged a peaceful protest at the commission’s head office on Aba Road, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, over alleged non-payment for contracts executed.

Speaking under the aegis of Contractors Association of NDDC, President of the body, Mr Joe Adia, said that most of them were being owed for jobs done between three and five years ago, adding that some of them had even died out of frustration.

He said the protest was to acquaint the new acting Managing Director of the commission, Mrs Ibim Semenitari, of their plight.

He said: “We welcome the new acting Managing Director. We want her to know that the major problem is that contractors have been owed for about five years. The Interim Payment Certificates, IPM, for some of them are missing, all because of the delay in payment. We want President Muhammadu Buhari to know that our major problem is payment.”

He appealed to the Federal Government to cancel all fresh jobs awarded by the previous board, saying that it was no use awarding new jobs when jobs awarded several years ago had not been paid for.

Appealing to the Federal Government to effectively fund the commission, the contractors said government should also endeavour to release accurate amounts budgeted for the commission annually.

“They have awarded projects for 2015 in the budget. We are saying that this should be cancelled. They should focus on payment of contractors. The Federal Government should fund NDDC properly. They will announce a budget for NDDC in billions but at the end of the day, the cash that will be released will be far less. This is not right. They should release what they announce as budgeted.

“Contractors are the people to suffer if anything happens to NDDC. The workers will look for another job. So the acting MD should focus on payment of contractors,” he pleaded.

Mr. Governor Sir, STOPPAGE OF ADMISSION EXERCISE IN OSUN STATE-OWNED POLYTECHNICS AND COLLEGES OF EDUCATION: 14-DAY ULTIMATUM FOR REVERSION The Managements of the State-owned Colleges of Education (Ilesa and Ila- Orangun) and Polytechnics (Iree and Esa-Oke) respectively have put the admission of students for the 2015/2016 academic session on hold under the guise of complying with a directive from the State Government that admission must not be conducted in the next two years. With utmost respect, we believe you would recall that we raised this issue in our letter with reference no. CASUOSTI/15/02/14 dated 11th December, 2015. The confusion caused by the stoppage of the admission exercise has been complicated by the silence of Government on the said letter. Consequently, we are using this medium to demand that Government should come out straight on this issue and withdraw any directive stopping the admission exercise within the next fourteen (14) days to prevent industrial crisis in the sector. Going by the laws establishing the institutions, admission of students and other academic processes are under the purview of the Academic Board of each institution. Academic activities in tertiary institutions should not be administered by political intuition and intrusion, no matter how well-intentioned, without recourse to statutory regulations and institutional autonomy and sanctity. Apart from constituting flagrant breach of the law and institutional due process, any attempt by Government to stop the admission exercise in these schools, inter alia, is totally unacceptable because it: 1. hurts the institutions’ preparation towards the next accreditation exercise, which is due within the next few months; 2. impedes on the institutions’ community service roles; 3. leads to disqualification for interventionist opportunities such as provisions from TETFund which are tied to enrollment; 4. damages institutional reputation and leads to risk of litigation because these institutions have advertised the admission and collected application fees from would-be students; 5. will leave the large number of students under the preliminary programmes stranded as their chance of transition to Year 1 class is so abruptly nullified; 6. opens wide room for suspicion and speculation of clandestine move by Government to scrap the institutions through the back-door and thus throw staffers out of job; 7. is bound to cause about 50% cut in each institution’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) by which Government is relieved of the running costs and payment of unconsolidated allowances of staff; 8. will leave the two State Polytechnics with no student at all and the two Colleges of Education with only the last one-thirds of their students, come October 2016. We remain confident in your belief in the rule of law and due process. It is therefore our hope that this issue and those raised in our preceding letter would be given prompt attention in the interest of all stakeholders in the State’s public tertiary education sector. achievement at the Beijing 2008 Olympics can be
surpassed.

Siasia, a veteran of football tournaments of sorts, won
a silver medal at the 2008 Games, and after earning
the right to be at the 2016 Games in Brazil, the
former Super Eagles striker stated that with hard work
Nigeria can win the gold.


“I was coach of Nigeria during the Olympic Games in
Beijing in 2008, when we reached the final, and in
2016 we will aim to do more than reaching the final
by winning the (gold) medal,” Siasia said. Nigeria
won the men soccer gold at the 1996 Olympic Games
in Atlanta USA and came to repeating the feat in
Beijing, China.


But Lionel Messi and Angel d Maria combined to score
the only goal of the match and handed Argentina
the gold. Nigeria U-23 players gave a good account of
themselves in that match, much to the appreciation of
Argentina legend Diego Maradona.


Meanwhile the Dutch coach who led Nigeria to the
gold in Atlanta’96 Johannes Bonfrere has backed
Siasia to do well in Rio 2016.


“He has done well with the youth sides in the past
and his experience will be vital for Nigeria in Brazil.
“But there are a lot of things that will still come into
play, like getting a good draw and preparing well for
the competition. “If they are lucky and get things
right, they can win it again.’’

Jose Mourinho’s future as Chelsea manager
is in suspense over his failure to lift the team
out of their alarming slump, according to
British press reports on Wednesday.
