Port Harcourt - Nigeria’s Super Eagles
defeated Swaziland
2-0 in a tension filled 2018 World Cup
qualifier played in
Port Harcourt.
After a tensed first half, second half goals
from Moses
Simon and Efe Ambrose ensured Nigeria
qualified for the
group stage of the qualifiers, after the first
leg had ended
0-0 on Friday.
Odion Ighalo’s pass was well positioned for
Moses Simon,
who’s shot was saved by Swaziland
goalkeeper in the 11th
minute but Swaziland was close to take the
lead in the
33rd minute when a well-taken cross could
not be properly
dealt with as Sandile Hlatjwako hit the ball
over the bar.
The first half was to end in a goalless draw
after both
teams have given their best, maybe a
dressing room pep
talk will make the difference after the break.
On return from the break, Igbonu missed a
clear chance as
he fired wide from a close range.
Nigeria won a freekick close to the edge of
the box, and
Moses Simon stepped up to coolly slot the
ball into the net
in the 51st minute to put Nigeria ahead.
Nigeria continue to press forward but
Igbonu was booked
in the 55th minute for an infringement, and
so was Efe
Ambrose for a foul on Hlatjwako eight
minutes later.
The huge fans at the stands had to force
coach Sunday
Oliseh to make substitution before Obafemi
Martins was
then introduced for Ahmed Musa in the 74th
minute as the
Super Eagles seek another goal to be safe
after Swaziland
had made a second change. Simon was later stretchered off after sustaining an injury, and was replaced with Bassey Ezekiel as the tense game enters its final ten minutes. Swaziland would have gotten an equalizer in the 81st minute only if Njabulo Ndlovu's effort was not saved by goalkeeper Carl Ikeme, before Efe Ambrose applied his right foot from Igbonu’s freekick to slot in Nigeria’s second goal with just three minutes left on the clock. Phumlani was sent off for a second yellow after a rough tackle on Ogenyi Onazi, and the three minutes added time failed to produce another goal for either side. |

A woman is bound to get mixed signals a man she has a
crush on, especially if he pays her a bit of attention.
She’s bound to misread these signals as a response from
the man she’s hugely attracted to, though he doesn’t feel
the same way. Inspired by Times of India, here are few signs women often misinterpret 1. He tells you everything about himself: He may confide in you because he feels he can trust you to keep his secret safe. It doesn’t mean he wants to date you. 2. He says you both have a lot in common: Like minds attract, so it’s unusual to have common interest with him. Don not read too much meaning into the similarities 3. He loves to tease you: People often say it means he likes you, but it’s advisable to wait and see how he’s like with other females. 4. He laughs at your jokes: Doesn’t matter if they are funny or not. It still doesn’t mean he actually interested. 5. He’s always there for you: The fact a man is always at your beck and call doesn’t mean he wants to date you. He may just be doing these favors as a friend. 6. He says he wants ‘someone like you’: This could mean he like you. But saying he wants ‘someone like you’ may mean he wants someone else with your attributes. 7. He’s always gives a listening ear: He may just be a friend trying to ease your stress by listening to you rant. Just the same way one of your closest friends would. |

LAGOS—Barely 24 hours after the Federal cabinet was inaugurated, All Progressives Congress, APC, national leader and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has assured Nigerians and the global community that the nation was being managed by credible personalities that will restore the glory of Nigeria. Osun State Governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola; APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode By Olasunkanmi Akoni & Monsur Olowoopejo LAGOS—Barely 24 hours after the Federal cabinet was inaugurated, All Progressives Congress, APC, national leader and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has assured Nigerians and the global community that the nation was being managed by credible personalities that will restore the glory of Nigeria. This came even as Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State launched the Mile 12-Ikorodu Road expansion and Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, operation with 434 buses for the pilot scheme. The occasion was graced by prominent personalities led by Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and top government functionaries, traditional rulers, market women, among others. Tinubu told the large crowd at the launch of the bus scheme: “We will continue to develop this country to compete with the superpowers. When we started the urban renewal, they thought that we were lost and had no vision. But they do not know about the planning period that is required to modernize any decay in government. “Today, it is applicable to President Muhammadu Buhari. The planning period that it is taking to re-engineer and re- design the governance of Nigeria was the same method they were blaming us for then. “They called me ‘go slow’ and at that time, I was complaining about the paucity of funds. “Oil was selling at about $11 per barrel and I said that we will be out of it soon and people said that I should go and do my plan and stop the lamentation . “But my cabinet, including Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State and the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, were part of that dream and the vision for the mission to reclaim and redevelop Lagos State.” Says Fashola ‘ll succeed Tinubu said: “Leadership is about how many other leaders one is able to discover to do great things for the country. We deserve what we are getting in Lagos; success, continuity and good governance. “For instance, Ambode did not lobby for the seat of Lagos, but we discovered him. I am now a great grandfather. “You could see that when the announcement was made yesterday, Lagos State took the front seat in Fashola and we believe that he will succeed and many of them, too. Nigeria is now in good hands.” In his brief address at the event, Ambode said his government was committed to improving the transportation network in a bid to reduce traffic and attract investors to the state, basically to fund the strategic master plan. The governor said: “The plan is already being implemented. It is a 30-year plan that will deliver an integrated transport system with six rail lines, one mono- rail, 14 BRT corridors and 26 developed water routes. “We are working towards commencing operation of the first phase of the blue line rail project in the next 12 months. “The challenges are daunting, but we will not be discouraged. We are committed to turning the challenges to opportunities. “We will ride on them to create a future that residents of Lagos will be proud of.” |
Governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC Prince Abubakar Audu has promised the people of Yagba West Local Government Area that he would end the alleged diversion of revenue meant for grassroots development. He has also pledged to put an end to the alleged payment of only 25 percent of salaries to local government workers if elected. He accused the state government of diverting the revenue of the Local Government Councils into private pockets, Audu at a rally in Yagba West assured that an APC government will ensure that workers are promptly paid. Audu said: “The PDP government has failed Kogi people. No good roads, no water, no healthcare, no salaries, yet, they are clamouring for re-election. Will you re-elect a failure? Will you re-elect the government that is stealing your salaries? Will you re-elect the government that has failed in giving you social amenities? Join hands with the APC to bring back the glory of our dear state. “During my time as governor of the state, all of you saw what we did. What I did in four years could not be matched by the twelve years of PDP. They have destroyed all the legacies I created. They are only interested in embezzling the resources of the state. Vote them out on November 21 so that we can reinvent our state and bring development to our people”. Also speaking at the rally, Audu’s running mate, Mr. James Faleke said Audu is key to the development of Kogi. The rally was graced by party chieftains, state and federal legislators as well as party supporters. |

We take a look at some of this players knocking at the door of the Senior National team with respect to a possible debut in the Nigerian National team - the Super Eagles. ISAAC SUCCESS The lethal forward who plays for Granada in Spain is certainly one of those players who may just force their way into the Super Eagles soonest. At the U-17 level, he scored 7 Goals in 5 matches at the African U-17 Championship in Morocco in 2013. He followed it up with a goal against Mexico in the 6-1 drubbing of the North Americans. Isaac Success have a good understanding with Iheanacho in attack as he showed vision and composure in setting up Iheanacho two goals in that game (against Mexico). In the second game against Sweden he showed his class as he connected well from Iheanacho’s pass from midfield to score a brilliant goal. What a goal it was, but he unfortunately got injured and had to be replaced by Taiwo Awoniyi. He missed the U-20 African Championship held in Senegal due to club engagement and was on hand to bang in goals against Brazil and North Korea (from a fight angle). At club level he contributed in helping Granada stay on in the Spanish league and was on target against Valencia in their 1-1 draw last season. He is tall and strong and can withstand pressure from defender. This season he had already been impressive for Granada particularly in the match against Sporting Gijon were he scored a brilliant curling goal in that six goal thriller which ended 3-3. As they say see is believing, you can watch that goal here . For me he is Nigeria Samuel Etos’o due to his finishing prowess, a chance at the National team beckons very soon for Isaac success. MUSA MOHAMMED The Ever present captain of the U-17 and U-20 team Musa Mohammed who was adjusted as a player of Coach Manu Garba’s legacy and total football have made a case for inclusion at the senior level with impressive performance at the Junior cadet Championship. He finished as the top scorer at the U-20 African championship in Senegal with 4 goals to his name (all from the penalty spot). His leadership on the pitch was second to none. He inspired his teammate all through and was ever ready and energetic running down the right flank attacking and defender all together. Though there was some cases at the U-23 team when he allegedly left the camp without Coach Siasia’s consent but he have put that aside and secured a club in Europe (Istanbul Basaksehir FK), that move will surely do the Nigerian good and prepare him for a place he rightfully belongs to in the National Team. KELECHI IHEANACHO Kelechi Iheanacho is one player who deserved a call up to the National team right from day one. In October 2013 the young star announced his arrival to the football world with world class performance against Mexico, scoring four as the Golden Eagles swept apart the North Americans in an exemplary fashion with a massive 6-1 victory. From the first to the last goal was all world class and eye catching, that makes you wonder where such a player is coming from. His calmness for the second goal was sumptuous for a young lad at that age. He was at the right place at the right time to finish for his first goal of the game, connecting well from Isaac success pass and guiding it beyond the Mexico’s goal. He underlined his predatory instinct with a thunder bolt for the hat-trick and added the fourth goal to cap off a magnificent performance on that faithfully day. At the U-20 his impact was limited to the bench but even on the bench the young star was making case for himself as the camera was hovering all around him especially in the Germany/ Nigeria match. He was criticized for poor performance that lead to his bench role in U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in June but that was not how bad it was for the special player Iheanacho. It is always normal and a regular stuff in Nigerian football that if results are not positive for our National teams we look for scapegoat to heap the blame on, many at times to Mikel, sometimes to Yobo as they labeled him “calamity Yobo” but in this case in 4-2 loss to the Brazilian team Iheanacho took the blame in the game even when he was one of our best performer with an assist for Yahaya’s goal. He struck the bar with a left foot curler that left the Brazil Goalie in total disarray and had gone on to Manchester City to write his name in the history book. In the Youth Team of Man.City he scored a wonder individual goal against Man United U-21side which was adjusted as the best goal. He followed that up with more goals with led to his promotion to the senior side and he repaid the faith of his manager with the winning goal at Crystal palace to hand all three points to City as he was on hand to poach the ball beyond the goal- keeper. He featured in the big game of the week between Man-City and Manchester United come off the bench for Bony Wilfred .The young lad at 18 became the first City player to score in the Premier League. As the clock ticks the 19 years old is getting ever ready for his maiden debut in the Super Eagles which is a step in the right direction as Coach Sunday Oliseh’s team, the Super Eagles are in dire need of options and depth within the team. KINGSLEY SOKARI] The young midfielder has shown that he has all it takes to play for the Super Eagles. At the U-20 level he was instrumental to the team as he replaced injured teammate Ifeanyi Mathew in midfield and proved a valuable asset to the team. In the second game against North Konea in the U-20 World Cup he struck a bullet of a goal from outside the area to show a glimpse of his quality. Even Coach Kadiri Ikhana praised the midfielder and said that the best is yet to come from Sokari. Ikhana knows the player well as Sokari bosses his midfield at Enyimba International. His quality and talent is not in doubt and must be utilized in the main Super Eagles set up. His wonderful performance at the U-20 level earned him a reported move to Tunisian giants Esperance, but the move fell through as both parties did not conform to the paper work signed for the deal. He came back to Enyimba and continue his good form for the team and have been rewarded with the Number 10 shirt as he dictated proceedings for Enyimba in the middle of the park. He was instrument to Mfon Udoh goal heroics in the league last term and played a key role in helping Enyimba win the league this season. At the U-23 All African Game he scored a sweet chipping goal against Ghana to cap off a wonderful build up play which is characteristics of Samson Siasia’s teams. His presence also will promote competition in midfield as the Eagles are undergoing a transition into a solid team. All said and done the time is now to give Sokari a chance to showcase his talent and add quality to the Super Eagles and not just the fringe role he was given against South Africa Earlier in March. |
