Chapter 1: The Fire That Split Us October 3, 1992 I was born in Kwara state under a sky choked with harmattan dust, the kind that turns the world sepia and sticks to the back of the throat. My mother always said it was a sign— “Olorun gave you tough skin from day one.” The Apartment (Age 7–9) The rented apartment in Ilorin was a cracked concrete box split into two halves: the landlord’s family upstairs with their satellite TV and generator hum, my family downstairs with its peeling walls, and the kerosene stove that coughed black smoke. My father called it “temporary,” but three years later, the twins’ crayon scribbles still marked the doorframe where they measured their growth. I shared a room with my two elder sisters, Asake and Alake —teenagers who rolled their eyes at my antics but let me cling to them during thunderstorms. My mother, a primary school teacher with a voice that could silence a marketplace, ruled the home with a wooden ruler. My father, unemployed since he lost his job at the bank, spent his days smoking brown London cigarettes in the courtyard, staring at the landlord’s Mercedes like it owed him answers. The Fights Their arguments began as whispers: “Bola, how can a man sit while his wife feeds the children?” “You think I enjoy this, Adesola? Do I look like a fool to you?” The twins would hide under the dining table, their small hands pressed over their ears. Alake would drag me to the backyard, where she’d teach me curse words in Yoruba to shout at the chickens. But I have always listened. I learned early that silence is the loudest language. The Fire The fire started on a Tuesday. The landlord’s son, a boy with a PlayStation and no sense, had been experimenting with matches in the upstairs parlor. By the time the smoke clawed through the ceiling, my mother was already herding me outside, her teacher’s register clutched to her chest like a shield. No one died. No one even burned. But the landlord’s wife screamed loud enough to summon three churches’ worth of prayer warriors. They stood in the street, their white garments glowing in the dusk, as the firemen hosed down the building. The landlord spat at my father’s feet. “This is God’s judgment for your laziness,” he hissed. My father said nothing. He just stood there, ash settling on his shoulders like snow. The Separation My mother refused to return to my paternal grandfather’s house—the same house she’d fled after her wedding, where she is not always comfortable. “We’ll go to my father’s compound,” she declared, stuffing school uniforms into a Ghana-must-go bag. “I won’t raise my children in that house.” My father didn’t fight her. He kissed the twins’ foreheads, handed Alake a 50-naira note for “pure water,” and left with only a frayed briefcase. I watched him walk down his Road; his shoulders hunched as if carrying the weight of the burnt apartment. Ten minutes away, they said. Ten minutes, but the distance felt infinite. The Grandfather’s House My maternal grandfather’s compound in Agodi Gate was a fading relic—cracked terraces, a guava tree sagging with fruit, and the smell of camphor clinging to every room. The twins slept on a mattress in your grandfather’s study, where his old veterinary textbooks loomed like sentinels. Alake and Asake became miniature mothers, boiling garri on the stove and plaiting the twins’ hair into tight braids. My father came every night. He’d arrive after sunset, reeking of beer and cigarettes, clutching a plastic bag of suya or puff-puff. “See how tall you’re growing!” he’d say, ruffling my hair. But his eyes were hollow, his jokes too loud. Some nights, he’d slump onto the porch steps and stare at his phone, scrolling through contacts that never called back. My mother would bring him a bowl of eba, her silence sharper than words. The school At Okesuna Primary School, I was both prince and pariah. My mother’s ruler cracked twice as hard when I forgot my homework, and the boys snickered when she called me “omo mi” in front of the class. But there was power in it, too—in a manner she would defend me if someone stole my lunch, her voice booming, “You think because his father isn’t here, you can bully him?” I hated the twins for their innocence. They skipped through the school gates, oblivious to the whispers: “Their father drinks… Their mother sold her wedding beads last week…” But there were mercies. The way my mother’s stern face softened when I aced a spelling test. The nights my father stayed sober, teaching me to whistle through my teeth or fold a paper boat. The smell of Alake’s Diane cream as she braided her hair, her fingers gentle. “You’re the man of the house now,” she’d say, half-mocking, half-serious. The Empty Space I never blamed my father. Not really. I saw how his hands shook when he counted the naira notes my mother gave him, how he’d flinch when motorcycles backfired. But I ached for the lessons other boys got—how to tie a tie, how to talk to girls, how to be a man. He tried, in his way. Once, he brought me a second-hand football, deflated and scuffed. “Next week, we’ll play,” he promised. I waited. He forgot. I stored these hungers in my bones, let them harden into something like strength. ________________________________________ Author’s Note This chapter is for the fathers who tried. For the mothers who became lions. For the children who grew up in the cracks. |

[quote author=Tuuns post=81526315]See an experienced hepatologists. I see 3 good ones. Most doctors or GP know very little about hepatitis B. I can boldly say I know more about hepatitis b than 80% of doctors. And it is not limited to Nigeria. I am just a patient combing every information on how to get rid of the disease. *Don't use herbal medicines or ill-prescribed drugs, you may damage your liver* [/quote D |
