Agriculture › Re: Why Most Agri Business Fail by grabben: 3:58pm On Jan 22, 2018 |
maxipharo: Getting into a new business is a milestone as you have triumph the problem deciding what line of business to engage in and kick starting it. However, studies have shown that sustaining business to successfully go through transition at different stages of growth have been more daunting challenge than starting them. Many agribusiness fail today because of lack of foresight to implement change at the appropriate time as the business runs. To be a successful agripreneur, you need to able to move your business from one stage to another, so as to create wealth and build up sustainably. Generally planning, decision making, management, business performance evaluation, self-discipline, customer service and retention strategy, financing the business and handling of stress and pressure are implicated in the actualization of success or not of a business. However imperative causes of why most agribusiness fail and possible solutions would be pointed out in this post: Bad business idea No business idea is actually bad in itself, but a particular business idea can be circumstantially good for one while it is bad for another. Nevertheless, business decisions should be based upon factors that provide one with comparative advantage to engage in a particular business and not the other. Comparative advantage for a business could be in form of knowledge, skill and availability of the necessary resources to start-up and grow the business; which could all be evaluated by a business plan to evaluate the technical and economic viability of a business idea than starting up a business on the basis of how lucrative it seems elsewhere or your passion which cause you affinity to a business as the business would require more than and not only your passion to sustainably create wealth for you. Cash problem/fund problem Predominant insufficient and at times total lack of fund for your business can fail the business, and with a worsening situation with most agribusiness as cash plans are required and advised to be made to cover a full production cycle before start. Pitching the business with confidence to investors, banks and people who can help to provide fund adequately for the business can be a solution, but it is important to understand that “small and available” funds could be judiciously invested and grown into wealth. Another dimension of cash being a problem for agribusiness is the mismanagement of the cash flow of the business. Effectively managing cash flow is important for any agripreneur by sacrificing enjoyment until he/she reaches a comfortable stage before reaping the fruits of the labour, as it is easy to get side tracked by things that seems to be important but have little to do with achieving your original target for your business. Self-discipline is solution to this, so as to achieve success in business. Managerial inexperience/incompetence Professional management is key to successful agribusiness venture. Inexperience and incompetence of management affects planning, decision making, business performance evaluation which are important to sustain and grow a business. Most agribusiness require high precision in decision making to cope to the high risk and uncertainty nature of the business. Hence, agribusiness management should be well equipped with the technical, emotional and virtue to get the business started and grow. Moreso, while the business grow, competencies expected from the management to sustain growth. Often the basic challenge is in transition from owner to leader, having the right business leadership skills and self-discipline growth comes with increase in employee size, income and Challenges to maintain a narrow strategic focus. Lack of customer focus Customers are integral part of business. A business with all excellent start-up requirement without customer consideration is bound to fail, hence the customers are evaluated in terms of quantity and quality during the business planning process to ensure the future of the business. Setting business target for yourself and your employees who should be focused on increasing the number of customer through improved customer service is key to success for your business. Excellent customer delivery is not an option because it breeds trust, reliability, love, patience, fairness and edge in competition. If your immediate resources are unable to manage a large client base, identify and focus on segment for which the most value can be created in order to optimize your returns. It has been proven time and again, that it is far cheaper to retain an existing customer than it is to acquire a new one, however watch out for customers with buying habits that are detrimental to the success of the business. http://www.agricincome.com/whyagric-business-fail/ Click on the first link on my signature to master the contemporary dynamics of export trade to avoid being defrauded by the foreign buyers of your agricultural products. Agriculture › Re: How Can We EXPORT Our Agro PRODUCTS. by grabben: 3:24pm On Jan 22, 2018 |
castruccio: Hello... sorry i saw this late but i thkink the little information i will share here may be help ful
Exportation of your agro produce is not difficult at all. I will say all you may need to know as time goes on is the export language but that is not a problem.
What I am about to say here does not need you to register with NEPC or having a company with CAC registration
All you need to do is to register with AMEN Association of Micro Entrepreneurs of Nigeria. Why will you do this? This is because some agro commodities may need little processing, so you will have access to their machinery to process your agro commodities.
Another fact why you should register is, in the case of nafdac and son number, you can get that easily through them.
Please note that to register with AMEN is so easy and cheap as they will welcome you.
Then what you must have to do is to look for buyers. (I am going to satisfy this area soon.... watch out for afiaafrika.com and afiaafrika.com.ng ) buyers for your agro commodities are not difficult to find with the use of gthe internet. Infact I have a collection of african restaurants and other industries in UK and the U.S. if you them please give your email address.
Then you can also use the internet as a leverage to get buyers abroad.
Hope this answers your questions, if it does'nt then ask me any questions,
N.B- if you are a farmer, please watch out for afiaafrika.com.ng while exporters and food processors should watch out for afiaafrika.com
Thanks Learning how to export products to foreign countries is very easy. You do not need to attend a seminar to learn it. Just click on the first link on my signature for more information. |

Agriculture › Re: Cashew Farming, Lucrative And Long Lasting! by grabben: 3:12pm On Jan 22, 2018 |
vibrant40: Cashew exportation is growing in Nigeria as we got a news not quite long that Nigeria is now fourth on the ladder of countries exporting the cashew nut. This farming I tag stress free farming considering the other agro allied business. Making a research on this I got to know that you can make a whopping 8 million naira per year on just an acre of land of cashew trees. Only what you need is to be patient with time. Because your patience will surely be rewarded. As a young Nigerian my advice is let's not allow those vast land in our villages waste in vain. Let's make the sacrifice of planting some cashew tree on them now as it will not be bad to go home for a month and come back with some millions! Yes, cashew farming will become lucrative only when you learn how to export the cashew nuts to foreign countries. Learning the process of cashew nuts export trade is very easy. Agriculture › Re: Nigeria Agriculture Weekly News Review by grabben: 3:07pm On Jan 22, 2018 |
BrandSpurNG: There are Agro Nigeria top picks for the week…
Osinbajo heads committee on herders-farmers clashes
For the second week running, events in the agricultural space have been dominated by issues surrounding the herder-farmer clashes.
So, it came as a relief when the Federal Government, during its National Economic Council Meeting, inaugurated a (Working) Committee of nine governors to address and resolve the persistent crises. The Committee, which has the governors of Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, Benue, Taraba, Edo, Plateau, Ebonyi and Oyo States as members, is chaired by the Vice-President.
Nigeria to host ECOWAS conference on farmers-herders clashes
Still tracking the Farmer-Herder imbroglio, the Nigerian government will in February host a conference of the member states of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), aimed at finding permanent solutions to the clashes which have spread to other parts of the West African sub-region. Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau who stated this after a meeting with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Marcel De Souza at the Commission’ Secretariat in Abuja, noted that the conference would also explore the relationship between the ECOWAS Protocol on Free Movement, the proliferation of small arms and light weapons, and trans-border criminal activities.
Adamawa Govt. registers 64 grazing reserves
States have also been busy at it. The Adamawa state government has registered 64 grazing reserves across the state. Commissioner for Livestock Production in the state, Isah Salihu, who stated this in Yola said 30 of the grazing reserves had been gazetted.
Kogi endorses FG’s cattle colony as more states reject proposal
In Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Belloopenly endorsed plans by the Federal Government to establish cattle colonies, saying his state is ready to be the pioneer testing ground for the scheme.
He assured farmers and people of the state that the policy would be beneficial to them, adding that the state would organize a series of stakeholders’ engagement to sensitize the people, farmers, cattle breeders and other stakeholders on the implementation of the new policy.
However, there were bumps in the road, as the move to set up cattle colonies met with opposition from the governments of Benue, Taraba, Ekiti, Abia, Ebonyi, and Imo States. While the government in Ondo plans to revive ranches in the state, Oyo, Edo and Kwara State Governments have said they will consult widely before reaching decisions on cattle colonies.
Establish livestock ministry, revive grazing reserves – Herdsmen tell FG
In a related development, the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) has called on the Federal Government to establish a Ministry of Livestock Development to cater for the livestock industry and focus on reviving the existing grazing reserves across the country instead of establishing cattle colonies. The group expressed their regret that the government had over the years neglected the 415 grazing reserves covering about three million hectares of land across the country.
AgroNigeria believes that all hands must be on deck to find lasting solutions to the incessant clashes which could hinder Nigeria’s food security and agricultural production. The Federal and State Governments must act decisively and come up with favorable solutions thereto. We are also of the opinion that there is no silver bullet in this regard.
And on to regional cooperation…
AU seeks partnership with Nigeria to end seeds importation
The African Union, (AU) has called for a partnership with Nigeria to develop Africa’s seeds industry with a view to ending the importation of seeds on the continent. Executive Director, AfricaSeeds, Dr. Kouame Miezan, who made the call at a meeting with the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, in Abuja on Tuesday, said the organization was seeking the partnership given Nigeria’s primal position in seeds production in West Africa.
And from across the States…
Fire razes 4000 palm trees, 1000 others in Plateau
A fire incident has destroyed more than 4000 palm trees in an oil palm plantation in Sabon-Gida, Langtang South Local Government of Plateau State. The fire which raged at the weekend, also destroyed 500 cashew trees, 200 improved varieties of mango trees, oil palm seedlings, among other plants.
Fire destroys 46 silos, 36 houses, livestock in Jigawa
Similarly, the Police in Jigawa State on Monday confirmed that a fire incident, destroyed 46 silos, 36 houses and killed 40 goats and sheep in Abanderi village of Dutse Local Government Area of the state. The spokesman for the Police Command in Jigawa, DSP Abdu Jinjiri, who stated this in Dutse said the fire, suspected to have been caused by bush burning, started at about 5 a.m.
It is our view that mass sensitization needs to be carried out in a bid to educate the public on the dangers inherent in bush burning, particularly during the dry season.
We also brought you reports on efforts to strengthen the capacity of farmers both at the federal and state levels.
CBN to support tomato, cocoa, palm oil production this year
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has said it will massively support farmers to boost the production of tomato, cocoa and palm oil across the country in 2018. CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who stated this during a visit to the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh in Abuja, on Wednesday said the move was in line with Federal Government’s quest to attain food self-sufficiency and reduce food imports.
Dry season farming: Sokoto Govt spends N3.4bn on fertilizer
The Sokoto State Government has spent a total of N3.4 billion on the procurement of 833 trucks of fertilizer for distribution to farmers during the dry season farming in the state. State Commissioner for Agriculture, Umaru Nagwari, who stated this in Sokoto, shortly after defending the ministry’s 2018 budget proposal, before the state House of Assembly Committee on Agriculture on Thursday said the state government had prioritized agriculture.
5,253 rice, wheat farmers benefit from FADAMA projects in Anambra
A total of 5,253 rice and wheat farmers in Anambra benefited from the various intervention schemes of the FADAMA III project last year. Project Coordinator of FADAMA in Anambra, Mr. Chucks Egbueh, who stated this today in Awka said 4,000 of the farmers were into rice production while 1,253 others were into cassava production.
Poultry farming: Ondo Govt, Agric institute to train 18,000 youths
In Ondo State, the government says it is partnering with the Federal College of Agriculture, Akure (FECA) to train 18,000 youths in poultry farming to facilitate job creation for the youths through agriculture.
Agribusiness: FG to train 3m women, youths this year
Retaining the sub-national focus, we hear that the Federal Government has concluded plans to train three million rural youths and women across the country in Agribusiness, this year.
Director, Extension Services of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Karima Babangida who stated this, Tuesday said the government would achieve this through its Livelihood Improvement Family Enterprise (LIFE) Programme which also aims at equipping beneficiaries with capacity enhancing skills.
Yobe Govt. distributes fishing equipment to farmers
In Yobe State, the Government has distributed canoes and fishing materials worth N24.6 million to 74 fishing households in 10 Local Government Areas to boost fishing and create jobs in the state. At the distribution exercise in Gashua, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam noted that the equipment would create employment, encourage wealth creation and economic empowerment for the beneficiaries.
Nigeria’s Agric sector witnessing steady growth-Buhari
We can only draw attention to the need to ensure that such interventions by governments, donor agencies and development partners must be properly structured to maximize visible impact on the people. There are too many reports of handouts in all directions and one hopes that Nigerians are truly benefiting.
That sums up AgroNigeria for last week.

Agriculture › Re: Cashew Nuts Trading.. What You Need To Know. by grabben: 3:40pm On Jan 17, 2018 |
lomzy1: CASHEW NUTS TRADING.. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW.
CASHEW NUT is an agro export crop. Though active to South America, it is cultivated in some parts of West, Middlebelt and Eastern Nigeria. Areas like Ogbomosho, Ilorin, Oyo, Anyigba, Enugu, Lafia, Keffi etc. The cashew nut tree is mostly cultivated for its nuts: the raw cashew nut is gray in color with about 3mm thick shell, inside this shell is the edible kernel covered by a light brown skin. It is either exported as raw cashew nut, i.e. in-shell or as processed cashew nut kernel in special packaging. Most raw cashew nut is exported to India and Vietnam while the processed cashew kernel is exported to Europe and America being the largest consumer in the world. The crop season in Nigeria is from February - May. But trading is usually all year round, some traders usually store the raw cashew nuts and sell when it is out of season and scarce.
HANDLING. A raw cashew nut that looks good on the outside may have bad kernel inside. The yield of the kernels, percentage of defective, average size of the nuts and moisture content are used to determine the quality of the nuts, which usually determines the price a buyer may offer for any raw cashew nut. Hence effort should be made to improve or conserve the expected good quality derived from proper handling.
THE FOLLOWING GOOD PRACTISE CAN HELP TO IMPROVE QUALITY OF CASHEW NUTS.
Do not harvest or pluck unripe cashew nuts because the kernel may be shriveled or immature. Hence, only mature and ripe cashew nuts should be harvested and this be done daily.
Do not let the nuts remain on the ground for more than a day before gathering to avoid long contact with soil moisture, sprouting and deterioration e.g. decay.
Sundry the harvested nuts as soon as possible for two or three days depending on the intensity of the sun.
Sundry on a clean surface and should be lightly spread (not higher than 3 inches) and turned regularly to allow uniform dryness.
Do not expose dry cashew nuts to moisture. This is a major requirement for agricultural commodities.
Use only jute bags to bag raw cashew nuts. Do not heap it un-bagged or in plastic containers to avoid deterioration especially if not properly dried.
Do not bag it in poly-propylene bags.
QUALITY STANDARD. Cashew nuts meant for export must be thoroughly dry and reasonably free from extraneous matter such as sticks, stalks and other vegetable matter other than cashew nuts. It must also be free from stones.
Total impurities (stones, sticks, stalks and other vegetable matter) shall not exceed 0.5% of 1kg sample analyzed. NUT COUNTS: 170 – 180 ……………….. EXCELLENT 181 – 190 ……………….. VERY GOOD 191 – 200 ……………….. GOOD 201 – 210 ……………….. MIDDLE 211 – 220 ………………. LOW MIDDLE 221 – 230 ………………. LIMIT ACCEPTABLE ABOVE 230 ………………. POOR. Note: 170 – 210 nut count is usually the benchmark for exporting raw cashew nuts. But some importers may not be willing to buy RCN that is above 200 nut counts. In Nigeria, the nut count per 1kg sample varies from zone to zone. While zones like Ogbomosho has between 170 and 180/185, kogi – 190 to 205/210, ondo – 190 to 205/210, Ilorin – 190 to 205, lafia/keffi – 200 to 210, etc.
MOISTURE. Exportable quality shall not be more than 10%. You have to make sure the raw cashew nuts are properly sundried and the moisture content must be properly analyzed.
KERNEL OUT-TURN RATION (KOR) It is the quality of good nut we get from 80kg of raw cashew nuts. The count is in pound per 80kg. KOR REMARK 48 – 55 EXCELLENT 45 – 47 GOOD 40 – 44 AVERAGE BELOW 40 LOW/POOR
DEFECTIVES Diseased or mouldy – shall include all nuts which when cut reveal the presence of fungi growth or a milky patch or a spread of brown or black spot on the split kernel. This is often caused by high moisture for several days prior to proper dryings, wrong packing and improper storage.
BROWN RANCID ROTTEN (BRR) – shall include all brown, rancid, rotten and discolored kernels which are light yellowish in color. This is caused by similar factors listed above.
VOID – these are nuts which show absence of kernel, emptiness or absence of a kernel of useful size. This is probably caused by natural malformation.
IMMATURE/SHRIVELED – shall include all nuts which when cut contain space between the kernel and the shell, shrink or contain kernel that is not fully developed. This is caused by harvesting immature nuts.
SPOTTED – shall include all nuts which show the presence of a black or brown spot on the kernel. This is caused by insect bite at the early stages of the development of the nuts.
INSECT DAMAGE (WEEVILLED) – shall include all cashew nuts which when cut show a state of insect attack or weevilled or presence of bead-like or powdery particles. Poor storage condition is responsible for this.
CHECK TEST FOR QUALITY Carrying out a quality check test on cashew nuts like every other agricultural export produce begins with proper sampling. Samples shall be drawn from not less than 30% of consignment, sample shall be properly mixed, reduced and from which 1kg sample is drawn for analysis which include moisture, nut count, defectives and finally KOR.
QUALITY IMPROVEMENT METHODS: The quality of a bad cashew nut consignment can be improved by hand picking.
HAND PICKING – means picking or removing all suspected cashew nuts such as very small nuts, light weight nuts apparently rotten, broken or wounded nuts out of the consignment.

The association said Nigeria produced 220,000 metric tonnes of cashew nuts out of World’s total of 2.1 million tonnes last year, adding that the country exported 120,000 metric tonnes in the year under review.
NCAN President, Tola Fasheru who stated this in Abuja, Thursday when he visited the Minister of State for Industry, Trade and Investment, Ms. Aisha Abubakar also revealed that cashew farmers in the country earned N123 billion ($402 million) from the export of cashew last year.
