Misterone:
You guys like thinking like kids! So you expect the CBN to be pilling up dollars while people are in need of it? Who saves when his family is hungry! Only a fool does that.

You don't need to be rude to express your point.

What do you know about economics? What caused the Mexican crisis of 1994, the Thai collapse and contagion of 1996, that of Indonesia in 1997, Brazil in 1999 etc? Provide answers

Central banks aren't God. If they mess things up, everyone will die of starvation.

Yes, people need to buy things but not to the point of depleting the reserves. One of the purpose of a floating exchange is to create flexibility in demand for forex based on the quantity available.

If demand is strong, your currency depreciates making it costlier and less affordable, eventually leading to reduced demand for forex..

A weaker currency encourages exports and a desire to earn dollars, which will help add to the reserves.

The demand for forex to "buy things" using your phrase is therefore based on the value of your currency.

Charles Soludo said that the $60bn reserves built during his time in office was by keeping the Naira artificially weak.

In 2012, the IMF advised the then CBN governor to devalue the Naira, in order to reduce pressure on the Naira.

Had he done so, the foreign reserves by 2015 would have been at least $60bn.

Rather than praise this development, it should be queried.

The foreign reserves recently went down by $900m. Would a stronger Naira not lead to an increase for Dollars, simply adding more pressure to the foreign reserves?

Many things could be accountable for this.

I suspect its because the Naira is overvalued or that monetary policy is still loose. There is the huge strain of paying for petrol subsidy which is now enormous.

In addition, the second to rhe last paragraph of the article is also very instructive. Rebuilfing the economt after a brutal 8 years under Buhari would be challenging. The previous government ran it aground.

Government needs to do more to win investor confidence.

I feel cutting corporate taxes to 15% or less would lead to a spike in investor confidence. It should also announce an ambitious privatization and commercialization plan that would cover the 4 international airports, the seaports and NNPC.

Religion / Re: Are There Degrees Of Punishment In Hell? by grandstar(m): 8:23pm On Apr 07
Jackanda1:
Happy sunday.

The bible talks about hell and death been cast into the lake of fire.(Rev20:13-15)
This means every unsaved person is going to be swimming in fire for all eternity.

What about people who were unlucky to exist before the gospel got to their location? E.g people who lived and died before the gospel got to Nigeria.

What about most people in countries e.g north korea and other such countries who have little to no knowledge about christ?

What of people who were unfortunate(they're all going to hell) to be born into say islam, budhism, hinduism and other religious movements? You might say these people should simply convert to christianity just by hearing the gospel, but switching religion isn't that simple. They are plugged to their faith the same way you have been indoctrinated and plugged to yours.

What about other sects of christianity that aren't getting it right?

Are all of this people going to be thrown into the lake of fire recieving same punishment as shekau or Hitler for all eternity?

If it stands by Israel, it is seen supporting a right-wing party which have no love for Palestinians and are determined to flush out Hamas out of Gaza, no matter how excessive, with no sensitive to world opinion, including America.

They’re prepared to lose $1.5 million annually in tax and 4000 jobs in these hard times. Why, because Tinubu and his all Yoruba advisers are real dullards who will not stop until they see the country in ruins. Even the CNN reporter is shocked! Funny thing there is, they think they’re dealing with the Igbos, but I bet over 50% of those 4000 jobs sent into the unemployment market will be Yoruba.

Politics / Re: NERC Fines AEDC ₦200 Million For Violation Of The New Tariff by grandstar(m): 9:30pm On Apr 05
Why are they being fined? All customers deserve to be in that band. All customers deserve a minimum of 20hours a day of power.

This segregated billing is absolute nonsense. How will they actually separate the billing?

Do not say the poor can't pay the new rates
. They suffer the most from segregated billing, only deserving of 3hours of power a day. Their businesses are then left to the mercy on the most expensive power of all, the generator for light, especially for their business.

It is cheaper to power your home for a week with the new rate than with a generator for a day, and thats when the use of the subsidized petrol at 600/litre.

I met a man today and he was thankful on how I was able to explain economic issue easily to him.

The government needs to be able to explain economic issues to people in simple terms.

If people knew why electricity tariffs need to be increased or better still, deregulated, most will willingly accept it.

My village has had no electricity for over 10 years over the lousy excuse of a lousy bill the village owes the utility. My hometown Ondo barely receives 6 hours of power daily and this has been the way for about a decade now.

If paying 225 per kilowatt hour would eventually translate to 20 hours of power a day, they would grab it with both hands.

Power theft should not be treated with kid gloves. Everyone suffers. Bills may be high to cover the loss of stolen power. Start charging repeat offenders to court. If mighty edifices of so called untouchables were razed down in Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan, I don't see the big deal about these relative small timers.

Listen to Omokri at your own peril. The man is a renowned economic illiterate.

Many things affect the exchange. In Nigeria, fiscal policies by the FG and monetary policies by the CBN.

If the federal government runs a massive budget deficit, it would lead to a depreciation of the Naira. If the CBN runs a loose monetary policy, that would also make the Naira tank.

Can Dangote refinery help the Naira rise? To some extent yes but only very little.

But would would really help the Naira is massive exports of refined oil products not only from Dangote refinery but from new ones coming onstream and the from the refurbished Port Harcourt and Warri refineries. A massive surge in exports is the game changer and not really a reduction in imports.

And reduce your IQ ,abi?

The guy is a dullard. Why didn't he advise his dementia stricken thie.fnubu to fix refineries before removal of subsidy? Instead he placed the cart before the horse.

The jokes on you. All those saying fix refineries first before removing subsidies are not economists but the stakeholders who only want to purchase petrol for close to nothing

No economist supports that notion. It isn't compulsory to fix the refinery first. Actually, removing subsidies and better still, fully deregulating the price will encourage people to build refineries. Nobody is keen on producing a product the government fixes below the market price.

Dangote said had Jonathan succeeded in lifting the subsidy in 2012, he would have commenced his refinery project then.

That is why even though demand for petrol is the highest among the refined products, Dangote has started off by only refining diesel. Government needs to go further and deregulate the price of petrol as it has been done for diesel, kerosene and cooking gas.
