Poverty This is a social problem as much as it is a medical one. Kano is a large sprawling city with very high levels of poverty and unemployment. Smoking away everyday miseries And drug taking is a way to escape from the hard realities of life, even if only for a short while. Mansur Kabir is the minister of health in Kano state and his ministry has been monitoring this dangerous trend among drug users in Nigeria. "There's a big difference between the drug-taking in Nigeria and the one in Europe. "The expensive ones like cocaine and other dangerous drugs are not available here because of their expense. "So these young people tend to resort to cheap drugs - to drinking excreta from animals, from dye products, things that one can never imagine. "They are potentially very dangerous to young people." Mr Kabir fears that the problem may not go away soon. Many Nigerians turn to drugs because of poverty and unemployment "It has become a problem particularly within the last two to three years - and it seems to be coinciding with increasing poverty and decreased opportunities for employment. "There is also a very high migration from rural to the urban areas." This a pattern repeated in urban areas across Nigeria. There is an army of underemployed youths - all hungry, many on drugs and in need of money. They are available for hire to politicians fighting election campaigns - a recipe for instability. Musa Sa'ad Mohammed, a health official in Kano, says he is very much concerned about the potential for further violence in a city that has seen more than its fair share of civil unrest over the years. "There are lots of people with lots of energy, lots of ideas and lots of potentials but cannot find work. "Eventually what you find is a whole army of youth that are made to use their energies and resources and capabilities negatively." Vicious circle My drug taking friends round off their day smoking joints of marijuana laced with lizard dung. It’s ready to drink now,” said a menial worker from Kano State. The potion, when taken with peanuts or kolanut, produces a strong effect akin to drinking whisky on a very hot day. He enjoyed the pleasurable effect and started using it to get high until a friend at the construction site where he worked allegedly introduced him to the potency of lizard tail too. The most frequent pattern of use was mixing lizard faeces and marijuana with charred tail of lizard and smoking it. He said it increased his self-esteem, made him more confident, and sedated him for at least 10 hours. The patient claimed that immediately the ecstasy wears off, he starts craving seriously for another fix of marijuana, lizard tail and faeces. The craving is usually unbearable as it caused him severe nausea, itching of the throat, gums and several body parts and mild trembling. To guarantee his daily fix, he would usually obtain lizards from walls of the houses, toilets, and around trees. On detailed psychiatric examination, he was diagnosed as a case of opioid-dependent syndrome and nicotine-dependent syndrome. When Sharia law was introuced in the north, most young people began abusing Codeine and other opiates. According to them, codeine is NOT haram as only alcohol is completely forbidden. Other social factors also contributed to the high rate of drug abuse in the north. Young divorced women took to codeine and from there had to delve into prostitution to fund their expensive addiction. Igbos did not force codeine down any ab0ki or yarinya's throat. Codeine and Tramadol addiction is also wide spread in the Arab world for the same reason it persist in northern Nigeria as they also see Codeine as a substitute to alcohol. Most young northerners probably got their first codeine sip when they were in the middle-east as this is the preferrred drug of choice among Arab Muslims. Trammadol abuse is rampant in the Gaza Strip, Cairo and Saudi Arabia. The addiction was learned from their Arab masters. The few Igbos who sell codeine to the Ab0Kis up north are meeting a demand. Last I checked codeine and Trammadol are not banned in Nigeria neither is their sale regulated. The North should either call for an outright ban of of the sale of opiates or call for heavy regulations in their sale. The north should also learn to take responsibility for their foolishness and address this growing menace in their backyard.
