Nairaland / General / 2019 Election: Full Text Of Buhari’s Speech To Nigerians by Habers2013(m): 6:06am On Feb 15, 2019
President Muhammadu Buhari has urged Nigerians to vote right in Saturday’s presidential and national assembly elections.

He also assured Nigerians of free, fair and creddible polls.

The president gave the assurance during a live broadcast on Thursday

His Full speech below.

“ Fellow Citizens,
“On Saturday, February 16, 2019, you will, once again, be called upon to choose the leaders who will pilot the affairs of our great nation for the next four years. This is a constitutional right which should be freely exercised by all eligible voters.

2. I wish therefore to start by assuring all Nigerians that this Government will do its very best to ensure that the 2019 elections take place in a secure and peaceful atmosphere.

3. It was indeed such free, fair and peaceful elections that made it possible for our Government to emerge, despite the fact that we were contesting against a long-standing incumbent party.

4. And as your president and a fellow Nigerian, I ask that you come out and queue to fulfill this important obligation you have to yourselves and your fellow citizens – and to our common future.

5. Let me at this point, reaffirm the commitment of the Federal Government to the conduct of free and fair elections in a safe and peaceful atmosphere. Just yesterday, I signed the Peace Accord alongside 72 other presidential candidates.

6. I want to assure all Nigerians, the diplomatic community and all foreign election observers of their safety and full protection. Any comments or threats of intimidation from any source do not represent the position of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

7. As Government has a critical role in maintaining the democratic traditions, so do citizens. I therefore urge you all, as good Nigerians, to take a personal interest in promoting and maintaining peace in your respective neighbourhoods during the elections. This is certainly not a time to allow personal, religious, sectional or party interests to drive us to desperation.

Nairaland / General / See How PDP Want To Prevent Rigging During The Elections by Habers2013(m): 5:04am On Feb 14, 2019
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) says it will deploy a state-of-the-art “Parallel Voting Tabulation (PVT)’’ system and four other strategies to prevent any form of rigging or manipulation in Saturday’s presidential election.

Mr Osita Chidoka, former Aviation Minister and Chairman, Strategy Committee of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, disclosed this to newsmen on Wednesday in Abuja, the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports.

The other strategies according to Chidoka included a national network of fully equipped Situation Rooms and Call Centres, a nation-wide hotline for the public to report malpractice and the launch of a hashtag, #DefendYourVote.

He described PVT as a “scientifically proven, best practice technique, to hold election authorities accountable, particularly when there is a lack of trust and the result are highly contested.

“Our methodology accounts for several different scenarios to ensure continued collation of the results in the event of any disruptions with collation process. Hard copies of the signed voter tally provided to all party agents by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC officers) will be transported to the central command centre should future disputes need to be reconciled’’.

Politics / The Real Reasons Nigerians Chased Out Buhari With Stones From Ogun State, Osinba by Habers2013(m): 5:25am On Feb 12, 2019
Many Nigerians have reacted to the violence that broke out at the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential rally for President Muhammadu Buhari, in Ogun State, yesterday.

Leading the pack is the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP. In a veiled reference to the Trader-Moni Scheme, anchored by Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, the party noted that Nigerians could not be bought with N10,000, hence the violence unleashed at the Abeokuta, Ogun State Presidential rally of the APC, on Monday.

On its verified Twitter handle, the PDP said that the violence was a direct result of the four years of alleged misrule of President Muhammadu Buhari. The party said: “The public pelting and jeering at Buhari and his APC, during his election campaign rally, in Abeokuta, Ogun State, is a direct response by Nigerians to his four years misrule, as depicted in the expansion of poverty, corruption, divisiveness, and bloodletting in our nation.

Nairaland / General / 13 Things You Should Give Up If You Want To Be Successful by Habers2013(m): 11:39pm On Feb 10, 2019
Sometimes, to become successful, we do not need to add more things, we need to give up on some of them.

Even though each one of us has a different definition of success, there are certain things that are universal, which, if you give up on them, you will be more successful.

Some of them you can give up today, while it might take a bit longer for others.

1. Give Up On The Unhealthy Lifestyle
“Take care of your body. It is the only place you have to live.” — Jim Rohn

If you want to achieve anything in life, everything starts here. First, you have to take care of your health, and there are only two things you need to keep in mind:

Healthy Diet
Physical Activity
Small steps, but you will thank yourself one day.

2. Give Up The Short-term Mindset
“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough.” — Mae West

Successful people set long-term goals, and they know that these aims are merely the result of short-term habits that they need to do every day.

These healthy habits should not be something you do; they should be something you are.

There is a difference between: “Working out to have summer body” and “Working out because that is who you are.”

3. Give Up Playing Small
“Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone, and as we let our light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” – Marianne Williamson

If you never try and take great opportunities, or allow your dreams to become realities, you will never realize your true potential.

Moreover, the world will never benefit from what you could have achieved.

So voice your ideas, don’t be afraid to fail, and certainly don’t be afraid to succeed.

4. Give Up Your Excuses
“It is not about the cards you are dealt, but how you play the hand.” – Randy Pausch, The Last Lecture

Successful people know that they are responsible for their life, no matter their starting point, weaknesses, and past failures.

Realizing that you are entirely responsible for what happens next in your life, is both frightening and exciting.

However, it is the only way that you can reach the success because excuses limit and prevent us from growing personally and professionally.

Own your life; no one else will.

Politics / BREAKING: South-south Governors Tell Onnoghen Not To Appear At CCT by Habers2013(m): 10:04pm On Jan 13, 2019
Governors of five states in the south-South have asked the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, to ignore the court summons by the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB).

The governors stated this in a communique issued at the end of an emergency meeting held at the Bayelsa Governor's lodge on Sunday in Abuja.

The communique was read by Seriake Dickson, Governor of Bayelsa State.

According to the governors, the action against the CJN is the reinforcement that the Muhamaddu Buhari administration has no regard for the sentiments of Nigerians, in particular the people of Niger Delta, and the rule of law.

The communique read: "The meeting deliberated on the recent happenings at the Supreme Court involving the Chief Justice of the Federation, Justice Walter Onnoghen and resolved that the action against him constitutes a setback to the gains of the nation’s democratic experience of 20 years.

"We note that under Section 158(1) of the 1999 Constitution, the National Judicial Council, has ample powers to deal exhaustively with matters pertaining to allegations of misconduct and discipline of Judicial officers. Specifically, the NJC has the powers and clear procedures for investigating allegations, and recommending appropriate sanctions or disciplinary measures against judicial officials as a matter of first instance before any further steps.

"The judicial pronouncements in the cases of FGN Vs Justice Sylvester Ngwuta of the Supreme Court (January 9, 2018) and Justice Ngajinwa Vs FGN 2017 at the CCT have given validation to the express provisions of the constitution on this issue.

Politics / CJN Onnoghen’s Accuser Denies Petition Was Politically-motivated, Says He Sued B by Habers2013(m): 9:46am On Jan 13, 2019
Dennis Aghanya, Executive Director, Anti-Corruption and Research-Based Data Initiative (ARDI), who wrote the petition against Walter Onnoghen, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, claims he took President Muhammadu Buhari to court in 2011.

In an interview published by The Punch on Sunday, he denied being sponsored by the presidency.

Aghanya affirmed that he used to be Buhari’s aide, but dismissed the claims that the petition against Onnoghen was politically-motivated.

“Did you not know that I once took Mr. President to court in 2011? I used to be one of his aides but I took him to court. This is a petition by an NGO. What has Mr. President got to do with it? People are just trying to avoid a major issue. Our concern is to unveil irregularities. People should not try to politicise the good work we are doing. The person the petition was written against owned up to everything. In issues of this nature, should we be sentimental or do we face facts?” he queried.

Asked why the petition against Onnoghen was coming so close to the elections, Aghanya said there was no time lag in things of that nature.

Politics / Ooni Of Ife Denies Buhari, Asks Nigerians To Vote Whomever They Want by Habers2013(m): 10:50pm On Jan 11, 2019
Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, the ooni of Ife, has advised Nigerians to vote whoever they desire to be their president in the forthcoming election.

The monarch made the comment on Friday after leading south-west monarchs on a visit to President Muhammadu Buhari at Aso Rock villa, Abuja.
Speaking with state house correspondents, he said the visit was not political but to discuss developmental issues that have to do with the south-west.

The monarch: “Election is so close by and obviously tension will build. What is critical is for us to know that Nigeria is greater than all of us.

“They (politicians) will come and they will go but Nigeria will remain. We traditional rulers who are very fortunate to still be alive, we have experienced many presidents, many governors.

“A president cannot use more than eight years, that is in the constitution of Nigeria, so Nigeria is greater than the president whose maximum tenure is eight years.

Politics / Atiku Explains Why Women Will Get 35% Of His Govt. Appointments, If Elected by Habers2013(m): 10:39pm On Jan 11, 2019
Abubakar at PDP Women Conference conference with the theme “Call for Action” held on Friday in Abuja said he had no fear of handing over the country to women.
He commended the women for organising the conference, saying that in his three decades in politics, women had been consistent in voting and he had enjoyed enormous support from them.

“I have practically seen it, when we used to vote through queues not through ballot papers, if I stand as a candidate and I turn my back to look at the lines that are supporting me, the women queues have always been three times those of the men.

“Therefore, it is the reason why we said we are going to give you more than 35 per cent, because your numbers and your pattern of voting justified that commitment.

“Therefore, between youth and women you have 70 per cent of the government. This is to prepare you to take over governance, to take over this country and make it work again,” Abubakar said.

Eurasia Group, a United States political risk consultancy corporation, has offered a bleak outlook over the possible electoral victory of Nigeria’s biggest presidential candidates, President Muhammadu Buhari and Atiku Abubakar.
With the 2019 presidential election just five weeks away, one of Buhari and Atiku is expected to be elected Nigeria’s president at the polls.

However, according to Eurasia’s recent report, victory for either of the two might not best serve the country as they both have limitations that might prove troublesome in the future.

The group described Buhari, 76, as lacking energy to solve Nigeria’s problems while Atiku is likely to enrich himself and associates if he becomes president.

The report read, “He (Buhari) is an elderly, infirm leader who lacks the energy, creativity, or political savvy to move the needle on Nigeria’s most intractable problems.

“His opponent is Atiku Abubakar, another gerontocrat who would focus on enriching himself and his cronies, avoiding the difficult and politically unpopular tasks necessary for reform.”

Politics / HURIWA Gives INEC 48 Hours To Repeal New Appointment For Buhari’s Niece, Amina Z by Habers2013(m): 11:11pm On Jan 03, 2019
A non-governmental organisation and pro-democracy group, the Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA), has given the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) 48 hours to rescind its appointment of Amina Zakari to head its electoral committee for the collation of results.

HURIWA likened the appointment to “match-fixing”, saying it shows clear signs that the forthcoming presidential poll has already been “technically manipulated”, following the choice “of a biological relation of President Muhammadu Buhari, Mrs. Amina Zakari, to head the core committee to co-ordinate the collation of results of the general election”.

HURIWA has also asked the National Assembly to declare a state of electoral emergency and pass a vote-of-no-confidence in the hierarchy of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

They have also supported calls for dissolution of the election management board and the appointment of a new team of “impartial and patriotic Nigerians to head the electoral umpire and conduct free, fair, transparent and unbiased general election”.

A statement by Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and Zainab Yusuf, the group’s National Coordinator and National Media Affairs Director, respectively, read: “We have just ended a six hours long national emergency parley in Abuja of our core national leaders and the leaderships of over 35 non-governmental organisations and our attention dovetailed into the emerging but very extensively ethically damaging national emergency now occasioned by the illegal and immoral appointment of Mrs Amina Zakari, the blood relation of President Muhammadu Buhari, to head the collation of results team for the most strategic national election in Nigeria’s nascent democracy, in which her uncle, President Muhammadu Buhari, is desperately interested in winning a second tenure and is hotly contested by some distinguished Nigerians.

Sports / Breaking: Chelsea Sign £58m Christian Pulisic From Borussia Dortmund by Habers2013(m): 4:06pm On Jan 03, 2019
Chelsea Announce Major January Transfer Signing

Chelsea have announced the 64m euros (£58m) signing of United States international, Christian Pulisic from German club, Borussia Dortmund.

The 20-year-old will however be loaned back to Dortmund until the end of the season, Naija News understands.

He made his Bundesliga debut, at the age of 17, in January 2016, and two months later, was called up to the USA team.

Pulisic has gone ahead to make 81 appearances in the German top flight and played 20 games in the Champions League.

He has already scored three goals in 18 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund this season and scored nine goals in 23 games for the US.

“It’s a privilege to have signed for such a legendary club,” he said after putting pen to paper.

Dortmund director Michael Zorc said: “It was always Christian’s dream to play in the Premier League.

“That certainly has to do with his American background, and as a result we were unable to extend his contract.

“Against this background, we have decided to accept an extremely lucrative bid by Chelsea, given the low contract maturity.”
