Why always Blackface??

It’s a day in British tradition dedicated to opening boxes of gifts received at Christmas, and that is why it’s called Boxing Day. But what the Adesina family got this last December 26 was a crushing blow, the type Mike Tyson, in his heyday, handed out to his opponents in the ring. It was a blow to the solar plexus: painful, sad, traumatic, leaving an impact that not even time heals. Such pain lasts forever.
President Muhammadu Buhari, whom I am privileged to serve as Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, had told me at a private meeting before Christmas that since I was a Christian, I could take some days off during the Yuletide season to be with my family. That was why Boxing Day found me in Lagos, and at about 4 p.m, I left the house to attend a special church program billed for 5 p.m. The day was bright and beautiful.
At 4.30 p.m, a few meters to my destination, my phone rang. It was my immediate elder brother, Tayo, a Professor of History at the University of Ibadan. The news he gave fouled up the hitherto cheery atmosphere, and even the sun seemed to have fled from the sky. An official of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) had called him to say our sister, Foluke, a Professor of Dramatic Arts, at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, had been involved in an accident along the Lagos/Ibadan Expressway. Of the four people in the car, two were certified dead.
The next half an hour was probably the longest I’d ever spent in my life. I made a detour for the house, and continued to communicate with the FRSC official, whose number I had collected from my brother. Later, I contacted Mr Bisi Kazeem, spokesman of the commission and a long time friend, asking him to help with precise information. It came almost at the speed of light. Two people were truly dead, and they were my sister, and her brother-in-law, who was visiting from America. It was him that was being taken to Lagos from Ibadan, to catch a flight back to the U.S that night. Now, he had boarded a last flight to eternity. Very sad! Tragic!
For the seven Adesina brothers and sisters, this was trauma in the true sense of the word. Five brothers and two sisters, and now, one of the sisters was gone. Like George Orwell wrote in his work, ‘A Hanging,’ “We were a party of men walking together, seeing, feeling, understanding the same world. But with a sudden snap, one of us was gone. One mind less, one world less.”
From Lagos to London, Ibadan to Abeokuta, where the Adesinas are based, it was a festival of tears. Raindrops fell endlessly from our eyes. Was it not just a little over two years earlier that we buried our mother? Don’t we still miss her keenly, though she died at 75? Yes, she could have lived to be 80, and even more. Foluke became the automatic mother, keeping everyone under her wings. From her base in University of Botswana, where she was a visiting professor, on sabbatical from OAU, Ife, she was the rallying point for everybody. She was merely home for Christmas, and was to return to Botswana on January 22. Now she was dead, at just 53 years old, a latest victim of famished Nigerian roads. A lifetime of study and research, gone. All the knowledge, wasted. There are only 10 female professors of Dramatic Arts in Nigeria. Now, one of them was gone, consumed by rapacious Nigerian roads. One mind less, one world less.
The Adesina family of Ipetumodu, in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State had a patriarch in John Oyebade Adesina, an educationist, who was the first African principal of St Charles Grammar School, Osogbo, in the 1960s. The school was easily the best in the then Western Region, producing students who shone like stars in the West African School Certificate of Education. From there, the dyed-in-the-wool educationist was transferred to Notre Dame College, Usi-Ekiti. He retired from there to his Ipetumodu homestead in 1971, where his seven children were brought up under what was akin to a ‘military regime.’ He ran the home just exactly as he ran the school.
All of us grew up together, and became quite close, finding succour in one another, and in our mother, whenever our father whipped us till we saw stars. The patriarch passed on in 1985 (we had come to appreciate the discipline imbued in us by then), the matriarch followed in 2013, but the children remained inseparable. At any given time, you could have three or four Adesina siblings in different parts of the world, pursuing one professional thing or the other. Only Yewande, my immediate younger sister, lives in the U.K permanently, with her family. But we were always in touch. Foluke had created an email group of all seven of us, and we communicated at the touch of a button. There was no separating us. Till the blow of Boxing Day. Now, it is one mind less, one world less.
In 1982, Foluke (by the way, all seven of us are on first name basis, because we were brought up that way, and it is convenient for us) had gone to serve at NTA Minna, in Niger State, after graduating from the then University of Ife. She came back the following year, a completely changed person. We were a religious family, of the Roman Catholic stock, but in Minna, Foluke had met with the Pentecostals, and had become born again.

After his widely publicised marriage triangle saga, Nollywood actor, Solomon Akiyesi has vowed not to give marriage a third chance except if it’s a white female lover.
In 2013, the actor was in the news for dumping his first wife, Ezinne to move on with lover, Lilian and losing both of them in the end. At the venue of his 2013 wedding, his first wife stormed the church venue to disrupt the ceremony while the controversy attracted a lot of attention in the media.
Speaking recently, Akiyesi said, “I am not married and I am not prepared to get married again. Since my marriage broke down, I have decided to be alone instead of investing my love in any woman who would not appreciate me in the first place. If I have to get married at all, I would marry a white woman or a black woman with a white heart because they are the ones who appreciate love. I can no longer invest my love on people who do not appreciate it and still rub it on my face.
“I am not going to say that none of the women I was with appreciated me. Before we get into marriage, everything is nice and smooth because we are pretending and making each other believe what we are not. But when we get into marriage, then we see our true colour. Marriage is like an investment; when you put your money into a business, you would expect returns, and the returns of marriage are peace and rest of mind. If you are going into a marriage that would not guarantee you any of that, then it is better you do not venture into the marriage at all. Starboy act, Wizkid has landed another song theft accusation in the space of two weeks from another artiste following a similar clash with singer, Dammy Krane.
The latest one comes from veteran dancehall act and a former member of the defunct Afro-pop singing trio, Plantashun Boyz, Ahmedu Augustine, widely known as Blackface.
According to him, the popular hit tune, Ojuelegba by the singer was jacked from one from of his songs entitled, Killa off his 2010 Dancehall Business album.

“If you check properly, you would realise that Wizkid’s hit, Ojuelegba, sounds exactly the same as the track 13 on my dancehall album released as far back as 2010. You need to listen to that album to know what I am talking about. The song is so similar that I think it shouldn’t be that way,” Blackface alleged.

The Stamp Duties Act was in existence since colonial era. The present one was first promulgated in 1990 and reviewed in 2004. In the past, attempts to enforce it have all failed. From 2004 upward, the CBN had issued 3 circulars on its enforcement without any positive result.

What Has Changed?
Much have changed. Although the law has been in place, what was lacking was the enforcement culture. Government is now determined to enforce all financial laws and regulations in order to shore up revenue and prevent leakages.
What Does It Cover:
It covers any note, memo or writing whereby any amount of money (in excess of N4.00) is acknowledged or expressed to have been received, deposited or paid.

How Does It Affect You?
A financial transaction levy of fifty naira is deducted on any receipt via eletronic payment, cash or cheque in excess of N1000.00. Note that fifty naira is deducted NOT on every N1000.00 but on every transaction in excess of N1000.00 whether it is in millions or billions.


Are There Exemptions?
Yes. It does not include self-to-self transfer whether intra or interbank, and it also exempts transfers and withdrawals involving savings accounts that are used by majority of low income Nigerians.
Is It A Nigeria-Only Practice?
No. It is a global practice that has been in place (to varying applications) in many countries.
Benefits:
If fully enforced, the Stamp Duties Act has the potential to generate over 2 trillion naira annually of which only about 50 – 100 billion will come from the fifty naira cash receipts. The rest will come from stamp duties on shares, bonds and property purchases. It is also capable of generating between 100 000 – 300 000 jobs in the postal service subsector.
Legal Implications
Receipts not backed by duty stamps are not legally recognized and are therefore not acceptable as evidence before the courts.

It has been a good 6 years and now I can categorically say I have let go of all bitterness and hate I felt for a man I once loved. It has been an uphill journey but to find myself here is a blessing.

Without getting into detail and backtracking too much, I’ll summarize it as a lot of naivety, a lot of bad decisions, and a lot of untrained media professionals ready to blow things out of proportion. A man sang a song and for whatever reason known to them, Nigerian Media “professionals” decided to tag it as what it was not, and a lot of Nigerian onlookers decided to help spread it without knowing if it was true or not and unfortunately for me, I was caught in the crossfire. A lot of people formed opinions about me, some even hate me till today for something that was mere fiction. Such is life right?

Till today, I still wonder how things got that far. I wonder how things got so nasty. I wonder how a once beautiful relationship turned so sour so quickly.

These days, we talk – a lot. We talk about what happened and how we got here. These days, we can now joke and laugh about the past. I ask a lot of questions because I really want to understand him and put myself in his shoes. I also hope he understands my every reaction and puts himself in my shoes.

Through all the mess, we never really talked deeply about things. There was too much resentment on my side for me to want to allow him in. There was too much bitterness in my soul to ever want to forgive. I honestly never thought this day would come – that is how angry I was. There is a Yoruba proverb that states “when the ocean rises, you don’t rise to meet it.” For every action there is a reaction and for every reaction there are consequences.

The Preaident of Mali, Ibrahim Boubacar Keita has declared a 10-day nationwide state of emergency following the deadly assault on hotel.

At least 21 people, including two attackers, were killed after armed Islamists stormed a luxury hotel in Bamako, Mali on Friday morning.

President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced a 10-day nationwide state of emergency beginning Friday night at midnight. He said a three-day period of national mourning was due to begin Monday, with flags flying at half-mast


The dead included one American, a 41-year-old development worker and six Russians citizens.

Three people have been killed after gunmen attacked a popular hotel in the capital of Mali with guns and grenades taking scores of hostages in their wake.

According to a staff at Radisson Blu hotel, Tamba Diarra, the attackers used grenades in the assault. He did not have information on casualties or the number of assailants involved.

A statement provided to the BBC by the Rezidor hotel group said it “understands that a hostage-taking is under way” at the Radisson Blu in Bamako. “According to our information, two people are holding 140 clients and 30 employees.”
