Nairaland / General / Read What Buhari Said About Fuel Scarcity by Hajishehu(m): 4:57am On Apr 10, 2016 |
President Muhammadu Buhari says he feels the
pains of Nigerians at this time of fuel scarcity,
poor power supply and economic downturn .
“As a government that was propelled into office
by the power of the people , we cannot but feel
the pains of our compatriots, and we deeply
empathise with them . We are working round
the clock to ease the pains of Nigerians , and
the efforts of the government have started
yielding fruits as we seek to make the
petroleum products available nationwide,
restore gas supply to the power generating
firms , reflate the economy and put Nigerians
back to work, ” President Buhari said .
Speaking at the 2015 Vanguard Awards in
Lagos on Friday night , where he was honoured
with the Personality of the Year Award 2015 ,
the President, who was represented by the
Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai
Mohammed, said he understands that
Nigerians have started questioning whether
this indeed is the CHANGE they voted for, while
some have even gone as far as saying that by
voting for the All Progressives Congress ( APC ) ,
Nigerians have entered “One Chance ”.
“Well , I can tell Nigerians that our CHANGE
AGENDA is real, and that indeed , they will get
the change they voted for. Nigerians have not
entered ‘ One Chance ’ , because the ‘ One
Chance ’ drivers and their conductors have been
driven out of town , ” the President said .
“Change is a process , and that process has
begun… The pains of today are temporary, and
will soon give way to abundance joy as we put
our country firmly on the path of sustainable
growth and development .”
The President said all Nigerians , the Civil
Society Organisations and the media are the
real heroes of the last general elections in
particular and the country’ s democracy in
general, adding : “And they, more than anyone
or group of people , deserve all the accolades .”
He commended the media for the role it played
in ensuring the relative success of the last
general elections , and the resilience of the
nation’ s democracy since the beginning of this
Republic.
“When the history of the last general elections
as well as our democracy is eventually written,
I have no doubt that the media will occupy a
prominent place on its honour ’ s list. This is
not a surprise , because there is no contesting
the fact that from the pre -independence years
through the years of independence , the various
attempts at democratic governance and the
years of military interregnum, the media has
stood solidly on the side of the people and has
fought for the national interest, without
compromising its integrity , ” President Buhari
added.
In bestowing the honour on the President, the
Vanguard described him as ”a living example
of what tenacity , fortitude, and perseverance
mean in human experience, and until future
experience proves otherwise, he is the closest
yet that Nigeria will have to America’ s
Abraham Lincoln.” http://www.informationng.com/2016/04/fuel-scarcity-i-feel-your-pains-buhari.html |
Nairaland / General / Borno Has Lost 20,000 Lives , N 2trn To Boko Haram Insurgency – Shettima by Hajishehu(m): 4:43am On Apr 10, 2016 |
Borno State yesterday said up to $ 6 billion ( N 2 trillion) has gone down the drains and about 20, 000 people killed , with two million others displaced in the state since the Boko Haram insurgency in the country stated. Governor Ibrahim Shettima said this during the First National Economic Forum organised by The Nation in Lagos. According to him, the $6 billion financial losses do not include losses incurred by local and international businesses located in the capital city, Maiduguri. He said before the insurgency, a branch of one of the tier one banks in Maiduguri was processing over a billion naira daily , the biggest cash centre in the country. However , despite the challenges in the state , Shettima gave hope of creating a new Borno State . He showed the immense reconstruction activities going on in the state where the displaced persons will be rehabilitated . “Our government has increased funding for education and made it free and compulsory . From practical experience and findings from on- the- spot assessment of our visits to schools, there were large school drop-outs due to poor feeding and paucity of infrastructure especially for the girl- child . We have also introduced a model transportation system that has encouraged more parents to send their children to school as against what we had before ,” he said . Shettima noted that his state has the second largest land mass in country, therefore , has enough land for farming but regretted that the state known for its huge agricultural potential with prosperous farmers , has become a shadow of its self with former big time farmers turning to beggars . He noted that there is a direct correlation between poverty and insurgency, youth unemployment and insurgency, militancy in the Niger Delta and lack of skill and unemployment. http://www.informationng.com/2016/04/borno-has-lost-20000-lives-n2trn-to-boko-haram-insurgency-shettima.html |

Nairaland / General / Gombe Governorship Tussle Goes To Appeal Court..... by Hajishehu(m): 8:23pm On Nov 17, 2015 |
Gombe Governorship tussle goes to appeal court. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidate in the April 11 governorship poll in Gombe State, Alhaji Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, have approached the Court of Appeal, praying it to void the judgment of the tribunal which upheld the election of Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo. The tribunal, headed by Justice Mohammed Sirajo, dismissed the petition brought before it by Yahaya and his party and held that Governor Ibrahim Dankwambo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was duly elected as the state governor. Specifically, the tribunal dismissed the two grounds for which the petition was premised on the ground that it lacked merit. “Having resolved the two main issues formulated for determination in this petition against the petitioners and in favour of the respondents, we hereby dismiss the petition for lacking in merit,” the three-member panel of justices held. Dissatisfied with the verdict of the tribunal delivered on October 14, 2015, Yahaya and the APC headed to the Court of Appeal sitting in Yola. At the appellate court they are contending that in arriving at its decision, the tribunal erred in law and misdirected itself, a misdirection, which they said, occasioned a miscarriage of justice. Their team of lawyers led by Chief Adeniyi Akintola (SAN) raised 22 grounds of appeal before the appellate court. Others joined as respondents in the appeal are the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The appellants are contending that members of the tribunal erred in law when they held that they did not call evidence to prove their case. They said the tribunal’s position that the documents they tendered cannot be considered as evidence because they were not backed up by witnesses was erroneous. In its verdict, the tribunal held thus: “In our consideration, where a party calls a witness or tenders a document as an exhibit, it will be deemed to have called evidence. However, in this case, a party only attempted to call evidence by attempting to tender a document. “Without success, he cannot be said to have called evidence, because a document that is rejected is not evidence before a court. In a civil proceeding, attempt to do a thing is not the same as doing that thing. It is only in the realm of our penal laws that attempt to commit an offence is itself an offence. We hold that the 3rd respondent did not call evidence in this petition and is therefore under no obligation to file its final address first. The written final address of the 3rd respondent (INEC) dated 29th September, 2015 is properly and validly filed. But the lawyer to the appellant, Akintola is arguing before the appellate court that while INEC opened its case by tendering form EC, the rejection of the document does not amount to the fact that INEC did not call evidence. He said the document rejected could be re-admitted by the Court of Appeal because INEC, having opened its case and tendered document, must file her final address first. The appellants told the appellate court that there was nothing like an attempt to tender document by the 3rd respondent (INEC) since the document was not withdrawn before it was rejected and so marked. “The analogy of an attempt introduced by the honourable tribunal is novel and has occasioned a miscarriage of justice. Failure of the honourable tribunal to discountenance the final written address of the 3rd respondent in the circumstance cannot be justified,” Akintola stated. He argued that the tribunal erred in law when it struck out paragraphs 38 to 174(ii,vii,x) of the appellants’ petition on the ground that the facts are not clear, precise, but vague, nebulous, generalised and generic. According to Akintola, the tribunal did not consider all the averments in the petition together, even when parties have joined issue on the averments contained in the paragraphs of the petition struck out. He added that the averments in a petition or pleadings must be read together and not one paragraph in isolation. The appellants are also contending that the tribunal erred in law by holding that the depositions adopted by witnesses, PW2, PW3, PW7,PW10, PW11, PW12, PW14 and PW17 are incompetent “on account of failure of the person that interpreted the statement to sign the column for interpreter and accordingly expunged the evidence found on the said depositions of the witnesses. we need justice, because we vote PDP out during last governoship election |
Nairaland / General / Smart Adeyemi ’s Group , Ex - Rep Member , Others Defect To APC In Kogi by Hajishehu(m): 7:53pm On Nov 17, 2015 |
With barely four days left to the Kogi governorship election, members of Senator Smart Adeyemi’s political organisation and notable Peoples Democratic Party’s chieftains in Okunland have defected to the All Progressives Congress. Leading the defectors in an elaborate ceremony held on Monday in Iyara, headquarters of Ijumu Local Government Area, was Fehinti Dada, director-general of the organisation and former chairman of the council. Receiving the defectors, the APC standard bearer, Abubakar Audu, commended their courage, saying the wind of change spreading across the country had finally come to Kogi. He urged them to bring their wealth of experience to bear on the party to enable it shine at Saturday’s poll. Mr. Dada said he and the other members of the organisation defected from the PDP because the party had failed the people. He said a survey conducted by the organisation showed that the PDP-led administration in the state had collapsed activities at the third tier of government and placed council staff on percentage pay. “I was in Ikole local government area of Ekiti last week. “To my surprise, the council did not owe workers and recorded lot of achievements that had direct impact on the people, despite receiving less allocation in comparison to most councils in Kogi”, he said. Mr. Dada assured Mr. Audu that the defectors would work with the existing party structure on ground and deliver the council to the APC. In a related development, Duro Meseko, a former member of the House of Representatives, who represented Kabba/Bunu Federal Constituency between 2003 and 2007, also dumped the PDP for the APC with thousands of his supporters at Iluke in Kaba/Bunu constituency. Mr. Meseko said he and his supporters could not afford to be left out in the wind of change blowing across the country and implored the people of Bunu to come out en-masse and vote for the APC on Saturday. Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi West Senatorial District in the Senate advised the defectors to join hands with older members of the party to defeat the PDP administration in the state. He said Mr. Audu remained the best of the candidates jostling to rule the state because of his wealth of experience in statecraft and verifiable achievements that had continued to affect lives positively across the state.
