By Abdullah Abdulganiy "In a civilized society, nobody is above the law" Melaye, a Senator representing Kogi West and of course our Instagram Senator - who is sick in the hospital but healthy on Facebook and Twitter, had been the centre of discourse for many forums and platforms. He was arrested by the Nigerian police for allegedly possessing, in an illicit manner, armours and artillery. He was also accused of sponsoring some perceived miscreants who distort public peace and wreak havoc in Kogi State and its environs. Mr Dino - the crooner of (Ajekun Iya ni Oje) - was placed on the wanted list of the police but he had been dodging summon. The Sahara Reporters exposed how Uncle Dino vamoosed from the country in an attempt to thwart his summon by the police. Unfortunately, the saying of the elders that every day is for the thief and one day is for the owner caught upon him. He was caught red-handed on his way to Morocco. I wrote in (Nigeria and the unending drama in her hallowed chamber) that attempt to arrest him was greeted with doggedness and "omotarism." He, in fact, jumped out of a vehicle on motion. This compounded his problem as he was also charged with attempted suicide. Lolz, Niger Police, I hail thee! Shon sirs! As usual, Nigerians will always have their says if not their ways on every burning issues going on in the country. Mixed reactions had followed suit this comic scenario. Some are of the view that Dino's cloth was only cut according to his size. While others chided the police for their actions so far. I am not here to support any view, either the formal or the latter. What I just want to note unequivocally is that Nigerian police officers are known for their brutal handling of and disrepute for alleged suspects and non-suspects alike. So, it is no news that Mr Dino - the embattled Senator who uttered this gutter word: (I will rape you, impregnate you and nothing will happen) - was treated harshly by them. It is not the first and of course may not be the last. Abi beeko? Part of their culture is that immediately you are caught as a suspect by them, then you command no respect again. You will be treated as if you were a die-hard criminal. You will be made to sit on the floor no matter the level of your academic qualifications and religious status. You will sleep in that dirty thing called jail. Mallam Sanni Kay Yusuf narrated a scenario in one of his beautiful epistles entitled (Nigerian Police: Friends or Foes?) on the disregard for fundamental human rights by and brutality of the Nigerian police. Though we are still impatiently anticipating the second part of the article! He relayed how an Imam was arrested on no logical and lawful basis. Come and see bashings from right, left and corner in the comment section where a vast amount of people were also narrating their ordeals occasioned by these black-clothed men. The act of brutality is a typical custom of the Nigerian police. And this is due to the fact that "a lot" of them are either half-baked or not educated at all. How do you then expect one who is ignorant of the law to follow due process? I can also remember vividly, the interesting story narrated by my elder brother in Ilorin. He said he was going "jejely" along one of the Ilorin roads with another elder brother after closing from shop for the day. Unexpectedly, these black-clothed men came, parked their car by their side and the next thing was enter! What have we done? quizzed the gentle man. Why are you walking in the night? retorted the police. But it is not 12 o'clock yet now, responded the gentle man. Shut up! Who are you? the police said angrily. So unlucky for the police, (yours faithfully)'s grandfather, of blessed memory, used to be a retired police officer. Then my brother picked up his phone confidently as someone who doesn't have skeleton in his cupboard would do and made a call. Hello sir, "Awon olopa ti mu wa oooo". "Kilese," what did you do? They said we are walking in the night. Is it 12 o'clock yet. No sir, after 10. Give the phone to them. "This is Mr .............." Shon sir! Shon sir! We don't know they are your boys ooooo! My brother even said the policemen took them closer to home that particular day. What would have been their fate if they had nobody to call? These are the supposed friends of the people! I think Mr Dino had just been exposed to what commoners face in the hands of the Nigerian police. I don't really know of a country where police officers now have access to people's ATM card than Nigeria. One's mobile phone meant for privacy would be requested by the police on no reasonable ground. This is absolute absurdity! Dressing in a corporate manner now translates to being a yahoo boy to Nigerian police. The Nigerian police are not well trained in handling suspects. Uncle Dino's case is still a tip of the iceberg. He has not been tortured, injured nor maimed. Having known our police for their way of life, why should Dino's case catch us unawares? Why the outcry as if life was about to end. The masses have been decrying the excesses of the Nigerian police yet no backup by the bigwigs. Is this now the right time for them to shout and rant when their colleague had been shown just a little out of the numberless brutalities done to the masses? When a journalist working for the Independent was illegally detained by the DSS for exercising his freedom of expression, which of them spearheaded the movement for his freedom? Absolutely none! So why the ululation now? What is sauce for the goose is also sauce for the gander. Not until the bigwigs too join hands together with we the masses in bewailing the excesses of the police when either of the party is affected, we will continue to be ruthlessly maltreated by them. Still fresh in our memories is how a business man was threatened by some irresponsible policemen to withdraw money from his bank account for them along Okota road. Thousands of millions of Nigerians face brutality in the hands of the police. Therefore, Dino being maltreated by the police is no news in the first place. It does not worth gaining the front page of our newspapers. In fact, our bigwigs use policemen to abuse the masses. I read briefly on Facebook how one supposed "honourable," Wole Oke employed policemen in detaining Olu Bayo, an activist, on no other ground than craving for good governance. Cases of how top government officials use the police to cajole fellow activists in Ilorin are innumerable. Why the show of shame and playing the victims when the Nigerian police made a U-turn and bounced back on them? It is typical of our political elite to always score public sympathy when caught in their dirty game by appearing as if they were sick. How somebody who was fit enough to jump out of the SARS vehicle is now lying on the sick bed for days is unfathomable and indescribable. Baba Sagay noted that Nigerian politicians will always loot the public funds and engage in other mischiefs in sound health but when caught, they will develop a chronic sickness suddenly. Is that how sickness jump on people? Olisah Metuh, this lady, Alinson Madueke and some others did the same thing. In short, if the bigwigs cannot always support the masses when oppressed by the police, they should therefore always keep quiet when what goes around comes around. In fact, most of them should be treated in a like manner, perhaps, they will give it a rethink before looting public funds and demonstrating arrogance of power. In a civilised society, nobody is above the law and everyone is treated equally. In all, the police is your friend. I rest my case! ~ Abdullah Abdulganiy is a columnist for Signals NG and director of the Light Column. |
By Abdullah Abdulganiy "It was allegedly opined that the best way to hide something from a "black man" is to keep it inside a book, article, write-up or anything readable. Why? Because we are very lazy to read. I hope you will read this and render the assertion baseless and untrue." As the Nigerian constitution has it, a general election shall be conducted every four years. In tandem with the above, the coming year (2019) as much anticipated will be another opportunity for Nigerians to elect those who will be at the helm of affairs. No doubt, the citizens of Nigeria, both the Administrators and the masses alike, are obsessed with the fast approaching general election. For the citizens, it is another opportune moment to drive out dwarfs and misfits priding themselves as giants among the Administrators. And for the Administrators, it is another time to maintain dominance, political influence and generate authority. The men in the street - who were once relegated and belittled - in turn will be "objects of worship" to the arrogant politicians canvassing their votes. They know full well that Democracy is a game of number. Hence, they humble themselves and pretend to be saints, only to become empowered and get intoxicated and thereby display their real selves. Indeed, they are devils in human's look. Should we (the masses) fail in making a right choice again, it then follows that we go through another four years of tragic and traumatic experience. The big question begging for answer therefore is that: how do we make the right choice? Are we to vote based on ethnicity, religion, age, experience or whatsoever? Experts in the study of political behaviour have shown that electorates vote considering these afore-said factors. But the bitter truth is that all these afore-mentioned factors do not necessarily translate to good governance and getting the best aspirant. They had failed us in the recent times. A Yoruba had once been the head of this country but it didn't translate to the development of the Yoruba land over others. A Muslim was once the head of this country but it didn't put a halt to the unequal treatments and injustice Muslims face in Nigeria. The case of hijab can adduce to this fact. That somebody has gathered enough experience in the political sphere of Nigeria is neither a guarantee of good governance. In fact, people that fall under this category have appeared to be the worst set of all Administrators. If you should study the political sociology of Nigeria very well, you will discover that most of the present Administrators - whether at the federal, state or local level - have been active players in Nigerian politics in the past. Most Lawmakers were once Governors. Conversely, most Governors were once Lawmakers. By this, one could suppose they have garnered immense experiences as regards the workings and dynamics of Nigerian politics. But how have we been benefited by their purported humongous experiences? Youths Vs Aged, who wins? A basic problem we have in this part of the world is coming to consensus on the definition of the term "youth". Who is a youth? At what age does somebody cease to be a youth? Who is old? At what time in life does one begins to age? These are questions begging for answers. As 2019 becomes fast approaching, Nigerians have made the upcoming general election the centre of most of their discussions. And the battle line seemingly has just been drawn between the youths and the geront-. Most youths and adults alike now hold to the school of thought that youths should be engaged in Nigerian politics. The former President of Nigeria, Dr Goodluck Jonathan was of this view and had tasked the youths to venture more into politics. A question begging for answer now is that: Does youthfulness translate to good governance? Mixed reactions were recorded following the declaration of the President, Muhammad Buhari, his interest to contest for a second-term in the Presidency. Also, more reactions have also trailed the ongoing #Take It Back Movement spearheaded by the founder of the controversial media outfit (Sahara Reporters), Omoyele Sowore. While some saw it as a reality, others described it as a mere daydreaming. While the youths are more concerned with driving out the aged (octogenarians) from the various political offices we have in Nigeria, specifically, the Presidency; what is becoming obvious and evident is that these old politicians are not ready to leave, hiding under the pretext of "experience" and "net worth". Indeed, these "Babas" must have one way or the other read Niccoli Machiavelli, specifically, his notorious work, The Prince. He was of the view that leaders must covet power by all means. He holds that the end justifies the means. He relegated morality outright in relation to politics. While the youths do not seemingly buy the idea of "we are the leaders of tomorrow" anymore; the aged are using the principle of "experience is the best teacher" to hoodwink the populace. This is crystal clear in the recent face-off between Barr. Shittu, the Minister for Communications and Mr. Sowore, the Founder of Sahara Reporters and Lecturer at School of Visual Arts in New York. The bitter truth is that these two political "gimmicks" - youthfulness and experience - won't work for us this time around! Both youthfulness and being aged do not presume good governance in the real sense. Have we not seen youths trusted with the mantle of leadership in various Nigerian varsities and in turn mismanaged the office by looting funds meant for student welfarism for their personal pocket? It is in this same country the SUG President of a popular Nigerian University, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, by name Ezeja, allegedly looted N4 million naira meant for the Union. Ditto, the SUG President of the University of Abuja, Okoye, reportedly misappropriated millions of naira belonging to the Student-Union. As-Sukuti's Gate is still fresh in the memory of we - Unilorites. The case of the young Governor, Yahya Bello, could also be alluded to complement this stance. The ungodly acts going on in Saudi Arabia is not unknown to the knowledge of Muhammad Ibn Salman, the "young" Crown Prince. Thus, I do not expect us to be bamboozled with youthfulness or other shenanigans as concerned with age or experience in this country again in this scientific age. It is not untrue that the young ones are always characterised by agility and the strength to govern the country. But it is a "white lie" to say there is always correlation between youthfulness and good governance. On the other hand, never should we be deceived again in this country by the seemingly irritating conviction that because the old ones have garnered a wide range of experiences, they should be trusted with power. This is a shenanigan to the core! A malodorous and odoriferous thought! With their purported immense experiences, how have they been able to move the country forward? How have we been faring in the recent years? These octogenarians should stop this prank for a while! Thus, we can elicit from the above that there is no concomitance between age and good governance. This reminds me of how Durkheim in his seminal work, Suicide, debunked the earlier assertions attributed to suicide and maintained that there was no concomitance between suicide and such factors as geography, poverty, weather and so on. He rather advocated "Social Integration" as a sole factor attributable to the committal of suicide. In a like manner, I debunk the view that age or experience is attributable to good leadership. Who then do we need as our leader(s) in this country? What are the qualities to be seen in a good leader(s)? This, I think should be the matter arising. The ongoing controversy on age or experience is needless and should be left aside for now. Who will make a good leader? Please, go through the post very well before showing how Intellectually groomed you are sirs and mas. I did not castigate FFK for acting as a watchdog or criticising the Buhari led Administration. It is a welcome development. My article did not even take that into consideration. What I have done was to call his attention to being couth while censuring the government. It is imperative as a Yoruba, and of course, I want to believe this is what other tribes preach! |
By Abdullah Abdulganiy Femi Fani-Kayode was born into the family of the late political gladiator and renowned lawyer, Chief Remi Fani-Kayode. Chief Remi served in so many capacities being one of the political bigwigs in Nigeria. And of course, he had helped redeem the image of Nigerian politics with his adroitness and dexterity. It might interest you to note that, he moved a motion that stimulated Nigeria's independence in 1958 in the Nigerian Parliament. The name "Fani-Kayode" is not unfamiliar with the Nigerian political terrain and lexicon. In fact, it could be likened to such names as Saraki, Tinubu, Awolowo, Sardauna, Yaradua, Lafiagi and so forth. Chief Babaremilekun Fani-Kayode was said to have hailed from Osun State, Nigeria; a popular Yoruba clime. Hence, it is presumable and of course unarguable that Mr Femi Fani-Kayode, who happens to be one of the children of Chief Babaremilekun Fani-Kayode is a Yoruba by ethnic identity and denomination. Though, one may find Mr David Oluwafemi's writings and utterances interesting and seemingly an avenue to learn new vocabularies of the English language. Indeed, this is somebody well endowed and blessed with captivating styles of writing and speaking. I will not be jolted nor in the state of dismay, if in the future this man wins for himself a Nobel Prize for Essay Writing. He is worth it! I am however sorry to state without mincing words that Mr Femi Fani-Kayode's writings and utterances - not minding if they are well articulated - are antithetical and of course not in conformity with the very moral constitution and teachings of the Yorubas. His writings are always laced with uncouth and unruly words that are unappealing to the very cultural practices of the Yorubas and even the religion he claims to represent. Every culture, they say, has its own distinct norms and dictates. In the case of the Yoruba culture, one is not expected to be rude and crude to one's age-mates let alone the elderly. Yorubas, unlike some other people in Nigeria, are known for respect for elders. This explains why it is embodied in the "unwritten" moral constitution of the Yorubas that when the elderly ones talk, the young ones keep quiet. Also, the young ones should not have direct eye contact with the elderly while conversing with them. The young ones are also expected to vacate a place while the elderly are talking. These and many others signpost a unique thing, which is: respect for elders. There are modes of correcting the elderly ones when they goof or err without cause for abuse. Mr Femi had in the recent past, consistently and repeatedly shown that he is disrespectful and uncivil. More often than not, he had been spotted using unprintable words to qualify the elderly - both the Yorubas and non-Yorubas alike. Our amiable Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osibanjo, an elderly Yoruba man, has over and over been a victim of Mr Femi's uncultured usage of words. He doesn't spare him at all. He employs harsh words in qualifying this man - not minding his grey hair - that one may suppose they were of the same age. He once called him "short man devil". As if that wasn't enough, he said the Vice President was also insane and had lost his mind. Lo and Behold! Prof. Yemi, if may not father Mr Femi, has all it takes to "elder-brother" him. The Yoruba moral constitution says that the elder brother has the right of a father. Though, one may commend and as well laud Mr Femi and many others for serving as watchdogs to the Buhari-led administration. Whether their criticism is politically motivated or not is not the concern of this text. However, Mr Femi must be cautioned of the abusive, vituperative, inciting and insulting words he employs whilst criticising the government and other personalities. This is somebody who allegedly tagged our President a "rapist" even when this man has not raped his wife nor any of his family members. This, to me is demeaning to the status of one who prides himself as a "learned colleague" and graduate of the Nigerian Law School. One should have expected Mr Femi to provide a singular proof whether in record or what have you to back up his bogus claim. Worst still, he remains adamant and dogged when put to correction. He runs amok and becomes more foul-mouthed when put to order - a quality of one who is unlettered, unscientific and has not passed through the four walls of the University. The above is glaring and crystal clear in his recent face-off with Mr Reno Omokri, who shares similar political thought with him. He was corrected by Reno when he misquoted the saying of Mr Atiku Abubakar. One should have expected Fani-Kayode to stick to correction, only for him to come up with his article titled (5 useful idiots and the spirit of the accursed slave) in which the "useful idiots" he made the concern of his text included his political crony - but at that time, a foe - Reno Omokri. He came with this article after resorting to name-calling and abuse of the person of Reno Omokri on the famous Twitter. Baba Obasanjo, a one-time President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Mr Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Jagaban of Africa and of course an elderly amongst the Yorubas; General Muhammad Buhari, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria; Prof Yemi Osibanjo, the Vice President of Nigeria; Mr Atiku Abubakar, a former Vice President of Nigeria; HRH Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi, the Oluwo of Iwo land; Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, the Executive Governor of Osun State; Sultan Muhammad Sa'd Abubakar and a host of others were once victims of Fani-Kayode's unrefined usage of words. It is very rare to find a personality in Nigeria whose sensibility and sensitivity had not been offended by Fani-Kayode's "sugar-coated" crude use of words - both his friends and foes alike. It is once in a blue moon you read his posts without spotting demeaning words and derogatory remarks. This is somebody who constantly disparages, smears and vilifies the image of Islam and presents the religion as a volatile and terrorist one even when the religion preaches peace and tranquility. This is an idiosyncrasy of someone suffering from sheer hatred and aversion for something triumphing. Not only that but also an attribute of one who is "Far From Knowledge" - FFK - and as well untrainable. One may assume that Mr Femi's uncultured way of life is a consequence of his stay abroad; where he learnt how to talk to the elderly as if they were mates. But this opinion might be somewhat erroneous as we have seen Yorubas in diaspora who live or studied abroad but still maintain and conform with the Yoruba moral constitution. The truth of the matter is that Femi Fani-Kayode has chosen the path of arrogance and unruliness as a way of life. It is high time Mr Femi Fani-Kayode was told about the aftermaths and adverse effects of his unruliness specifically towards the elderly. It goes a long way in killing the moral constitution of the Yorubas, bringing our elderly to disrepute, tarnishing our cultural heritage and corrupting the mindsets of the upcoming generations of the Yoruba lineage. ~ Abdullah Abdulganiy is a columnist for Signals NG and director of The Light Column. |
Cruelty, brutality and meanness have taken over the society. Is this the same Kwara State known for peace and of course a haven for all and sundry? It was reported by the Punch on the 6th of April 2018 that no fewer than six policemen and six others were killed after robbers stormed about five banks in Offa, Kwara State. The banks allegedly stormed were Guaranty Trust Bank, Zenith Bank, Union Bank, First Bank and Eco Bank. It would be recalled that some banks have abandoned Offa in the recent past due to the incessant robbery cases the community is posed with. This explains why a woman was saying (ejo ati Offa mo ti wa) - i came from Offa - when I went to the Skye Bank situated at Post Office, along Muritala Muhammad Airport road on one particular day in Ilorin metropolis. I was highly jolted when i over-heard that and thereby threw the question to myself "Isn't there a branch of Skye Bank at Offa?". Now, I understand why Skye Bank doesn't have a branch in Offa. It was somewhat unfathomable to me at the first instance, how could a bank like 'Skye Bank' not have a single branch in a civilised community like Offa, inhabited by a copious amount of people? Glory be to God, the answer to this puzzle is no more far-fetched. This recent robbery case will adduce to the fact that the Management of Skye Bank ran for dear life. Behold! This is not the first of its type. It should be recalled that something like this happened five years ago. Mama Gbemisola Ruqayyah Saraki noted that the recent one was the forth of its type in the history of Offa; where robbers would storm a whole community and throw its members into psychological trauma. She added that 30 innocent lives were lost to yet another dastardly armed robbery case in Offa, Kwara State. This is cruelty of the highest order! It is a preposterous act. Thirty innocent lives! Albeit, the Kwara State Police Command had debunked this claim and tagged it false via its press release. It insisted that the lives lost were 17 as against 30 peddled around. Whichever, life is life. Even, when a single life is lost, the act shall be condemned and made unacceptable. I hope these unknown murderers cum robbers are very much ready to account for and justify their nefarious act before their Lord. Do they even believe in the afterlife? Mind you, these are people who cannot always afford to lose any of their family members but have the effrontery and guts to waste innocent lives. Lives created by God, the most high! Can they create a singular insect as small and tiny as it is? I pray these people shall never know peace until they repent and tender an unreserved apologia to the entire sensibilities they have offended. Many condolences and sympathetic messages coming from government officials, NGOs like Kwara Rebirth Ambassadors and corporate individuals have trailed the ignoble incidence. Well, it is required especially when things like this occur. However, the question remains: Is this how we continue to stare at ourselves and fold our arms while robbers cart away our property and waste the lives of our beloved ones? One should have expected a serious government - saddled with the responsibility of protecting the lives and property of its citizens - to take a giant stride in preventing occurrences like this. Prevention, they say, is better than cure. Though, incidences like this are always inevitable. Nevertheless, sanity must be brought to place. I was extremely appalled when I read the press release of the Kwara State Government that it will take bold steps in bringing the offenders to book. I was like, is the government not trying to shoot the air? Medicine after death! An afterthought of the highest order. Well, I pray the culprits are caught and made to face the wrath of the law! Kwara State is very vulnerable. This is a state where there are minimal police checkpoints. Few or no sophisticated ammunition for the police. We either have policemen who harass the citizens and take everyone as a yahoo boy or those who follow the dignitaries up and down. This, of course is an ubiquitous problem in Nigeria. Our control system is not vibrant at all. There is no effective crime prevention scheme in this country at all. Imagine! The robbers were able to make their way after the sinister. None of them was wounded nor killed. They went scot-free! We are in a country where security personnel cannot make bold to stand bandits let alone we bloody civilians. A country where one cannot sleep with one's two eyes closed. One comes to ask that are we safe in this country again? Gone are the days when one can leave one's door wide open at night. Gone are the days when one can leave one's goods outside and place the price by its side. What has gone wrong in this country. This is a time as opined by an Arab poet when people would be left with no choice than to smile rather than cry over the demise of their family member(s) or friend(s) and conversely cry rather than smile when any of them is delivered of a baby. If things continue to go on like this, we would be left with nothing than to seek divine intervention. This is a country where a criminal will boast of his criminal act. Indeed, sanity must be brought back! The way out Until we learn from the outside world, we may not know peace in this country. Our forces are not fully reinforced. So, how do they face men of the underworld employing sophisticated weapons. One arising question should be: how do these heartless individuals gain access to the sophisticated ammos they use? A defect of our Custom Officers! Worst still, these bandits gain support from the cream of the society which makes it somewhat a difficult task to overcome them. Recently, a set of terrorists was caught, only to find out that one garrulous Senator, who will always claim to be the man of the people, Dino Melaye was allegedly solely behind them. How have we gone this far? Our Social Control System and Criminal Justice System need be invigorated and as well vibrant. The broken window theory suggests that criminals are more curious to engage in criminality when there is a palpable slight openness in the societal structure. More so, our social bond i.e attachment, commitment, belief......... as suggested by Travis Hirsch need be strengthened. In the past, before one steals or terrorises, one needs to think twice because this will bring shame and stigma to his family. Modernisation has torn us apart. A father now lives in Kaduna while the son is in "Kashanfa" and the mother in Lagos. This is where we all got it wrong! Robbers are not from the moon, they are part of us and we can always get rid of them. The battle line has just been drawn! ~ Abdullah Abdulganiy is a columnist for Signals NG and director of The Light Column. |
In those days, a student of any reputable University in Nigeria enjoys a number of privileges, ranging from free feeding, free tuition, free housing and many others. The question is; where are they today? Ditto to the above, students are treated like kings and queens in those days, they are given exotic cars to drive immediately after graduation as we learnt, numerous jobs await them after the completion of their academic career. The question still remains where are those beautiful things today? With the current dire situation faced by students, specifically undergraduates in prospective Nigerian universities today, one might come to think and ask himself that, When did students become riff-raff in the society. It is only in an insane society like Nigeria, students become subjects of social ridicule, are subjected to dehumanisation and psychological trauma all in the name of acquiring basic knowledge. In sane societies like Saudi Arabia, the United States among others, the welfarism of students is an utmost priority to the government. This is due to the fact that, these countries' governments know fully well that, students - particularly the readers among them - are the leaders of tomorrow. Looking at the case of Nigerian universities, one might come to conclude that Nigeria is an insane society. Education is an essential part among the different parts that made up the society. The Functionalist theory advocators therefore held that when the educational institution is affected, all other parts that hold the society, thus serving as pillars will eventually be problematic in the nearest future. The utmost welfarism of the citizenry is a salient role to be carried out by the Government of a country. Similarly, the welfarism of the students is a compulsory task to be executed by the Management. The case of the University of Ilorin's students has revealed that students are no more worthy to the management of the institution. Students are conveyed to their various homes by trucks meant for transporting sands, granites and cows. I repeat, when did students become Cows and Sands? Bad transportation system has been one of the challenges battling the institution in the recent past. One should expect the University authority to have overridden this problem for long because the institution is an embodiment of Sociologists, Social Workers and co who proffer solutions to social problems birthed by Social interaction and integration. At least, the University authority should have adopted the Bottom - Up approach - consulting the students and seeking their opinions on the solution to the problem on ground - in mitigating against this social anathema and malady resulting to students' failure in the academic parlance. Some students due to the bad transportation system were not able to attend classes fixed and slated for morning, having it in mind that this does not deter and hinder some lecturers from conducting tests when they feel the class population is scanty. Indeed, the transportation imbroglio has been a factor responsible for the array of carry overs that could be gotten in some courses. This week, some of my colleagues and I had to wait for an hour or beyond before getting a single bus that will convey us to school. Funny enough, the amount incurred on transport expenses is a shocking and enslaving one. Buses meant for N50 are now N70, the one for N100 now N120. Spending N200 or above to just go in and out of the school is indeed alarming. This excludes the expenses incurred on feeding and some miscellaneous. This "together we can mantra" by the Students Union officials cannot work unless you fight for our welfarism which is the main reason you are voted for. In order not to make the whole scenario appear as if this critism is destructive, I hereby proffer some solutions to the transportation system of the University. - More buses should be bought by the University authority in order to make the number of buses available enough for the conveying of students in and out the school premises. During my 100 level days, our school buses were up to 5 or 6 if I am not mistaken, now we have just 3 available. Where are the others? Should they be decreasing or increasing? - There should also be adjustment in the timetable in a way to make some people free for a day so as to reduce the huge number of people going to the school for a particular day. - Freshers too should be orientated. This is Unilorin, an higher institution, not your secondary school. In secondary schools, you must be present in school everyday. But in Unilorin, if you have a lecture-free day, you can "chilax" for your house FAA!. Where is Simply Move? - The number of candidates admitted to the University should also reduce "if" their welfarism - transportation - cannot not be catered for. By so doing, buses will be awaiting students, and the case will not be on the contrary that students will be awaiting buses to convey them. This should be the normal direction! Also, the issue of the students being treated like Cows and Sands in terms of transportation will reduce to the bearest minimum. This is the awful situation we find ourselves in. As distant as the school gate is to the main study vicinity, some students deemed it fit to trek it after they have been perturbed by the frustrating and infuriating transportation condition of the institution. If the solutions contained in this text are strictly followed, then together we can curb the problem of transportation in Unilorin. From a concerned Unilorite! Together we can! Yesterday at 10:17a |
In any democratic setting, the major function of the Legislature is to make laws, and more importantly serve as check on the Executive when it seems to trespass, the Nigerian Legislature has been and is still a grotesque misrepresentation of a true Legislature, Instead of corroborating with the Executive in fighting corruption, It presents itself as instigating corruption as a fundamental bane of development and progress in the society. Without doubt, The 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is antagonistic with the fight against corruption as established by the Buhari led Administration one way or the other, it has indeed shown some traits of disinterest in this battle, Some of these notable traits include, the non confirmation of Magu as the Chairman of EFCC, Magu is very qualified for this honourable position but with the corrupt minded state of our Senators, he was unconfirmed, this implies that most of them have skeleton in their cupboards, most of them have series of cases with the EFCC, and such they believe that if Magu should later become the Chairman of EFCC the cases will be re-opened and justice will be done because Magu is a no nonsense man like our president, this is just by the way, and also on the one hand. On the other hand, I heard and saw from various media platforms that the Senate had okay five-year jail and #10 million fine for false whistle blowing, after studying this carefully, I concluded by saying it is a way of restraining people from blowing whistle, With this, Fear has been created on the mind of every individuals, Nobody will dare blow whistle again even when it is not a false one. Have it in mind that, this is a constraint on every Nigerians from blowing whistle which had proved to be very fruitful in detecting corrupt fellows, this is another point depicting that the Senators are all corrupt even corruption except very few of them. Who should encourage whistle blowing more other than the Senators if they truly want a corrupt free Nigeria. Karl Marx said it all "the idea of the ruling class is the ruling idea", the masses are not given the privilege to talk, when the rich commits any illegality, the poor pay for it, but in every circumstances there is still a way out, don't forget this is a democratic setting, the majority still own the power, if only we can all recall our Senators then Nigeria can become great because most of them are corrupt minded individuals, Infact the 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is a CARICATURE and a GROTESQUE MISREPRESENTATION of a true Legislature, In Marx's word " Conflict is the engine of Change", Let us all restructure Nigeria by recalling all these incompetent law makers, this is Democracy and the power lies in the hand of the Majority. Recently, the Acting President of Nigeria in person of Professor Yemi Osibanjo wrote to the National Assembly with the aim of seeking the confirmation of the noble Senate of one the nominees of the presidency in person of Mr Femi Gbajamiala, the plenary which was presided by the Senate President was in total opposition and rejection of the nominee presented by the Presidency. All the senators stood up to antagonise the confirmation of Mr Gbajamiala and even threatened to unseat the Senate President if he reads further another letter of confirmation to the hearing of the house. Moreso, In the plenary the issue of the Acting Chairman of EFCC in person of Mr Ibrahim Magu was raised along the line, where one of the senators, Sen. Dino Melaye claimed that Magu came for a job interview and failed, (the reason for the failure yet to be disclosed) and as such he was rejected, yet the executive still maintained his post as the Acting Chairman of EFCC, Sen Dino noted that, it is a deprivation of the legislature's function to confirm, which presumes to be one of the basic functions of the Legislature. This made both the Executive and Legislature of the federal republic of Nigeria appear in a way of being discordant, the Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El Rufai however noted that the general observation is that the Legislature, especially the National Assembly seems to be antagonistic of the "Fight Against Corruption" as proposed by the Executive arm of government. The major concern of this write up is to look into the reason why the National Assembly refused to confirm Mr Ibrahim Magu as the Chairman of EFCC, as it appears that there are a number of hidden agendas behind this issue, and one of the basic functions of Science is to explain the causal analysis of a particular phenomenon, From my own observations so far which might be myopic to some other people, but somehow justify the causal analysis of the inconsistency and incongruity, I have been able to gather that Ibrahim Magu owes the Senate nothing for him to be rejected but for his "Educational Qualification and Expertise" in detecting corrupt persons and investigating them thoroughly, this gave the Senators sleepless nights and a lot of worries. What could be more giving the Senators step back than this, Magu is a very honest personnel, merits all the criteria that allows one occupy that honourable post, gathered the various achievements and techniques in fostering the fight against corruption which is the core objective of the Buhari led administration. The rejection of Magu by the Senators presents them to be antagonistic of the Fight against Corruption and thereby making majority to conclude that they have skeleton in their cupboard. For the benefit of all Nigerian citizens, the citation and qualifications of Mr Ibrahim Magu which gives the Nigerian Senators sleepless nights has been compressed and summarised into a readable length which is not time consuming, just glance through it and conclude on the basis of what you read. Ibrahim Mustafa Magu, the new acting Chairman of Economic and financial Crimes Commission(EFCC) a is a Kanuri from Borno state. Ibrahim Magu attended the University of Maiduguri where he obtained a degree in Accountancy. Hence he is now a certified accountant, a trained financial crimes investigator with background in forensic accounting, and he also trained at the FBI institute and the London Metropolitan Police institute. Ibrahim Magu served as head of the EFCC’s Economic Governance Unit (EGU) during the tenure of Nuhu Ribadu. He thereafter gained public attention when he led many high profile investigations against former governors including James Ibori of Delta State and the current Senate President Bukola Saraki of Kwara State. He also reportedly worked with Ribadu to jail his brother-in-law and former Bank of the North chief, Shettima Bulama. Bulama was later pardoned by former President Goodluck Jonathan. Ibrahim Magu is a member of the investigative committee convened by National Security Adviser (NSA), Babagana Monguno on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari to probe the procurement of arms in the Armed Forces from 2007 till now. Ibrahim Magu has been described by Police sources as “ a fearless investigator who can stand up to any duty,”. Mr. Magu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police, is a member of the Presidential Advisory Committee on Anti-Corruption and was a former Head of the Economic Governance Unit (EGU) of the anti-graft agency. Mr. Magu was one of the early recruits into the EFCC by the pioneer chairman of the commission, Nuhu Ribadu. He is seen by peers as an incorruptible and courageous officer and then made the head of the sensitive EGU, a unit in charge of investigations of senior public officials. As head of the EGU, some of the investigations Mr. Magu spearheaded include the role of former Kwara State Governor and serving senator, Bukola Saraki, in the collapse of Societe Generale Bank of Nigeria, and James Ibori, former Governor of Delta State, who was convicted for money laundering in the United Kingdom. But trouble started for the police officer after the controversial removal of Mr. Ribadu as chairman of the commission in December 2007. In August 2008, Mr. Magu was accused of illegally keeping case files of top politicians being investigated by the commission. His house in Abuja was searched and his property carted away by operatives of the EFCC. He was subsequently re-deployed to the police after days of detention with nothing incriminating found against him. He was later suspended from the police, going without salaries for several months. Following his appointment as Chairman of the EFCC in 2011, Mr. Lamorde made the return of Mr. Magu to the EFCC a top priority. Both men had worked together at the commission when Mr. Lamorde served as head of operations of the agency. In a letter written to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on March 19, 2012, and titled “Re: Postings/Transfer and secondments of police officers to the EFCC,” Mr. Lamorde put Mr. Magu as top on the list of police officers he wanted to be deployed to the EFCC. But when the police boss was to confirm the deployment of the officers, Mr. Magu’s name was conspicuously absent. Mr. Lamorde eventually had his way after President Goodluck Jonathan reportedly intervened in Mr. Magu’s case. Following the President’s intervention, Mr. Magu was released to the EFCC. He remained a top official of the commission until he was appointed to succeed Mr. Lamorde. He is to take over from Ibrahim Lamorde who Femi Adesina, the presidential spokesman said “ was not sacked but was only proceeding on terminal leave ahead of the expiration of his tenure in February 2016.” The acting Chairman of the commission took over officially on November 11, 2015 and during the handing over ceremony at the commission’s office in Abuja, Magu called on all staff of EFCC to get positioned for a greater fight against corruption in Nigeria. The new acting chairman said with corruption, there would never be a meaningful development in Nigeria. He said he has come to the commission to “ ginger up the anti-corruption campaign“. “ There is the need to make sure that whatever is gotten for common use did not end up in private pockets ,” Magu said. He further called all staff of the commission to personally channel their grievance to him as he will be solely responsive to the welfare of EFCC’S staff. “ I am ready and willing to work with everybody without any primordial concerns,” the new acting chairman said. Curled from; http://www.nigerianbiography.com/2015/11/biography-of-ibrahim-mustafa-magu.html?m=1 From the above, I will say the ball is in your court, ponder over it and you will discover the hidden agenda of the National Assembly of Nigeria, Magu will surely ensure proper investigation on corrupt practice's in Nigeria, He is qualified and well ready to serve his father land, so why the delay and refusal?. It is apparent that one of the major challenges in the world right from time is examination malpractice in the educational sector, Infact, It is the bane of development in any country of the world, It deters national development by enabling those who are not capable to hold various public offices emerge as the holder of those offices, this is as a result of the fact that they lack basic and elementary knowledge about the post they hold but their certificates depicts that they are qualified, this is possible by the means of examination malpractice, Imagine a person who engaged in examination malpractice throughout his or her educational life without having a scope of what he studied, because he attained success via Examination Malpractice, when it is time to apply those knowledge he claimed to study it will be very hard for him, For example, He has been appointed as a mathematics teacher because his certificate shows he is very sound in Mathematics, by implication he will end up teaching the students rubbish, thus the standard of those students' education has been eroded and thereby leading to the continuity of ignorance among majority of the students, he has mar educational development as a result of his ignorance which was triggered by Examination Malpractice. It is therefore important to look into the concept of Examination Malpractice as a social malaise and the various ways of mitigating it and reducing it to the bearest minimum. The word Examination Malpractice is a composition of two different words as it appears, Examination on the one hand refers to a formal test involving answering written or oral questions with no or limited access to text books or the like while Malpractice on the other hand means improper or unethical conduct, Merging the two words together, Examination Malpractice refers to any unethical conduct or behaviour an individual indulges in during examination. In a more elaborative form, It is the act of cheating in the course of examination, Cheating in this context refers to any activity carried out before, during, and after an examination by a candidate or agents that distorts the expected outcome of an examination. In this, we have been able to gather that Examination Malpractice could be done in three different stages, - Before Examination : This occurs prior the examination and it is basically done by having access to the questions before the conduction of examination, which invariably results to the distortion of the normal examination outcome. - During Examination : This occurs in the examination hall where different aids are brought to distort the normal examination outcome, this involves bringing in various inscriptions that will guide an individual in the course of the examination. - After Examination : This occurs after the examination is conducted, but before the result is released, this is done by pleading to the marker to influence the result as a result of satisfying the marker by cash or kind. It is also understandable from the above definition that it is not only the examinee that facilitates the process of Examination Malpractice, as it also involves the examiner who may also influence the outcome of an examination as a result of him been satisfied in cash or kind. Examination malpractice has proven to be a devastating phenomenon in the educational sector as it erodes capability in the students and serves as a deceit in judging individuals intellectually based on their certificates. It further disables students from reading because a shortcut to success has been established, thus the level of educational exposure of the students become low. In Nigeria, one of the causes of the problem we are facing today is Examination Malpractice because it has enabled those who are not capable to emerge as head of different sectors they have little or no knowledge about, judging them based on their result they achieved via Examination Malpractice. Examination Malpractice is indeed the bane of development in Nigeria and the world today because it enhances mistrust, deters educational advancement, enables the students to feel relaxed which will definitely bring a consequential effect of national regression. More so, Examination Malpractice is a serious problem to the educational sector and according to the functionalist school of thought, the society is similar to a living organism which has different parts in which educational sector seems to be one of them, and it holds that when a part is affected by any problem others too share that same problem with it. Such that when the economic sector is affected with challenges the entire sectors get affected, As there is economic recession in Nigeria, the educational sector tend to increase the fees for tuition because the cost of school materials are now high which may result to the withdrawal of some students as a result of the increased tuition fees, More so the teachers tend to reduce the time spent because they don't longer have enough money to purchase food that will provide them the strength to work for long. In short, the parts of the society are highly connected, a diminution in the standard of the educational sector results to the distortion of the whole parts of the society. Another major issue to look into is the solutions to the problem of examination malpractice, as it has been established that examination malpractice is a social problem the next line of action is to provide solution to it in order to enhance the betterment of the society. There should be the introduction of active moral education in the school curriculum where students are made to encourage the societal mores and values, and where the punishment of those who disobey these societal rules and norms are read to the hearing of the students. By implication, the punishment for examination malpractice should also be made known to the students and they should also be taught that Examination Malpractice brings about a bad stigma to an individual in the society and this stigma remains forever. Another way of curbing examination malpractice is through the enactment of certain rules and regulations that makes students run away from examination malpractice, these laws should be pasted in the walls of every educational institutions particularly during examination and this rule should be made effective. For example, the enactment of imprisonment law in Nigeria and if possible the suspension or expulsion of those who practice examination malpractice. More so, the family institution has a crucial role to play in terms of socialising their children and making them know in the process of Socialisation that examination malpractice is bad, the parents should serve as a good example for the upcoming children, and every parent should monitor the affairs of their children both inside the school and outside the school. Finally, Individuals should also care for the kind of friends they hang out with because peer group largely influence the life of an individual, hence, if one keeps friendship with those who engage in examination malpractice there is high tendency that they influence him or her. Conclusively, The value of our educational institutions and education itself in Nigeria could be lifted high if the problem of examination malpractice becomes past, Examination malpractice affects the development of educational sectors and an injury to a part of the society is an injury to all. Recently, a debate came up among Nigerians on the issue of restructuring the country, whilst some people are of the view that Restructure is the only solution to our cancerous problematic state, On the contrary, others perceive those clamouring for Restructure as been confused and more likely to be political opportunists. This issue has become more rampant in the daily discourses of Nigerians as it does not only apply to the political leaders alone but also the citizens, the trending and latest craze and fad in Nigeria today is Restructure, even to the extent that those who know less about the dynamics of politics and power play agitate for Restructure. With these diverse and dissimilar opinions, Pertinent questions that are worthy to be answered arise and have been raised, What does Restructure really connotes, Is it so essential, necessary and germane to restructure Nigeria as a country, and what are we really restructuring on the part of Nigeria, these are topical questions circumambulating the idea of Restructure. Before examining the relevance of Restructure in mitigating the problematic state of Nigeria, It is so salient to look into the concept of Restructure in totality, Fundamentally, Restructure means to alter the structure of something, In other words, to effect a fundamental change in an organisation. Perceiving restructure from the above, I can vividly say that Nigeria is needy of Structural change because the way our political, economic and legal structures run is indeed devastating and retarding, In fact, our democratic setting is a grotesque and caricature type, and that is the main reason why democracy will never favour us in this country, the elites adopt this so called Democracy as a covert to the entire citizens of Nigeria and as such oppressing and exploiting them and creating uneven access to the national revenue. Restructure is very important in the case of Nigeria, problems erupt every now and then, the economy is in turmoil, the national security of lives and properties is at stake, ethnic, tribal, and religious crises are also there, the cost of living is so high, the question to be raised now is, Are we pleased with the current situation of Nigeria?, If No, then "Restructure" is crucial and vital in remodelling the existing structure of Nigeria as a country standing on a very weak foundation, and as such very muck likely to collapse. The basic aspect of the Nigerian society that needs to be restructured with an immediate effect which will invariably lead to the development, renaissance, revival and resuscitation of other aspects and structures is the Economy, Of course, there is a much more need for the Economic Restructure than any other because it determines the fate of other societal parts, this, Marx termed in his own analysis as "Economic Determinism". When a country's economy is relatively gigantic, other parts of the society also tend to rise, because more funds are generated to standardise the educational sector, pay up judges to facilitate " Independent Judiciary" which is the backbone of Justice that is demanded in every society. However, the concentration on other parts too should not be overlooked as these parts work harmoniously to bring up a progressive society needed by the citizens. For Instance, Political Instability in a way or the other affects the state of a country's economy, Educational orientation also go a long way in training youths who will eventually become the leaders of tomorrow and will determine the country's economic fate. In one sentence, It is not very correct to say that restructure in a part is important than the others but preference is attached to a particular one which is the economy because it goes a long way in assessing the developmental state of a country. The economic advancement serves as a medium of measuring a country's development level, Walter Rodney noted in his classical work "How Europe underdeveloped Africa" that those countries that are referred to as underdeveloped have retarding economy. Assessing the economic structure of Nigeria, it is acceptable by all that the economy is a falling one day by day, Industries in Nigeria are very minute, scanty and countable and there is enough landmass, Agriculture is given less consideration, the focus is only on petroleum, even the petrols are often refined outside the country which leads to depreciating incomes gotten from this petroleum, the masses do not benefit from the income generated from this petroleum and this made a lot of Nigerians to be poor, they can hardly provide the basic three square meals for themselves, Another major problem facing the economy is Unemployment, most of the qualified citizens of Nigeria, who are keenly searching for job are not able to get a well paid job, most of them are underemployed in most instances. The advent of petroleum does not necessarily pose the economic depression faced in Nigeria today but the inability to manage the revenues gathered from the exportation of petroleum, the incomes are concentrated in the hand of few people in the society and it is not properly used for national projects. Chief Awolowo sponsored free education with the income generated from cocoa, the petroleum we are blessed with could generate double or better still triple of the revenue generated from cocoa, but the problem lies in the efficient management of the revenues generated from this petroleum by our political leaders, they only use it to fill their own pocket without creating the societal needs and social infrastructures for all. If there is a restructure in the economic structure of Nigeria by efficiently managing the revenues generated from it, and diversifying the economy, there will be a Renaissance in the economy of Nigeria which will invariably lead to the revival of other parts. Another aspect that need to be restructured is the political sector, Of course we are practising a democratic system of government in Nigeria but in a "grotesque" manner, Our executive, legislature, and Judiciary arms that make up the government are caricatures in the pragmatic and real sense, In other democracy practising countries, the political rulers are mostly the poorest but reverse is the case in Nigeria, the political elites are on top of the country. Therefore, A restructure should be properly carried out in this realm, politics should be seen as an instrument for serving the general masses rather than enriching of pockets. The Judiciary should be well paid in order to make the judges independent, and a serious castigation should be carried out on anyone found misusing his or her political office, and the principle of rule of law and checks and balances should be well observed, In Nigeria, political elites are made to be above the law in the sense that they are not castigated for their grievous offences, In short, Restructure should be made in this parlance by practising democracy as it is ought to be practised. Other aspects that need to be restructured include the educational sector which serves as the major formal institution for socialising individuals and teaching them good values in the society, Moral studies should be included in the school curriculum and schools should be financed properly and teachers should be made independent, and given the room to criticise the government if there is need for that, strictly confirmed by the right or freedom of expression, Many a times, what should be taught in school is well monitored by the government in such a way that teachers are not granted the audacity and freedom to speak against the government or even the school administration. Moreso, the legal system needs to be reformed to ensure development in Nigeria and the elimination of the chaotic state of the country, the health institutions should also be restructured and other relevant parts or institutions contributing harmoniously to the growth of Nigeria as a country. In Conclusion, A drastic measure should be taken to effect changes in the way things are going in Nigeria because the system seems to be unfriendly and very harsh on every citizens. More so, In restructuring, all the basic institutions in Nigeria should be considered because corruption has spread it's tentacles to all sectors in Nigeria, more importantly, the restructure too should start from individual's home by teaching what is right and guiding the movement of your children, wards and relatives in order to make Nigeria attain greater height, thus let the change begins with you. Undoubtedly, Nigeria has been wallowing in the shackles of unemployment, thus a sizeable and aggregate citizens of Nigeria are unemployed and jobless, they keeping moving around the streets with their certificates and talents yet no employment opportunities, This fact does not in any way need a statistical analysis to be proved authentic as mere observation will tell that most Nigerians are unemployed, but to make this piece of writing more empirical and scientific, reference shall be made to substantiate this argument or opinion. It is shameful to think of, a country with arable lands, natural resources, good climatic conditions still tackle the menace of joblessness among its citizens. How far has Nigeria gone to observe some other countries in the world without adequate natural resources as Nigeria do but they provide the basic needs of their citizens with employment inclusive. In the United States of America and the host of others, when you are enrolled into an institution you are equally given the opportunity to work in order to earn a living, this is because there are adequate jobs provided for their citizens there, unlike Nigeria, where students suffer and face difficulties just to raise their school fees. It is about time we concentrate on this area in Nigeria, the number of those that are gainfully employed in Nigeria today is scanty, Infact those that are employed are given penny that will only sustain them for a very short period of time, cater for their transport fare and feedings alone, and thereby deterring them from attending to all other affairs of theirs' that involve money. While some people are earning billions of naira per month, others cannot raise a thousand naira per day. People here and there have been frustrated to commit suicide, join robbers squad and engage in rituals due to the problems posed by lack of funds via Unemployment. Unemployment is a social malaise, it prevents a country from growing higher by depreciating the value of tax to be collected per annum, for it is only those who are gainfully employed that will be triggered to pay tax from what they earn, how about those who are jobless?, and unfortunately taxation goes a long way in helping the government to provide basic amenities in the state, when a large proportion of people are not paying tax due to the fact that they are jobless, who will lose at the end of the day?, and hence, It hinders the progress of the state. On this basis therefore, Unemployment threatens the development of the society, thus it is a social problem. The question now is what is unemployment?, why are people unemployed?, what is the yardstick of measuring unemployment in the society?, with special reference to Nigeria. To a lay man, Unemployment is the state of not being employed but in a more comprehensive approach, It is the situation whereby individuals who are of the working age class are not able to get a gainful employment opportunity, on the same vein, individuals who are already employed but the salary or wages given to them is not capable of catering for their needs are said to be underemployed which is also a brother to unemployment. According to Investopedia, Unemployment is a phenomenon that occurs when a person who is actively searching for employment is unable to find work, the above definitions suggest three key factors before a person could be seen as unemployed, -Active search for job. -Within the working age. -A specific period of time. The aforementioned factors are the yardsticks for measuring unemployment status of an individual, when one is actively searching for job, of the working age, within a specific period usually less than a year, and he or she is unable to find one, then he is unemployed. It has appeared in the case of Nigeria that many youths and adults are unable to find a paid job and therefore they walk around the streets as idlers, On the contrary, some god fathers and politicians are there gaining millions per month doing nothing but to sit in their various offices and think of how to exploit the people instead of exploring the country which is their primary assignment, Every Nigerian whether educated or not educated is entitled to a well paid job to be provided by the government, but unfortunately, our government instead to venture on providing employment opportunities are busy with other things that are detrimental to the progress of the country. According to Nigeria Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the country’s unemployment rate has risen from 13.3 per cent in the 2nd quarter to 13.9 per cent in the 3rd quarter of 2016. This is contained in the Unemployment/Under-employment Report for 3rd Quarter of 2016. The report stated that the number of unemployed in the labour force increased by 555,311 persons. According to the report, the underemployment rate rose from 19.3 per cent in second quarter to 19.7 per cent in the third quarter. The report said that unemployment covered persons (aged 15–64) who during the reference period were currently available for work, actively seeking for work but were without work. Underemployment, however, occurs when a person works less than full time hours, which is 40 hours, but work at least 20 hours on average a week. It explained that underemployment could also happen if a person works full time but are engaged in an activity that underutilises his skills, time and educational qualifications. The report, however, stated that the economically active population or working age population (persons within ages 15 and 64) increased from 106.69 million in second quarter to 108.03 million in the third quarter. “This represents a 1.26 per cent increase over the previous quarter and a 3.57 per cent increase when compared to the third quarter 2015.’’ In 3rd quarter, the labour force population (i.e those within the working age population willing, able and actively looking for work) increased to 80.67 million from 79.9 million in second quarter. “This represents an increase of 0.98 per cent in the labour force during the quarter.(Vanguard, Nigeria "Nigeria’s unemployment rate rises to 13. 9 % – NBS" .The unemployment rate keeps increasing year by year, this is not expected of a serious government which has the people's welfarism as it's priority, the consequential effects of unemployment is very bad, Infact it has generated a lot of criminals and robbers in our society. Most of the robbers caught are found unemployed, the most tragedic part is that graduates are also found in this unruly operations because they are not gainfully employed, this suggests that it is not only the illiterates that are unemployed but also the literate fellows. Not quite long, Dangote Industry was in need of drivers, surprisingly those who applied for this post include degree holders, In short, Nigeria's case of unemployment is nothing to write home about. The government is doing nothing to tackle the issue of unemployment in Nigeria, many Structural Adjustment Programmes have been initiated but proved futile because those handling this programmes took it as a medium of enriching their pockets instead of that of the general masses. Some are given clippers, grinding machines and lots more that will not last for months due to the fact that they are counterfeit, Is this all we can get from our government in ameliorating and mitigating unemployment in Nigeria?, It is sad to hear that, the present administration aims at giving #5000 to our youths who are unemployed, this makes me laugh in Canada, how many people will this reach, if it were to reach some people what will they benefit from it?, instead of creating industries that will boost the country's economy and in turn serve as employment opportunity to the general public, frivolities are given preference. Unemployment has been traced as the causative agents of enormous crime acts, hence if there could be reduction in the rate of unemployment invariably there will be reduction in crime rate, If I have gone to my workplace throughout the day, how will I gain the strength to steal at night, thus the idle hand is the devil's workshop It has appeared that the government are not in any way willing to help the youths in getting employed, or is it the #5000 given to them that will solve or eradicate unemployment?, Interestingly, the ball is in our courts, we got the potentials, ability and all it takes to be gainfully employed and even become employer, this is possible when we make up our minds not to give a damn to government employment opportunities again, but rather creating employment ourselves, Most of the affluent people in the world today created jobs themselves and they did not wait for the so called government to provide for them, It's in you, create a job today, how you brand and package it matters a lot. Secondly, People have seen Western education as very important than any other thing, thus if you are not educated you can't make it in life, this is a wrong orientation, we have seen many graduates outside there roaming about the streets baselessly, and those on top the country's economy are more or less uneducated in the Western type, with your skill and talent you can become someone important in life and build something beneficial to the society. Nevertheless, Western Education is also important but does not determine the successfulness of an individual. In conclusion, If government after pleading to them are not willing to do better things to help reduce the unemployment rates, the youths and every other citizens are very much ready to create something new in the society and thereby generating employment in Nigeria. Our government spend on things of less importance forgetting the welfarism of citizens as promised in their various manifestos. In the spirit of making Nigeria attain the highest level of development and driving it towards national efficiency in all ramifications, It is therefore important to see cooperation as our watchword, eschew tribal segregation and disregard any form of religious intolerance among ourselves. Nigeria is a multi ethnic and religious nation, thus, it encompasses different tribes with different cultures, different religions with different beliefs, and different persons with different orientations and opinions, All these factors are drivers to conflict in any society, when the society operates a heterogeneous system there is high tendency that conflict erupts every now and then, but the only way this could be deterred and solved is by a key concept which is "Tolerance", Futhermore, by adhering or cleaving to other people's correction about our wrongs in the society, there will be a drastic reduction in conflictual relationship and when there is a minimum rate of conflict be it political, religious, ethnic, amongst others, we become unite, and when unity is constant we can never be divided and our country moves forward in development. It is high time we saw ourselves as one in Nigeria, not quite long ago America enacted a law that " let there be no difference between the Americans ", In other words, All Americans are one, thus there is no superiority inferiority complex between the Northern Americans and other parts of America, So far so good, with this law America has been able to move in a very fast pace to higher level of development, Today, The United State of America is one of the richest countries in the world in all ramifications. If Nigeria could also adopt this kind of policy, tribal segregation amongst others will be reduced to a nearest minimum, thus " Let there be no difference between Nigerians. Conflict (of any form) is a destructive agent to a country's unity and progress, if it persists, it can turn a rich country to a poor one, a populated country to a scanty one, and a developed country to an underdeveloped one. Therefore, It is beneficial to disregard conflict in all ramifications by a substantial element, which is Tolerance. By tolerance, we tend to endure the disgusting things coming from others which is always constant, the level of bigotry in the society tends to reduce though it is part and parcel of human that we tend to see our own group as better than others, our opinions as relevant than others, therefore we are Ethno-centrists and Opinion-centrists, but by tolerance the mechanism of ethnocentric orientation in our thoughts tend to be reduced and a level of relativism in the aspect of culture, tribe, and religion is introduced. The major problem facing Nigeria is coming from it's inhabitants and occupants in the sense that we learn to be conservative in our thinking, we do not want to accept or entertain others opinions or views especially in the area of religion, culture and traditions, and individual orientations, and the only way this problem could be solved is by tolerating the views of others, what is bad is bad, there is no justification for it, Ethnocentrism is bad. The Christians should not see their dogmas as better than that of the traditional worshippers, the Igbos should equally not belief in any way that their cultural content or heritage is superior to that of the Hausas as we are all equal, don't see the fault of other people's tribe and culture, In fact it is well stated in the holy book (Quran) that " Do not abuse the gods of those who are pagans, hence they abuse your own Lord". Also there was a discussion between two of our past leaders in Nigeria, Sir Ahmadu Bello and Dr Nnamdi Azikwe, Azikwe noted that we should forget our differences as Nigerians but Bello was against him and said we should learn to understand our differences, Both are still on the same direction and that is Tolerance among Nigerians. Conclusively, Nigeria can only be progressive, forward if the idea of tolerance or toleration is observed duly and strictly in all courses of our endeavour, More so, Every Nigerian should take his or her medicine and stop turning deaf hear. Most countries in the world use the appellation, democratic society in order to signify to other states that they are democratic. In a UNESCO survey carried out in 1962 practically every country in the world claimed to be democratic. Therefore the etymology of the word Democracy must be considered and also the varied conceptions and conceptualisations of political scholars on Democracy will be checked. The word Democracy got its root from two Greek words demos and kratei, which mean "the people rule". Explaining the two words in to to, People refer to the citizens body which consist mainly of adults both males and females and the children, On the other hand, Rule refers to any legislative decision, principle, guideline. Merging the two terms together, Democracy could be conceived of as a system of government in which the general public decides any governmental or political policies and the affair of the state. This decision could be in two forms and this identifies the types of Democracy, It could be in the situation whereby the general public without the exemption of anybody makes decision on how they will be governed and rule, this states the Direct Democracy. On the other hand, It could be in the form whereby the citizens of a country elect their representatives who will represent them in the various government offices, and this outlines the Representative Democracy. Democracy got its origin as a practice in the ancient Athens State. Abraham Lincoln conceptualised Democracy as the government of the people, by the people, and for the people. Democracy as a concept, term, terminology, idea, ideology, and finally a system presumes the fact there should be equal rights and opportunities between the citizens,it also accord primacy to the constitution, and the rule of law is strictly observed. More so the features of a Democratic system of government including its merits and demerits should also be checked in order to establish a full knowledge on what Democracy actually connotes. Democracy as defined as the system of government where the citizens are accorded the right to govern themselves either directly or representatively for a fixed period of time usually 4years or 6years as it differs from country to country. Democracy exhibits the following features; -RESPECT FOR INDIVIDUALS' RIGHT -PERIODIC ELECTION -FIXED TERM IN OFFICE -SUPREMACY OF THE CONSTITUTION -PROTECTION OF INDIVIDUALS' LIBERTY -EQUALITY BEFORE THE LAW -ACCOUNTABILITY OF LEADERS TO THE FOLLOWERS -RULE OF LAW -PRIMACY TO THE MAJORITY -PRINCIPLE OF CHECKS AND BALANCES MERITS OF DEMOCRACY Democracy as a system of government is a very nice system to be practised as it serves a lot of advantages in its setting, Some of these advantages include; In a democratic system of government, the citizens' rights are fully protected, unlike the military system of government where one doesn't have any right except that dictated by the leader. As a result of this individual enjoys a number of right, which includes right to life which is the peak of all other rights, Of course, no one possess the right to terminate another person's life unjustly in a democratic setting. More so, the leader enjoys a fixed term in office if not impeached as a result of him found wanting. Also, the rule of law is well observed and the constitution prevails except in the declaration of state of emergency. In a democratic system, The leaders are accountable to the followers which ensures transparency in the governance, Moreover, everyone is similar in the sight of the law, and the law is always above everybody. DEMERITS OF DEMOCRACY As it is widely known that anything that has its advantages will definitely possess it's disadvantages as it is a game of two sides of a coin. Democracy has been largely criticised by different political thinkers because of the following; Democracy accords primacy to the majority even when they are not on the right path as the majority will always have their way and the minority will only have their say. More so, Democracy could also be seen as the been faulty in its appointment of leaders as those who are not qualified, suitable, educated have the chance to rule once they gain the majority and this leads to bad governance because the state is ruled by one who does not possess the charisma. In addition, There is always delay in decision making as the president himself cannot solely decide on some issues except with the back up of the legislators, whereas there are some issues that need fast and quick attention. Conclusively, Democracy on the path of Nigeria as being a failure because many problems have been attached to it, such as nepotism, favouritism and lack of depth knowledge about what Democracy connotes, So we are thereby urged to go back to our Traditional Political System which has being a success in the past and that is the only way Nigeria can progress unless we practise the so called Democracy as ought to. Consequences of Religious Conflict and Terrorism Introduction It is worth noting that conflict and terrorism are two destructive and deteriorative variables everywhere in the Cosmo as no country would perceive or view conflict or terrorism to be of good outcome. It largely and mostly leads to destruction and hinders the development of a developing nation, therefore this text will introduce the conceptualisation of conflict and terrorism to the entire readers and as well proffer possible solutions to religious conflict and terrorism in Nigeria. Content Conflict according to Merriam Webster is a strong disagreement between two individuals or groups. From this it could be categorically said that when clash of interest exists between two distinctive individuals or groups, conflict is believed to occur. Conflict exists in every part of the world as no country will attain total agreement, peace, and cooperation, Even within brothers of the same mother conflict exists and that is why Abdulganiy A. O 2016 posited that in every society there is always cooperation, conflict, and adjustment. From this, one can deduce that there is possibility adjustment occurs after conflict but not in all ramifications. The best option is that when conflict occurs, one should adjust and settle it before leading to mass killing and destruction. Terrorism on the one hand is the use of violent act to frighten and disturb people in an area. Terrorism stems out from unresolved conflict,In other words Terrorism is the consequence and result of unsettled conflict. Religious Conflict therefore presupposes the act of strong disagreement between two or more religious groups or bodies. For instance when there is a disagreement between the Muslims of Kano and its Christians that occurrence is said to be religious conflict. As it has been stated that terrorism is the result of unsettled conflict, invariably religious terrorism will also be the consequence of unresolved religious conflict. CAUSES OF RELIGIOUS CONFLICT AND TERRORISM IN NIGERIA. -Provocative Statements -Protection of Religious/Self Interest -Blind Imitation Of Religious Leaders -Misinterpretation Of Scriptural Verses CONSEQUENCES OF RELIGIOUS CONFLICT AND TERRORISM IN NIGERIA -Division Of a United Nation -Destruction Of a Nation -Mass Death -Fear Of Entering Religious Places -Mistrust Of Religious Leaders POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS TO RELIGIOUS CONFLICT AND TERRORISM IN NIGERIA -Tolerance -Perfect Understanding of Scriptural Contents - As no religion preaches conflict and terrorism -Prevention of Provocative Statement Conclusion. Religious Conflict is a constant phenomenon but can be reduced if the aforementioned procedures are followed and effectively used. The call to a democratic system of government in Nigeria became popular when the military system of government seems to be pervasive and exploitative to every citizens of Nigeria, In 1960 or there about Nigeria gained her Independence from the hand of the imperialistic Britain, Since then the Republican system of government has been in practice, and things were going well and fine in Nigeria, unfortunately, due to the ethnocentric orientation brought up by Nigerians, civil war popped up in Nigeria, and this led to the fall of power into the hand of the military juntas, thus, military system came into existence. It is important to note that the Military system of government served a very long tenure in the history of Nigeria, and this was followed by brutalism, dictatorship, and over all less respect for human dignity and right. The Military system of government started in 1966 and ended in 1998, though the restoration of a democratic system of government has been made in 1979 to 1983 but this was short lived by a coup d'etat which eventually led to the revival of the Military system of government again in Nigeria. The military system of government was characterised by brutalism, lack of respect for the fundamental human rights, less freedom of movement, speech, association amongst others, there are lot of cases where by people were being treated unfairly and unjustly, individuals have no right in those days except that dictated by the so called military juntas, In those days, secret police system was in use where you dare not speak or express your feelings as against or in contrary to the leaders and go free without being castigated, unlike today where both the old and young are given the freedom to express their feelings against the leaders even to the extent of making it public without being persecuted, all in the name of Democracy. This and many other benefits derived from Democracy as against the Military system spurred the agitation of Nigerians for a Democratic system of government. Interestingly, the clamour for a democratic system of government was achieved in 1999 after the sudden death of the last major military ruler, Gen Sani Abacha in 1998, Obasanjo who was once a military ruler became the first democratic ruler in Nigeria after an election was carried out and this led to the transition to a democratic system from a military system of government in Nigeria. This system of democracy came with equality, respect for human rights and dignity, and end to arbitrary arrest, torture and rule. However, the main focus of this text is to consider if Democracy as a system of government has helped or failed Nigeria. The fact is that Democracy has been a failure in Nigeria since it's inception, more problems have been generated via the so called Democratic system of government, which include, economic and political instability, public looting, indecency, moral decadence among others. Is Democracy worthy of celebration in Nigeria where we sill face economic hardship, underdevelopment among others, Democracy was seen to be the solution and way out to these problems, It is awful and discouraging to hear that an element or substance which is perceived to be the solution to a problem stimulates that same problem, and that is the case of Democracy in Nigeria. Of course, Democracy as rightly observed by Lincoln to be the government of the people, by the people, and for the people is contradictory in the case of Nigeria because it has been used as a substance by the political holders or politicians to exploit the people, thus it is a covert in the aspect of Nigeria. A reform was done to the definition of Democracy by Lincoln and goes thus, Democracy is the government of the politicians by the politicians and for the politicians. In a true Democracy, the needs of the people are to be cared for, and there should be absolute representativeness of every citizens' wills and aspirations, more so, citizen welfarism should be well monitored and of all equality and the principle of the supremacy of the law should be strictly observed. In fact, the full application of democratic orientations in Nigeria have not been actualised because up till today, Nigerians face many arbitrary detentions, some people are given a kind of special treatment over others, political offices are now seen as business centers and not as humanitarian service providing centers. Of course, many countries inside and outside Africa have been practising Democracy before and after Nigeria and to be candid they are to some extent practising it to their best of ability, unlike Nigeria in which Democracy is more or less like Dictatorship, Nepotism and favouritism have characterised Nigerian Democracy and also exhibits some kind of monarchical traits. America has been practising Democracy for a long period of time and up till date it has favoured them in all ramifications, it has led to the development of the state both economically and socially, because they have been straightforward in their practice of Democracy, while it has on the other hand failed Nigeria because it has not strictly followed the due protocols as established by Democracy itself. Conclusively, In my own opinion, the days of Democracy in Nigeria has been a waste because it has not serve the expected purpose, in short we are just practising a deceitful democracy in Nigeria which is mainly designed to be a covert and has indeed retard the development of Nigeria as a nation, the way out to the problem in Nigeria is either reforming the methodology of practising Democracy or looking for another system that will be done effectively if we feel we are not capable of practising Democracy. Social vices has become the order of the day in every part of the world, every single individual behaves in contrary to the established rules and regulations of the society, while some people blame this on religion, others blame it on family, and the rest on individuals. A typical example of what we are establishing here is the issue of Boko Haram in Nigeria, while some people blame it on the Islamic religion the members of this sect appear to proclaim, others antagonised them and noted that it is not only the Muslims that are involved in Boko Haram, not even the Nigerians alone but others from the neighbouring countries. The issue of Boko Haram has generated a lot of arguments and controversies between the Nigerians which eventually led to tagging the Islamic religion as encouraging violence. Therefore the focus of this work is to examine the correlation between social value and the Islamic religion in relation to Boko Haram phenomenon in Nigeria. First, It is worth noting that the Islamic religion has being in existence since the era of Prophet Ibrahim(Abraham), Allah noted in the Sanctified Quran that "Say(Oh you Muhammad) surely my lord has guided me to the right path, a most right religion, the faith of Ibrahim the upright one, and he was not of the polytheists". Another verse also depicts that Prophet Ibrahim was the one who pioneered the name Muslim, and it goes thus "And strive hard in the way of Allah as you ought to do, He has chosen you and not laid upon you any form of hardship in your religion, the faith of your father Ibrahim, He named you Muslims before........." Going by the two verses in which the former could be seen in Suratul Anham of the glorious Quran and the latter in Suratul Hajj of the holy Quran also, We can easily establish the fact that Islam has been existing back in the days of Prophet Ibrahim till today and shall be forever, The question to be raised now is does Islamic religion contributes to social value or in the other way round social malady or anomie, before the attempt to finalise and answer this question is made, there is a need to check what Islam says about social value. Allah noted in the chapter 103 of the Quran that " I swear by the time, Verily man shall be in loss, Except those who believe and engage in righteousness and enjoin on each other truth and patience . In the chapter above there is an understanding that belief is not the only way to success in Islamic perspective rather righteousness must always follow or work hand in hand with our belief, and with that man can be among those that will be saved from loss by the end time has said by Allah. Another point backing up the fact that Islam and moral values work hand in hand is that, the Prophet of Islam, Muhammad noted that " I have been raised by Allah to perfect good morals and values", coupled with this is the fact that those who the Prophet brought to Islam with his own distinct and commendable attitude are much more than those he preached to verbally. The Prophet was reported to have made an elderly woman revert to Islam by helping her in carrying a bunch of sticks on her head down to her house from the bush, look how beautiful the religion of Islam is and it's Prophet. The relation and interaction of the Prophet with the unbelievers in the city of Mecca was peaceful, he never raised his arms against them, he related with them kindly to the extent that he protected and kept their properties in his custody without taking a dime or a penny from them, and with this he was given the title Al-Ameen (The Trust Worthy). People across the world especially the anti Islamists do say that Islam is indeed attached with terrorism without any traceable evidence for their opinion and stance, Even the Prophet never waged war against the pagans of Makkah except when they attempted to drive the followers of Islam away from the city of Makkah, even though they are bonafide citizens of the city. The disbelievers of Makkah persecuted the Prophet and his followers and upon that the order from God is that they should be patient but not relent, when the persecution appears to be unbearable, the Prophet attempted to migrate to Taif, but this became futile because it has gotten to the notice of the disbelievers of Makkah the attempt to migrate, so they quickly informed the people of Taif not to accept the Prophet and his followers to stay in their land, then the Prophet was rejected, not only that he was stoned by both the old ones and young ones of Taif. More so, the followers of the Prophet also attempted to migrate to Abyssinian in order to lessen the persecution faced by them, but they were blocked by this disbelievers again who went to the king of Abyssinian with the purpose of making the followers of the Prophet a persona non grata in the city of Abyssinian. The pagans went along with many gifts for the king but unfortunately the king made the followers of the Prophet stay in his city because he noticed some similarities between his religion (Christianity) and that of Islam. The last migration of the Prophet and his followers was to Madinah, and this was because this time around the persecution was directed to the Prophet himself, while his followers were in Abyssinian, he was still in Madinah because he has an uncle (Abu Talib) who is ready to protect his life from the pagans who are ready to execute him. Unfortunately, the guardian of the Prophet ( Abu Talib) died and this aroused the attempt of the pagans to kill him, after all his protector is no more, It was in the course of this the Prophet was orded by Allah to migrate to Madina, the people of Madinah welcomed the Prophet and entertained him on getting to their city. This made the pagans of Makkah so depress and waged war against the Prophet in Madinah. The above illustration shows that Islam does not in any way support terrorism, Even the code guiding war in Islam is very strict, when you are engaging in battle against a set of people, you must not kill except from that opponent group, even you must not attempt to kill the women and children of that same group, so saying that the Muslims are terrorists is out of place because Islam does not encourage disorder or terrorism, On this note if any individual claims to be a Muslim and at the same time a terrorist, then he is a nominal Muslim because he lacks the basic understanding of Islam as a religion, perhaps he or she inherited the religion from his or her parent and does not care to understand the religion in depth. Therefore, Boko Haram in Nigeria is not and shall never be an Islamic sect because they kill the general masses, both the Muslims and Christians, they bomb both the Churches and Mosques, The penalty for killing a soul intentionally in Islam is also death, and if by mistake, you pay for the soul and then fast for three months consecutively. Allah noted that "Whoever kill a soul is comparable to he who kill every living soul on the surface of the earth". Conclusively, the only religion that enjoins good moral and social values strictly is Islam because it contains in it's constitution which is the Quran dos and donts which encourage righteousness and discourage social and moral decadence.
