Thank you so ,much. I didn't even bother plus I had no proper guidance or information then, so I just let it go. I avoided any applications that'd have required me to write it again and hopefully it remains that way; this was 2012/2013. Information is power
Alright, It depends on your intended course though. Can I suggest; that you give the test a try, now that you've been powerfully informed? What do you say?

Hi All, my exam is in 11 days, I have been studying for about 4months followed this thread for about 2 months....d closer i get to the exam date the less prepared I feel...the verbal words won't just stick to my brain...need a startegy ASAP....
How have you been preparing for those months? As you inch closer to test date, I recommend that rather than looking for the words to stick, practice more questions on how those words function in sentences and passages, rather than standing alone.

Start with Barron's. Do this for 3 days. Then, move on to Manhattan 5lb Verbal questions.

Cheers!

Wrong question! Try asking: How does masters admissions work in the US, especially for International students (e.g. Nigerians)?

Evening guys. I planned on writing my gre on 18th. I just want to share my reading method with people who hav interest. I can't really say it works cos I have not written my exam but I know it's a good pla. I use roughly8 hours daily to study. I study verbal in the morning cos it's my weak area (mostly 9-1pm) and quant at night. I study vocabs (500 essential words in Manhattan)during the first 2 hours cos vocabs get soporific. I use 5lb to refresh. This is what I do daily. Lastly I take full teston Saturday and Sunday. You can give it a try tho. Money must not waste
"Your head is too valid!" Nice plan.

I would just add that you create some time during the week for review; review concepts, mistakes and new ideas you came across for that week.

All the best!

Did all that and as I type this I am yet to see the result. Apparently, the time most people used to submit their tests in my centre raised red flags to ETS so a board has been set up to investigate it. If their resolution falls against me, I might be required to retake the test either on their tab or on mine. Any which way, the nearest date they might give me will be in January (I know this because I read about some centre that had an issue in October and they rescheduled them for Dec 2nd).

I now need the same hope I implored you to have the other time.
Your last line ended it well. Be strong and hopeful, things will surely get sorted out by God's grace. ETS needs to, at least, carry people along even if they are investigating anything. Your result is on its way bro.

No you can't. When I was to write, I went with another form of identification but wasn't allowed to write the exam. Couldn't go and get my International Passport and come back in time to still meet the exam so I had to forfeit. They're very strict on this and no grammar or form of begging would get you into the hall to sit for the exam with any other form of ID apart from your Int'l Passport.
Oh, so sorry to hear this. So, have you been able to re-schedule and write it?

Please, what WAEC will I take to the embassy. Is it statement of result from my secondary school, or the WAEC you get from the WAEC website or is it the original WAEC from WAEC office. Please interview soon. Going for undergraduate in econs, took WAEC last year. So they told me WAEC is necessary. Thanks!!
Take everything! Since they aren't load. If you have all 3, why not take everything there, and be certain you are not leaving anything to chance. Better to be safe than sorry.

Wish you the best in your interview!

Kudos for writing the dreaded GRE! But these scores don fall your GPA hand oh! My little advice....Forget Fall 2017. Take your time and study for both exams. You need to rewrite both. Target Spring or better still Fall 2018, so that you have more than ample time to prep for the tests. I did the same. I was hoping for Fall 2016 admission but I realized I needed time to prep for GRE, research schools and all. So I forwent that idea just to give ample time to package myself well. No need to rush my dear. America will still be there in 2018. Don't mind Trump. My 2 cents though.
Waoh! Too much sense packed in just one post. Especially in this weakonomy, we need all the research funding we can get. America aint running away. . . Nothing more to add. Danke schoen drhopeful.

Spent d night in a friends house @ Somolu. We talked into d night and only had d privilege of sleeping around 12:04am. Between that time and 3:30am, I checked the time for about 5-7times (Man must not wake up late o). Left d home @ around 4:56am and was a d consulate @ 5:40am.

The transcript goes thus

V.O: GM
Me: Gm ma

VO: Can I have ur passport.......... And I-20 pls
Me: Okay.....(passed it across)

VO: So what's your intent of study
Me: (now I was a little tensed) I intend to go for a Masters in Human Sciences (* I botched a little, said Human sciences instead of Human Services*) where I will be taking courses like .... (Mentioned only one and I immediately forgot all d other courses wey I don cram. Was about to stammer for few secs but Immediately switched to anoda thing instead of trying to remember). These will take an estimate of 36months after which I will be coming back to Nigeria to lecture.

VO: How did you get to know about the school
Me: I searched online for courses related to Food Technology and saw that I could do a masters in Human services with concentration in Food and nutrition

VO: Which school did you graduate from.
ME: I graduated from Yaba College of Technology.

VO: Which course
Me: Food Technology

VO: You graduated in 2013
ME: YES

VO: so what have you been doing since then
ME: I graduated in Nov 2013 after which I went for the compulsory national youth service prog in Aug2014 which lasted till Aug 2015. After which I now teach and prepare students who write UTME/WAEC exams as a tutor while also counselling them on the best courses to choose.

VO: Did you write any standardized exam?
Me: Yes, I wrote GRE

VO: How was your performance
Me: I performed well, very well (for my mind I know I didn't do very well. But I couldn't have said I performed averagely since there is no way to measure well or very well in this context)

VO: How many schools did you apply to
ME: Two. Purdue University and Texas Southern University

Vo: So why did you choose Texas
Me: ( she looked up and focused on me. I also made eye contact. You no fit fear me again!). I have a personal predilection for Interpersonal relationship and the course Human Services was a perfect merge between my passion and my training -Food Technology. Likewise, as an heir presumptive of my community, training garnered will be useful for me when I come back to Nigeria to assume my leadership role.

VO: Who is your sponsor
ME: MY mum's cooperative society

Vo: What does your mum do
Me: She is a teacher and runs a business

VO: What type of business
Me: Imports and Exports of frozen foods ( I exaggerated in here. My mum deals in frozen foods locally but only seldom goes to idiroko/border to purchase goods. *all na importation* )

VO: You said you wrote GRE
Me: Yes

VO: How did you perform
ME: I performed well ( for my mind, I was like, but u don ask before now. Was almost even tempted to look for my copy of gre result and show her.)

Vo: What was your score
Me: 301

VO: What was the individual score
Me: (Now, I guess she saw the part in my I-20 that indicated that English proficiency is required) in Quantitative I had 153, Verbal 148, AWA 3.5

VO: I will be approving your visa. You will need your passport and I-20 while travelling. Kindly check on Monday for your passport. (gave me a white paper.

Me: (Now I was relaxed). Thank you very much and have an awesome day.

All glory to God......
Congrats. Have a safe, sound trip ahead of you.

Help plz ... I took my first GRE test some month back and I'm looking into the area of pharmacology. I had quant 149 and verbal 149. Awa 3.5 GPA 4.09 ...I'm considering a retake. I almost gave up the idea of Msc in US but Drhopeful testimony made me to rethink my options. Please do i stand chance for admission and probably funding because that's the main ish... Your response is needed. Gracia
It's good that you've picked yourself back up from drhopeful's post. Note that he didn't wait around to make sure everything is 'safe' like you're doing now. He simply took the plunge, put in the hard work and backed it with God. Why not do the same? Instead of waiting for someone to give you permission on how and where to apply, follow your guts, re-take the GRE (this would go a long way to boost your profile), shoot out smoking hot pre-app contact letters to profs and never be comfortable until something good happens.

What do you think?

Good day guys, Please a school I am applying to, is requesting for proof of financial statement in the application. I actually have a potential advisor in the school who has said he would check his whole pool of applicants and hope I get a TA, hence I get funded.

Please, my question his, has anyone faced such dilemma? How did you go about that in your application?

Thanks.
The school should be able to admit you or deny you without the financial statement. It's only when you're admitted that they'll need it to confirm if you can pay, if you are not getting any funding. To be sure, ask the grad prog coord.

Greetings to everyone in the house. Please, I'd appreciate any piece of advice from the gurus here with regards to my admission and chances for funding for Fall 2017.

My undergraduate major was Petroleum Engineering and I don't really want to further in that area 'cos it's quite streamlined and also considering the current situation in d upstream sector of d oil n gas industry, I don't think I'd be wise to do Masters in d same field.

I am considering switching to Mechanical Engineering (or something close) which I think has a better job prospects over there in the US.....kindly correct me if I'm wrong. The problem now is that most schools i checked in d US require UG degree in mechanical/aerospace engineering as a prerequisite for Masters/PhD in Mechanical Engineering....which means taking some UG course before d masters program n this requires more money. shocked

Please can anyone kindly help with schools where I can be admitted in Mechanical Engineering with full or partial funding for Fall 2017. Funding of any form (GA, TA, RA, etc) is a priority, and the schools ranking for now doesn't matter to me.

Please, can someone also suggest other STEM courses which I can easily switch to in order to secure funding and for better job prospects after graduation? Ur assistance will be highly appreciated. I want to start applying immediately to meet up with most schools priority deadlines...

Below is a summary of my profile:
UG Degree: Petroleum Engineering
CGPA: 4.23/5.00 (3.57/4.00 after WES conversion)
GRE : 305 (154Q, 152V, AW 3.5)
TOEFL: About to write
Years of Work Experience: 3+

Don't know how to proceed now.....Please make una help me.... embarassed
Can you convince yourself why switching will be a plus for your career? Do you want MechE or 'other STEM courses'? You did your UG, so you should be able to know what field you want to advance in. One good thing about STEM though is that you should be more concerned about research interests, more than the department. There's a great deal of overlap between different Engr departments these days.

E.g. You can work on Energy research in Chem, Mech, Met & Mat, Biological, Agricultural or even Elect.

As for the schools, you'll need to get a ranking list of grad programs in MechE, check the ones that fit your profile and dig up more.

All the best!

Hi guys, my visa was delayed on Monday by 7am window 9, the hall was crowded and vos kinda strict that day.

I had an admission at Central Michigan University, but like I posted earlier in this forum, the major in my i20 was liberal arts and sciences, I sent an email to the admission school asking why that was given when I was expected to have Information technology, they relief that, that's the norm that the main major shall be given up on arrival at the school, I had no choice but to start studying on what liberal arts and sciences is all about.
Now back to the interview. Which last for less than 2mins
In the cubicle were 2vos, I guess a junior was standing while the senior was sitted and he interviewed me.
Vo: what's your study plan
Me; im going to cmu to pursue a bachelors in liberal arts and sciences which will last approximately 36months
Vo:What was your previous degree in,
Me: computer science from the university of ibadan.
Vo: what benefit will this course be to you
Me: it will boost my managerial skills and make me more effective in my communication skills and my mode of reasoning ethically.

Next he typed for like a minute and gave me the 214b booklet and my passport.

Now, I've contacted the school and explained everything to them, they apologised and even said they are making my case an exception and giving sending me another I20 that will have the major in information technology, , the officer suggested that I should defer the admission till fall intake as time may not be OK to book for another appointment. School resumes 9tj January for spring.

Pls guys walspring, textrem, others kindly advice if i should defer toll fall or go ahead and book another appointment and also will going for another bsc be a problem?
Vo: what benefit will this course be to you
Me: it will boost my managerial skills and make me more effective in my communication skills and my mode of reasoning ethically.

Your reply to that question was too vague and general. You needed to be specific and clear about how you plan to use the course to further your career back here in Nigeria.
Let the school send another I-20. Before it gets here, once it's ready, they can give you the details you'll need to book an appointment while you pay the fees in time for a December interview, most likely.

All the best!

What kind of staffing agency? If its the American ones like Act-1, Apple-One and co, you're fine. They are reputable and do have good and legitimate jobs posted. But if its those Indian ones, be careful. Many of them are shady and they strive to make you sign a contract that basically makes you indebted to them without actually giving you a job to do... Or simply giving you a bogus "project" like their fellow Indians call it. There may be some of them that are good, but I usually don't bother with them

You best bet will be to start applying on your own...indeed.com has tons of jobs posted everyday and if you're dedicated with your applications you'll definitely get called for interviews and eventually get a job. All the best.
