if you have access to a desktop monitor use a VGA cable to connect to it and reboot to see if it will boot up windows to be sure your lappy screen isn't the culprit.

Who knows how much it costs to upgrade RAM from 8gb to 16gb on a 2012 MacBook.

Check and make sure your system supports such upgrade cos a 2012 Macbook is quite old and if it does,what's the module i.e ddr 2 or 3?
