Politics / Social Media Seems To Have Suspended Our Intellect? by Haykay80(m): 2:14pm On Jan 23, 2018
I have been besieged lately by a barrage of forwards and posts on social media that leave me wondering whether the folks that send or post these messages have any intellectual filters (which I think this age requires) or perhaps there is a contest for being the first to forward or as CNN would say, “be the first to know”. Sadly, people now seem to believe that social media is a veritable source of authentic information. One is tempted to give credit to Donald Trump who has successfully labeled main stream media as FAKE NEWS; with the corollary that social media makes genuine news. What a paradox!

I will cite some shocking examples in the last one week that accentuates this worrisome anomaly:

A friend sends me this forward that states that the entire ‘security architecture’ of Nigeria is headed by Fulanis. From the President who is the commander-in-Chief though the IG of police to the National security adviser. The forward concludes by wondering how then the marauding Fulani herdsmen can be stopped. I sought to cross check the facts only to discover that the first person listed after the president who of course is a Fulani is the IG of Police. It turns out that the IGP, Ibrahim Idris Kpotum is of Nupe extraction from Niger State. I didn’t bother to check the others. I picked up my phone to call my friend and confronted him with my findings. He began to stutter as he said: “it was forwarded to me too”.

Again, I receive this video where the esteemed Bishop Oyedepo was addressing a congregation and quoting a purported release by the Fulani Nationality Movement (FNM). What shocked me the most was not the content of the paper but rather the supposed source of information which the revered clergyman says in his words: “ it’s on the net (internet)”. He repeated: “it’s on the net”. Now, here is my problem. Dr. Oyedepo is a PhD holder and pro-chancellor of two leading private universities in Nigeria. I would be shocked out of my existence if he is ignorant of the fact that the internet can not be cited in evidence in intellectual or academic discourses. High school students know that not even Wikipedia can be quoted in their research. I have also found in the same source that the Bishop cited, all manners of phoney news report about him - that he was banned from London, he is a fake prophet, he got his power from the under-world etc. All on the net. Do I believe it because it is on the net? Really amazing! I googled the so called FNM only to discover it is a non-existent organization whose only appearance is on this document. Anyone can post anything on the internet. It is not God who uploads content on the net, it is anybody and anybody at that. What a day it would be when Fulani herdsmen are technologically savvy enough to communicate via the internet.

There is yet another that was forwarded to me that says: EVER WONDER WHY CERTAIN MEDICATIONS DON’T WORK AFTER SEVERAL DAYS OF USE? It goes on to state all kinds of fallacious drug interactions that leave me wondering at how scientifically inventive we can be. Vitamin C and Antimalarial drugs, Painkillers and soft drinks, the list goes on and on. Have we become so intellectually destitute that we cannot reason or search things out before tacitly endorsing them as we share?

Perhaps, the most ridiculous one is the clearly photoshopped image of President Buhari gazing at a herd of cattle on an iPad at a public function. I am not aware of any head of state who goes around with a gadget. Not even the twitter happy President of the United States is seen in public with his twitting device. Secondly, I know that for security reasons, it is very uncommon for anyone other than security details to sit behind the president let alone have access to the content of his document.

I still wonder when Nigerians will use the brains that God has given them rationally. Today, social media has exacerbated the malaise of an already intellectually leth

Politics / Edo Guber: PDP Kicks, Reject Results Announced By INEC by Haykay80(m): 1:30pm On Sep 29, 2016
Sep 29, 2016 1:24 pm | Leave a comment

It was a tales of woes for the Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and it candidate as the party yesterday rejected out rightly the results of the Edo Governorship election that was conducted on Wednesday.

The party rejected the results in a press conference addressed by the state party chairman, Mr Dan Orbih, which also had in attendance, the governorship candidate, Mr Osagie Ize-Iyamu, in Benin; even as INEC was still announcing the results showed live on television

The party and it’s candidate said they were rejecting the results because it was fabricated and a pre-determined results by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and Edo government.

Orbih who spoke first, noted that the results of the election as been announced by the INEC, was at complete variance from what they got from their agents and independent observers.

Orbih alleged that the two weeks extension of the poll by the electoral body, was to allow for more time to perfect the manipulation of the governorship election.

According to Orbih, “You will recall that our state Publicity Secretary had briefed the press less than 48 hours to the elections what is playing out now. If you go by the results that were announced at the polling units and wards across the state, it shows that PDP would have won by over 30,000 votes.

“What the INEC is announcing is clearly different from what we got from our agents and independent observers in the 192 wards and over 2,000 units across the state. We are rejecting these results as been announced by the INEC and we are coming out early enough to make this known.”

Orbih said the cancellation of some results on the basis of failed card readers, was part of deliberate plan to also manipulate the poll.

The state chairman said the areas were results were canceled, we’re strong hold of the PDP.

“I wonder what incident form is for. Voters should not be made to suffer unduly for the inefficient of card readers, he stated.

He said the results been announced by the INEC, was clearly at variance with the wide acclaimed turn out of voters, that was also acknowledged by the electoral umpire.

On his part, the governorship candidate Pastor Osagie Ize Iyamu said he aligned himself with the position of the party and alleged that results were fabricated to suit the APC.

“The results are not a true reflection of what happened in the field. The INEC only played a script written by the government of Edo state. The delay in announcing the results by INEC was purely pre-determine to do what they are doing now which is to announce fabricated results that are completely in invariance with what happened in the units.

“ To show that the results were pre-determined and written if you look at the figures announced by INEC now you will find out that it does not reflex the huge turnout which they INEC attested to and by the time they finish it will appears as if this is the lowest turnout ever in Edo gubernatorial elections.

Politics / Court Rejects Kashamu’s Request To Stop Arrest, Extradition by Haykay80(m): 2:55pm On Aug 31, 2016
A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused an application by Senator Buruji Kashamu to stop the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Police from going ahead with his arrest and extradition to the United States.

Kashamu is the Senator representing Ogun East in the National Assembly.

Justice Okon Abang in his ruling on Wednesday held that the application was incompetent.

He added that the security agencies deserved to be served notice to show cause before the order was granted.

Kashamu’s counsel, Godswill Mrakpor, had asked the court to grant urgent hearing to the application, insisting that there were moves to arrest and transport Kashamu to the US to face drug-related charges.

Politics / Benjamin Adekunle’s Interview Sparks Hot Debates by Haykay80(m): 9:38am On Aug 26, 2016
The journalist Randolf Baumann interviewed Benjamin Adekunle, (head of the Third Marine Commando on Federal Side) in Igweocha during the Nigeria-Biafra War for Stern Magazine, and the interview was published on August 18, 1968. When Uzor Maxim Uzoatu put it on social media, it sparked hot debates. The interview is published below:

“I have to kill the Ibos—sorry”
Stern reporter Randolph Baumann spoke with the General of the Nigerian front troops.

If you want to get to know the devil of Africa, just ask for Adekunle. He is the man who is responsible for the death of 100,000 Ibo people”. The man who provided this tip to Randolph Baumann, the Stern reporter, was Mister Ikpa, the official representative of the Republic of Biafra in Lisbon. Mister Ikpa knew even more: “Adekunle does not like journalists. He had a man from England who disagreed with him shaved bald, do an hour of push-ups, and write one-thousand times: I am a crappy Englishman and don’t have a say in Nigeria”.

Having been thus forewarned, the Stern reporter flew to Port Harcourt, a big Biafra harbor city in the midst of a swamp and in the oil field of the Niger-delta, and requested an interview from the “devil” Benjamin Adekunle.

Major Adekunle, 28-years old, General of the Nigerian troops on the South front sat enthroned behind the General’s desk of the Shell administration, which he had made into his main station when he took the Ibo-city by storm on May 18. Now he stated: “I am convinced you will report objectively and keep to our orders.” We confirmed that.

“Okay,” he beamed, “the Germans just know how war works. Tonight there is a front-party in my headquarters. You will come! An order is an order!”

This interview with the most important man in the Nigerian war took place at night. Whisky and beer were abundant, uniformed go-go girls played DJ, Adekunle danced and petted his mascot, a small mountain goat named “Ojukwu”.

STERN: Your friends in the federal government of Lagos call you the “bloodhound of Nigeria”. You are chasing a whole people. You kill everything.

ADEKUNLE: Europeans are awful. They always generalize. My troops have kept prisoners. You have had a chance to convince yourself of this.

STERN: I only saw one prisoner, a fifteen-year old boy.

ADEKUNLE: There you are! In addition I want to emphasize that we do not murder all people who no longer want to remain members of the Nigeria Federation.

STERN: Does that mean that you do not want the extinction of the Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: The nation which the Ibos founded under the name of Biafra on May 30, 1967 is not a pure Ibo-federation. You Europeans should really know that by now. Seven million Ibos and five million other population groups are living now in the 80% overpopulated Biafra: Ibibios, Ijaws, Kalabaris, Ekios, Efiks, and Annangs. These minority populations in the Ibo nation have always hated the Ibos. Therefore they jubilantly welcome the liberation of their areas through federal troops.

STERN: What are your troops doing when they march into a town around Port Harcourt, an area where most of the farmers are not Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: We aim at everything that moves.

STERN: Small children tend not to stay put for very long.

ADEKUNLE: I know. I have two myself.

STERN: What will your troops do when you get to the Ibo heartland, that is, to the place populated by Ibos only?

ADEKUNLE: There we will aim at everything even if it is not moving.

STERN: Are you racist?

ADEKUNLE: You should know exactly where racists are. There is no such thing as racism in Nigeria.

STERN: But why are you refusing to discuss this war with a European?

ADEKUNLE: Let me tell you something: When the Russians surrounded Stalingrad did you request a land corridor from them so as to better feed your soldiers who were stuck in the pot there? Of course you didn’t and I can tell from your face that you think the thought of a land corridor to bring in food for the captured German soldiers in Stalingrad is a bad joke. Me too. Where and when, …………., was there a war in which the loser was re-nourished one more time before the final loss? Why are you just calling for a land corridor for Biafra? Why aren’t you calling for a land corridor for the Viet Kong? I have to declare: You Europeans are simply not competent!

STERN: What is happening to the European Humanitarian Assistance programs which were authorized through your government?

ADEKUNLE: In the section of the front that I rule—and that is the whole south front from Lagos to the border of Cameroon—I do not want to see the Red Cross, Caritas Aid, World Church delegation, Pope, Missionary, or UN delegation.

STERN: Does that mean that the many thousands of tons of food that are stored in Lagos will never get to the refugee camps in your section of the country?

ADEKUNLE: You are a sharp one, my friend. That’s exactly what I am saying.

STERN: But you said yourself that most of the refugees in the part you captured are not Ibos.

ADEKUNLE: But there could be Ibos among them. I want to avoid feeding a single Ibo as long as this whole people have not given up yet.

STERN: Do you sometimes feel sympathy for the Ibos?

ADEKUNLE: I have learned a word from the British, which is “sorry”! That’s how I want to respond to your question. I did not want this war but I want to win this war. Therefore I have to kill the Ibos. Sorry!
The End.

Some of the angry reactions:

Francis Banji: No wonder they call him the Black Scorpion!

Nkanu Egbe When we read stories about the holocaust we don’t demonise them, do we. The story of the civil war needs to be told to all and of all. Perhaps, when the truth is all out, we can begin to truly reconcile.

Abdul Oroh: Both Adekunle and Ojukwu are in heaven. I interacted with both Ojukwu and Adekunle when they were alive. I interviewed Adekunle with Nduka Irabor, my Editor at The African Guardian. Adekunle’s reply to allegations of brutality and being a psychopath was: “how old was I? A 24 year old Brigadier with a division to command and a war to win.” He confessed he personally executed a cousin for cowardice. They went to war straight from the finest and reputable British military institutions. The various commanders knew themselves very well. They were also competing against each other.
My reading of that was, they were ready to sacrifice anything. They wanted to prove they were better than their rivals. I believe they were also victims of the system that threw them up.
Let’s work to make Nigeria worth the sacrifice of all the victims. In the words of John pepper Clark ” we are all casualties.” No more war in Nigeria.

Brian Jatto: Is there any beautiful war? Wars are better not the first or any option at all! The atrocties committed on both sides are better conjectured than seen or experienced. During the civil war, 1967/1970, I was 12/13/14/15 years old and can recollect graphically, what I saw and experienced at fringes of the unfortunate war in Benin City.

Chidi Ezeoke: “All acts of indignity against human persons, against human society debase the perpetrators more than the victims”. (The Vatican council)

Frank Halim: When are we going to get past the civil war of 46 years ago and get down to the serious business of being united as one – as Africans. The Black Diaspora is waiting.

Sam Amadi: Frank you get past something you have fully comprehended

Allison Oguejiofor: Pls Maxim, wherever you can find this kind of story, bring them up and publish them much more extensively. This is not rabble-rousing. No. It is a necessity if only for its and liberating and corrective effects. Kudos mehn!

Ebere Uzoatu: The mad man Adekunle and his bad verses. One was very gratified that he died in abject penury and a highly frustrated Country Bumpkin pipsqueak. The records have it that Adekunle died as one of the psychotic homo sapiens of this century. Let him rot in the hottest part of hell for what one may care.

Paul Austin Ogechukwu Aginam: If this man Adekunle did all these, then Awolowo is no different with his hunger approach to war over innocent kids and women.

Ayo Olesin: Those who think the civil war has ended better wake up. It has continued albeit undeclared in many parts of the country in the gguis Boko Haram, MEND, Fulani cattlemen vrs farmers on one side and a more sinister version between the theiving elite and the rest of us. It will only end when we go back to where we started from…agreeing to stay together peacefully on terms or just going our separate ways. I am one of those who belive that our present claim to.to nationhood is deceptive and has not brought about the prosperity we all.desire for the simple reason that we do not have a.common national aspiration to propel us forward. What we have bemovengaged in essentially is a macabre dance of all motion no movement…as we compete to control the centre.

Ayo Olesin … for those who blame Adekunle for his vile words. Well war is a killing party.. rules can be bent at will… he was acting under orders and it is not the job of soldiers to sympathise with the enemy… which is why we must work to avoid a repeat of that sordid episode and end the ongoing mini wars

Ed Keazor: He was acting contrary to orders and did so consistently. When the patience of his Commanders was exhausted, he was relieved of his command. His successor did not follow in his footsteps thankfully.

Toni Icheku: Ayo Olesin No part was asking for any sympathy, there are rules and conventions governing wars which is why you find the Red Cross in war situations. Adekunle was simply evil, just like Awolowo.

Oritsejolomi J Isebor I interviewed Odumegwu Ojukwu in 1986 as a THISWEEK reporter in his Apapa residence. The interview was canned by a ‘Biafran’ editorial supervisor. I guess the editor’s indiscretions are final! The agonies of a civil war is deeper than what meets the eye. And the stories will be told from all angles of comprehension. It is like watching an entertaining masquerade; you enjoy the gyrations from vantaged positions.

Emeka Uzoatu: This was the same man that knelt down in the office of an Igbo officer years later to plead for the retrievance of his pension papers.

Kanayo Esinulo: Rebellion started on May 29, 1966 and properly rounded up on July 29, 1966. In his morbid nationwide broadcast on August 1, Yakubu Gowon was to announce the secession if his North from Nigeria but was hurriedly, and if you ask me regrettably, stopped by Sir Francis Cumming-Bruce. That was the only condition that Gowon said would appease his men. When this was communicated to Enugu, Emeka encouraged the Brigadier, a Yoruba, to please allow them to go. Two, I have a copy of the book, Tragedy of History, and would want to be referred to the page or chapter where the author described his origin beyond his attachment to Ibadan and Ilorin. I bought the original, not pirated, copy from Editor Steve Osuji. Please, on which page or chapter? I wait.

Abdul Oroh: Nze Kanayo Esinulo. You are right to say Brigadier Alabi Isama was raised in the Ibadan -Ilorin axis. However, he mentioned his attachment to Utagba-Uno in today’s Delta state. He was, because of his ancestry ,compelled to return to the 4th Bde of the Nigerian Army as a Mid-West of Nigeria officer during the early days of the crisis. When Midwest was captured by Biafra Army, he fled Asaba to Utagba-Uno where he hid amongst his people. He was received by his step mother. Later when Biafra intelligence got to know he was there, he was aided by his people to escape to Benin through Warri. That is the much your reporter can file today .Until you rescue me by publishing your eye witness account I have no choice but to rely on the ‘heroic’ feats of the generals. I have both the pirated and original copies purchased at the same shop at the airport in Lagos. I guess they are both in Abuja.

Babatunde Ogunsanya: What happened during the Civil War in Nigeria will not be allowed in 21st Century leaders of the country will be dragged to Hague,

We pray wedon’t see war again in Nigeria, that is why President Buhari the Changer in chief should change his attitude and stop the killing of Fulani cow farmers because if he doesn’t people will react and what is that?

Babatunde Ogunsanya War . AK 47 that Fulani cow farmers are carrying up and down our country is not part of equipment approved for grazing of animals or animal husbandry.

Its just surprising when a non-descript group invade our consciousness with shouts of an impending onslaught on criminals parading themselves as freedom fighters.
One would've expected that energies will be channeled into unraveling how funds meant for the betterment of the ND was mismanaged by privileged persons from that region.
Asari Dokubo fought for emancipation of ND, it yielded a high institution located in Benin Republic of all places. Where I Ankio Briggs, Ben Murray Bruce. Worst of all Goodluck Jonathan was at d helms of affair for 5+ years without visible devt to show for it.
Recking needless havoc on oil infrastructures had effect on the economy even in the light of falling global oil prices.
All of these unveiled right before our eyes, not even a single ND leader came forward to condemn. Now the rooster is stylishly coming closer home, and some nonentities are crying foul! Until we begin to hold people accountable for their actions, we will make Jo meaningful proress.
Nigeria armed forces should proceed to ensure an effective hard reset; heavens will not fall.

Celebrities / Basketmouth: Jonathan Put Us In The Septic Tank We Find Ourselves by Haykay80(m): 3:03pm On Aug 09, 2016
Bright Okpocha, Nigerian comedian known to fans as Basketmouth, has blamed Goodluck Jonathan, former president, for the economic problems bedeviling the country.

In a recent post on his Instagram page, Basketmouth also made it clear that he did not campaign for Muhammadu Buhari, the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, during the last general election.

Basketmouth further noted despite not performing his civic duty, he was ready to vote for any other candidate but Jonathan in the presidential election.

“While many of my colleagues, friends and family members campaigned for the PDP, APC and various candidates during the last elections (and I cannot emphasize enough that it is their right to do so), I never campaigned for Buhari or any other politician.

“Indeed, I personally hoped that he would win the election and perhaps that was evident in my body language and I am happy he won. But I did not campaign for him.

“Nigeria was in a bad place by the end of the last administration and it was only a matter of time before we would have suffered the plights of Brazil and Venezuela.

“Truth of the matter is that I would have voted anyone that could speak 2 words of English against GEJ and that’s strictly based on the amount of greed and selfishness we witnessed from members of his administration in the 6 years that he sat on the rock.

“They put us in this septic tank we are in right now…. well, that and the oil price downfall among other things.”

The comic also expressed hope in the ability of the Buhari-led administration to turn around the state of Nigeria’s economy.

“I have seen how government can influence and affect the lives of the downtrodden positively. I am still patient, praying and hoping that PMB can turn Nigeria’s economy around and help strengthen Nigeria’s social justice system.

“Should he and his party fail, we are all free to cast our votes for the next man come 2019 and I shall be exercising that right.”

Jibrin has a passion for teaching and has lectured at several universities mostly pro bono, including the Nasarawa State University where he taught International Relations. He has written several books and papers including the celebrated book on Obasanjo’s foreign policy.

He is a fellow of several professional bodies and has won several awards both home and abroad.

Politics / SERAP Drags House Of Reps To UN Over Budget Padding by Haykay80(m): 2:49pm On Jul 27, 2016
Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has sent an urgent appeal to Professor Philip Alston, UN Special Rapporteur on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights urging him to use his good offices and position to urgently request the leadership of the House of Representatives of Nigeria to explain the alleged deliberate padding of the 2016 budget with N481 billion.

SERAP said the removal of critical projects and replacement of such projects with constituency projects, which have not only undermined the fight against corruption in the country but also exacerbated extreme poverty and violations of internationally recognized human rights should also be probed.

The petition dated 27 July 2016 and signed by SERAP executive director Adetokunbo Mumuni states that, “SERAP considers the alleged budget padding, diversion of public funds and abuse of office by the leadership of the House of Representatives as amounting to a deliberate retrogressive action, which cannot be justified by reference to the totality of internationally recognized human rights, and in the context of the obligation to fully use the maximum available resources to fulfil and ensure the enjoyment of those rights.”

The petition copied to Mr Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights; the Conference of States Parties to the UN Convention against Corruption and the Inter-Parliamentary Union, also states that, “We are concerned that the alleged corrupt budget process in the House of Representatives in the context of an economy already weakened by years of large scale corruption will jeopardise sustainable development and hurt ordinary Nigerians who rely on the government to provide basic necessities of life such as water, good roads and electricity.”

The petition reads in part: “SERAP is seriously concerned about the lack of transparency and accountability of the National Assembly, which is not consistent with the behaviour of an institution that is constitutionally mandated to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of Nigeria. This lack of accountability partly explains why ordinary Nigerians do not trust the National Assembly, and its ability to make laws for the peace, order and good governance of Nigeria, and to curb corruption within its systems.”

“SERAP is concerned that the longstanding practice of constituency projects by the National Assembly of Nigeria and the corresponding alleged diversion of public funds have continued to systematically drain the country’s “maximum available resources”, precipitating poverty, and economic crisis which inevitably magnify dispossession, hunger, disease, illiteracy, and insecurity.”

“Alleged budget padding and abuse of office by the leadership of the House of Representatives in particular and the National Assembly in general also have uneven consequences against the vulnerable groups of the society, including the poor, women and children, perpetrating and institutionalizing discrimination. By allegedly exploiting public funds for the personal gain of leaders rather than socio-economic development of the country, constituency projects jeopardize the needs and well-being of future generations as well.”

“SERAP notes that the Nigerian constitution 1999 (as amended) grants legislative power to the National Assembly to “make laws for the peace, order and good government”. SERAP believes that this power implies that the National Assembly including the House of Representatives will serve as a crucial bastion of transparency, accountability, and the rule of law that are necessary to reduce poverty, establish a corruption-free society, and effective enjoyment of human rights.”

“SERAP is seriously concerned that in the process of alleged budget padding the leadership of the House of Representatives removed key projects such as on roads, electricity and/or drastically reduced their costs. These projects ordinarily would have contributed to reducing the effects and consequences of poverty in the country while also enhancing respect for human rights.”

“We believe that the allegations that the leadership of the House of Representatives worked to abuse the budget process to benefit themselves at the expense of the majority of Nigerians is a fundamental breach of constitutional oath and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights to which Nigeria is a state party, which requires states to use their maximum available resources to promote and secure the enjoyment of basic economic and social rights such as the rights to food, to healthcare, to access to quality education and adequate standards of living.”

“Article 2(1) of the Covenant provides that each State party to the present Covenant undertakes to take steps to the maximum of its available resources, with a view to achieving progressively the full realization of the rights recognized in the present Covenant by all appropriate means, including particularly the adoption of legislative measures.”

“This implies that government at all levels including the National Assembly has a duty to ensure that public funds are used to benefit Nigerians and not for personal use. Human rights cannot be achieved without significant expenditure in critical areas of governance.”

SERAP therefore urged the Special Rapporteur to:

1. Publicly express concerns about the allegations of budget padding and diversion of public funds and abuse of office by the leadership of the House of Representatives, thereby exacerbating extreme poverty and violations of human rights;
2. Put pressure on the leadership of the House of Representatives to allow for independent and transparent investigation of the allegations of budget padding, diversion of public funds and abuse of office, and not to victimize Mr Jubrin for blowing the whistle on the allegations of corruption in the House;
3. Make sure that alleged corruption in the House of Representatives is not allowed to undermine the mandate of the Special Rapporteur to advance human rights and address extreme poverty;
4. Urge the National Assembly, in particular the House of Representatives to promote in its legislative duties transparency and accountability and observe human rights principles, and that the exercise of its legislative power complies with Nigeria’s international human rights obligations and commitments

The petition reads further: “This request is based on allegations by the immediate past Chairman of the House Committee on Appropriations, Abdulmunin Jibrin, and available documents that Speaker Yakubu Dogara and three other principal officers of the House of the Representatives padded the 2016 budget to the tune of N481 billion and included N100 billion on constituency projects, contrary to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution.”

“Mr Jubrin also accused Mr Dogara and Deputy Speaker, Yussuff Lasun, Chief Whip, Hassan Ado Doguwa and the Minority Leader, Leo Ogor of perpetrating financial fraud; that Mr Dogara is running the finances of the House like his personal estate; that Mr Dogara and the other principal officers diverted millions of naira in the name of paying for guest houses and official residence; that Mr Dogara abuses his office by soliciting for inappropriate favours from agencies and multinational companies; and that Mr Dogara forced an agency to grant loans and a construction company was blackmailed to do some work at his Asokoro plot. Other allegations by Mr Jubrin and supported by documents now circulating on the internet are that Dogara has consistently refused members access to the financial dealings and internal budget of the House; that Mr Dogara runs the financial management of the House like a cult.”

Politics / Aisha Buhari In Jefferson Bribery Scandal Not President Buhari’s Wife — Ex-efcc by Haykay80(m): 10:56am On Jun 21, 2016
Aisha Buhari in Jefferson bribery scandal not President Buhari’s wife — Ex-EFCC boss, Lamorde

The Aisha Buhari named in the bribery scandal involving a U.S. Congressman, Williams Jefferson, is not the Aisha that is President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, a former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Lamorde, has told PREMIUM TIMES.

“I can tell you authoritatively that the Aisha Buhari named in that case is not President Buhari’s wife,” Mr. Lamorde said when contacted Tuesday morning. “It is another Aisha Buhari entirely.

“I was the director of operations at the EFCC at the time so I know about the case very well. I can tell you that it is not her (President Buhari’s wife). That much we established.”

Mr. Lamorde, who was EFCC chairman until he was removed in December 2015 by President Buhari, is currently on course at the Nigerian Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies.

PREMIUM TIMES contacted him for clarification following the claim by Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, on Monday, that the Aisha Buhari mentioned in court documents to have transferred $170,000 to the convicted American politician is President Buhari’s wife.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Mr. Fayose had accused President Buhari of being corrupt.

“Even the President cannot claim to be an angel,” the governor said, in reaction to the freezing of his Zenith Bank account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jefferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialize the judgment for people to see and read.”

The governor’s Special Assistant on New Media, Lere Olayinka, later circulated copies of the court document which named one Aisha Buhari as being involved in the Jefferson scandal.

The documents showed that in some of the exhibits tendered in convicting Mr. Jefferson of bribery, the Aisha Buhari was mentioned as transferring $170,000 to the American politician using a firm as proxy.

“Government Exhibits 36-87 (6/26/02 $170,000 wire transfer from account in Nigeria in the name of Aisha Buhari to an account in the name of The ANJ Group, LLC, identifying “William Jefferson” as Beneficiary),” the U.S. Government Sentencing Memorandum said on page 22.

The U.S. had at the time requested Nigeria to help it investigate the Nigerians named in the scandal, and Mr. Lamorde, as director of operation at the EFCC at the time, coordinated that investigation.

“It is unfair to link the President’s wife with that case,” he said. “She was definitely not the one involved, and Fayose and other Nigerians should know this.

Politics / Bukola Saraki - How To Fall From The Top by Haykay80(m): 1:12pm On Apr 28, 2016
Ever since he left office in 2011, Bukola Saraki has been dogged by EFCC investigation into his personal wealth and the records of his administration. Now he has been docked at the Code of Conduct Tribunal on charges of false and under declaration of assets. Nigerians are just beginning to see why Bukola Saraki has been in and out of all the courts in the land trying to stop his trial. All of them dismissed his suits and insisted that the trial must go on.

Saraki claims blue murder, he says he is being witch hunted as a result of his stout opposition to the Muslim/Muslim ticket that the All Progressives Congress (APC) had initially toyed with. Another time he says he is being persecuted for winning the Senate Presidency against the wishes of some people in his party.

Analysts also recall his bitter struggle with his father over who should become governor of Kwara State in 2011. His father's wish was that Gbemisola Rukayya Saraki should succeed him as governor but Bukola would have none of it. The junior Saraki's disdainful rejection of sister Gbemi as his successor and his insistence on AbdulFatah Ahmed sickened and humiliated his father.

In the last two weeks, the Nigerian Senate has offended the sensibilities of the citizens of this country. Their desperate and unbridled attempt to change the Code of Conduct Bureau/Code of Conduct Tribunal law so as to scuttle Saraki's trial; their ill-advised summons of CCT chairman, Danladi Umar, to appear before them; their purchase of Toyota Land Cruiser SUVs at twice the normal price as well as their refusal to reveal their budget as promised, are all pointers that they are working for themselves not their constituencies. Their following of Saraki to the tribunal to face his trial, far from being seen as an act of solidarity with their President, is viewed by Nigerians as an endorsement of corruption.

Some people think the APC should intervene; others say after he spurned the party, Saraki should not expect its sympathy. Having realised that he is on his own, Saraki is desperately fighting back. Yet in all his protestations, he has never addressed the contradictions said to be contained in his assets declaration form. In the event, CCT chairman, Danladi Umar's accelerated trial hastens the determination of Saraki's fate.

The trial has become a test case of Buhari's resolve to fight corruption and people are waiting to see whether the President can also take on his party men and women in that regard. Every trick Saraki has tried to block his trial has failed and there is every possibility that he is going to be found guilty. If that happens, CCT Tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, is expected to impose maximum punishment on Saraki and this means he vacates Senate Presidency, a 10-year ban on holding of public office and seizure of assets, among others.

The report by Sunday Trust of 24th April, 2016, that five Senators, all of them ex-governors - Rabi'u Musa Kwankwaso; Ahmed Sani Yerima; Aliyu Magatakardan Wamakko; Abdullahi Adamu and Danjuma Goje - are trying to broker "peace" between Saraki and his adversaries may well be true. However, the irreducible minimum acceptable is Saraki's withdrawal from the seat of Senate President. If he does this, it is possible to get the Attorney General to withdraw the charges so Saraki could be released to go home and watch things from the side lines. Still, if he goes through the case and is found guilty, it is possible President Buhari exercises his prerogative of mercy and mitigates Saraki's punishment.

Notwithstanding his claim that he is being persecuted, many Nigerians believe that if the records of his declaration of assets with the CCB are what the prosecution describe them to be, then Saraki has himself to blame. So far, Saraki's conduct as revealed by the prosecution witness has embarrassed the Senate, his party and all those who expect our public officials to live above board. The Senate is stymied in the false belief that they can do something on the floor to extricate Saraki. They have abandoned legislative duties and are pretending that Saraki's fall is tantamount to the humiliation of the entire chamber.

This is not the best of time for Saraki or the Senators. Even the outspoken APC Senator Shehu Sani is not commenting on the Saraki saga. It is left to the likes of Senator Nwaobashi of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to continue to threaten that if Saraki is removed, their party will seize the opportunity to install a member of their party as Senate President, but it doesn't really matter, does it? Still, if PDP installs someone whose hand is not clean, he will face the same troubles as Saraki. The crux of the matter is that President Buhari is willing to work with any patriot, irrespective of political party, to improve the wellbeing of Nigerians.

Instead of the Senate to reach out to President Buhari to resolve the aspects of the budget he objects to, the Senators are digging in the more. Right now, the budget matter is what is bothering Nigerians, not the fate of Saraki. Saraki is the architect of his misfortune and the recent revelation from the Panama Papers appear to establish a pattern. Evan (s) Enwerem, Chuba Okadigbo and Adolphus Wabara were all there before they dismounted. Saraki is bound to fall from the top because from all indications, he doesn't have the moral rectitude to lead a change Senate expected to work for the people
