By Gbenga Adedayo The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) has embarked on a house-cleaning exercise aimed at repositioning the Institute and eliminating financially handicapped members from its rank. The affected members totaling 25,557 (twenty-five thousand, five hundred and fifty-seven) members are said to have defaulted in their financial obligation to the Institute. Of these numbers, a total of 11,240 (eleven thousand, two hundred and forty) were being placed on suspension for owing the Institute between six months to three years, while the other 14, 337 (fourteen thousand, three hundred and thirty-seven) members were being delisted for owing up to six months and beyond. However, the affected members have been given a grace of two weeks by the Council of the Institute to pay up all outstanding dues if they were desirous of escaping the harmer. The payment window will expire on November 19, 2019. In a letter dated November 5, 2019 and signed by the Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of ICAN, John Evbodaghe, members were advised to take advantage of the two weeks grace to reconcile their financial status, failing which, the Institute reserved the right to publish the names of debtors in national newspapers. The letter which was addressed to each of the affected members, read in part: “Following our letter of October 3, 2019 on the above stated subject and several publications in national newspapers and ICAN website, the Institute has now concluded the following: Suspended eleven thousand, two hundred and forty (11,240) non-financial members who are owing for six (6) months and three (3) years, and Delisted fourteen thousand, three hundred and thirty-seven (14,337) non-financial members who are owing for more than three (3) years effective from November 1, 2019.” “You are enjoined to check your financial status or those known to you on the ICAN Website – www.icanig.org (Financial Members Search) and take necessary actions to regularize your membership if you are not on the Financial Members’ List.” The letter stated further, “Please note that there are conditions to be met before those delisted or suspended could be re-admitted to full membership and no responses on enquiries from the public will be given on behalf of any indebted member.” When Media Issues sort to enquire from the Registrar/CEO, John Evbodaghe through telephone on the conditions to be met by the affected members before re-admission, there was no response. The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is a professional accountancy body in Nigeria and was established by Act of Parliament No. 15 of 1965. Since then, its membership has grown to over 55,000. http://www.mediaissuesng.com/news/ican-axes-members-delists-and-suspends-25557/ |
By Gbenga Adedayo There are strong indications that the once abandoned Ogidigben Oil and Gas Industrial Park designed for fertilizer, methanol, petrochemicals, and aluminium plants may soon roar back to life. This is coming against the backdrop of assertion by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva that discussion on development of an oil and gas industrial park in the Niger Delta, has been opened with Saudi Arabia. Though, the minister did not indicate where in the Niger Delta the industrial park will be sited, but sources close to the Petroleum Ministry told Media Issues that it is likely to be Ogidigben as there is an existing design on the project which was already completed and the area identified and mapped out before it was stalled. Over two kilometres of 2,700 hectares of land had been earmarked for the Ogidigben Park which had already been cleared by Julius Berger PLC before the major investment project was stopped due to community rivalry. The community rivalry was between the Ijaws and Itsekiris. The name of the park, “Ogidigben” and ownership tussle over the land, were the causes of the ethnic rivalry between the Ijaw and the Itsekiri, forcing the federal government to abandon the over $20 million industrial park. Former Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Dr. Maikanti Baru had first raised hope on the resuscitation of the park when he said during the commissioning of the $60 million Egbaoma Gas Processing Plant in Delta State in February this year that the Ogidigben Gas Plant was imperative in the light of the Federal Government’s gas aspiration of using gas as an enabler for energy independence, industrial development, commerce and environmental and social sustainability. Baru then hinged the revival of the Ogidigben Park on the cooperation of all stakeholders, including investors who were expected to play collaborative role with the Federal Government through the NNPC, which was pursuing aggressive growth in domestic gas supply capacity from the current 1.7 bscfd to 5 bscfd in the medium term. The proposed Industrial Park was located in Ogidigben, a sleepy Delta community that straddles between the Ijaws and Itsekiris, the site of which had ignited old rivalry between the two ethnic groups which had been identified as the factor responsible for stalling the implementation of the industrial park. http://www.mediaissuesng.com/oil-gas-power/industrial-park-to-be-revived/ |
By Michael Owhoko Who will rescue Nigeria from the clutch of ethnic venom that is gradually but steadily being secreted by ethnic nationalists through their actions and behavioral disposition? I have opted to refrain from specific examples in this write up to water down envisaged reactions from those who may feel offended; but I have also left sufficient allusion for easy mental judgment. There is no singular factor today in Nigeria that threatens the corporate existence of Nigeria more than ethnicism. It breeds all forms of vices in the Nigerian space. Distrust, animosity, corruption, nepotism, deception, and prejudices, among others, are offshoot of ethnicism. Ethnicism evokes rivalry, unhealthy competition, acrimony, and even envy among ethnic groups. Indeed, it has become a Frankenstein monster in Nigeria, and if those at the helms of national affairs do not begin a re-orientation process aimed at changing the demeanor of the average Nigerian, the country may sooner than later be destroyed by the raging impact of ethnicism. There are over 250 ethnic groups in Nigeria, and of these, the Hausa/Fulani, Yoruba and Igbo are the three major tribes, which I will call the Big 3. The size and share numbers of these groups account for their dominance and control of politics, bureaucracy and economy in Nigeria, leaving the remaining smaller groups with weak numerical strength to play at the periphery level. Even where these ethnic minorities are positioned to play at the national level, they are at the mercy and whims of these three major tribes, who often times, exert domineering influence, leaving the minorities with little or no window for independent considerations. Therefore, to a larger extent, what the Big 3 do with their style of political, bureaucratic and economic pursuit, have a way of shaping and influencing the values and administrative process of the country. Today, that it is seemingly difficult to conduct free and credible elections and census in Nigeria, is a reflection of the desperation of the three major ethnic groups to dominate the political process and allocation of the country’s resources. Implicitly, the quest for control of political, bureaucratic and economic power by these three major groups, is the origin and primary reason for ethnicism in Nigeria. In other words, ethnicism, as it has come to be known, is the creation of the Big 3 in their efforts to control the country’s political power and resources. Perhaps, the only time the Big 3 work in unison is when their common interest, namely, the oil resource, is threatened. This played out during the National Political Reform Conference (NPRC), instituted by former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration in 2005 where they opposed the demand for increase in the derivation principle from 13 to 25 percent. This was roundly resisted, obviously for selfish reasons not unconnected with fears of likely reduction in oil proceeds to be shared. This also accounts for why there has been consistent opposition to agitation for resource control by the Niger Delta people. The oil wealth will continue to be at the centre of ethnic supremacy contest among the three ethnic groups, which is further worsened by the absence of viable natural mineral resources in their domains. Groundnuts, cocoa and palm oil have diminished in value, unable to attract basic foreign exchange, making oil the only viable source of foreign exchange in Nigeria, thus, their aggressive disposition for control of oil resources. Formation of ethnic associations like Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Ohanaeze and Afenifere is part of their agenda for control of political power and soul of Nigeria. Political leaders in these regions use these ethnic associations to drive their ethnic agenda under the guise of cultural associations. In practical terms these groups have no agenda for promotion of their ethnic cultures. Unwittingly, the seed they planted in their struggle for control of power at the national public space has now sprouted and spread to private and local levels, leading to disequilibrium in allegiance to national and ethnic matters. People now identify with their ethnic groupings first before Nigeria. In other words, there is open allegiance and display of affinity to ethnic grouping than national patriotism. Exacerbated by the low political culture in Nigeria, the country no longer inspires hope due to the fierce ethnic rivalry among the three major ethnic groups. Once a President from an ethnic bloc is in power, members of his ethnic group see it as their turn to dominate the political and economic spaces, as well as determination of the allocation of resources. Government policies and appointments are screwed to further the interest of the President’s tribe. National interest is subordinated for ethnic interest. This is reflected in key national appointments and majority of members of the kitchen cabinet are drawn from the President’s ethnic base, a reflection of the premium of trust he places on his ethnic nationalities. As part of ethnic dominion, these major ethnic groups encourage their indigenes to openly speak their indigenous language in public places like offices, notwithstanding the presence of persons from outside their ethnic domain who do not understand their language. This is done brazenly in government offices, but this has also been extended to the private sector and even the multinational companies where they have significant presence. Speaking of indigenous language in public places is one of the centrifugal forces working against Nigeria, as it shows clearly that we are not one as a country. If you must speak your local dialect, do so in private and when you are with your co-ethnic nationals. But to speak it in the presence of other Nigerians who do not understanding the language, is an indication of arrogance and disdain for mutual respect. This is also gradually being imbibed by some of the minority ethnic groups, portending grave danger. Interestingly, this attitude has also now been extended to places of worship and business frontiers. Some worship centres are perceived to belong to some ethnic groups as well as businesses, including banks, due to ownership/management composition, leadership posture and style of administration. No wonder some time ago in Nigeria, ethnic coloration was added to what was supposed to be a purely business transaction between an individual and a bank, with some members of the individual ethnic group canvassing and encouraging others from same ethnic group to close their accounts with the bank. Everything is now seen from the perspective of ethnicism. Music and newspapers are not spared, as there is apparent discrimination in patronage. Some people have to look at the bottom of a newspaper masthead to know the promoters before patronage. Once the names are dominated by a particular ethnic group, the paper is branded a regional paper, no matter the quality of its content. Even music that is considered a universal language is also suffering from quarantine engendered by ethnicism in Nigeria. No matter how nice the lyrical and rhythmic melodies of an indigenous music, patronage are overwhelmed by ethnic preference. Ironically, we can dance to Swahili and Zulu music in faraway South Africa without the knowledge of the language. Nigeria is hemorrhaging from the prick of ethnicism. The intervention schemes established to promote national integration and unity in the country, namely, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Unity schools (federal government colleges) and representative bureaucracy (federal character policy) have not been able to achieve their objectives due to ethnicism. In one of my books, entitled, Nigeria on the Precipice: Issues, Options and Solutions, I have argued that rather than foster unity, the NYSC has become an albatross, creating awareness of the deep animosity, hushed segregation and incompatible cultural differences existing in the country. Indeed, it is becoming an agent of disunity in the country. As a way out, government should begin by outlawing speaking of ethnic languages in public places and abolishing of ethnic associations in the country. This should also be followed by discontinuing the practice of reflecting state of origin and local government areas in public documents. This way, government would have proved that it is serious about achieving one united nation than the multiple ethnic nations in Nigeria. The seemingly indifference to ethnic nationalism in Nigeria by successive administrations is in fact a roadmap on how Nigeria will be destroyed. Until government initiates a process that will change the perception of the people towards national patriotism as against the current ethnic nationalism, the country’s hope of achieving nationhood will be a mirage. By Gbenga Adedayo Residents of Lekki, Victoria Island and parts of Ikoyi could not go out from their homes on Saturday, October 12, following heavy rainfall which started at about 3.00 am. The torrential rainfall which is yet to recede as at 2.30 pm when this report was being filed, has left many homes flooded and drainages blocked. Areas mostly hit are Lekki, Victoria Island, Ajah, and all the way to Ibeju-Lekki. People were trapped indoors, and were unable to come out for routine business activities. In some homes, water penetrated their houses, destroying household furniture and appliances. When Media Issues visited some of the affected areas, some of the residents were seen removing their belongings from their homes and using buckets to drain water from their sitting rooms. One of the residents Media Issues spoke to at Lekki, Tosin Dudusola, said, “see what the rain has done to us. Government should come to our rescue.” Those without food at home could not go out, and even if they could, traders could not display their wares at the market. If the rain continues for another few hours, it is advised Lagos State Government declares a state of emergency and come to the aid of Lekki residents. http://www.mediaissuesng.com/news/lekki-residents-suffer-rainfall/ |
By Emeka Nze Zenith Bank has embarked on a restructuring process aimed at reducing current size of top management cadre which the management of the bank considers too heavy. In the last six months, not less than seven general managers have lost their jobs as they were asked to resign their appointments with the organization. Some of these managers have put in not less than 25 years of service in the organization. One of the affected general managers was the Chief Compliance Officer, Mrs. Oladoyin Olugbuyi who was less than three months in the saddle, having been redeployed from the Human Resources Department as General Manager. A reliable source within the bank told Media Issues that more top personnel of the bank from the ranks of Assistant General Managers and above may be let off the system before the end of the year in line with management’s strategy to achieve a light top. When Media Issues contacted the Group Head, Corporate Communications of Zenith Bank, Marcel Eguabor on the issue, he denied any plans by the bank to sack any employee, but that those who resigned left on their own which has also enabled the bank to embark on a re-engineering process to reposition the bank for improved performance. Media Issues also gathered that the strategy to scale down the top is to pave way for the promotion of staff in the junior cadre. Some of the employees in the junior category have been stagnated over the years due to lack of vacancies at the top to accommodate promotion, and that with the current exercise, their promotions may be released by end of the year but to take effect from January 2020. Zenith Bank which is reputed for whole sale banking, targeting high net worth individuals, blue chip companies and large corporations, have transformed into retail banking as part of plans for sustained market dominance. Retail banking, also known as consumer banking, is the provision of services by a bank to the general public, rather than to companies, corporations or other banks, which are often described as wholesale banking. With the current retail focus of the bank, individuals, households and small businesses are now target of the bank for deposits and also for disbursement of credit facilities to support their small scale businesses. This has also led to increases activities of the bank in recent times. http://www.mediaissuesng.com/news/zenith-bank-disengages-staff/ |
While making a presentation during the Senate Committee on Gas oversight visit to the NNPC Towers in Abuja, the Group General Manager, Gas Infrastructure Development (GID) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Engr. Farouk Said, indicated that the NNPC is currently working on six priority gas projects that would link gas-to-power and gas-to-industries to boost the national economy and reposition the country for profitability, The Nation reports. Said explained that the current gas infrastructure projects being executed are in tandem with the Gas Master Plan which was approved by the last Federal Executive Council adding that the plan would have a spin off effect on the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of the country. A statement by the Corporation’s Group General Manager, Group Public Affairs Division, Mr. Ohi Alegbe, yesterday, quoted Said as saying: “In line with the mandate of GID, we are currently executing six critical gas infrastructure projects. Four of them are pipeline projects; the others are the Gas Revolution Industrial Park (GRIP) and the Western and Central Processing Plants.” |
Lagos State Government on Saturday assured residents that the state remained safe and secure but urged them to be vigilant while going about their legitimate businesses. This followed the arrest of 45 suspected Boko Haram insurgents in the state. The suspects were arraigned on Friday at the Isolo Magistrate Court in Lagos, after they were picked up one after the other from different locations in the state based on intelligence gathered by the Department of State Security (DSS), which gave the operatives accurate lead to them, THISDAY has learnt. Following this development, Lagos State Government has said as the police and other security agencies intensify their efforts to rid the state of hoodlums, armed robbers and suspected terrorists, the residents should remain calm but very vigilant The government expressed confidence in the combined efforts of DSS, Police and other security agencies to keep the state free of terror attacks and stamp out robberies and violent crimes. The state government, which stated these in a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Mr. Steve Ayorinde, vowed not to relent in its constitutional duty to ensure safety of lives and property throughout the length and breadth of the state. The statement states that the current reality is that times have changed and the need to urge every citizen to be more security conscious is now paramount. “Our appeal goes to every school, housing estates, religious houses, markets and shopping complexes, hotels and restaurants and sporting arenas to take issues of security and personal safety more serious these days and to work with both the government and security agencies in promptly reporting any persons with suspicious activities or unusual gatherings that may compromise security. Care must also be taken in how domestic servants and house aides are also employed.” The statement reiterated Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s directive to rid the state of hoodlums and miscreants operating from uncompleted and abandoned houses, urging owners of such properties to complete or secure them or have the law to contend with. It added that Lagos State government sympathises with victims of robberies and violent crimes, while promising that the government would continue to fund the state security apparatus and do everything within its power to arrest the unwholesome situation. |
by Cheta Nwanze - Oct 21, 2015 We have a particular bad habit back home, which is ignoring things until they get out of hand. @sbmintelligence has put together a report on the violence in North Central Nigeria. The time for unlooking is over. John Anule was killed by people who accused him of cattle rustling. On what planet, and in what century is a human being less important than a cow? This is 21st century Nigeria! Many, in Lagos and Abuja are ‘blissfully’ unaware of what is happening in the Middle Belt. Maybe #BokoHaram fatigue. But we need to wake up and smell the coffee. It affects us. The prices of food in Lagos for example, have gone up by as much as 300% over the last two years. 300%! This has coincided with the escalation of the Middle Belt violence. There are people in the Middle Belt that have not harvested their crops since 2006! Think of the effect if this is a farmer’s only means of sustenance. Now, expand it over a very large area and group of people. The MB violence has different parts but the most important part of the story is that government is unlooking. If you are close to Buhari’s government, please pick up the report and share it. More importantly, get Buhari to ACT. Solutions are in there. Nigeria is fond of burying its head in the sand when violence starts like this, until it boils over. But this Middle Belt crisis can be a much bigger existential threat to Nigeria than any of those. It’s at the heart of the nation. The annual BH average annual death toll is 2,500. North Central Killings death toll in 2015 is already almost 2,000! Buhari needs to ACT NOW. Or are we going to wait until BBC or CNN talks about the Middle Belt killings before something is done? |
SaharaReporters is in possession of a petition written to President Muhammadu Buhari by “Concerned Staff of the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC),” calling for the investigation of EFCC boss Ibrahim Lamorde. The letter, which is dated October 7th, alleges against the two-time chairman crimes of “impunity, screening of offenders, aiding and abetting of criminals, interfering with criminal investigations, and stealing.” Offering a summary of some of the cases allegedly compromised by Mr. Lamorde, the petitioners urged the President to constitute a committee of experts with proven integrity from the law enforcement and intelligence community to take a second look at the cases with a view to finding out if they were compromised or not, and if found to be so, recalling the investigating officers for complicity. It further alleges that under the leadership of Mr. Lamorde, corruption and corrupt acts are not only tolerated at the EFCC, but even celebrated. “One is free to do whatever he wants to as long as he belongs to the clique. There is no reward for hard work and no punishment for wrong-doing.” The letter states under Mr. Lamorde’s control the EFCC has become “a haven for criminals who know their ways around the system,” It accuses the Executive Chairman of conniving with the former Comptroller General Nigeria Customs Service, Mr. Dikko Inde in a grand conspiracy to milk Nigeria dry through a certain joint task force. In addition, it is widely known within the Commission that Mr. Inde was giving Mr. Lamorde money for the running of the EFCC despite a budgetary allocation for that purpose, which he had converted to his personal use. Among others, the petitioners cite the case of one John Ibiteye, who was arrested by the Nigerian Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed Airport Lagos, as he traveled to Abuja with over $2million (US), a case the NDLEA transferred to the EFCC Lagos office. “However, few days after the transfer of the case to EFCC, a written statement by the current acting executive secretary NHIS who claimed to be the rightful owner of the money was forwarded to Lagos office from the Executive Chairman’s office instructing the Head of operations Lagos to release the money to him without further delay despite the fact that he is a civil servant no investigation as carried out to authenticate the source of the money.” According to the petition, several police officers previously sent back to the police by the former chairman were brought back to do the chairman’s dirty jobs. They were placed in strategic positions and are being assigned cases involving large amounts of money or cases involving politically exposed persons which“are considered juicy.” The petitioners identified officers such as CSP Bello Yahaya (Economic Governance Abuja), SP Mohammed Baba Azare (Head Counter Terrorism and General Investigation Abuja), CSP Suleiman Abdu (Head ISOS Abuja), IbrahimYidi (Head Subsidy Investigation; now Extractive Industry Investigation Unit). The most troubling issue is that the corruption in EFCC does not stop with the police officers seconded to the Commission, but it has spread like wildfire among the core staff. The petition declared that the Executive has crippled the agency so much that commission operatives use their personal money to buy [stationery]for official day to day work in their various offices, especially in the Abuja Office. “The Executive Chairman Sir, since his assumption of Office in November, 2011 has never paid the staff allowance which form part of the Commission consolidated salary structure duly approved by the Salaries and wages Commission and this [has brought] untold hardship to the staff and exposed them to the potential danger of engaging in corrupt practices,” the letter said. In the petition, which was also copied to the National Security Advisor; the President of the Senate; the Speaker House of Representatives; and the Director General of the State Security Service, the writers urged President Buhari to thoroughly investigate Mr. Lamorde for his complicity in the cases which were compromised during his tenure as EFCC boss. The letter also called for the investigation of all six zonal heads of the EFCC, as well as the general staff of the organization. Finally the letter noted the importance of investigating the unpaid allowances of several staff members since Mr. Lamorde became the Executive Chairman of the EFCC in 2011. It would be recalled that last July, a similar petition against Mr. Lamorde was sent to the Senate by George Uboh, a security expert, alleging that the EFCC boss had fraudulently diverted over N1 trillion proceeds of corruption recovered by the agency. In his petition to the Senate, Mr. Uboh offered to produce “overwhelming evidence” to back his claims against Mr. Lamorde. In August, the Senate invited Mr. Lamorde to appear before a committee investigating the allegations, which included the claim that “over half of the assets seized from suspects are not reflected in EFCC exhibit records”. Mr. Lamorde did not honour the invitation, but he subsequently published advertorials denouncing the petition. |
The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Wednesday said the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier between the Super Eagles and Etalons of Burkina Faso would now hold on Saturday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 2016 CHAN final round first leg qualifier between the home-based senior national teams was earlier scheduled for Sunday. In a statement on its website, the NFF however said the match’s venue remains the Adokiye Amiesieamaka Stadium in Port Harcourt, with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m. Already, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Boubou Traore from Mali as the Centre Referee for the encounter. Traore’s compatriots Bobo Yomboliba, Boubacar Kinta and Harouna Coulibaly will serve as Assistant Referee 1, Assistant Referee 2 and Reserve Referee respectively. NAN reports that Angolan Pedro De Morais will be the Match Commissioner. Meanwhile, a total of 25 players are in the Nigerian team’s camp in Port Harcourt under the watchful eyes of assistant coaches Salisu Yusuf and Alloy Agu. These include goalkeepers Femi Thomas, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, David Obiazor and Okemute Odah, and defenders Chima Akas, Austin Oboroakpo, Kalu Orji, Solomon Kwambe, Idris Aloma, Samson Gbadebo, Jamiu Alimi and Stephen Eze. Others are midfielders Abdulrazak Aliyu, Ifeanyi Mathew, Paul Onobi, Usman Mohammed, Bature Yaro and Osas Okoro, and forwards Ezekiel Bassey, Chisom Chikatara, Tunde Adeniji, Prince Aggrey, Bright Onyedikachi and Dayo Ojo. NAN recalls that Nigeria failed to qualify for the first two editions of the competition, which is reserved for senior players plying their trade in their country’s domestic league. But Nigeria won bronze medal after placing third at the third edition held in South Africa early last year. The winner over two legs will be eligible for a place at the 4th African Nations Championship taking place in Rwanda early next year. |
A British nurse who was successfully treated in January after contracting Ebola in Sierra Leone is now “critically ill” due to a resurgence of the virus, the hospital treating her said on Wednesday. “We are sad to announce that Pauline Cafferkey’s condition has deteriorated and she is now critically ill. NEW YORK, NY - OCTOBER 25: A young man, dressed in a biohazard costume, stands on the corner of 546 West 147th Street on October 25, 2014 in New York City. After returning to New York City from Guinea, where he was working with Doctors Without Borders treating Ebola patients, Dr. Craig Spencer was quarantined after showing symptoms consistent with the virus. Spencer was taken to Bellevue hospital to undergo testing where he was officially diagnosed with the Ebola virus on October 23. Bryan /AFP File: Ebola Pauline is being treated for Ebola in the high-level isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital,” it said in a statement. Cafferkey was taken to the specialist unit in London – the only one of its kind in Britain — last week after being admitted to a hospital in Glasgow on Tuesday when she felt unwell. Her sister Toni has said doctors diagnosed her with a virus on Monday but had sent her home, missing an opportunity to act quickly. Health officials have contacted and are monitoring 58 people who have been in close contact with Cafferkey, 40 of whom have had direct contact with her bodily fluids — the main mode of Ebola transmission. Of the 40, 25 are receiving a vaccine and a further 15 have either declined it or were unable to receive it due to existing medical conditions. This gives cause for concern on the treated ebola cases in Nigeria. constant checks on patients treated of the virus in Nigeria and elsewhere need to be kept to avoid post-Ebola syndrome. Cafferkey was diagnosed with Ebola in December after returning to Glasgow from Sierra Leone. She spent almost a month in the isolation unit at the Royal Free Hospital and was treated with an experimental anti-viral drug and blood from survivors of the Ebola disease. Details of her condition have not been disclosed for reasons of patient confidentiality. Doctor Ben Neuman, a lecturer in virology at the University of Reading, said earlier that Cafferkey could be only the second known case of “reactivated” Ebola. “Over the past few years, there has been mounting evidence of the mental and physical problems in Ebola survivors that can last for years after the virus is cleared from the bloodstream,” he told the Science Media Centre in London. “The newly-discovered twist on this post-Ebola syndrome is that, in some cases, the health problems – often including damage to the eyes and joints — is actually caused by live Ebola virus growing in bodily fluids in some of the less-accessible compartments of the body.” The deadliest-ever Ebola outbreak since the virus was identified in central Africa in 1976 has killed 11,312 of the 28,457 people infected since December of 2013, according to the latest WHO figures. Nearly all the victims have been in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. |
The National Assembly and State House of Assembly Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Enugu on Friday upheld the declaration of Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu as the winner of the Enugu-West senatorial seat by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The three-man tribunal presided over by its chairman, Justice Michael Edem, in declaring Ekweremadu as the validly elected senator representing the Enugu-West senatorial zone dismissed the petition by the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the seat, Chief Philip Chukwudi Eze for lack of merit. In the almost two hours judgment, the tribunal noted that the petition lacked substantial evidence, while awarding the total sum of N60,000 in favour of Ekweremadu, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the last respondent. |

Days after praising Republican frontrunner Donald Trump as a “master brander” who could very well win the GOP primary, former President Bill Clinton clarified those compliments on Tuesday while firing back against Trump’s assertion that Hillary Clinton was “perhaps the worst secretary of state in history.” “Well, the thing about branding is, you don’t have to be — you can be fact-free,” Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Erin Burnett on Tuesday. “You can’t and you shouldn’t be able to insult your way to the White House.” The former president touted his wife’s efforts to impose sanctions on Iran as a precursor to the recent Iran nuclear deal. “Even the Republicans admit that the sanctions on Iran were well done,” Bill Clinton said. “And that was a major achievement, to get Russia and China to agree to sign off on these sanctions and enforce them. She did that. That’s what made the talks possible, so even the people who don’t like the Iran deal like the sanctions.” Bill Clinton defended Hillary Clinton‘s record after Trump called her “perhaps the worst secretary of state in history.” (Photos: Getty Images/AP) He also noted Hillary’s work on the New START treaty with Russia and her efforts to expand the number of beneficiaries of George W. Bush’s anti-AIDS program — PEPFAR (the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) — from 1.7 million people to 5.1 million. “These are all facts, so they’re not common to the diatribe here,” Bill Clinton said. “When she left office, the average approval rating of the United States was more than 20 points higher than it was when she came into office. I don’t think that’s nothing.” The former president also pointed out that Trump invited Hillary to his 2005 wedding. “He asked her to come to his wedding when he found out [we were] going to be in Florida,” Bill Clinton said. “And I don’t know how many times he told me what a wonderful job she did for New York as a senator after 9/11.” Bill and Hillary Clinton attended Donald and Melania Trump’s 2005 wedding at Donald Trump’s request. (ABC News via Getty Images) In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria last week, Bill Clinton complimented Trump’s ability to set himself apart in a crowded Republican field. “Being able to put a personal stamp on it so people identify who you are certainly counts for something, at least in the beginning,” Clinton said. “He’s got a lot of pizzazz and zip, he’s branded himself in a clear way, and he’s generated some excitement.” |

Three people were shot dead and three were injured when the men opened fire at the Port Shepstone taxi line on Wednesday in South Africa. Gcaba and 10 of his co-accused appeared at the Durban magistrate’s court on Friday. They face several charges, including three counts of murder and one of attempted murder. Advocate representing the accused, Jimmy Howse, claims that Gcaba was not carrying a firearm when shooting broke out. The killings come in the wake of an ongoing feud over taxi routes between Zamokuhle and the Durban-based Sonke Long Distance Association. Mfundo Gcaba is linked to Sonke. "The department of transport currently has a court interdict against Sonke to prevent it from encroaching on the route of Zamokuhle and other associations. |
Nigeria’s stocks sunk on Wednesday after JP Morgan said it would eject Africa’s biggest economy from its influential emerging markets bond index due to tough controls imposed to prevent a currency collapse. In a move that came earlier in the year than expected, JP Morgan said late on Tuesday it would remove the bond listings belonging to the West African nation by the end of October, forcing fund managers to sell Nigerian bonds, which might raise the country’s borrowing costs. The decision is a blow to President Muhammadu Buhari, who has promised to diversify an oil-dependent economy hit by a slump in global crude prices but who faces criticism for not having appointed a cabinet since his inauguration on May 29. With no finance minister in place, foreign investors have been left wondering about government policies and struggling to sell shares or bonds as the central bank adopted tough currency restrictions to halt a slide of the naira. Anders Faergemann, senior sovereign portfolio manager at PineBridge Investments, told Reuters that he was surprised that Buhari had not started tackling the country’s economic problems more than three months into his tenure. “As an investor it is flabbergasting that the Nigerian authorities have allowed themselves to be put in this situation,” he said. All Nigerian stocks listed in the MSCI frontier market index fell by about 3 percent, while bond yields spiked across maturities. In the equity segment, the market value dropped by N311 billion. The major indicators, the market capitalization and NSE All Share Index declined by 2.98 per cent to close lower at N10.129 trillion and 29,454.09 basis points respectively. Total volume of shares transacted was 459.458 million worth N4.287 billion in 3,396 deals compared to 226.648 million shares valued at N1.999 billion in 4,531 deals recorded on previously. While many foreign bonds investors have exited the market since JP Morgan warned Nigeria in January and again in June that it would get kicked out of the index unless conditions improved, stocks investors were now also pondering whether to stay. The U.S. bank had placed Nigeria on its index watch but a decision had not been expected until later this year. “You can only imagine the chaos that is unfolding here,” a regional African investment analyst said from Lagos, asking not to be named. “There are many more investors still in equities who are keenly watching how the central bank manages the exit process because if they even sniff the possibility that they won’t be able to get dollars in the future they are going to run for the door,” he said. According to Reuters the benchmark 2024 bond yield rose to 17 percent on Wednesday from 16.20 percent previous day. The stock index shed 3.02 percent to fall below a 30,000 point psychological level. In response to the decision, the CBN and ministry of finance said in a join statement signed by CBN spokesperson, Ibrahim Muazu that “while we respect the right of the J.P. Morgan to make this decision, we strongly disagree with the premise and conclusions upon which the decision rests.” CBN said it took all the measures to improve the market. Despite the fact that oil prices have fallen by nearly 60 percent in one year, which should expectedly reduce the amount of liquidity in the market, the CBN ensured that all genuine and effective demand were met, especially those from foreign investors. “On transparency, the CBN mandated that all FX transactions were posted online in the Reuters Trading Platform so that all stakeholders can easily verify all transactions in the market. In addition, the Official FX Window at the CBN was closed to ensure a level-playing field in the pricing of foreign exchange.” Meanwhile, FBN Holdings was the top decliner on the MSCI frontier market index, down 5.15 percent, followed by Guinness Nigeria, by 5 percent, and Dangote Cement and Guaranty Trust Bank, which were both down by 4.98 percent. Gboyega Akinsanmi Aggrieved officers, who retired recently from the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), on Sunday asked President Muhammadu Buhari to probe alleged mismanagement of over €20 million (N7.5 billion) European Union funds released to the NIS under the immediate past Minister for the Interior, Mr. Abba Moro. Aside, the retired officers gravely lamented negative impact, which they said, internal struggle for power and relevance between the former ministers and ex-Comptroller-General, Mr David Paradang had upon the service, thus leading to violation of federal character clause in the 1999 Constitution. The officers, who did not want their names mentioned, vented their grievances about the rots in the NIS at a session with THISDAY in Lagos, noting that what had been happening in the NIS was worse than that of Nigeria Custom Service (NCS) and Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). They said they had petitioned the Department of State Service (DSS) to investigate the mismanagement of the EU funds on immigration, which they said, was officially called the tenth EU fund apart from other donors’ funds, though nothing had been heard from the DSS about the petition. |
August 30, 2015Nicholas Ibekwe The famous British author, Frederick Forsyth, has revealed he worked as a spy for British Intelligence agency, MI6, during the Nigerian Civil War. Mr. Forsyth, who is best known for his spy novel, The Day of the Jackal, which is based on a real account of assassination plot against late French premier, Charles de Gaulle, said he was first approached by the spy agency to provide information when he was working as a reporter in Nigeria during the Nigerian civil war (1967-1970) He revealed in his just published autobiography, The Outsider: My Life, that an intelligence officer asked him to “tell us what’s going on” during the war. “For the last year of the Biafran War, I was sending… both journalistic reports to the media and other reports to my new friend,” he said. He said the MI6 wanted to confirm the report that children were dying inside Biafra. “The Foreign Office was denying that there were any dying children and they were passionate in supporting the dictatorship in Lagos, and it was oddly enough MI6 that had a different viewpoint,” he said. He said many British volunteers provided information back home to MI6 at the time that it wasn’t considered out of place. “There was no fee, no reward, you just do it. It was a different attitude back then.” He however admitted that due to his work for the spy agency, MI6 approved passages from some of his later novels. “I had a number I could ring… I’d ask, ‘Is it OK?’. They would check with superiors,” the award-winning author revealed. He said he provided information to the MI6 over a period of 20 years from other locations such as Rhodesia (present day Zimbabwe), South Africa and, East Germany during the Cold War. “It was normally a phone call: ‘can we meet – why don’t you join us for lunch? We have a little problem – would you mind slipping into East Germany and picking something us for us?'” he said. Mr. Forsyth later befriended Odumegwu Ojukwu, the Biafran secessionist leader. He wrote a biography of Ojukwu tilted: “Emeka” (1982). He had previously written a book about the war in 1969 – “The Biafra Story: The Making of an African Legend”. |

Alison ColdridgeAlison Coldridge August 25, 2015 Prepare yourself for some disappointing news. In a round up of the world’s 20 top countries to raise a family in, the United Kingdom was noticeably absent. Instead, the UK came in at 22nd place on the full 41-long list – not all that bad when you consider just how many countries there are in the world, but equally not that reassuring. While the British government has tried to initiate various childcare schemes in the past few years and the quality of free education is very good here, it still remains a very expensive country to raise a family in – and many working parents struggle to juggle their career and home life. The winning country was Austria, labeled as the best country for families because of a combination of children’s health and safety, children’s general wellbeing, a wide range of leisure activities for kids and family life in general. In Austria, companies provide parental leave following the birth of a child plus a “kindergeld” – a monthly allowance for childcare expenses until the child turns 18. So you can see why it’s such an attractive place for families to live. |
I am currently on vacation in the UK where I had hoped to have a pleasurable summer holiday. But believe me, the weather is not allowing me to have the best of time as there has been consistent rain and cold. It is as if I have just come to waste my money as I find it difficult to leave my hotel room. |
22 Aug 2015 Bennett Oghifo This recall explains the stop sale that was put in place on the Maxima back in July of this year. The issue is an improperly installed o-ring between the fuel sending unit and the gas tank which can allow fuel to leak from the attachment point. Nissan was made aware of the issue by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) after the organisation encountered a fuel leak after a crash test. If a fuel leak occurs, it would greatly increase the chances of a fire during a crash. Since Nissan uses this same fuel tank setup in other models, the company is currently investigating to see if other models will be affected by this issue and must report its findings back to NHTSA. At the moment, only 2016 Maximas built between March 19, 2015 and June 2, 2015 are affected. The Japanese automaker still has not identified a fix for this issue. Official recall notices will be mailed to dealers and owners before the end of this month. The affected vehicles are identified by their VIN number, with the issue stemming from an unidentified quality problem. A Nissan spokesman told Automotive News that it is not clear what the exact quality concern is yet or how many vehicles are involved, though the company expects the number of affected units to be small. Nissan wants to pinpoint the specific problem before making an announcement about it. The stop sale is nationwide and it took effect a few days ago, though production has not been affected. The 2016 Maxima has only been on sale for about a month. “Nissan is committed to a high level of customer service and satisfaction,” the company said in a statement. “This commitment requires Nissan to periodically place certain specific vehicles on a temporary Quality Assurance Hold to assure that these vehicles, as delivered to our customers, meet our exacting standards and our customers’ expectations.” 22 Aug 2015 Font Size: a / A 220815F-Nissan-Maxima-2016.jpg - 220815F-Nissan-Maxima-2016.jpg 2016 Nissan Maxima Bennett Oghifo This recall explains the stop sale that was put in place on the Maxima back in July of this year. AUGUST 22, 2015 : ERIC DUMO WITH AGENCY REPORT Amid the controversies generated following revelations that the newly appointed head of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Babatunde Fowler, was brandishing a fake doctorate degree from a United Kingdom institution, Irish International University, the 59-year-old has since dropped the honourary degree from his Wikipedia entry. President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday named Fowler as the new head of the FIRS, but hours after the announcement of his appointment, it emerged that his doctorate degree might have been fraudulently obtained. Sahara Reporters, an online news platform, claimed in one of its stories that Fowler’s ‘Ph.D’ obtained from IIU in May 2007 was fake. The former Lagos Internal Revenue Service boss, according to SR, “engaged in desperate efforts to erase the controversial title from the Internet especially on Wikipedia.” His biography has been edited on the website of the LIRS while the title of “Dr.” remains on his personal webpage. Seven years ago, a BBC investigation labelled IIU as a fake institution dishing out “substandard and worthless degrees” to individuals, especially influential politicians and business men from Africa. The non-existent university is said to be linked to Baron Knowth, a chartered accountant whose real name was discovered to be Jeffrey Wooller. |

On Monday, a girl who was billed to wed on Saturday returned from UK aboard British Airways flight. After going through Immigration checks, she went to the carousel to pick her luggage. As she was exiting from arrivals, she was stopped by a Nigerian Customs Service officer who directed her to open her luggage. She complied. After they searched her luggage and did not find anything incriminating, they picked her wedding gown and said it was contraband; therefore she had to pay N30, 000 tax for it. She protested and said that it was her personal effect; that she did not buy it for sale and there was only one wedding gown in her luggage. They insisted she must pay.http://www.thisdaylive.com/articles/extortionists-at-the-airports/217993/ |

The Republican candidate, Donald Trump is leading other contestants for the party’s ticket, recording 25% in opinion poll while his closest rival, Jeb Bush, pulling 13%. As things stand, and given the influence of Trump within the party, he is likely to fly the party’s ticket. This however, may not translate to victory for the Republicans due to his disposition towards migrants who constitute bulk of the United States votes. Consequently, the Democrats are favored to reproduce the Presidency come next year. |
