Health / How Exposure To Light At Night Can Negatively Impact Your Health by healthwriter1: 3:03pm On Apr 16, 2023
How exposure to light at night can negatively impact your health

With the advent of artificial light, that is light from electricity contained in a bulb, life has been so easy for humans as they can see whatever they are doing or wherever they are going, as in the daytime. Looking back in time, smoky lamps, candles, burning woods, and even moonlight were the order of the night. That is to say, throughout the era of human evolution, light has been a prerequisite necessity.

In this era, it has done a little more harm than good as people get to work into the night due to the availability of artificial light at night. Others sleep with lights on at night as it is said to make them comfy and not afraid of the dark. These innovations have proven over time to cause negative health outcomes due to the interruption of the said light on sleep.

Circadian rhythm, melatonin, and sleep cycle are all parameters that ensure sound sleep, but when exposed to light at night, they become defective. The prolonged effects of light exposure at night on these parameters tend to bring about negative health outcomes. Below are the possible negative health outcomes and their triggers considering nighttime light exposure as a risk factor.

Breast cancer:

Breast cancer is a common malignancy among women as it is the second-rated type of cancer. Apart from the known risk factors like sedentary lifestyles, genes, aging, and long-term use of contraceptives, studies have linked Light at night exposure to a risk of breast cancer. Factors like circadian rhythm and oxidation, when induced by light regularly, can lead to cancer. Also during light exposure, melatonin secretion, the sleep hormone, when inhibited repeatedly can lead to DNA damage, oxidative stress, and estrogen synthesis; all these when accumulated for a long time, may lead to breast cancer. A very recent study has shown a positive association between light exposure and breast cancer risk, stating that premenopausal women are at much higher risk.

Type 2 diabetes

Diabetes, known as one of the leading metabolic diseases, has been associated with night-time light exposure. Sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm disruption as a result of light exposure have been said to interfere with metabolic activity in the body which may lead to type 2 diabetes. When exposed to light at night time, there is a reduced glucose tolerance and impaired insulin sensitivity as a result of sleep deprivation. However, available studies did not give a better understanding of the mechanism associated with circadian rhythm and sleep deprivation on glucose and insulin metabolism.

Cardiovascular disease

This is also a risk for exposure to light at night time as a result of circadian rhythm disruption. A study that measured circadian expression on biomarkers of cardiovascular health in Zebra finches, showed that there was increased nighttime activity and cardiac hypertrophy, especially among males. On light exposure during night time, heart rate tends to increase, over time, this may lead to cardiovascular disease.

Obesity

Obesity, which Is a precursor of other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, is among the risks associated with nighttime light exposure. When there is sleep deprivation as a result of light exposure, it affects the endocrine and metabolic activities that occur in the body. During sleep deprivation, there tends to be an alteration in adipose and adipocyte accumulation during LAN. In addition, a reduction in the levels of melatonin in the body is associated with weight gain leading to obesity.

Mood disorder
Excessive light exposure at night has been correlated to depressive moods. An observational study carried out on mice showed a depressive-like behavior among them on exposure to light at night without affecting circadian rhythm. This was due to light mediation through the suprachiasmatic nucleus, that is light from the retina to the brain part known as habenula. Also, humans, imaging studies have shown the brain part, habenula, is also sensitive to light in humans.

Conclusion
Exposure to light at night time has been researched and stated as a bedrock or risk factor for health implications such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and mood disorders. These may not be the only health implications as research is still ongoing to bring all the implications of light exposure into the limelight. In other, for you to prevent and avert these health implications, sleeping in the dark and avoidance of staying into the night is a prerequisite. Sleep is a reliever of so many ailments, and countering it could lead to several problems.

Here are 5 natural and effective ways to quit smoking

It is no secret that withdrawing from smoking cigarettes or the like is a very hard nut to crack. Many people have fallen out from the journey to quit smoking as it takes so much courage, perseverance, and discipline which most people don't have.

Sometimes it could be that the techniques you are using aren't working and you feel frustrated or it could be that you can't keep up with it anymore as the cravings to smoke are more than your willpower.

Below are 5 natural ways that could help you quit smoking without having to do too much. These ways are science-backed and can help you on your journey to quit smoking.

Here we go!!

1. Relish on your "why" every day.

Before your journey to quit smoking cigarettes, there must be a reason you are quitting. It could be to save money, improve your health, or start a new family. Whatever the reason, you have to relish and ponder on it every single day as this will serve as a motivation for you to be determined on your journey. To make this easy, you can make a list of reasons why you have to quit smoking on paper and put it where you can see it every day.

2. Chew on raw carrots, veggies, or sugar-free gum

It is very normal for you to get cravings to smoke now and then. That is where carrots, veggies, and chewing gums become your friend. Chewing on raw carrots whenever you have cravings to smoke can prevent you from getting a relapse. If you are not a fan of carrots, you can try out crunchy vegetables like cabbage and celery. Or better still, you can chew on gums but they have to be sugar-free to avoid health complications.

3. Don't miss out on a daily vitamin C intake.

Do you know that smoking cigarettes reduce the level of vitamin C that should be absorbed in your body? This phenomenon heightens the urge to smoke cigarettes, as low Vitamin C equals an increased urge to smoke. The reason you must ingest vitamin C daily is that it helps to reduce smoking cravings and also helps to boost your immune system which must have been weakened by smoking. Lime juice can be your staple source of vitamin C.

4. Exercising in nature could be the way.

Exercise has been proven to help different ailments and "trying to quit smoking" is not left out. Moderate running, swimming, jogging, and walking in nature can help tame the craving to smoke. Whenever you feel the urge, going out to take a walk in nature could help by giving you a positive mindset and increasing your motivation

5. Be fully armored

Whatever controls your smoking cravings should be fully stocked in your fridge. Is it chewing gums? Always keep it handy wherever you go. You don't want a situation when you get the urge and you don't have anything to calm nibble or chew on.

Takeaway

In as much as quitting cigarette smoking is very hard, indulging in one or a combination of two or more of these ways can make your journey easy.

Say no to smoking as it damages your lungs and makes you liable to die young.
