The lands which the British wanted to build Portharcourt was Igu-ocha and Obumotu, however, the original site was Igu-ocha. After the British finished the port, it was called Port-Harcourt after the then Secretary of colonies, Lord Vernon Harcourt. The city has since expanded to include other areas including Obumotu but the locals still call it by its original name of Igu-ocha. Some misspell the name by writing Igweocha but the pronunciation still remains the same.
