kissingerliond: This is not just another number; it’s Nigeria finally breathing with its own lungs.
₦5.17 trillion surplus shows we can export more than we import. If we build on this, we can stabilize the naira, expand reserves, and fund infrastructure without borrowing.
Question: How much of this surplus is non-oil? The latest reports indicated that our export is more than import |

WizardOfNG: Yes but assured returns on their investment is critical to investors committing their money.
It then becomes about whether Nigeria has the market that can afford the tariff levels that will allow investors recoup their capital and returns on investment. Nigerians will pay trust me. It's because we are used to free government services that's why some people don't pay their electricity bill. If they get value for their money, it will be easy to pay |

WizardOfNG: It's a mixture of a few things. Cost is a big issues as power supply, across generation, transmission and distribution, is very expensive. Our Minister of Power estimates that 10 billion dollars is needed over ten years, equating 100 billion dollars, for Nigeria to gain constant power.
Private companies could bear a significant part of the cost ,working with Government in PPP arrangement i.e private public sector partnership.
Yet, virtually non would be attracted to most states of Nigeria because people of many States of our nation cannot pay enough, tariffs-wise, to allow these companies collect their capital over time plus considerable Return on Investment (ROI) that would make the venture worthwhile for them.
This is why I am always amused when ignorant Nigerians shout "we can have 24/7 electricity using all the money politicians are looting" and attack Adelabu who is doing a good job per issues he can control and have impact on.
Today, decades of under-investment in our near moribund power sector infrastructure now means it requires significant upgrade and modernising at huge costs.
In the SW, as I don't like to speak for other regions, Lagos will achieve 24/7 power supply in the near future. It's obvious from how the State is moving.
A clue is how Lagos has moved to rename Distribution companies in the State. I believe this allows them to set tariffs independent of what other States are doing.
The thinking would be that , per fully privatised power sector, setting of tariff now becomes a State thing no Nigerian can attack FG over.
If Lagos increase tariff, higher than anywhere else in Nigeria, to secure 24/7 power to the State, they will not tolerate protest as they will justifiably insist they have the authority to do so and anyone displeased can move to a cheaper State because Lagos cannot remain underdeveloped kowtowing to issues of "affordability" over critical sectors it needs PPP arrangements to make work optimally.
Possible, perhaps later, for Ogun State and Oyo also to gain significant improvement in power supply. The other three SW States will need to leverage on the capacity of Lagos, Ogun and Oyo in a regional array as DAWN commission proposes. Foreign investors can do the magic without them sweating |

WizardOfNG: You're right. Just saw similar announced yesterday. An FG 100 billion Naira initiative to power public sector infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, and government buildings, with clean energy replacing diesel generators.
What the Government should consider later, when the economy improves enough, is a specialised agency that will partner with qualified companies to sell and fit solar system, to Nigerians with a 30 to 5O% discount.
This will really improve the use of solar power in homes and businesses considering sunny weather virtually all year round is a blessing Nigeria enjoys
The UK, with long periods of inadequate sunshine , especially in the winter and autumn months, still gives Briton a grant on solar system they purchase to encourage a move towards cleaner and more sustainable energy.
https://punchng.com/fg-to-tackle-energy-cost-in-public-institutions-with-n100bn-solar-initiative/ The state governors are yet to take power generation seriously. They now have the power to generate their own electricity but they are still jonzing |

So much going on that is good but not publicised. I was not aware this bill was sponsored let alone as advanced as needing executive assent which Mr.President has now provided. I read about another initiative about food security with solar power for the farmers. That's yet to make it properly to news. So many projects, development, reforms and policies under this government which are already shaping things. We are finished people will be finished with stuffs like this |
