The definition for haploid is often written “ Half number of chromosomes” Is Wrong! The correct one is “ One complete set of chromosomes which has half number of chromosomes than diploid set” Organisms are composed of cells. The cell, therefore, is the most basic unit of life. However, an organism is not reducible to individual cells. That is to say that a living organism depends on the intricate ways in which its cells differentiate, specialise and interact. Every aspect of a cell is governed by the expression of its collection of genes. Genes are composed of nucleotides that are organised into a molecule known as DNA. DNA is considered to be the basic unit of information in biological systems. DNA codes for proteins. This is only a minority of the whole strand, however, and the rest was considered “junk”. The junk (non-coding) sections of DNA also serve important purposes, such as regulation of gene expression. There are many other genetic interactions that are just as important as the coding sections in determining how an organism develops. Evolution: DNA replication is imperfect. The presence of mutagens, faulty genetic repair mechanisms and the sheer number of replications means that mutations inevitably occur. Some prokaryotic organisms can also exchange genetic material with each other. Viruses can also introduce changes to an organism’s DNA. Since the advent of sexual reproduction, DNA is also being altered at each instance of reproduction. All of these things mean that DNA changes over subsequent generations. This also means that a population will have variation, differences between each individual. Some changes are detrimental to an organism’s survival. Some changes may improve an organism’s survivability. As long as an organism is a reproductive success, its genes will stand a chance of being passed on. Environmental factors will affect an organism’s ability to reproduce. These are known as selection pressures and will, in effect, filter a (varied) population for those best able to survive those pressures. This is known as natural selection. There is competition within each niche between organisms that fill that niche. In order to survive, other organisms must either fill other niches or populate a different environment. This process has continued for an unimaginably long period over an even greater number of generations of organism that must fill niches that are always changing. This process is more than capable of producing the massive spectrum of organisms that exist today. Each organism is well-adapted enough to survive and successfully reproduce in its niche. There is no such thing as a “pinnacle of evolution” |
Vultures’ digestion may hold the key to preventing biological warfare. Vulture stomachs can process and sterilize anthrax spores, and when they eat botulism-infected carcasses, the bacteria gets killed. When vultures eat dead rodents containing hantavirus, the disease ends in their system, and they’re fine. Normal Vital signs in human adults: Temperature Rectal (most accurate) / Aural (the ear) is 99.6 F/ 37.7 Oral is 98.6 F / 37 C Blood pressure: systolic (100-120 mmHg), diastolic below (80 mm Hg) Pulse: normal resting pulse can range between 60-100 beats per minute. This number is decreased in athletes. The immune system is very complex and can fight many diseases on its own. |
