A Nigerian born scientist, Samuel Achilefu, has won the prestigious St. Louis Award for 2014 for creating cancer-visualizing glasses. Dr. Achilefu, a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering, and his team developed the imaging technology in cancer diagnosis into a wearable night vision-like goggles so surgeons could see the cancer cells while operating. “They basically have to operate in the dark,” Bloomberg Businessweek quoted Dr. Achilefu, 52, as saying. “I thought, what if we create something that let’s you see things that aren’t available to the ordinary human eye.” Dr. Achilefu won a scholarship from the French government to study at the University of Nancy, according to St. Louis Post-Dispatch, a regional newspaper in St. Louis, U.S., and is the 87th person to receive the annual award since it was established in 1931. Married with two young children, Dr. Achilefu moved to St. Louis after he was hired by Mallinckrodt to start a new research department. “Our efforts start with two words: ‘What if?'” Dr. Achilefu said during his acceptance speech. “These words may sound simple, but they embody the belief that each person has the potential to make a difference, if only he or she can take the time to understand the problem.” According to Bloomberg, the researchers’ technology requires two steps: First, surgeons inject a tiny quantity of an infrared fluorescent marker into the patient’s bloodstream. The peptides contained in the marker enables it to locate cancer cells and buries itself inside. After the tracer flows through a patient’s body and clears from non-cancerous tissue – which lasts about four hours – the operation would begin. Wearing the goggle, the doctor can inspect tumours under an infra red light that reacts with the dye, causing cancer cells to glow from within. This month, the goggles have been used on humans for the first time by surgeons at the Washington University School of Medicine. Four patients suffering from breast cancer and over two dozen patients with melanoma or liver cancer have been operated on using the goggles since they were developed. “The goggles function fantastically,” says Ryan Fields, a surgical oncologist who is collaborating with Dr. Achilefu to improve on the technology. “They allow us to see the cells in real time, which is critical. Because the marker has not yet been FDA-approved, doctors are currently using a different, somewhat inferior marker that also reacts with infrared light.” Julie Margenthaler, a breast cancer surgeon, says tens of thousands of women who had had breast cancer lumpectomies go back for second operations every year because of the inability to see the microscopic extent of the tumours. “Imagine what it would mean if these glasses eliminated the need for follow-up surgery and the associated pain, inconvenience and anxiety.” Dr. Achilefu and his team began work in 2012 after they received $2.8 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Before then, they had been working on a lean budget provided by the Department of Defence’s Breast Cancer Research Program. After it was developed, the team spent years testing the technology on mice, rats, and rabbits to confirm the efficacy of the goggles. “Nobody would believe us until we showed that the goggles work,” Dr. Achilefu says. The Food and Drug Administration are still reviewing the goggles and a related dye Dr. Achilefu and his co-researchers developed, according to Washington University in St. Louis, a St. Louis based journal. Dr. Achilefu says he intends to keep Washington University as the primary centre for clinical trials to evaluate the technology in patients. “Making a difference in society should be the goal of everybody,” Dr. Achilefu NB: Sometimes I wonder why news as such don't trend in Nigeria Tonto dickeh dis...fiam...front page Mercy aigbe's daughter dis.....fiam....front page Fayose's son dat....fiam...front page I ask...is this progress or retrogress ?

The corpses being taken away Kelechi Tempers flared on Wednesday on Obele Lawanson Community, Surulere, Lagos, after a family of seven died in a fire disaster. Our correspondent was told that the victims, who lived on 23, Michael Ogun Street, died because their co-tenants did not make effort to rescue them when they called out for help around 11.30pm on Tuesday. Those killed were a textile material dealer, 28-year-old Kelechi Onoja; his wife, 18-year-old Nkiru; their one year and eight months old first child, Favour; their three weeks unnamed second baby boy; two yet-to-be-identified family members; and Nkiru’s 80-year-old mother. PUNCH Metro learnt that the only survivor was six-year-old Chidinma, a relative, who sustained burns injuries to her face and hands. Our correspondent gathered that Nkiru had just given birth to her baby and her mother had visited for the Omugo rites, a popular Igbo culture of a mother nursing her daughter’s baby. She was said to be preparing to return on Wednesday with the two unnamed ladies she brought with her, when tragedy struck. The landlord of the house was late, while his immediate son lived in the Ijesha area. The landlord’s grandson, Abdul Jelili, who lives opposite the apartment, said, “I was sleeping when I heard a noise and quickly rushed out. I saw smoke coming out of their apartment and quickly got a stick, with which I broke their toilet window. “Smoke billowed out, but I did not hear any movement in the house and could not tell if anybody was in. All the tenants in the other apartments did not come out, so I had to rush out to call for help.” Another resident, Ejike Okpara, explained that the neighbours did not help because there was animosity among the five tenants in the house. He said Nkiru had been accused of not greeting the other tenants, among other issues, which had caused series of fight in the neighbourhood. He said, “So, when the fire began, the neighbours from both sides did not come out. When they finally came out, it was to rescue their families.” But a tenant, Uzor Alajemba, said he had to first rescue his family when he heard someone raise the alarm. PUNCH Metro learnt that youths and other members of the community eventually mobilised to the scene to combat the inferno. A man, who claimed to be part of the rescue, Chima Dimkpa, explained that the burglar-proof bars made rescue difficult. It was learnt that the grandma had used a candle light to bathe the baby in the night, and forgot to put it off. Our correspondent was told that after burning out, the fire ignited the table and engulfed the room. The 80-year-old woman was burnt to death. Kelechi, who had also woken up with other members of the family, reportedly called for help. He was said to have held tightly to the two sisters, while his wife carried their boy in her hand. They were burnt to death together. Dimkpa said, “We could have rescued them but for the bars. Everything was smoking hot and untouchable, including the wall.” A landlord on Ade Close, whose house shared a fence with the apartment, told PUNCH Metro the fire could have escalated, but for the support of his tenants. The man, who did not identify himself, said he mobilised his tenants to fight the flames from the roof. A security guard, Desmond Mazeli, explained that officials of the Federal Fire Service arrived at the scene around 2am on Wednesday, adding that the lone survivor was taken out through the window. Mazeli said no one knew the victim was in the toilet, until she coughed and was quickly rescued by the firefighters. He said, “I used a neighbour’s car to convey her to a private hospital in our area, while somebody called the Lagos State Emergency Ambulance Service. “At about 3am, the ambulance arrived, together with policemen from the Area C command. She was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital.” Kelechi Our correspondent observed as some friends and family members of the deceased, who got the news on Wednesday, broke down in tears. Kelechi’s elder sister, Obioma Onoja, said she was only told there was a fire outbreak in the house, but not that her brother’s family was involved. She said, “I got a call this morning that there was a fire outbreak in their house. I did not know the whole family was dead.” Nkiru’s brother, Michael Awuzie, said they had arranged to see the family on Sunday for the child’s christening. Awuzie wondered why it was only their apartment that was affected, adding that the police needed to investigate. He said, “Mama went to the market yesterday in preparation to leave for the village today (Wednesday) with the foodstuffs for the Omugo. “It was to announce to the villagers that her daughter had given birth and she had brought the foodstuffs as a proof of the good news. And now, they have all died.” The traditional leader of the Surulere area, Kareem Awoyemi, said he could not believe that the neighbours deserted the victims when they called for help. Awoyemi said, “I still don’t understand it. Are people not living in this house?” Our correspondent learnt that the deceased’s charred remains had been handed over to the police, who had deposited them in a morgue. The spokesperson for the National Emergency Management Agency, South-West Zone, Ibrahim Farinloye, said, “ The cause of the fire is yet to be known.” The Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasak Fadipe, said the agency responded to 12 fire disasters over the night, explaining that there was a need for increased vigilance among residents. “We are still at a loss over why the casualty was that high because the fire itself was not that severe. “The kitchen was not affected, so nobody can explain why it was that serious,” he said. The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Joe Offor, confirmed the incident. He added that the police had taken the corpses to a morgue. http://www.punchng.com/metro-plus/fire-kills-family-of-seven-in-lagos-apartment/

One of the most beautiful things to witness as a mother or father is to watch the slow growth and maturing of a new soul, born into this world with fresh eyes and a playful, childlike understanding of life. But what happens when, as a mother or father, you bring into this world a child who displays a variety of unusual and incongruous traits with that of being a youngster? Instead of being wide-eyed and simplistic, your child is perceptive and complex. Instead of being naïve and spontaneous, your child is sensible and knowing. Instead of being fresh and uncomplicated, your child is experienced and intuitive. All in all, instead of being young at heart, your child is undeniably and unmistakeable old at heart. The reality is that if your child does not fit the typical mold of his or her age group, you might have an Old Soul on your hands. And if you didn’t fit the norm of the kids your age growing up, you’re most likely an Old Soul as well. Although strange and perplexing, the Old Soul child is one of the greatest unexpected blessings life has to offer not only because of their innate wisdom, but also because of the level-headed stability they have to offer. If you are struggling to relate to your child, understand where they are coming from, or simply want some closure, you might benefit from reading the signs below: 1. They are otherworldly. You don’t know what exactly it is about your child… but something about them seems out of place. The best word you can think to describe your son or daughter is that they are “otherworldly”. In short, they just don’t seem to be from this world, and often times they are very much in a world of their own making. 2. They are pensive. While the other parents are kicking balls, shooting hoops and taking their little tykes to playgroup, your child seems to be withdrawn, dreamy and contemplative. In other words, your child seems to be in a perpetually pensive state, quietly absorbed in their own meditative world. 3. They struggle to fit in with other children their age. Although they usually attempt to blend in with the children in their age group, if your child is an Old Soul they will gradually lose interest in the conversations, interests and dramas of the kid’s their age. Sometimes this can result in being bullied and picked on, especially in school, and so they can sometimes live their childhood and pubescent years as outcasts. 4. They can relate to people much older than them. If your child is an Old Soul you will notice that they often gravitate towards spending time with older people. For example, at school they usually tend to befriend the teachers, and in the family social life, they tend to enjoy talking to older people (e.g. grandparents, adult friends, retirees). This is because psychologically, they are on the same level. 5. They don’t like listening to authority and can be perceived as “smart asses”. Far from being anarchic, Old Soul children are highly intelligent, astute and observant and so are not as susceptible to blindly obeying authority as childlike children are. Instinctively feeling themselves to be equals to their adult peers, Old Soul children tend to get in trouble with figures of authority while growing up, easily seeing through the puerile, flawed and illogical demands they are often confronted with. Therefore, in school and in home life, the Old Soul child will often not hesitate to argue or wisecrack his or her way out of unreasonable punishments or requests. 6. They tend to spend a lot of their time alone. If your child is an Old Soul, they will find it difficult to integrate into the social circles of their age group. Coupled with their contemplative natures, Old Soul children will often spend time alone despite their often well-developed social skills. This is not because the child is anxious or depressive, but simply because they are comfortable in their own company and rarely need to depend on anyone else to provide them with enjoyment and stimulation. 7. They are very inquisitive. Seeking to perpetually build on their knowledge and wisdom from a young age, Old Soul children love to ask many questions about the world in different shapes and forms. If your child is an Old Soul, they can often be found reading books, exploring the world, experimenting and asking surprising questions. 8. They are “underachievers” or “overachievers”. Depending on the temperament of your child, if they are more emotional and creative, they will often work hard at school in an attempt to please you. However, if your child is more logical and scholarly, they will often rebel against the schooling system, sensing the flaws and limitations of such a system they are forced to be a part of. 9. They are responsible and independent. One of the most noticeable characteristics of the Old Soul child is that they are unusually stable and reliable. For this reason, many parents who have Old Soul children often find themselves leaning on them for support, advice and assistance. While the good-natured Old Soul child is happy to help whenever needed, eventually, if they are given too many responsibilities or depended on too heavily, they will seek distance and freedom. 10. They sound like a “little old man” or “little old woman”. Sometimes, out of the blue, a witty interjection, or incisive question will arise from your child if they are an Old Soul. The best way to describe your child’s wisdom beyond years is that they sound like a “little old man or woman” unexpectedly giving advice and counsel. |
