It was a bright and sunny morning, Mike had just woken up from sleep. As was his usual custom for some months, he turned on his mobile internet connection to check the status of his investments. Something was off; the mobile app of the investment firm was not working. Soon after, he received a message from Jerry who was one of his friends he had convinced to invest in the platform.

Jerry wrote “Mike, there is fire on the mountain, the website of that company you convinced me to invest in has disappeared. They have deleted their social media handles. I read somewhere on the internet that they have crashed! Mike, you know it’s the money I was saving for my house rent I used to invest, what am I going to do?”

Sports / Surebet247 Blocks Microsoft's Security Researcher For Exposing Data Breach by Heptapodbits(m): 10:55am On Jan 08, 2020
A popular online sports betting company in Nigeria, SureBet247, blocked Microsoft's Regional Director and MVP for Developer Security, Troy Hunt on Twitter for exposing a data breach affecting the company. An anonymous source had tipped off Troy Hunt of the data leak which he subsequently investigated.

"The data was sent to me by an anonymous party who wanted the incident to come to light. They’d tried to make contact with Surebet247 but stated it was without success. The data is extensive spanning over 32GB of backups across 6 databases of various online betting assets. Within the databases there’s everything from user records to betting histories, the latter consuming more than 100M rows in one of the databases," said Hunt.......

You're welcome
Business / ||scam Alert!!! Firs Scam Email (firs Tax Clearance Certificate.. Issued For ~ by Heptapodbits(m): 5:19pm On Sep 24, 2019
If you’re a business person or run an organization that has an active online presence, you need to be wary of this email. The subject is “FIRS TAX CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE.. ISSUED FOR ~ ( yourname@yourdomain.com ) or “CO-OPERATE BUSSINESS TAX CLEARANCE CERTIFICATE.”

I say this because a small business received 3 of these emails in the month of August, meaning it is widespread. Scammers typically cast their net wide and send to as many targets as possible in order to maximize returns on efforts expended.

At first glance, the Emails appear legitimate and to an untrained user, it would most surely fool them. This is because as is common knowledge, the Federal Inland Revenue Service has an online portal where you can apply for a Tax Clearance Certificate. They usually send updates via email when you apply on the portal. The only difference is they never send the e-TCC as an attachment but rather send a link to their portal where you can log in and download the file. But most business owners might not know this, and after having applied, receiving such an Email would most likely prompt then to download the attachment. For those that have not applied, just seeing an Email from the FIRS is enough motivation for them to click and download. This is because as a business person, the number one government organization that has a direct impact on your business is the FIRS. Hence the fraudsters choosing to use this pretext is quite ingenious.

Crime / How To Prevent Your Laptop From Getting Stolen By Using Access Control by Heptapodbits(m): 1:15am On Feb 24, 2019
There’s a very important lesson that sometimes gets forgotten when it comes to securing information. After implementing a wide range of security controls, such as firewalls or using anti-virus programs, an attacker can still get access to an asset if physical security is neglected. Physical Access Control describes the mechanisms for admitting and denying a user access to your environment. It can be considered the first line of defense and should be a top priority for any organization. But sometimes securing physical access to an organization’s building can fall to the bottom of the list in business priorities as can be seen from the video below.

Education / Why Critical Thinking Is For Everyone by Heptapodbits(m): 12:56am On Feb 24, 2019
I recently enrolled in a course for intelligence analysts. I did this to get a better grasp on how to conduct online investigations. The first module of the course was on critical thinking, and I was surprised to find out its almost universal applicability. Hence, starting with this blog post and in subsequent weeks, I will explain in non-technical terms, how to think critically.

In order not to put the cart before the horse, we must understand the essence and need for critical thinking, before going into how to do it.

Critical thinking to put it rather plainly is engaging those evaluative dispositional attitudes of the mind in forming beliefs and conclusions that most likely correspond with reality. This is in direct opposition to non-critical thinking. Non-critical thinking is the act of absorbing data or information without evaluation. Non-critical thinking is often how we learn about the world, this is because learning in its most basic form consists of the assimilation of information. As an example, let's imagine you applied to join an organization called the Intergalactic Transporters. They require that all prospective members pass an aptitude test based on their particle beam transport manual. In such a situation, your best bet would be to read and understand their manual if your aim was to pass the exam and not to try and evaluate their manual......
