there is a dearth of quality mentorship as most of the profs in the field are perpetuating a vicious cycle of academic frustration on intending professionals in this field.
My advice! start learning how to write and apply for grants now or as soon as you can. Do your best to get information online concerning study grants, research societies and internship. It is necessary for your success. It is only in Nigeria that microbiologists are consciously being frustrated in their attempts to earn their living from their field of study. DO NOT CONTINUE WITH A BSC PROGRAMME IN MICROBIOLOGY IF YOU WANT TO SUCCEED! It would have been better to look outside the shores of this country for the opportunity and chance to follow what you (claim to) love. I wish you best of luck
AmaUwana: Hy nairalanders... Pls help me out. I'm in my 100 level studying microbiology in a state uni hoping to further in VIROLOGY. Should I rewrite JAMB and go for med lab science or continue with microbiology?
Virology is pretty wide itself! Very few people go down that line, simply because of the cost of doing quality research in that field. There is Human virology, plant virology and animal virology
I personally would advise you to go for medical laboratory science, if you can, then specialise in infectious disease pathology diagnosis (aka medical microbiology), that is if you are interested in the medical field. There is a postgraduate degree course in Virology at the university of Ibadan and fortunately, then prefer medical doctors or medical laboratory scientists as students.
But if you won't mind being a plant pathologist/virologist, then stick with microbiology. Unfortunately, a lot of microbiology lecturers today don't know practical jack sh*t about virology. And you might have to take courses under botany to solidify your knowledge of plant virology. As for animals, go and study veterinary medicine if you like that field

drcast: “A research shows that individuals who pursue their passions as side-gigs and gradually build up are much more successful over the long-haul. This is because there’s less pressure, so you can take more risks. Don’t quit your job too fast.”

I quit my job today. No presents from me this Christmas.
What one often sees as a pursuit of true passion can lead to hate, disgust and financial ruin if not pursued properly.
That’s why when you have a full-time job in place it is critical to find ways to build your other opportunity on the side until it reaches a point where you can feel confident in supporting your current life on its returns.
Bottom line: While working at your day’s job, be on the lookout for side hustle you could be building till you are able to get maximum returns to sustain you
AutoJoshNG: It depends on the type of vehicle in question.
For instance, the cost of clearing a 2005 Toyota Corolla is about N360k, while the clearing cost of some more recent luxury vehicles can even go above N30m.
