I grew up as a young lad to see my dad smoke like his life depended on it. At a very young age he would send us to go buy him his normal smoke. At a point we got used to his normal but we weren’t bold enough to smoke. But sometimes, I and my younger siblings would imitate our dad by hiding at the backyard and smoking empty paper wrapped like a cigarette and lit with fire. We didn’t know what we were doing but all we knew was that that was what our dad did it.

I didn’t like the feel of the empty paper because it made us cough and was shoking so we wanted something real, something better and we got it when my younger brother suggested we start stealing from our dad’s stuff and smoke and that was a beginning of an addiction that wouldn’t end. We were able to steal from our dad’s stuff and wrap it the same way we saw him did and started smoking. Back then, youths who smoked were seen as bad guys so whenever we finished smoking it was like a crown was put on our heads cos at that point we thought we were bad guys.

At a point my dad got to know his stuff was always missing so instead of stealing his stuff we started stealing his money to buy for ourselves. We would steal money from our parents and wait till whenever my dad sends me or any of my siblings to go buy his favorite (captain black) and we would buy ours and hid it and start smoking it. Because we lived in a face me I face you compound we were able to influence some of our peers and taught them how to smoke captain jack. So whenever we were at the backyard alone killing lizards we’d bring out our stuff and smoke.

Smoking wasn’t my thing because I grew up as a calm, intelligent and respectful boy but I was just influenced by what my dad was doing. Though my dad never asked us to smoke but we were young, naive and curious. We just wanted to experience what my dad was experiencing. Smoking for my dad was an addiction because even though my mom fought with him to stop he just couldn’t. At a point, he started taking the stuff with him to the toilet because of my mom. But whenever he came out from the toilet you’d know that something has happened. My mom complained and complained until she got tired and left him to his fate. Dad later died of tuberculosis though.

Though my dad was an experienced smoker he never suspected we were smoking or maybe he suspected but couldn’t imagine that his kids who were still in primary school were smoking. We actually stopped at a point when one of our friends threatened to inform our dad what we were doing. Smoking as a group led us into other vices because we were always filled with criminal ideas after smoking and one was sex.

Back then there was this neighbor of ours from the east and their beautiful daughter who happened to be our age mate. I’m going to share how we got into the sexual market later on..

The English dictionary defines addiction as the fact or condition of being addicted to a particular substance or activity. With the rise of technology came the rise In addiction because nowadays, the internet has made it easier for people to have access to things that can trigger an addiction. While some are battling with just one addiction, some others are battling with multiple.

Today I would like us to talk about different addictions that people are getting addicted to nowadays.

- Marijuana
Marijuana popularly known as igbo in Nigeria or cannabis is gotten from the leaf, seed of the plant called cannabis sativa. The effect of cannabis makes it easier for people to get addicted to it. Some people find it very hard to let go of it. There are actually some people who don’t drink alcohol but can’t do without marijuana.

- Alcohol
While some people take alcohol whenever they’re happy, some takes it when they are sad and depressed. And with the present decaying economic condition of Nigeria a lot of people are finding succor in alcohol which is while beer parlors are springing up daily to satisfy this addiction. So many people have gotten addicted to alcohol from just a sip, from a sip to a bottle and from a bottle to drinking a crate.

- Mastubation
Mastubation is one addiction that is ravaging the youth. It may be due to the lack of sexual satisfaction from the opposite sex, inability to get married due to the present economic condition or just hatred for the opposite gender. At first Mastubation always feels good until it becomes an addiction that doesn’t go.

- Cocaine
Though it may seem that Nigerians are not involved in this because of its high cost but in some states where the purchasing power is high, some youths are into it. Anyone addicted to the use of cocaine can sell his/her parents house just to get high. In developed countries, people hooked on crack and cocaine are sent to rehabilitation centers for recovery but unfortunately, there are only few rehabilitation centers for addicts In Nigeria like IRC Abuja that are helping out.

- Gambling
Oops if I don’t mention this then I may not be forgiven. Gambling has destroyed more lives than it has saved. Sport betting and others has made a lot of rich people poorer. Inasmuch as we think men are into gambling, it will interest you to know that women are gradually catching up. I always laugh whenever I see people with a long paper complaining about how one game cut their game LOL it’s always one or two games so that you can play again hoping to win this time.

- Heroin
Heroin is a highly addictive analgesic drug derived from morphine, often used illicitly as a narcotic producing euphoria. It is used with the aid of a syringe and inserted into the blood stream. Once addicted to heroin it’s very difficult to recover unless through treatment.

- Sex
Sex can be addictive too if not controlled. It’s hard for some people to stay a day without having sex and though sex can be seen as enjoying its addiction also has its cons too. Can sexual addiction be treated ? Of course all addiction can be treated not just with therapy but medically treated.

I know a guy that earns N600k per month but is always broke because of addiction. As parents, we mustn’t allow that habit in our kids to grow into an addiction because addicted people are frivolous, squanderers and waster of resources that should have been used for more better things.
