mercytripletz: From Third Class at LASU to overall best PhD graduate at UNILAG
TUNBOSUN OGUNDARE writes on the striking achievement of Oluwaseyi Ajibade, who recently graduated with the best Ph.D thesis in his set from the University of Lagos, Akoka.
By TUNBOSUN OGUNDARE Last updated Apr 12, 2019
Oluwaseyi Ajibade stole the show at the 50th convocation ceremonies of the University of Lagos held last week. They were 5,405 graduands in all from the Postgraduate School of the university for the occasion. 150 of them, including Ajibade, are PhD holders, while 4,771 have master’s degree and the rest diploma.
But Ajibade, 37, stood out from the rest as he was called repeatedly to the podium to receive his numerous prizes and also have a handshake with the eminent personalities on stage, including the chancellor, pro-chancellor and vice chancellor of the university, Dr Abubakar Ibn Umar El-Kanemi, Dr Wale Babalakin and Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, respectively.
He was, indeed, a cynosure at the event.
Interestingly, 13 years ago, Ajibade’s story was not that inspiring as he graduated for his first degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo.
Though, he had been somehow brilliant right from his primary school days up to the time he was at the Baptist Boys High School, Abeokuta, Ogun State, and also at Nigerian Navy Secondary School, also in Abeokuta, where he had his junior and senior secondary school education respectively, he graduated from LASU unsung.
“I graduated with a Third Class degree from LASU. And that should be due to a number of factors which I may not be able to explain,” he said.
But today, Ajibade’s story is different. He was a toast of all at the convocation. This is not only because he has turned out to be the overall best PhD graduate of his set; he graduated from the prestigious ivory tower that prides itself as ‘the university of first choice and the nation’s pride.’
Ajibade, who hails from Lagos Island, was ahead of 149 other graduands in his set, including Olumide Oyebade, who won the best PhD thesis in Humanities and also the renowned comedian, Helen Paul, who bagged a PhD in Theatre Arts, to lead the pack.
For that, he won the overall best PhD Thesis prize in the Postgraduate School, and also in the field of Science and Engineering. He also received a cash prize from the institution’s alumni association and from the Postgraduate School, among others.
Ajibade studied Metallurgical and Material Engineering and not mechanical engineering which he studied at undergraduate level. He said he opted for the course because that is where his strength lies.
He explained that he caught the vision in his 300 level days at LASU when he was the only student in a class of over 120 people who scored ‘A’ in Physical Metallurgy, a general course for all engineering students.
“Many students usually don’t pass the course, but I did very well in it,” he said.
His thesis at UNILAG, entitled ‘Developmental and Optimisation of Dual Particle Reinforced Polymer Composites for Automobile Brake Pad Application’, is centred on the use of conventional materials to develop automobile brake pad.
“I hope the project would be developed for mass use,” he said.
However, Ajibade did not come by this achievement on a platter. He told Saturday Tribune that it was a product of sacrifice, hard work, commitment, diligence, and determination, coupled with God’s benevolence.
“So having had a third class at LASU, I said to myself that I would need to work very hard to enable me to move from that level to the highest obtainable grade in UNILAG,” he declared. “And God saw my commitment and crowned the effort with success.”
He explained that he had read about many people in and outside the country who had moved from zero level to become big legitimately in the society.
Troops kill 35 suspected bandits, arrest 18, rescue 40, recover arms in Zamfara
“So, I decided to brace up myself right from my master’s programme and I did well and qualified for PhD programme,” he said.
“But I must equally add that my supervisory team was made up of wonderful people. They are great tutors. They encouraged me a lot,” he added.
Even at that, and just like many other Nigerian students who faced lots of challenges, especially that of finance mostly because they are not from financially buoyant families, Ajibade is no exemption. His PhD programme was a full-time while his parents are retirees with no surplus money at hand.
“So, at times, there would be no money at hand to sustain myself and carry on with my project. But somehow, God would just come in and make a way out by using people, including my supervisors to support me,” he said.
But then, all was not about reading and studying. Ajibade also engaged in social life on and outside the campus. For him, it was a matter of effective planning to strike a balance.
“Sincerely speaking, I was focused and very determined to come out with an excellent grade,” he pointed out.
“But then, it wasn’t as if I was totally cut off from social life. I have many friends and I’m also into a relationship. I attended social functions and also church services on regular basis to worship God as a committed Christian. I also did watch movies and documentaries and all that.
“So, it was not that because of PhD I didn’t do any other thing. I did, but in a moderate way without one activity negatively affecting the other.”
Nevertheless, Ajibade has an advice for government and also for private sector. He said government would need to commit more resources to education and provide enabling environment for the private sector to do well.
“It is also necessary that private sector joins hands with the government to interface, especially as regards the PhD programmes, by way of providing financial supports to researchers on issues of public importance so that we all have Nigeria of our dream,” he said.
Now, Ajibade, who in-between his first and master’s degree programmes had a brief stint in the banking and automobile industries, is ready to take up teaching appointment, preferably with UNILAG.
“I love lecturing job so much and I know I will do very well in it. So, while I would be lecturing, I would continue with my education to a post-doctoral position,” he said.

Crime › Re: Will Ending SARS Stop The Killings? by HerCuteness(f): 1:40pm On Apr 02, 2019 |
PatrickOkunima: Obviously, No! If SARS is disbanded today, the members of the SARS team will continue with the killing in whatever role they find themselves in future.
Calling for an end to SARS is a good start, but that does not solve the problem. Nigerians should instead, call for a complete overhaul of all the security forces, including military and para-military.
This overhaul should include: re-orientating the men, retraining them, especially in respect to arms handling and meting out appropriate punishment for offenders.
A little explanation:
1. Reorientation - The security personnels should be made to understand what their primary responsibility is - to protect lives and properties. You'll be shocked to learn that most of them do not know. They should be taught that, no matter the circumstance, you do not draw your weapon, or point your rifle at someone you're supposed to protect.
One of the commandments given to us at the military training school, "Do not point your rifle at a friend (unarmed person)." We were told then that it was a dismissal offence to point our weapons at someone who is not armed and a threat to us, let alone pull the trigger.
I don't know the kind of message they pass to our security forces at the training school these days, but I think it should be looked into.
2. Training - Our men are not properly trained in handling rifles, especially the para-military (police, immigration, custom, NDLEA, Civil Defense, etc). Each of them you see wielding a rifle is a threat to your life. Hence, you have to be careful when dealing with them. I see lapses every day in respect of this. For instance, We're supposed to point our rifles at a certain angle and to ensure that there's no obstruction, before clearing it. A good number of these uniform guys don't know this. You see them discharge their weapons anyhow and for no reason. The government needs to do something about the training.
3. Punishment - I didn't witness this in the service, but was told that in those days, before a shooting exercise commences at the range, two graves are dug. One for the victim and one for the culprit, in the event that a soldier shoots another dead, deliberately or mistakenly. Same should be enforced. Any law enforcement agent who shoots and kills an innocent person, should face judgement, and if found guilty, executed by a firing squad, to serve as a deterrent to others.
4. Accountability - Those days in the military, you give account of your ammunition. If you're issued 20 rounds, you cannot return and handover 19 rounds to the armorer without explanation. In fact, you'll write a statement explaining how you used the ammo. A detailed investigation will be carried out to ascertain your claims.
It should be implemented fully, in all forces.
5. Mental Evaluation - Our security men should be mentally evaluated at the point of entry and periodically while in service. Anyone who fails the test should be discharged immediately. Most people will not agree with me on this, majority of these guys you see wearing uniforms are not normal. For some, their cognitive and reasoning abilities have been ruined by drugs. They're not different from armed lunatics.
Until these and other measures are implemented, the killings will not stop! Affirmative |

NaijaTechGuy: 2019 is the year of multiple cameras and many if not all smartphone brands have released phones with multiple cameras. You’ve probably seen the Nokia 9 Pureview with 5 cameras and the Huawei P30 Pro that comes with 4 cameras (40MP + 20MP +12MP +TOF Camera) and 50x optical zoom.

Nokia 9 Pureview
These two devices come with crazy specifications but I won’t go into that right now, maybe in another post. However, have you ever tried covering the main camera of your device with a dual camera? If you haven’t, try doing that right now.
You’ll notice you are actually blocking the whole camera. That leaves the question – What do the secondary cameras do and how do they work.
https://i1.wp.com/www.naijatechguy.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/tenor.gif
How Multiple Cameras Work
Now I want you to understand this. Most OEMs have other uses of their secondary camera other than the ones I’m going to mention below. These are just the basic functions of the secondary camera.
The secondary camera improves the overall clarity of the image with the help of a “Monochrome” feature. The secondary camera only records the black and white version of the image. With the help of the Monochrome sensor, the primary camera measures how much light is coming from the point of focus.
Previously (with the exception of the Google Pixel 3), the primary camera in smartphones normally handled the measurement so there was a very high possibility of losing some detail while measuring light intensity since it would still need to work on the color filtering.
So this extra burden is handled by the second camera which takes care of that area. Combining the monochrome image which has detailed information about the light and sharpness with the colored image that was captured by the primary camera will produce a rich and detailed image.
In some phones, the secondary camera acts as the zoom lens. Huawei uses their cameras on the P30 Pro a bit differently but going into the entire details might end up making this post a bit lengthy and a bit boring for people who aren’t hardcore techies so I’d try to keep this balanced. However, if you’d like to see that in another post do let me know in the comments.
So that’s basically how multiple cameras work on smartphones
